The Envelope — Kai X Hilary

Part 1: The Day Before Wedding

Hilary sat on the edge of her bed, fingers tightly clutching the soft fabric of her white bedsheet. Her chestnut hair cascaded over her shoulders, strands clinging to her damp skin. The room was quiet, save for the faint ticking of the clock on her wall. It was the day before her wedding, and yet, all she could think about was him. Kai.

Her ruby eyes stared blankly ahead, her mind a whirlwind of emotions. She could still feel the ghost of his touch, still hear his voice whispering her name. The breakup had shattered her, leaving behind shards too sharp to pick up. And now, she was on the verge of marrying Garland—a man she barely knew, a man her mother had chosen for her.

A flashback swept over her, pulling her into the memory of her conversation with her mother.

"Mom, I don't think I want to go through with this," Hilary had said, her voice fragile yet firm.

Her mother's face twisted into a scowl, ruby-painted lips thinning into a harsh line. "You need to stop this nonsense, Hilary. Everything is already finalized. The guests, the venue, the arrangements—everything!"

"But I don't love him," Hilary whispered, her hands trembling.

Her mother slammed a hand on the kitchen counter, making Hilary flinch. "Love? You think love pays the bills? Garland is wealthy, stable, and he wants you. Stop living in your delusions and face reality. You're marrying him tomorrow, whether you think it's a bad idea or not."

Hilary opened her mouth to speak, but her mother cut her off, voice slicing through the air. "Suck it up. You'll let go of your fantasies and learn to be a good wife. End of discussion."

A tear had slipped down Hilary's cheek, but she had nodded. What else could she do?

She didn't notice Emily and Mariah standing near the entrance, frozen, wide-eyed. They exchanged a glance before Emily cleared her throat, pretending not to have heard anything.

"Hey, Mrs. Tachibana! We just came by to spend some time with Hilary. I sadly won't be able to make it to the reception tomorrow because of a work emergency," Emily said, her tone casual.

Hilary's mother forced a smile, nodding stiffly before walking away.

The moment the door shut behind her, Emily and Mariah walked up to Hilary. An uncomfortable silence enveloped them as they ascended the stairs, heading to Hilary's room.

Hilary sat on her bed, her fingers fidgeting with the hem of her dress. Emily and Mariah sat on either side of her, the weight of unspoken words hanging heavily between them.

"Why aren't you saying anything?" Hilary finally asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Mariah sighed and reached into her bag, pulling out an envelope. She handed it to Hilary, her amber eyes soft but cautious.

Hilary blinked, her brows knitting together as she stared at the envelope. "What is this?"

Emily spoke up, her tone gentle yet firm. "It's from Kai."

Hilary's entire body went rigid. She stared at the envelope as if it might burn her. Her heart pounded painfully in her chest, and a whirlwind of emotions twisted in her stomach.

Emily reached over and wrapped her arm around Hilary's shoulder. "Look, we know this is hard. But maybe… maybe read it once before you decide to go through with the wedding. If you don't want to get married, Mariah and I are here for you. We'll help you, no matter what."

Hilary swallowed, her throat tight. Her lips parted, but no words came out. Instead, she offered a weak nod. Emily and Mariah shared a look, giving her a reassuring smile before quietly slipping out of the room.

Left alone, Hilary's fingers brushed over the edges of the envelope. Her name was written in Kai's familiar handwriting, each curve and line a painful reminder of what they had lost.

Her chest heaved as she wrestled with the decision. Finally, a surge of frustration took over. She crumpled the envelope in her hand and tossed it into the trash can near her vanity. The sound of paper hitting metal echoed in the quiet room.

Her heart felt like it was being squeezed, but she shut her eyes and forced herself to breathe. She couldn't do this. Not now.

Hilary lay back on her bed, the ceiling blurring as tears welled in her eyes. She turned to her side, curling into herself as the weight of everything pressed down on her.

And as the hours dragged on, Hilary remained in the same spot, unmoving, lost in a sea of despair.
