To her, the world seemed all the brighter when he was around. Her lonely world didn't feel so lonely when she was with him. While her garden was beautiful, and her papa was so good to her, she sometimes felt caged. Caged like a little bird, too fragile to see the world around her. Caged like a small flower, too delicate to live in the chaos that surrounded her. But he, he broke her out of her cage. He unlocked the door to the great wide somewhere she never had seen. What was once too dangerous became her safe haven when he was with her. Though her work had taken her out of her garden, she did not truly know what it was like before him. He became her love. He became her heart, though part of it was always set aside for her papa. Her days, once spent running about gardens and picking flowers were now spent waiting for him, dreaming about him. The flowers she once picked were thrown aside in favor of those he had given her. The gardens she once loved now felt empty without him. She waited patiently for him to arrive every night, to relish in those hours spent talking of everything and nothing. She learned his favorites and he learned hers. He told her of the wonderful things in the world, and she told him all the stories her papa had told her. She knew he would never leave her. But what would happen when she had to leave him? The day her papa said he would take her across the sea, what would happen to them? The same day he didn't come to see her, but only left her a note, sent by a messenger boy. She sat waiting, waiting to see if the world would take him from her, waiting for her papa to come back home. But they both came back. They both came back to her, though he was not truly back. She waited by his bedside, still to see if the world was as cruel as she had heard. But it was not. She would not have to live without him. She would not have to wait in the garden every day to see him by night. She would not have to separate her heart. And that day was both the most joyous and most terrible, for while she had gained a forever love, she had also lost one. But she was happy now, for Cosette would never have to be alone again.
