Water Treatment.
It was a beautiful day in Knothole, everyone was going about their day peacefully, when suddenly…
"AGGGHHHH!"
An unmistakable streak of blue followed that scream, zipping and swerving everywhere until he reached his hutt, and came out again with a flamethrower.
"Sonic's gone mad!" Screamed Penelope Platypus!
Everyone screamed and fled as Sonic marched towards another cottage and inside, he found Sally, Tails, Rosie, Rotor and Antione, alarmed by his presence.
"Sonic what are you doing?!" Exclaimed Sally.
"Doing what must be done…" Sonic said seriously, as he glared at the object of his ire…
A spilled glass of water.
"We've already got napkins, the Flamethrower is unnecessary!" Rosie said.
"Water invades our home! It must die!" Sonic shouted.
"You're gonna burn the whole cottage down!" Rotor exclaimed.
And he, Sally and Tails rushed Sonic before he could pull the trigger and tried to wrestle the Flamethrower off of him, much to his indignation!
"NO! THE THING MUST DIE! IT MUST DIE!" Sonic ranted.
"You know Water Extinguishes fire right?!" Sally exclaimed.
Later,
Sonic soon tied to his own bed, as Dr. Quack's wife, Elizabeth, watched over him, Sally, Tails and the others exited the room.
"Ugh, he goes insane every time he's around Water." Said Sally, shaking his head.
"Sonic sure doesn't like water, does he?" Asked Tails.
"Yeah, It all started when we first came to Knothole." Explained Sally. "Specifically, the first time we saw the great lake, the mystical entity that supplies us with the Power Rings, when we saw a Power Ring come out, Sonic tried to collect it and fell in! Luckily, one of the original Freedom Fighters rescued him, He's been paranoid about water ever since."
"But he's stood before the edge of the lake before and he's never reacted like that before!" Said Rotor.
"Because he knows the great lake produces the Power Rings." Said Sally. "And they usually came out at the edge of the lake. Besides that, never let him near water. ever."
"Does he know one of the Chaos Emerald sites is aquatic?" Asked Rosie.
Meanwhile,
Far from the Great Forest, was a cave in the base of the Mountainside, there within, was a large Labyrinth of Tunnels carved out long ago, ravaged by the years of flooding.
Badniks were scouring this place, Burrow-bots drilled into the old stones, Choppers and Jaws patrolled the water and Orbinauts floated around, their spiked balls circling around.
Overseeing all of this, was Snively and the Badnik Commander, Chop Trident.
"Move on to the next point of interest." Snively ordered. "The Unidasu should be able to pick up traces of Chaos Energy further down."
"Signs of civilization have been reported up ahead." Said Chop Trident. "Local resistance is anticipated."
"Ah yes, the Trouts." Snively noted. "I heard rumors of their existence in the Labyrinth, always playing neutrality, We'll just have to clear them out."
"The Doctor would have to be informed first." Chop Trident pointed out.
"Hmm, you're right." Snively said, as he turned to a Burrowbot bringing up a monitor, The image of Robotnik flashed on screen.
"Snively, have you found the next Chaos Emerald yet?" Robotnik asked.
"In the process Sir." Said Snively. It must be deeper in the Labyrinth, with the Trouts I suspect, what should I do about them?"
Robotnik growled. "Crush them, and if they have the Chaos Emerald or know anything about it, take it from them!"
Meanwhile,
Deep in the Labyrinth was an ancient city, left behind long ago, At least by its original builders, nowadays, a Colony of Trouts had made it their home, building a civilization that kept itself hidden and unconcerned with the affairs of the outside world.
"And that is why!" Said a noble sounding voice. "We cannot continue to allow this injustice to stand! Rise up my fellow Labyrinthians, Rise up and together, let us face the Scourge! Of Dr. Robotnik!"
A Young Trout with Orange hair was standing before the Court of the Labyrinth Kingdom, with the King grumpily standing at his back, while the rest of the Royal court looked on with annoyance.
"For the love of god Surff." Said the King. "We're not taking action against Dr. Robotnik!"
"But why?!" Asked Surff as he whirled around to face the King. "How can we stand by as that overlander terrorizes the lands? Enslaves the masses! Burn their Children-!"
"We don't give a damn about the land!" Said King Saline. "We trouts settled in this Labyrinth long ago to escape the wars of those Idiotic furballs and pinkskins! The Kingdom of Acorn or Robotnik Regime or whatever they call themselves! Are of no concern to us!"
"For now." Said Surff. "You'll see!"
"For the love of Gaia, you don't actually care about this stuff!" Said King Saline. "You just wanna impress my daughter!"
On the throne beside the king, sat a young female trout with black hair, wearing a black dress, and golden bracelets, this made Surff blush.
"Well, uh…" He fumbled with his words. "I mean, She is pretty hot in that leotard.
This made the Princess blush and the King… well you can probably guess.
Before Surff knew it, he was tossed out of the palace and sent bouncing down the stairs.
As he picked himself up, he suddenly found Bubbles standing before him.
"You said my leotard was hot?" She asked.
Surff blushed. "Uh… Did I? Well uh, thanks cause it's so-"
"And I kind of like that you wanna fight Robotnik." The Princess walked up to him and wrapped her arms around him. "Don't listen to my father, he just thinks the Doctor's a waste of time."
"Uh, Kind of Bogus…" Surf gulped. "But uh, Princess, doesn't this feel a little to-?"
She pressed a finger on his lips. "Call me Bubbles."
As she leaned in for a kiss, a great explosion occurred, Both turned to see Burrowbots and Unidasu barging into the City, Led by a large Red Fish Robot weilding a trident, Chop Trident.
"Seize the Princess!" He ordered to his Badniks. "Snively's orders!"
A pair of Unidasu fired their balls everywhere, making everyone scatter as three Burrowbots surged forward and grabbed Princess Bubble's.
"AGH! Surff! HELP!" She cried as she was carried off.
"Hey! Let her go you bucket of- Oof!" He was quickly knocked away by Chop Trident and hit the side of the nearest wall, all he could do was watch helplessly as the Badniks carried away the Princess.
Meanwhile,
Sally stood before the assembled team of Rotor, Tails, Antione, Tux and Joe Sushi, behind her was the cave leading to the Labyrinth Zone.
"Alright, The next Chaos Emerald should be in this tunnel." Sally addressed. "Nicole has the location-"
There was a rush of feet and Sonic suddenly appeared. "One Hedgehog reporting for duty!"
"And you're not gonna freak out?" Asked Sally raising an eyebrow.
"Nope, I'm good!" Said Sonic confidently.
"Okay." Sally turned to the lake, pulling to Nicole. "Nicole, Navigation mode."
"Initiating Navigation mode Sally." Came the reply. "Advance Advance two degrees North."
And so the Freedom Fighters entered the cave and found a whole passageway of limestone caverns.
"This is it." Said Sally. "The Labyrinth Zone."
"What do you think we'll find in there?" Asked Tails.
"If I had to guess." Said Sonic. "Water, Rocks, Water, Creepy Gargoyles, Did I mention Water?"
"So which way do we go now?" Asked Rotor.
"Head North then turn dowd east to west." Nicole replied.
"Well, you heard her." Said Sally. "Let's get a move on."
And they headed into the Labyrinth, as they moved deeper, Sonic tried very hard to put on a straight face.
"Don't freak out, Don't freak out." He said in his head. "It's not so bad, It's not so bad…"
Then they came upon a large body of Water, leading into the more submerged tunnels.
"Okay maybe a little bad, Maybe a little bad." Sonic said to himself mentally, as fear began to rise in him.
Sally knelt down and looked deep in the water before them. "Well, looks like we'll have to swim to get through the rest of the way."
Sonic's eyes bulged. "BAD! BAD! BAD! BAD!"
"Right, Me Rotor and Tux are the best swimmers." Said Joe. "We'll go in first."
And the two Walruses and the Penguin dived in first, while the others waited above ground, at first all was quiet, but then, a few bubbles came up, followed by ripples in the water, Sonic and Sally watched with interest.
And then, the three swimmers burst into the surface, covered in Choppers.
"Yeow!" They all cried as they jumped back to shore, Tails, Sonic, Antione and Sally quickly helped them back to shore and destroyed the fish badniks.
"Yeah, no go, there's Jaws and Choppers in there!" Said Rotor.
"No prob!" Said Sonic. "We can… hopefully take care of them!"
Just then, Several Burrobots popped out of the ground, making the Freedom Fighters jump and causing Sonic to lose his balance and fall into the Water!
"Sonic!" Cried Sally!
Meanwhile,
Sonic opened his eyes and desperately kept his mouth shut, his feet touched the ground as he looked around desperately, he than saw several Jaws and Choppers coming at him, without thinking, Sonic jumped up at them, smashing a few of them with a spin attack, he kept up the defense for a while, but eventually started to run out of air, than all of a sudden, A young Trout with orange hair appeared.
"Hey!" He said, pointing to a patch of bubbles. "Injest a Bubble! Quickly!"
Sonic scrambled towards the patch as a large bubble emerged, he quickly ingested it and felt oxygen return to his lungs, just as the rest of his friends jumped into the water.
"Follow me!" Said the Trout. "There's an air pocket not far from here!"
And the Freedom Fighters followed the Trout through the winding passages of the Labyrinth until they finally emerged from the water and entered a chamber, full of mysterious images on the walls and crystal formations that illuminated everything.
"Wow, nice digs." Said Sonic.
"We can't thank you enough." Said Sally as she rang out her jacket.
"My name is Surff." Said the Trout. "I was setting out to find you guys, Are you the Freedom Fighters?"
"Yes, and proud of it." Said Tux, puffing up his chest.
"Thank goodness." Said Surff as he shook Sonic and Sally's hands. "Robotnik's minions are attacking the Labyrinth!"
"We know, the Badniks were a good indication." Said Rotor.
"And they've kidnapped the Daughter of our Kingdom!" Went on Surff. "The Princess Bubbles!"
"Zut Alors!" Exclaimed Antione. "Another Princess in danger!"
"They're after the Chaos Emerald." Said Sally. "Do you know where to find it?"
"Yeah, that's probably where they're headed." Said Surff. "But you'll need my help to get there, this Labyrinth is filled with traps!"
"Alright then." Said Sonic. "Lead the way Surff, if you've got a sub, then it's about to sail!"
Surff led the Freedom Fighters off into the Caverns.
Meanwhile,
Back in the Center Kingdom, King Saline was being hailed by Snively.
"As you can see your Highness." Snively explained from his side of the view screen. "The safe return of your daughter depends heavily on your cooperation."
"You will return my daughter now! You pencil nosed pile of putrid purpose!" The King demanded.
"The Princess will stay in our custody, until the object of our expedition is acquired." Snively rebuked.
"And what's that?" Asked Saline.
"You know perfectly well what we seek." Snively said. "The Chaos Emerald, you will direct us to its whereabouts, or face the consequences of defying the Robotnik Regime."
"You won't find the Emerald here." Said King Saline. "Not if you intend to go deeper into your peril."
"Thankfully where we go, your Daughter too will go, He He." Snively chuckled smugly. "And if you dare to send anyone after us, I will have her Roboticized! Farewell."
And with that, the viewscreen shut off, leaving the King to stew in his rage.
"That wretched twerp! The Impertinence! The Gaul!" He roared. "I… I…! I'll do what he says… I have no choice."
"Surely they won't get far, your Majesty." Said the Captain of the Guards. "Bubbles knows the traps better than they do.
Meanwhile,
Snively and his minions hurried through a passageway, with Princess Bubbles being carried by two Burrowbots, they turned a corner and rushed through as arrows fired from the walls, three Burrowbots and four Orbinauts went ahead and were all impaled by hidden spikes from above and below!
Snively and his henchman recoiled in their tracks and than went down the other path next to them, they traveled through this new tunnel, turned left again and narrowly avoided getting smashed by a spiked mace, through three more Burrow Bots and the four remaining Unidasu weren't so lucky, regardless they carried on as the path began to slope downwards, another evan bigger spiked ball dropped down and rolled after them, they all yelped and ran faster!
"I can't die like this!" Cried Snively. "It's derivative!"
As they reached the door, it started to close on them, Chop Trident quickly caught the door, holding it up as the others got through and then closed it behind him as the spiked ball crashed into the door.
"Several Badniks lost, sir." Said one of the Five Remaining Burrowbots.
"Great, trust me to split up our forces." Snively groaned. "What else could go wr-AGH!"
Snively ducked as a jet of flame shot out from the other wall.
"Gaia damn it, it's like there's a booby trap every seven seconds-! YEEP!" Snively stopped as a pendulum swung past his face and embedded itself in the wall next to him. "Okay that was… slightly early."
"You'll never get to the Emerald at this rate." Said Princess Bubbles. "Not with the way you're going."
"And I suppose you know the right way to the Emerald?" Snively asked.
"I might." Bubbles conceded. "But If I lead you to it, Will you promise to never come near the Kingdom again?"
"Well, I can't speak for Dr. Robotnik can I?" Snively shrugged.
"Then I refuse!" Bubbles declared.
"You have no choice in the matter." Said Snively, as the Burrowbots shoved her forward, pointing their droll noses at her. "And since you've technically volunteered as a guide just now, Chop Trident?"
The Badnik Commander looked down the path ahead and a small compartment opened in his head, emitting A retinal scan Before them.
"An extra precaution to make sure we're more mindful of our surroundings." Said Snively. "Work smarter, not harder."
And they pressed on ahead.
Meanwhile,
On the other side of the Labyrinth Zone, The Freedom Fighters cascaded down a waterslide, tumbling and bumping around for what felt like hours.
"It's like we're -oof! In a loop! Ow!" Said Sally as she was rocked around.
"There's a switch on that ledge over there!" Said Surff. "Someone just needs to press it."
"Water! WATER! GET ME OUT OF THE FUCKING WATER!" Sonic mentally screamed.
Tails managed to jump off the slide and fly over to the switch Surff mentioned as he landed on top of it, a passage opened in the slide. "Everyone, get in!"
And the group then dropped down into the tunnel and tumbled into it, Tails quickly joined them as the entrance closed behind them.
"Oh… I'm gonna feel that…" Rotor groaned, as the Freedom Fighters picked themselves up.
"Where to now?" Asked Sally.
"If they're going after the Chaos Emerald." Said Surff pondering. "The quickest route would be… down this way!"
He jumped onto a ledge and pressed another switch, and the ground opened up to reveal another passage, filled with water.
"You've got to be kidding!" Sonic groaned.
"This way everyone." Said Sally as she dived in, the others followed, as Sonic looked on, he took a deep breath and plunged in, He quickly avoided a spinning chain and mace and joined the others as they waded through the vast waters and traps that lay before them, Sonic could barely build any traction, but eventually, they all reached another Air Pocket and Surff led them down another Tunnel.
"Jesus, how long is this place?!" Sonic moaned.
"Not much further." Said Surff. "Just a few more miles, we can take the winches."
"Winches?" Asked Tails.
Surff led them to another room and showed them a whole network of stone platforms carried by water driven contraptions.
"These will get us across some of the other traps." Surf explained. "And from there, we get to the last staircase!"
"Last Staircase?" Asked Tux.
"The End of the Labyrinth." Said Surff.
"And possibly where the Chaos Emerald is." Said Sonic. "Alright let's go!"
And he jumped onto one of the platforms.
"Glad to see someone's regained their confidence." Said Sally as she hopped on next, followed by the others.
Meanwhile,
The Burrowbots soon drilled through the wall as Snively and his entourage stepped through it, meeting with the rest of their surviving forces.
"Sir, we have finally arrived." Said A Burrowbot. "And a Squadron of Unidasu has secured the Portal."
"Excellent." Said Snivley. "Prepare my Egg-Mobile, I will claim the gem myself."
"You'll die first!" Said Princess Bubbles.
"Oh quite the contrary my dear." Said Snively, as the Burrowbots prepared his Mobile. "This time, I will be the lucky one, and not even the Freedom Fighters can-"
Just then, there was a large splash coming from behind them, and from a pool, Sonic emerged, gasping and coughing as he grasped for land, followed by Surff.
"Oh, yeah, trust me to jump in head first!" Sonic said irritably.
"Hey man!" Said Surff. "I didn't know the water would overflow that cavern!"
"Surff!" Exclaimed Bubbles.
"Oh bloody hell!" Snively groaned. "Why must this rodent always ruin a bad thing?!"
Sonic got to his feet. "Oh and you'd know a bad thing, wouldn't you? Took the long way, Sciddly?"
"It's Snively!" Snively shouted, banging a fist. "And you're about to be a drowned rat when we're done! Chop Trident!"
Chop Trident jumped forward, followed by Several Burrowbots and Unidasu as they prepared to fight Sonic and Surff.
"You better prepare to be skewered!" Chop Trident snarled as he aimed his Trident, poised for the kill.
"I think you've got that backwards!" Said Sally as she also emerged from the lake, followed by Tails, Antione, Rotor, Joe and Tux.
"Oh yippee, the supporting cast." Snively drawled.
"You give us back the Princess now!" Surff demanded.
"Hmm, how about "Screw you?" Snively replied. "ATTACK!"
The Badniks lunged forward, engaging the Freedom Fighter in fierce combat, Sonic and Tails spin attacked through Burrowbots, Antone deflected the Unidasu's spike balls with his Swords, Rotor grabbed a Burrowbot and used it's arm Cannon to fire at the other Badniks, while Sally, Tux, Surff and Joe confront Chop Trident.
The Badnik commander lunged forward, swiping and slashing at his opponents, driving them back until Joe grabbed the tips of his tridents and held him back, while Sally slunk near the humanoid Choppers legs and kicked at it, sending Chop Trident to one knee, but also jabbing Joe in the shoulder in the Process, Tux and Surff pounce on him banging at his chromedome, until Chop flung them off, this gave Joe Sushi enough time to push through his wound and punch Chop Trident right in the face, With a massive dent in it's head, Chop Trident staggered around, until Sally gave it a great jumping kick and sent it toppling into the water, where it sank away to never be seen again.
"Surff! Over here!" Said Bubbles as she ran to the young Trout.
"Oh no you don't!" Snively quickly grabbed Princess Bubbles and revved up his Egg Mobile's engines. "We shant delay any more!"
Sonic stepped forward. "Hey! Let the lady go needle nose!"
"Stop me if you dare, Hedgehog!" And Snively flew his pod upwards, Sonic and Surff gave chase up the winding passageway, narrowly avoiding spears and flame spewing Gargoyles, as they kept pace with Snively, with the Water suddenly rising behind them, Sonic looked back to see this and immediately began to hurry faster.
Soon they reached the top, where the remaining Badniks stood guard over the ring.
"At last!" Snively juvenility exclaimed, as she dropped Bubbles. "The Emerald will soon be mine!"
"Oh no you don't you twerp!" Sonic sped towards Snively as they both disappeared into the ring.
"Surff?" Asked Bubbles. "Where'd the Hedgehog go?"
"I don't know." Said Surff, but then they saw Tails coming out of the water, splashing. "Help! The others!"
Both Trouts dived into the water to help.
Meanwhile,
In the Special Zone, Sonic felt the ground was non-existent as he scrambled about trying to grab something, eventually he clung onto a bumper and looked round.
"Okay, now this is a little more open than last time." He said to himself.
Just then, Snively appeared behind him. "You're out of your depth now, Rodent."
And he fired a laser at Sonic, which the Hedgehog immediately jumped away from, using nearby Bumper, Sonic propelled himself at Snively's craft, hit it, and struck a down bumper, speeding up everything and and sending him into an "R" Bumper, witch changed the direction, both adversaries saw a familiar Diamond Cluster.
"THE EMERALD!"
Snively fired at the Cluster, blowing it apart and sending the Emerald flying off, Sonic jumped first before Snively and quickly grabbed it!
FLASH!
Sonic emerged from the Ring and landed on his feet, back in the Labyrinth, and with the Emerald in hand, while Snively crashed behind him.
"Sonic!" The Hedgehog turned to see Surff and Bubbles helping them out of the water.
"Hey guys!" Sonic said.
"You got the Emerald!" Cheered Tails.
"Way to go Man!" Said Surff.
"Yeah, no doubt about it." Said Sonic.
"Hm, Modest as ever I see." Sally smirked.
From the corner, Snively groaned as he picked himself up, seeing all was lost he jumped back into his Egg Mobile and flew off. "The Doctor won't be pleased with this… I hate my life."
Later,
The Freedom Fighters, Surff and Bubbles returned to the main city, and gathered for a hero's celebration.
"For your courageous rescue of my daughter and in fighting the forces of Dr. Robotnik." Declared King Saline as Surff knelt before him. "I now pronounce you, Sir Surff the Trout!"
Everyone cheered as Princess Bubbles came up and kiss Surff on the cheek, Sonic and the others watched on, each having been awarded medals for their help.
"Hey, thanks for all your help." Said Surff as he and Bubbles approached them. "If you ever need help against Robotnik, just give me a holler!"
"You've been a great ally to us, Surff." Said Sally. "We'd be glad of your help against Robotnik.
"Yeah, we're all in the fight together." Said Sonic. "Just as long as it doesn't involve-"
"Sonic." Sally said, giving him a warning look.
"Okay, Okay…" Sonic said, trying to keep his cool, while holding up the Chaos Emerald. "Only four more to go anyway."
"And we'll get them all before Robotnik, that's for sure." Said Tails.
"You bet ace." Said Sonic as he ruffled the young Foxes head.
There was a long silence, and then Sonic broke down screaming.
"WATER!"

This chapter was a lot of work, and possibly my favorite so far, I enjoyed taking Sonic's aquaphobia to new heights of mentality, but luckily it didn't stop him from being the hero he truly is.
The Character's Surff, Princess Bubbles and King Saline come from AoSTH, From the Episode "Submerged Sonic" Which depicted them as Mermaids and set them in the Labyrinth Zone, I felt including them here would be perfect, but I also made the Trouts as opposed to Merpeople.
