6:45 AM – Clarke-Fields Home, Tuesday Morning
The kitchen was alive with the hum of a busy family. Daniel flipped pancakes while trying to locate matching socks for Kaden, who was holding a pair of sunglasses and announcing his personal brand for picture day.
Kaden: "I'm going for 'cool boy who reads graphic novels and owns a dog with a side hustle.'"
Andrew (chuckling): "You don't own a dog."
Kaden (serious): "That's the side hustle part."
Daniel (to Andrew): "We should've limited his access to YouTube."
Andrew: "We tried. Remember? He changed the WiFi password and locked us out."
8:00 AM – Clifty Creek Elementary School Drop-Off Zone
Kaden leapt out of the car, hair perfectly gelled, wearing a blazer and sneakers.
Kaden: "If the photographer's name is Chad, I'm not smiling."
Daniel: "Good luck, buddy. No dabbing during the shot."
Kaden (grinning): "No promises."
8:30 AM – Columbus North High School, Staff Lounge
It was Picture Day at the high school too—and the squad had gathered early, armed with coffee, emergency combs, and no patience for Mona's usual chaos.
Madison (checking her reflection): "Do I look like a woman who assigns tough headlines but also inspires the next generation?"
Lucia: "You look like you own a bookshop that doubles as a crime-solving agency."
Maria: "Iconic."
Brendan (adjusting his pastel sweater vest): "I brought travel lint rollers if anyone needs one."
Daniel: "You're a saint."
Malik (dragging a travel mug): "If anyone asks, I'm going for 'potter who moonlights as a sleep-deprived model.'"
Mike (grinning): "You're nailing it."
Andrew (tying his tie, softly to Daniel): "Do you think our couple photo will be used to warn students what real love looks like?"
Daniel: "We'll haunt the yearbook in the best way."
9:10 AM – Photography Setup, School Auditorium
While staff lined up for individual shots, Mona Martinez, clad in a stark black pencil dress and eyeliner sharp enough to grade essays with, returned to her classroom for her students' pictures.
What followed… was a Mona Classic.
Mona (to her class): "Straighten your collars. No duck faces. If your parents cry when they see this photo, that's your fault."
A sweet, quiet student named Melody adjusted her bangs nervously.
Melody (softly): "Ms. Martinez, can I keep my glasses on? I don't like how I look without them—"
Mona (blunt): "You want to look like Harry Potter's long-lost cousin in the yearbook? Fine. Just don't come crying to me later."
Melody's eyes welled up, and she blinked rapidly to fight tears.
Just then—
Andrew and Daniel, passing the hallway after their photo, noticed Melody stepping out of the classroom sniffling.
Andrew (gentle): "Hey there. Everything alright?"
Melody (voice trembling): "Ms. Martinez said I looked ridiculous…"
Daniel (jaw tightening): "Yeah. No."
They quickly texted the squad.
9:20 AM – Chemistry Classroom Showdown
Mike, Malik, Madison, Maria, Tanisha, Lucia, Brendan, Andrew, and Daniel entered Mona's room like a support group with matching trauma.
Daniel (calmly): "Mona. We need to talk."
Mona (coldly): "If this is another intervention about my 'tone,' I have a class to prepare for."
Madison: "You made a student cry. On picture day."
Maria: "Melody's sweet. She wasn't doing anything."
Tanisha: "She just wanted to wear her glasses."
Mona (shrugging): "I gave her feedback. This isn't kindergarten."
Lucia: "It's not boot camp, either."
Mona (crossing her arms): "So you've all decided to gang up on me again? What is this, The Sorority Party Sequel?"
Malik (rubbing his temples): "Not this again."
Brendan (holding up both hands): "Let's de-escalate—"
Mona (snapping): "You know what? Maybe I will go to the principal. This is verbal assault."
Tanisha (deadpan): "Okay, Abby Lee Miller. Calm down. We're not filming Dance Moms: Chemistry Class Edition."
Mike (to Andrew): "Wait, is she going to file a police report like Abby did?"
Andrew (under his breath): "At this rate, yes—over someone touching her beaker."
Mona (furious): "You all never let the past go. That sorority party was years ago—"
Madison (cutting in): "We would've let it go... if you hadn't played Nickelback at a Taylor Swift-themed event."
Maria: "And if you hadn't dropped the buffalo dip on the ceiling."
Lucia: "Still don't know how it got up there."
Mona (gritting her teeth): "You four sabotaged me."
Tanisha (arms crossed): "We invited you. We made the playlist. You went rogue."
Mona: "I thought Nickelback was a bold choice!"
Madison: "It was a war crime, Mona."
Brendan (quietly): "I wasn't even there, and I feel like I have flashbacks."
The Room Falls Quiet.
Mona, suddenly tired, glanced around at all of them. For once, the fire in her eyes flickered.
Mona (softer): "I'm strict because if I'm not, they don't respect me. They don't listen."
Andrew (gentle): "Respect doesn't come from fear. It comes from connection. And Melody was scared, not supported."
Daniel: "You don't have to coddle. But you don't have to crush them either."
Brendan (nodding): "We're not here to attack you. We just want our students to feel safe."
Mona (after a beat): "...Fine. I'll talk to her. I won't apologize, but I'll talk."
Madison (muttering): "That's a start. Sort of."
10:00 AM – Guidance Office, Later That Morning
The squad regrouped, all emotionally fried, sipping coffee and sharing a box of donuts like they'd survived a reality TV finale.
Daniel: "Did we just do group therapy... for Mona?"
Andrew: "With flashbacks to buffalo dip and Nickelback? Yes."
Malik (munching): "Still confused about the dip on the ceiling."
Lucia (sipping tea): "I think she threw it upward in protest. It was... symbolic."
Maria: "Of what?"
Tanisha: "Desperation and poor music taste."
Brendan (smiling gently): "But at least now she knows we care. Even if she doesn't show it."
Madison: "If she plays Creed next staff meeting, we riot."
And in the yearbook that year?
Andrew and Daniel's couple portrait was captioned: "Power Couple Goals. Also made the buffalo dip joke 38 times this year."
Melody wore her glasses.
Mona actually smiled.
And the buffalo dip stain on the sorority house ceiling?
Still there.
A legend.
Like this squad.
Forever chaotic.
Forever loyal.
And forever unforgettable.
