It seemed so simple at the time. Open up the portal to where this Angstrom Levy supposedly dumped all the Invincible variants and strong arm them into the GDA…or kill them all. They had an army of Reanimen at the ready, sonic emitters, all the weapons and tools they could muster.
Months of planning and strategy and preparation. However, none of it prepared Cecil for this.
"Donald, what am I looking at?"
"Well sir…it would appear we did find the dimension where all the Invincible variants went except…errr…"
He was looking at an unconscious female Invincible, one whose shallow breathing caused her prominent chest to rise up and down.
"They appear to be all female…sir."
"I can see that Donald. I just want to know why." Cecil stated, rubbing his nose in exasperation. "And why are they all so wounded? I know our guys didn't do all this."
"The tech team found most of them incredibly dehydrated and malnourished. They believed the Invincibles were starving and were on the brink of eating each other and had started to fight."
"Jesus."
"As for why they're female, the team thinks we breached a different, alternate timeline where—"
Cecil raised a hand, his migraine growing worse. "Never mind Donald…just…can we use them?" he sighed, rubbing his nose.
His assistant hesitated, pausing for a moment in thought as he pursed his lips. Finally, "…yes. The tech team had created kill switches to be implanted into them…shall I give the go ahead?"
Cecil simply nodded, content with the answers he's received…for now. "Get it done. I want them either contained or useful."
"Yes sir." Donald replied dutifully, moving to do just that before stopping, "And sir…does this change anything?"
"What?"
"They're all, well, female, sir…does that change anything?" he asked.
Cecil scoffed, "I don't see why it should. Whether they're male or female they'll do what they're told or else they die."
Donald simply nodded.
Cecil for his part just scowled, already wondering just how much pain this will be. "How hard can it be." he muttered under his breath.
"You're dead Cecil! Soon as I get out of this…whatever it is, I'm going to splatter you all over the ground!"
"You think this will keep me down for long? You're nothing but a wrinkly piece of shit Cecil! Just you wait!"
"This is insulting! I shouldn't be kept in such an arrangement! I am a Viltrumite! You hear me? You should be groveling at my feet, not looming over me acting like you've won!"
"Cecil? Why do you look like that now?"
Somehow it was that last question that threw him for the loop as one of the Invincibles asked him a question. She almost seemed genuinely curious.
"You're going to have to be more specific, kid." Cecil reflexively said, cursing himself inwardly. For a moment it was like he was talking to Mark.
He tiredly ignored the constant stream of threats and curses from the more vocal Invincibles as he looked at the hooded one. She seemed flustered but continued with narrowed eyes, "You're so…haggard. I don't remember seeing you like this."
Well that's what a shit show of a year would do to a man. The last few months had single-handedly aged him by at least a decade and if not for the GDA there's no doubt Cecil would've keeled over by now.
"A lot of shit's happened." he grunted. "And you all played a part in it."
Before they could speak, he cut in, "And while you may not be the Invincibles who wrecked my dimension personally there's no doubt in my mind you've done something similar."
He held up a controller, "So I'm going to be straight with you. We can do this the easy way or the hard way."
Now that he's gotten their attention, for a brief moment there was silence. Then the yellow and black clad Invincible glared at him. "What's the hard way old man?"
"Hard way is I lock you up deep underground in the most secure facility we have. You'll never see the sun again and you'll rot down there for the rest of your miserable life. I hear Viltrumites live for a long time." Cecil rasped, "The easy way is you work for me and you can have some degree of freedom. But you do as I say, when I say it, and you do not disobey. Ever. Got it?"
A beat of silence. Naturally the Invincibles were bristling at him and Cecil's frown only deepened. Here it comes.
"And why should we do what you say? What's stopping us from just getting out anyway?" one of them spat.
"Tech team's already looked you over. You're all malnourished, weak, and suffering from dehydration. It's a simple matter of keeping you weak and locking you up to wither away."
The GDA director continued, "Not to mention the failsafes we've implanted into your head. You step out of line…we'll put you down." he said coldly.
Most of the Invincibles at that point began to look away. Only the sinister looking one continued to glare angrily at him, though her trembling lip betrayed her apprehension. However he could also see the hungry, bloodthirsty gleam in her eyes.
"Y-You put bombs in our heads?" the hooded Invincible stated with audible surprise. "That…that's…"
"Smart." the Invincible that looked like Omni-Man chimed in. "You're trying to control us and make us useful…which means there's something coming that makes you nervous…let me guess…Viltrum right?"
Cecil simply folded his arms in silence.
"You won't be able to stand up against them." the Viltrum clad Invincible said in an almost bored, monotone voice. "The GDA couldn't in my dimension."
"We're not in your dimension now are we? We beat off multiple Invincible variants and Conquest. We'll handle the others when they come too." the director stated firmly.
Even if they took unacceptable losses from the Invincible War and the Advent of Conquest. The thought of that monster caused Cecil unimaginable dread.
His bold statement seemed to surprise many of the Invincibles as they shifted with uncertainty.
"…you defeated…Conquest?" Viltrum Invincible exclaimed in disbelief.
"That's right. We sent him packing and we'll do the same to the rest too. You can either join us, or stay out of our way. I'll let you decide." Cecil stated as he nodded and the GDA personnel began hauling them away.
He could only pray this works out. They had enough to deal on their plate as it is and they were still handling all the casualty reports coming in.
"What's the bad news Donald?" Cecil said as his faithful assistant walked up beside him.
"Well sir, of the 8 Invincible variants we captured most of them refused to help us outright. This may change in the future but as of right now they're rather antagonistic."
"And the good news?"
"Not all of them refused. So far we have recruited Marcy, Cici, and Marie."
Cecil paused.
"Who the hell are they?" he questioned, raising a brow quizzically.
"Well we couldn't call them all Marcella sir. They're these Invincibles." Donald handed him a clipboard of the ones the GDA recruited into their ranks.
The Omni Invincible, the Hooded Invincible, and…the Sinister Invincible? Cecil frowned even further upon seeing her profile, the girl sticking her tongue out as she sneered at the camera.
"Seriously?"
"She says she'll be a good g—ahem, asset to the GDA…so long as she feels like helping. I can get the tech team to create additional countermeasures if you feel the failsafe isn't enough." Donald offered.
"Go do that. She's a psycho and she knows it. The fact she's willing to taunt us about it means she's waiting for her chance so we won't give her one." Cecil growled, rubbing his brow in exasperation. This was shaping up to be a major headache.
"We'll need to give them different costumes…some GDA Spec Ops gear. Nothing fancy but something to hide their identities. We need them to remain away from the public eye. The scars from the last battles are still too fresh."
Donald nodded, "Understood sir. I'll get the tech team to accommodate them with some new gear." he cleared his throat, "Ideally…they'll be ready for the field in the same amount of time as Invincible except…"
"They're all murderers I know. I worked with worse before. We'll just need to know their limitations." he turned to Donald, his face grim, "And keep them as far away from the kid as possible…and people for that matter."
The cyborg paused for a moment before nodding again. "That would be ideal sir."
Just before they parted ways again, Donald turned to Cecil and spoke his mind. "Sir…are you sure about this? This can…this can blow up in our faces badly."
"It's like I told you before Donald. We can be the good guys or we can be the guys that save the world." Cecil replied, "Our best bet is the kid and he got beaten within an inch of his life. And that was against one. The Reanimen won't be ready for another few months and who knows how they'll fare."
Besides, it can't possibly be worse than all the things he's done to protect the world. This will be no different.
