Chapter One: The Herald's Premonition
January 12th, 2016, felt like any other chilly Tuesday in Hangzhou as Li Cu navigated the crowded university campus. The initial excitement of his first semester had mellowed into a routine of lectures, late-night study sessions fueled by lukewarm instant noodles, and the comforting presence of Second Room a short bus ride away. He was tentatively building a new life, one brick at a time, trying to bury the ghosts of Gutongjing and the bitter taste of his father's words.
Today, however, a peculiar detour broke his usual path. Drawn by a dusty sign proclaiming "Antiques & Curios," Li Cu found himself browsing a small, cluttered shop tucked away in a side street near the campus. The air inside was thick with the scent of aged paper and forgotten things. An old man with kind eyes and a wispy white beard sat behind the counter, seemingly more interested in a well-worn book than potential customers.
Li Cu idly flipped through a box of old postcards when his fingers brushed against something stiff and glossy. He pulled it out – a trading card unlike any he'd seen before. The artwork depicted a majestic, winged being wreathed in golden light, holding a staff that pulsed with celestial energy. The cardstock felt thick and expensive, and the name printed at the top was elegant and unfamiliar: "Herald of Creation."
The old man looked up, a faint smile gracing his lips. "Ah, you found that one. A rare piece indeed. Take it, young man. A gift."
Li Cu blinked, surprised. "Really? I couldn't…"
"Nonsense," the old man chuckled, waving a dismissive hand. "It's been sitting here for ages. Perhaps it was waiting for you."
Clutching the unusual card, a strange sense of… something… settled over Li Cu. He thanked the old man, a curious warmth emanating from the card in his hand, before heading back towards the bus stop.
Later that evening, back in the familiar, comforting clutter of Second Room's apartment, Li Cu lay on his bed, the "Herald of Creation" card resting on his chest. He'd shown it to Second Room, who had shrugged, admitting he knew nothing about trading cards. As the city lights flickered through the window, casting long shadows on the walls, a strange drowsiness washed over Li Cu.
He wasn't sure if he was dreaming, but the image of the Herald on the card seemed to shimmer and coalesce in the dim light of the room. The golden light intensified, and a figure began to materialize above him, translucent yet undeniably present. It was the Herald itself, its serene face filled with an ancient wisdom.
Li Cu tried to speak, but his voice caught in his throat. The Herald's voice, when it finally echoed in his mind, was gentle yet resonant.
"You carry a thread of destiny, young one. A path intertwined with the echoes of the past and the whispers of futures yet to unfold."
A second, equally luminous figure appeared beside the Herald – a being with swirling, crystalline wings and eyes that seemed to hold the vastness of time.
"I am the Crystal Seer," this second spirit intoned, its voice like the chime of distant bells. "I have foreseen a convergence, a nexus point four years hence. An event that will irrevocably alter the tapestry of your fate."
The Herald nodded solemnly. "Guard this knowledge, child. The threads are being woven. The ancient powers stir once more, and the boundaries between worlds grow thin."
Then, as suddenly as they had appeared, the luminous figures began to fade, the golden light receding until only the "Herald of Creation" card lay on Li Cu's chest, its surface now cool to the touch. Li Cu lay there, heart pounding, the ethereal pronouncements echoing in his mind. Four years. An event that would change his fate. What could it possibly mean?
