"Percy, let me go," she croaked. "You can't pull me up."
His face was white with effort. She could see in his eyes that he knew it was hopeless.
"Never," he said. He looked up at Nico, fifteen feet above. "The other side, Nico! I'll meet you there. Understand?" Annabeth frowned. There was something wrong with what he just said, but her head was so foggy with pain that she couldn't figure out what.
Nico's eyes widened. "But–"
"Lead them there!" Percy shouted. "Promise me!"
"I–I will."
Below them, the voice laughed in the darkness. Sacrifices. Beautiful sacrifices to wake the goddess.
Percy tightened his grip on Annabeth's wrist. His face was gaunt, scraped and bloody, his hair dusted with cobwebs, but when he locked eyes with her, she thought he had never looked more handsome.
"I can't lose you, Wise Girl," he said. "Never again." Annabeth gasped, finally understanding. A one way trip. A very hard fall.
"Percy, no–" Annabeth tried to say, but Percy had other plans.
With a massive effort, he heaved Annabeth upward toward him, her leg feeling like it was going to separate from her body. The pain was so bad it was clouding her vision, but somehow, Percy found a way to sever the strand of spider silk pulling her down.
"Nico!" he shouted. The whole world lurched as Percy heaved her upward, impossibly managing to get her on top of the ledge. "Keep her safe! I'll be back soon."
"Percy!" Annabeth shouted, her heart in her throat. He was still hanging from the ledge, still with one hand, but now there was a strand of spider silk tangled in his legs. Annabeth understood now. Percy had used his legs to transfer the spider silk from her to him.
"I love you," Percy said, pausing. "Annabeth." Then his hand slipped from the ledge and he fell, vanishing into the darkness below.
"No! No!" Annabeth screamed. "Percy! NO! You Seaweed Brain," she sobbed, standing on the tiny ledge over the endless Pit. "No… come back" she whispered, nearly crumpling.
