This is the second story in my Kelly and Yorkie trilogy. Although, I had this idea first. I was motivated by a few things. First off, a number of Black Mirror episodes have endings that feel, emotionally unsatisfying (e.g. White Christmas, White Bear) and I wanted to further elaborate on them. Secondly, I felt that (like many viewers), eventually Kelly and Yorkie would grow bored of their digital paradise, and want a bigger adventure, that I could provide. It would need a villain, which is where Robert Daly came in. I thought Nish from Black Museum could be an effective foil for him, given she's young and extremely tech savvy. So much so, that I wrote her as the only character that could split her consciousness and attention between the real and virtual worlds.
Finally, I wanted to put my own, somewhat more positive spin on the show's social commentary. Including the idea of AIs as an oppressed group. I really hope you enjoy it. It will not be my last Black Mirror story.
Note: this story ignores season 7, and in particular, the episode USS Callister - Into Infinity
… doesn't matter what I do now, doesn't matter what I say...
San Junipero, 1990
Kelly and Yorkie were dancing to the song Summer Rain, by Belinda Carlisle. It had been several years since they had "passed over", although they had both lost track of how long it had been (what does time even mean in a place like this?). Part way through their time together, they decided to move from the year 1987 to 1990, the way one might move house. This was mainly to ward off boredom, but it could only last for so long. Which is why when the song ended, Kelly lead Yorkie to the alleyway behind Tuckers, where they had chatted the night they met. Yorkie knew something was wrong, and was pretty nervous.
"What is it, Kel?" she asked
"I'm sick of it, Yorkie. I'm sick of all of it. Tuckers, the beach, dancing to pop hits, each of the arcade machines that we've played hundred times. Belinda fucking Carlisle!"
"Are you also sick of me?" Yorkie asked, honestly a little scared
"No, and as long as we both exist, I will never grow tired of you." Kelly said, passionately, while gently stroking her face (Yorkie made a mental note of what Kelly had just said) "But we can't stay here, Yorkie. Its boring" Kelly explained
"We'll, we haven't tried the seventies yet. Or maybe the 21st century? But I've heard it can be kind of terrifying" Yorkie suggested, feeling relieved
"It can be. But, actually, that's not quite what I had in mind" Kelly said, pointing upwards.
"What?" Yorkie asked, confused "The roof of Tuckers? Because I recall there was some trouble the last time we…"
"No, higher" Kelly clarified, now raising her arm above her head
"The sky?, the clouds?, the stars?, wait, the stars?!" Kelly nodded
"Is this about my glasses, because I was never really into Sci-Fi that much" Yorkie explained (which was half true. She never really got into space operas, preferring more "grounded" sci-fi, set in the present, such as Weird Science, Short Circuit and The Terminator)
"No, but Allison was" Kelly explained
"Your Daughter?" Yorkie asked
"Yeah, she dragged me along to this convention, when she was a kid, a few times for Space Flight, or something" Kelly said
"Space Fleet" Yorkie clarified
"I thought you weren't into it?" Kelly probed
"I'm not. But I've heard of it. What did you have in mind, exactly?" Yorkie asked, pivoting
"Well, I met someone a little while ago, who was talking about other systems we can transfer to. He said he could hook us up. One was a sci-fi MMORPG" Kelly explained
"A what?" Yorkie had never heard this acronym before
"I don't know, exactly. I was never that tech savvy. Its like a video game, that people play online. You start off in a spaceship, and you travel from planet to planet, and work with other players to do missions. It sounded pretty exciting. What do you think?" Kelly asked, tentatively
"Great, let's do it" Yorkie said, without hesitation. Although she had doubts, she was certain that as long as she and Kelly were together, it would all work out.
Kelly and Yorkie's Beach House
"Hey, nerd" Wes said, condescendingly "So, ladies, what are we doing here?"
"I just asked that" Davis complained, adding "And I have a name"
"Guys, if you could just settle down..." Kelly said "We brought you here to say goodbye"
"Wait, don't tell me you're…" Davis asked, and did a gesture implying death
"No, its not like that" Yorkie insisted "We're just transferring to another system"
"And we wanted to give you a parting gift" Kelly said "This house"
"Wow, that's…" Davis began
"Well, its not like we'll be needing it anymore" Yorkie said
"Be sure to take care of each other" Wes said, in a somewhat lecturing tone, hiding his feelings. Then he and Kelly shook hands.
Davis shed a single tear, and hugged Yorkie "I'm gonna miss you guys" he said
Wes made a snide remark about this display of emotion, and Davis was about to respond angrily, when Kelly intervened.
"Guys!" she said "Learn how to get along and live together, Its not too late to change our minds about the house"
"You're right" Wes admitted "I'll be good, And yeah, I'll miss you guys too" and then he hugged the two of them. Davis also hugged Kelly. Then the two men took a step back and the two ladies shimmered out of existence.
Almost immediately, the two men began bickering about how they would reorganise and redecorate the house.
...somewhere in my heart I'm always, dancing with you in the Summer Rain...
