The air in the Land of Dawn was thick with the scent of cherry blossoms, a delicate fragrance that always reminded Kagura of Hanabi. Hanabi, with her fiery hair and stoic demeanour, was anything but delicate, yet she held a certain quiet beauty that mirrored the fleeting nature of the blossoms. They were an unlikely pair, the elegant Onmyouji and the rebellious Scarlet Shadow, but their hearts beat in a rhythm only they understood.
Kagura skipped through the training grounds, her Seimei Umbrella twirling effortlessly above her. She spotted Hanabi, practising her Ninjutsu with brutal efficiency. Kunai flashed, leaving trails of crimson energy in their wake. Her brow was furrowed in concentration, her lips a tight line. Kagura watched, captivated, but a pang of something sharp and unfamiliar twisted in her chest.
She wasn't the only one watching. A young, eager-looking ninja, Hayabusa, hovered near the edge of the training grounds, his eyes fixed on Hanabi. He was offering her water, complimenting her skill. Hanabi, for her part, simply nodded curtly, taking the water with a muttered thanks.
That pang in Kagura's chest intensified. It was…jealousy. A green-eyed monster she rarely encountered. She clenched her fists, feeling a childish urge to yank Hayabusa away and shout, "She's mine!"
Instead, she cleared her throat, her voice a touch higher than usual. "Hanabi!" she called out, her Seimei Umbrella swirling as she approached. "I brought you some dango! Strawberry flavoured, your favourite."
Hanabi's head snapped up, a flicker of genuine warmth lighting her usually guarded eyes. "Kagura," she murmured, a hint of a smile playing on her lips. She accepted the dango, popping one into her mouth.
Hayabusa, noticing Kagura's arrival, bowed respectfully. "Lady Kagura, a pleasure. I was just admiring Hanabi's exceptional skill."
Kagura pasted on a sugary-sweet smile. "Oh, I'm sure you were. Hanabi is exceptionally skilled, isn't she?" She emphasized the 'is' a little too forcefully, then looped her arm possessively through Hanabi's. "But I'm afraid she's busy now. We were planning to take a walk by the river."
Hanabi, though seemingly oblivious, raised an eyebrow at Kagura's uncharacteristic display. "We were?"
"Of course, we were! Remember, Hanabi? Lovely afternoon, cherry blossoms in full bloom… romantic stroll?" Kagura squeezed Hanabi's arm, sending her a silent plea.
Hanabi, understanding dawning in her eyes, gave a barely perceptible nod. "Right. Romantic stroll." She gave Hayabusa a final, perfunctory nod. "Thank you for the water."
As they walked away, leaving Hayabusa looking slightly bewildered, Kagura couldn't help but giggle. "Sorry about that," she said, her face flushed. "I just… I didn't like him looking at you."
Hanabi stopped walking, turning to face Kagura. Her expression was unreadable for a moment, and then a soft smile touched her lips. "Jealous, Kagura?" she asked, her voice teasing.
Kagura blushed even harder. "Maybe a little," she admitted, burying her face in Hanabi's shoulder. "You're my Hanabi."
Hanabi wrapped her arms around Kagura, holding her close. "And you are my Kagura." She leaned back, her eyes searching Kagura's face. "You know I only have eyes for you, right?"
The sincerity in her voice melted away Kagura's jealousy, replacing it with a warm, fuzzy feeling. She nodded, her heart swelling with love. "I know," she whispered. "But sometimes…sometimes I just need to hear it."
They continued their walk down to the river, hand in hand. The cherry blossoms danced in the breeze, their petals raining down around them like pink confetti. Kagura picked one up, tucking it behind Hanabi's ear.
"You look beautiful," she said, her eyes shining.
Hanabi's cheeks flushed a faint pink. "You too," she mumbled, turning her gaze towards the river.
They sat in comfortable silence, watching the water flow by. Kagura leaned against Hanabi, feeling safe and content. She felt a sudden urge to do something silly to break the quiet. She giggled, then reached out and tickled Hanabi's side.
Hanabi jumped, surprised, and glared at Kagura. "Kagura!"
Kagura dissolved into laughter, unable to stop herself. She reached out and tickled Hanabi again, and this time, Hanabi couldn't help but laugh, too. Their laughter echoed through the air, mingling with the rustling of the leaves and the gentle murmur of the river.
They spent the rest of the afternoon wrapped in each other's arms, laughing, talking, and simply enjoying each other's company. The jealousy from earlier seemed like a distant memory, replaced by the warmth of their love and the simple joy of being together.
As the sun began to set, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, Kagura snuggled closer to Hanabi.
"I love you," she whispered, burying her face in Hanabi's neck.
Hanabi held her tighter. "I love you too, Kagura."
In that moment, surrounded by the beauty of the Land of Dawn and the warmth of their love, Kagura knew that she had found her happy place right there in Hanabi's arms. The jealousy might rear its head again from time to time, but she knew that their love was strong enough to overcome it. And as long as they had each other, everything would be alright.
