Much like its relative of Litwick, with whom it shares a flame, Greavard are known for spending time around living and recently deceased children. Yet unlike Litwick, who are content to wait by hospital windows, Greavard are remarkably energetic pokemon. Although a fairly common species by the standards of ghost types, Greavard were among the last pokemon in Paldea to be photographed, for it is very rare to witness one standing still.

Children in Paldea are warned not to play with strange dogs, but it is not always easy to deny a Greavard, with its fluffy shape and wagging tail, a request to play tug of war or fetch, or to chase after it when it runs. One game becomes another, and the child loses track of time, while more children, Greavard, and other ghost pokemon join in. Eventually, the child realizes their playmates were ghosts, and their playground a graveyard; the obstacles they were weaving between were nothing more than tombstones. If the child realizes this fact quickly enough, they may escape with nothing more than a story to tell; if they continue until they collapse from exhaustion, however, they shall become an eternal participant in the Greavard games.

Greavard are not aware that they drain the lives of their playmates, and would be horrified to learn it if they ever found out. Ghost pokemon are sometimes known to disappear in the process of cursing another, but Greavard have no target and no one else to blame. Some have attributed the habit of forlorn Greavard watching over particular gravestones to guilt once learning this truth, but this could be just as easily explained as a favor for a friend's spirit – after all, these Greavard are still easily distracted by thrown objects, and happy to play fetch with all comers!
