Ninjago: Illusionary

Episode 8: Ultimatum

The storm arrived without warning.

One moment, the battlefield roared with the sounds of clashing metal and blinding elemental blasts. The next, the world fell into a dead hush, as shadows swept across the sky like ink spilled on parchment. The sun vanished behind roiling clouds the color of blood and charcoal, casting the Wailing Cliffs in a crimson twilight.

The wind howled.

From the Palace perched high above, a figure emerged — poised, regal, and radiating power. The Nightmare Queen stood at the edge of her balcony, overlooking the town and, by extension, the battlefield itself.

Then she jumped.

Her body ignited into a brilliant silhouette of deep red plumage, made purely of glowing energy. A peacock — majestic and terrifying — swept through the air in a silent dive. The feathers shimmered, shifting like living rubies as she spiraled downward toward the battlefield.

Kai took a step back. "You've got to be kidding me…"

Before she hit the ground, the peacock form collapsed into a thick, black cloud that swallowed the rocks below. The wind stilled.

Then, she reformed.

She stood at the center of the battlefield, unfazed. Untouchable.

Crimson eyes scanned the field. Her dress dragged behind her like trailing smoke, red gems pulsing faintly with an unnatural heartbeat.

"Enough," she said, her voice a velvet echo that rang across the cliffs.

The combatants froze. Even Neo General Cryptor lowered his blade. PIXAL instinctively moved beside Zane.

The Nightmare Queen raised one hand, and illusion twisted the air above the cliffs.

There, suspended in shimmering light, were the prisoners from the Never-Realm — battered, bound, and dazed. They stood along the cliff's edge as if sleepwalking, eyes clouded, steps trembling.

"If you value their lives..." Her voice carried quiet thunder. "You will listen."

Her eyes locked onto Zane's. Then PIXAL's.

"You will surrender the titanium one and his consort to me. Do so, and this war ends. No more bloodshed. No more illusions. The rest of you may walk free."

Her smile was cold. "Defy me… and they fall."

The cliffside prisoners suddenly leaned forward, toes over the edge. A breeze stirred the air.

"You can't do this!" Akita shouted, her voice cracking with rage.

"I don't think it's a good idea to challenge someone who has an entire realm hostage," Harumi whispered, pulling her back.

The Nightmare Queen's expression remained unchanged.

"I expect your answer in two days," she said, each word wrapped in icy certainty. "And know this — testing my tolerance for defiance is not a gamble you can afford. Any fraudulent play will be treated as open aggression… and thus, a rejection of my ultimatum."

"What do you want from my heart pieces?" Zane asked, his voice steady despite the tension.

The Nightmare Queen tilted her head ever so slightly, her smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "An ending to a tale long overdue," she replied cryptically, her eyes narrowing with deep, unsettling knowledge. "A freedom from a fate worse than death. An unjust conviction undone. You will understand soon enough."

She paused, letting the weight of her words settle. "But I will give you a chance to allow your fate to be decided."

Zane's gaze sharpened. "I'll come."

A cold wave swept through the ninjas and their allies. The weight of Zane's acceptance sank in, and the tension on the battlefield became unbearable. Panic began to seep through their ranks — would they lose Zane? Would he vanish into the Nightmare Queen's control forever?

Kai lunged forward. "Zane, no! You don't get to just give yourself up!"

But Zane didn't turn. His gaze remained locked with the Nightmare Queen's, a silent war of wills between frost and fire. His titanium frame was steady, but those closest could see the hesitation in his joints, the flicker in his photoreceptors. He wasn't afraid for himself, but for them. His fear was for his friends, for those he couldn't protect if he gave himself over.

PIXAL stepped beside him, placing a hand gently on his arm. "Then I'm coming with you," she said softly.

"No," Zane replied, almost too quickly. "You need to stay. If something happens—"

"I won't let you face this alone," she said, her voice steel beneath silk. "You know I won't."

The Nightmare Queen's eyes glittered with amusement. "Ah… devotion. How quaint. How predictable. But very well. Come, if you must. It won't change the outcome."

"Like heck it won't," Jay muttered under his breath, gripping his nunchucks tightly. "We're not going to just stand here and watch this happen!"

"Stand down," Sensei Wu's voice cut through the chaos like a blade. Calm, but heavy with command. "We have two days. We must use them wisely."

"But Sensei—!" Lloyd began, eyes wide with disbelief.

"She's made her terms. If we act now, recklessly, we risk all the prisoners. We risk Zane," Wu said. "We must think. Strategize."

Zane nodded slowly. "He's right. She's given us a choice, even if it's a cruel one."

Above them, the prisoners still swayed like marionettes in the air, bound by magic and held by the thinnest thread of will.

The Nightmare Queen gave a final glance toward the gathered heroes. "Two days," she repeated, and in a flare of ruby feathers and searing light, her body erupted into mist once more, vanishing into the clouds above like a bad dream.

Neo General Cryptor slowly straightened, dust and static crackling from his damaged plating. His once-rigid battle stance returned, confidence oozing from every calculated motion, as though the Nightmare Queen's appearance hadn't shaken him at all — though the dent across his chest told a different story.

He lifted his blade, then sheathed it with a sharp, deliberate clang.

"All forces," he commanded, voice amplified through his modulator, "withdraw. The Nightmare Queen has spoken."

Around the cliffs, his soldiers hesitated, glancing between their commander and the space where their queen had vanished like smoke. Then, one by one, they began to pull back, vanishing into the shadows like pieces on a chessboard being swept from the board.

Cryptor's eyes glinted with malicious humor as he turned back toward the ninja. "You heard her terms, tin-man," he sneered at Zane, voice oozing mockery. "Two days. Or she drops the dolls. Personally, I hope you stall. I'd love to see the Queen's patience snap."

He chuckled darkly and joined his army in their withdrawal.

Zane's fists clenched, his fingers scraping against the smooth surface of his wristplate.

Two days. That's what she said.

But Zane knew better than anyone — time was her weapon, not her weakness.

PIXAL looked at him, reading his expression instantly. "You're thinking of going to her… before the two days are up."

The tension in the air was thick, as if every breath carried the weight of Zane's decision. PIXAL stood beside him, her gaze steady, her hand still resting on his arm. She knew exactly what was running through his mind — the same grim resolve, the same determination to protect them all, even if it meant sacrificing himself.

"You're thinking of going to her… before the two days are up," PIXAL said softly, her voice low but sharp with understanding.

Zane didn't respond immediately, his mind already whirring with possibilities, strategies, and outcomes. His eyes were fixed on the horizon where the Nightmare Queen had disappeared, the ghost of her words still lingering in the air. An ending to a tale long overdue. What did she mean? What was she really after?

"I can't sit here and wait," Zane finally said, his voice a low murmur. "If she's really going to play us like this, if she has that kind of power over the prisoners… we can't just hope she'll hold off for two days."

PIXAL met his gaze with a quiet intensity. "We can't risk your life, Zane. Not for a gamble we don't fully understand."

Zane turned to her, his face impassive, but his expression spoke volumes. "I can't let them die. I won't risk their lives for the sake of pride or stubbornness. I need to draw her attention. I need to buy us time."

PIXAL's fingers tightened briefly on his arm before releasing it. She glanced back toward their friends, who were still standing in the distance, the gravity of their conversation still sinking in. "And what of the others? You don't think they'll try to stop you?"

"They will," Zane admitted, "but I have to make sure they understand. We need to buy more than just time. We need a chance to strike back, to get to the heart of the Nightmare Queen's power."

Just as the weight of their conversation settled in, Akita approached, her expression strained but determined. "Zane... PIXAL," she began, glancing nervously at the retreating army of General Cryptor, "I've got some intel you might want to hear. The dungeons beneath the palace might give us an in."

"Dungeons?" Zane repeated, raising an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

Akita leaned in closer, her voice hushed but urgent. "There's a network of tunnels running beneath the palace. They were once used to imprison enemies of the royal family. I know the layout, and the Paw can help us get inside undetected. It's a risky move, but it might give us an advantage."

PIXAL's brow furrowed. "You're suggesting we infiltrate the palace through the dungeons, bypassing her defenses?"

Akita nodded. "Exactly. The tunnels might lead us to an area closer to the Queen's control room, maybe even directly to her heart piece or whatever power she draws from. If we can disrupt that, it could weaken her enough to buy you the time you need."

Zane stood still, absorbing the information. "If we do this… we have to be careful. The last thing we want is to walk into a trap."

PIXAL stepped closer to Zane, her eyes scanning the battlefield, calculating. "We don't have many options, but if we split up, we might stand a chance. Zane, you and I will turn ourselves over to her as a diversion. If we can make her believe we're cooperating, we can keep her eyes on us. Meanwhile, the rest of you — Kai, Lloyd, Nya, Cole, Jay, Garmadon, Sensei Wu — you'll infiltrate the dungeons."

Kai clenched his fists, frustration written across his face. "I don't like this. Zane, you're not just a diversion. You're one of us. I'm not letting you go off alone with PIXAL like this."

Zane placed a hand on his shoulder, his expression softening. "It's the only way, Kai. Trust me. If we can get her to focus on us, the rest of you will have the best chance of getting in and out undetected."

PIXAL nodded in agreement. "And while we're distracting her, we'll be in communication with you with our suit's camera feed. If anything goes wrong, we'll be ready to react."

Jay's face scrunched up. "Wait, so you're telling me Zane and PIXAL are playing decoy while we're going off on some crazy rescue mission?"

"You're all crucial to this," Zane said firmly. "We just need to make sure we pull this off without tipping her off that we're coming for her."

Sensei Wu, ever the voice of reason, spoke up. "This is a dangerous plan, but it might be our only chance. We must remain disciplined. The success of this mission depends on timing and precision."

"That was obvious the moment we faced Mr. G." Garmadon remarks sarcastically.

Lloyd nodded, his expression hardening. "Two days. We'll use every second to plan."

With their strategy set, the group exchanged determined looks. This would be a fight unlike any they'd ever faced before. Time was slipping away, and the shadows of the Nightmare Queen's power were growing ever darker.

Zane turned toward the cliffs, where the glimmer of illusion still hovered around the prisoners, teetering dangerously over the edge. The weight of his choice pressed on him, but he knew what had to be done. They had to trust each other.

"Let's make sure this doesn't end in tragedy," Zane said quietly, his resolve clear.

As they split off into their respective roles, the battlefield fell silent again, the storm overhead still raging, the tension of the looming confrontation pulsing like a heartbeat.

It was a game of time and fate, and every move would matter.
