"How did we get pulled into this again?" Aomine grumbled, eyes narrowing with displeasure. A scowl worked its way across his features.
Kise brightly said, "Come on, Aomine-cchi. We are doing this to help Momoi-cchi."
Momoi had asked if the Generation of Miracles would do her a favor by taste testing her food. She'd been working hard to improve her cooking skills over the last few weeks, but it had been difficult to find people willing to be guinea pigs.
"Tch," the tanned male scoffed. "I still don't see why we had to get involved."
"Because Momoi is our manager and our friend," Kuroko said.
"You do know her cooking is crap, right? We're basically asking to get food poisoning."
Midorima pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose with his taped fingers. "Since you already agreed, there is no point in complaining now."
"He's right, Mine-chin," Murasakibara lazily chimed in. "You can have my portion." When faced with Momoi's cooking, he'd be more than willing to share.
An annoyed tick mark appeared, and Aomine shouted at the two, "Shut up! And Murasakibara, eat your own food! You should know how to do that since that's all you do, all day, every day."
"Calm down, calm down," Kise interrupted, chucking nervously.
"Enough," Akashi cut in, his voice slicing through the room like a hot knife through butter. The other basketball players fell silent, their eyes connecting with the redheaded captain. "Shintaro is correct. We all have agreed to assist Satsuki. There is no use complaining now."
Midorima narrowed his eyes suspiciously. "What do you know that the rest of us don't, Akashi?" he questioned. He'd been suspicious since the moment he'd learned Akashi had agreed to taste test the pink-haired manager's cooking. If nothing else, Midorima knew Akashi had a high sense of self-preservation.
Akashi let a small smirk curve his lips. "Like the rest of you, I am aware that Kagome has been giving Satsuki cooking lessons. But none of you know that Kagome is here today, do you? She's currently supervising in the kitchen."
In response, Midorima's eyes widened.
Aomine loudly exclaimed, "What?"
"Kagome-cchi is here?" Kise asked, eyes beginning to sparkle with excitement. "I need to find a mirror! I need to make sure I look good for Kagome-cchi."
Kuroko blinked blankly. "Kagome is here…?"
Murasakibara yawned. "Oh, good. If Gome-chin is here, I'm sure the food will be tasty. Hey, Mine-chin, I take back what I said earlier. Don't touch my food or I'll crush you."
"Shut up, Murasakibara!"
It wasn't a secret that each member of the Generation of Miracles had a soft spot for Kagome Higurashi. She had transferred to their middle school late, but she had quickly caught their attention. Not only was she beautiful, but she was also extremely kind and smart. Her fiery temper and fearless personality had made her more than capable of standing up to them without flinching. No one – not even the teachers and the staff – tried to stand against them, letting them get away with too many things. But she didn't. She had a way of controlling them and their different personalities.
Aomine glared. "Hey, Akashi. How did you know that Kagome would be here?"
"I simply talked her into it."
Midorima scoffed, "Nothing is that simple with Higurashi."
"You shouldn't talk that way about Kagome," Kuroko lightly scolded.
"Hey," Murasakibara cut in. "Do you think Gome-chin is making sweets for me?"
"Why would she be making sweets just for you?" Kise replied, pouting. "Besides, if she were making sweets, they'd obviously be for me!"
"You're so annoying. I should crush you…"
Momoi's happy voice interrupted their conversation. "Thanks for waiting, guys! The food's ready," she said. In her hands, she carried a plate covered with a white cloth. Behind the pink-haired manager, Kagome walked in with a similar plate in her hands.
The girls set their offerings on the table in front of the basketball players. Kagome finally spoke, the smile on her face a little sheepish.
"Since this is the first official dish Momoi made, I had her do something easy." She removed the white cloths, revealing what the other girl had made. "It's onigiri. Please try some."
No one reached for the rice balls, their eyes blinking down at the food.
Momoi nervously shifted, her fingers twisting the bottom of her school uniform shirt. "What?" she asked. "What's wrong? Why aren't you eating?"
Kise chuckled, though the sound was strained. "N-Nothing's wrong, per se…"
Aomine was blunt, not holding back his judgement. "Why the hell are they all misshapen and different sizes?"
Momoi puffed her cheeks out, becoming defensive. "Just because they look funny and are different sizes doesn't mean they taste bad, Dai-chan," she scolded.
"Ehh~" Murasakibara drew out, eying the onigiri. "Did Gome-chin make any of these?"
"Ah, no," Kagome answered. "Momoi made all of them."
"And you were supervising her, correct?" Midorima asked.
"Yes, I did."
Aomine narrowed his eyes on the raven-haired beauty. "You were supervising her the whole time?"
What were they trying to say? Kagome felt her brow tick, beginning to feel annoyed. "Yes…"
Kise experimentally poked one rice ball. "Aside from its appearance, at least they appear normal," he said.
Kuroko nodded. "And they're not burned."
Akashi added, "They don't have a weird smell either."
Momoi huffed, hands propping onto her hips. "Will you guys just try them already?" She knew she wasn't the best cook, but she felt confident about the onigiri, especially after learning from Kagome for the last few weeks.
What could possibly go wrong?
The Generation of Miracles grabbed a rice ball. As one, they took a bite.
Then promptly spit it out.
"What?" Momoi exclaimed, surprised. From her side, Kagome also appeared just as surprised.
"What the hell?" Aomine spat, tongue sticking out, and eyes beginning to water. "Why is it so damn salty?"
Kise was using a napkin to wipe his tongue. "I think my taste buds were destroyed…"
Kuroko silently sat in his seat, though his eyes were blank and devoid of life. If one were to look closely, they could see his spirit desperately hanging onto his physical body.
Midorima's expression was hidden by his bangs and glasses, but his mouth was screwed up in distaste. Lips trembling, he muttered, "Nothing in my horoscope said anything about this happening to me today… I don't think even my lucky item will save me from death's door."
"That was gross." Murasakibara narrowed his eyes onto Momoi. "I am never trusting Sat-chin with food ever again."
Akashi had been the only one to politely spit his bite into a napkin, though his facial features were paler than before. As stoically as he could, he commented, "I also did not realize rice could have a soggy but crunchy texture…"
In despair, Momoi wailed, "How could this have happened? I followed Kagome's instructions exactly!"
"You damn sure did not," Aomine exclaimed back in response. He turned accusatory eyes onto Kagome. "Kagome, you said you were watching every second. What the hell happened?"
"I-I'm not sure…" The raven-haired beauty cautiously reached for a rice ball. Her wrist was captured before she could make contact, and her gaze was caught by the redheaded captain. "Akashi…?"
"There's no point in tasting it. You would only experience what we did."
"But…"
He shook his head. Without releasing Kagome, he turned his attention onto a distraught Momoi. "Satsuki, why don't you go prepare another batch? Kagome will be in shortly – and you will show her everything you did."
Meekly, the pink-haired manager nodded and left to return to the kitchen. As soon as she was out of sight, the other basketball players protested.
"No way, Akashi," Aomine hotly declined, shaking his head. "There's no way I'm sitting through another round of this torture. I would like to be alive to see tomorrow."
Kise nodded. "I agree with Aomine-cchi." His eyes turned to look at Kuroko. "I don't think Kuroko-cchi is breathing…"
Midorima fixed his glasses. "If you wish to stay, Akashi, that's on you. Don't drag the rest of us into this mess."
"Aka-chin, I'm going home," Murasakibara said with finality.
Akashi smirked, the gesture causing the other males to tense. Kagome shifted on her feet, unsure what would happen next. With the redheaded captain, one just never knew what he was plotting.
"One of you wake Tetsuya up. I know of a way for all of us to get through this."
"Oh yeah?" Aomine scoffed. "How's that going to happen?"
In response, Akashi gently but firmly tugged Kagome forward. All eyes landed on her, and she nervously gulped. Why did it suddenly feel like she'd just been thrown into a den of predators?
"Kagome here will give us some… incentive."
Mentally, she had to wonder if this had been Akashi's true intention from the moment he'd talked her into supervising Momoi's cooking exploit.
Thank you to everyone who reviewed, followed, and added these prompts to their favorites list! :)
I personally enjoyed writing this chapter because I love torturing those boys ;D but hey, I'm sure they'd be fine with it if Kagome compensates them.
I'm thinking about doing a possible one-shot/short story (approx. 2-3 chapters) with Kagome/Suguru Geto (Jujutsu Kaisen) as the main pairing. Thoughts? Let me know in the review section!
