What am I doing here? Gilthunder couldn't help contemplating. He was seated at a table in a popular café, hot coffee in front of him, as he waited for his blind date to arrive. His bright blue eyes stared at the steaming cup of dark-colored liquid, wondering when and where his life had gone so wrong.
He'd only had one relationship his entire life. Margaret had been stunningly beautiful, both inside and out. Her spirit had been kind and gentle. She had never talked badly about anyone, always levelheaded and calm. She'd been like that since childhood, he remembered, having watched her grow from a clumsy child to a graceful young woman.
They'd dated since high school and all the way through college. Gilthunder had thought their future had been set in stone. He had even bought a ring, planning to propose to Margaret in a subtle but romantic fashion, knowing that she wouldn't like anything flashy.
But all his plans had crashed and burned.
Margaret had broken up with him, citing that their lives were starting to drift apart. They were different people from when they'd been high school sweethearts. She wanted to focus on her artistic endeavors, expressing her wish to travel overseas, to paint, to sculpt, to try everything. And Gilthunder was making his way through the ranks at the security company he worked for. Traveling wouldn't help further his career, but losing the love of his life wouldn't have been worth it.
In the end, it hadn't mattered. Margaret hadn't wanted to compromise, hadn't wanted to live with the guilt of holding him back from his dream. He'd offered to wait for her. She declined. Gilthunder had nodded, then let her go.
It had been nearly two years since the last time he'd seen and heard from her. His boss, Meliodas, was dating Margaret's younger sister Elizabeth, so he knew that Margaret was currently living in New York. Gilthunder wished her well and was happy that she seemed content with her life.
Sometimes, deep down, he wished he was still part of that life. But another part – a part that gave him courage and strength – finally understood her words from back then and agreed. They had been growing into different people, outgrowing each other. It was time to move on.
But still, he mentally sighed. What had Howzer been thinking? While Gilthunder appreciated what his coworker and best friend was trying to do, he wished that Howzer had come up with a different plan. He didn't even know who he was meeting, let alone what she looked like. All he'd been given was a name – Kagome. No last name.
Gilthunder picked up his coffee, sipping the hot beverage. He was tempted to call the blonde and scold him for his current situation, but he refrained. Howzer wouldn't introduce anyone to Gilthunder with malicious intent. The guy could be dense, but his heart was always in the right place.
And honestly, he was a little curious about the mysterious young woman Howzer was trying to set him up with.
"Excuse me," a sweet, gentle voice questioned. "By any chance, do you happen to know a man named Howzer?"
When he looked at the one who spoke, Gilthunder didn't expect the way his heart skipped a beat at the sight of the raven-haired beauty standing in front of him. He was immediately captivated by her amethyst orbs, and he suddenly felt tongue-tied. Was this the mysterious Kagome?
Gilthunder mentally shook himself. Now was not the time to come off as a bumbling idiot. She'd asked a question. He should answer it. It was the proper thing to do.
He cleared his throat. "Uh, yes. I know Howzer. We work together, and he's my best friend. Are you Kagome?"
"Yes. My name is Kagome Higurashi," she introduced, bowing politely. When she straightened, he noticed a spark of fire within her eyes. "The next time I see your so-called best friend, I'm going to murder him. I figured you should know just in case you end up needing to look for him."
Shocked, all he could do was blink incredulously. "Why would you do that?"
Kagome huffed, digging her cell phone out. Her slim fingers danced across the screen before showing him text messages she'd exchanged with Howzer. "Because," she said, "that idiot sent me to the café across the street – and he didn't even tell me what you looked like! I almost got the cops called on me because I kept bothering all the guys in there who weren't sitting with other people. The least he could've done was tell me your name!"
As she continued to rant and promise a brutal, merciless death upon one of his closest friends, Gilthunder couldn't help taking in her fiery personality and the way her eyes sparkled with life. Her cheeks were flushed with emotion. She was definitely different from Margaret. Almost her complete opposite, in fact.
And yet, he looked forward to continuing his blind date with her.
