EXTRA! Fairy Vearth! (Usopp's POV) 2/2
"I hate the sky."
Usopp's scream echoed through the jungle canopy as he bolted past a flock of screeching, overly-aggressive sky birds—each one nearly twice his size and three times as angry.
Branches snapped, vines slapped across his face, and still, he ran. Behind him, the swoosh-thump-thump of something four-legged—and very hungry—kept pace with disturbing ease.
"Why does everything up here want to eat me?!" he cried, leaping over a root only to slam into the side of a mossy tree.
Dazed, he rolled to the side just in time to avoid a bird claw the size of a frying pan.
This was Fairy Vearth, the legendary Sky Island, and it was nothing like the fairy tale paradise he imagined. No golden clouds or endless sky candy—just terrifying wildlife, treacherous terrain, and a growing list of life-threatening encounters.
Still clutching his musket, Usopp scrambled to his feet.
"Okay, Usopp… You have powers now! You've eaten a Devil Fruit! You can turn things into bullets! This is fine. You're fine."
He spun and slapped his hand against a chunk of bark from the tree. In a flash, it morphed into a hardened, leaf-twined bullet.
"Time to show these jungle freaks who's boss!"
He aimed, fired—POW!—and nailed the nearest bird square in the beak. The creature flopped midair, spiraled down, and crashed into the brush.
The others scattered.
"Ha! That's right! Fear me!"
But before his ego could catch up to reality, a low growl behind him sent a chill down his spine.
He turned slowly.
"Oh come on, what now—"
A six-legged beast made of cloud-stuff and muscle stood between him and the next clearing.
"…I really hate the sky."
After barely escaping the beast, Usopp huffed through the foliage, clutching his musket like it was a lifeline.
"Okay, that's the third time I've almost died today. I should be earning hazard pay." Usopp sighed his eyes scanning the foliage.
No sign of the Merry. No sign of Luffy. No sign of anything friendly.
What he did find, unfortunately, were Sky Warriors. Not the priests—at least not yet—but close enough. Armed with weird cloud-tech and aggressive hairdos, they emerged from the mist with cruel grins and staff-like weapons charged with dial energy.
"The intruder. Capture him for the trial."
"W-Wait, trial? No thanks! I've had enough of sky justice for one lifetime!" Usopp said firing off a rock-bullet, smashing it into one of their dials, then ducked behind a cloud-bush. He slapped the nearest object—a discarded vine net—and it turned into a barrage of sharp, spiked net bullets, which tangled up a few of the guards mid-leap.
"Boom! How's that for creative firepower?"
It wasn't exactly a win… but he was definitely causing trouble, and in Sky Island, that counted for something.
Later, as Usopp regrouped deeper in the forest, the air changed.
Static crackled on his skin. The clouds above turned black, and the oppressive weight of divine judgment settled over him.
"This has to be this 'god' figure…"
Sure enough, a blinding flash and a resounding BOOOOOM came from the direction of the Upper Yard's sacred ruins.
Even from this distance, Usopp could feel it—raw power. And something else…
Smoke.
And Chopper's voice screaming.
"No, no, no—Chopper?!"
He sprinted. Fast as he could. Leapt over roots, kicked past cloud-bugs, until he reached a cliff's edge that overlooked the shattered battlefield below.
There lay Chopper—unconscious, smoking, barely breathing.
And hovering above him… was the figure called god...
"You think you can interfere with divine judgment?" the thunder god scoffed, turning his gaze toward a crumpled, half-burned jacket off to the side.
Ben's jacket.
Usopp's heart twisted. His brain screamed at him to run. But he couldn't.
He aimed his musket. Every logical part of him knew this was stupid. That Enel was invincible. That his bullets would do nothing.
"Get away from them!" Ussop shouted out his heart thundering in his chest.
He fired—more out of instinct than hope. The bullet passed through Enel harmlessly, evaporating in the heat.
The god didn't even blink.
"Fool."
Lightning surged.
The next thing Usopp remembered was pain—and the feeling of being thrown backwards like a ragdoll. The trees caught him. Barely.
Dazed and half-blinded by the blast, he watched through blurred vision as Luffy emerged, fists clenched and eyes burning.
"WHERE IS HE!" was the last thing Usopp heard from Luffy before he passed out...
When Usopp next opened his eyes, the sky was bluer than he'd ever seen it—clear, calm, not a single trace of stormclouds.
He blinked. Once. Twice. His back ached. His arms ached. His everything ached. "Am I… dead?"
"About time you woke up."
Usopp turned his head weakly and saw Zoro, arms crossed, standing nearby with a bored expression. He was leaning casually against the Merry's railing.
Wait—the Merry?
Usopp sat up with a jolt—immediately regretting it as pain flared across his spine.
Sure enough, they were sailing—riding the sea of clouds once more. The Upper Yard now a fading speck behind them.
And there, perched in his favorite spot at the Merry's prow like nothing ever happened, was Luffy, grinning like a kid on a playground.
"Yo, Usopp! You missed it! Nami's a lightning lady now!"
"…what?!" Usopp asked, He turned—and his jaw dropped.
There stood Nami, arms crossed, sparks of blue-white lightning crackling along her skin like it was nothing. Her hair swayed gently with the static, and her expression was one part pride, two parts menace.
"That god's power," Robin said smoothly beside her. "Transferred when he was defeated. Nami was the one to claim it."
Usopp's mouth hung open. "Our navigator is a walking thunderstorm."
"Cool, right?" Luffy beamed. "She can zap stuff now!"
"We're all gonna die." Usopp screamed out...
But before he could process more, he heard a distressed squeak and turned to see Chopper by the steps, hunched over Ben's jacket—now burnt and torn along the shoulder. The little reindeer-doctor was working tirelessly, patching it with careful little stitches.
Robin knelt beside him, gently guiding the needle. "We figured it was important. He doesn't talk about it, but..."
"I understand.. we'll tell you soon just let us return to the seas below.." Usopp added finishing Robin's thought, then gave a small smile.
Usopp leaned back slowly, groaning as his bones settled in.
But somehow, despite the madness, the danger, the pain, and the literal gods they'd fought… it felt worth it.
He raised his hand, slapping it down on the deck. Near a scrap of wood.
A small bullet appeared in his palm.
"Alright, Bullet Bullet Fruit… you and me, we've got a long way to go."
The Going Merry sailed on, the sky around them serene and endless.
