"Murmurs of the heart, this is my end..."
As the moon hung high in the sky, a creature roamed the dark, cobbled streets of a small town in the northern region of Melromarc. Its hulking form moved silently, blending into the shadows as it searched for its next victim.
"But my creation, roams free somewhere distant..."
Amidst the quiet of the night, a woman hurried home after a long day at the market as she had to deal with the scandal of the royal knights, searching for the shield demon who she didn't care about. She clutched her earnings tightly, her mind already planning how to spend it on a new silk dress for her closet.
But her thoughts were interrupted as she felt a sharp tug on her purse. She turned to see a man, his face obscured by a scarf, trying to steal her hard-earned money. Fear gripped the woman as she struggled against the thief, but her efforts were in vain. He pushed her into the ground and took out a knife from his pocket, demanding her to give him anything else she might be holding in her possession
"Walking, when it shouldn't even breathe..."
Suddenly, a figure from the night's fog came into view, its yellowed eyes fixed on the two as they seemed to glow in the place light of the moon. The burglar and the woman stood watching the figure approach, one taking a step back in relief while the other showed aggression, both soon replaced with a sense of utter disgust followed by fear as they get a good look at it
"Stitched up by my defects, piece by piece..."
It was a tall man with an incredibly large frame, his skin seemed to be stretched and unnatural with it's wide range of green colors amongst different parts of its body since some were more pale than others, all of with seemed to have been stitched together in a unholy amalgamation. But despite the ragged clothes covering his chest, a glowing heart could be seen as it was emanating light from within the monster, almost like lightning capture in a bottle
It's head seemed to have such a beautiful face, but wrong in every way possible like a painting of various different people had been cut and put together to form a new person, it had screws coming from the neck as a way to keep it from falling off, the yellow eyes of the creature also had a utter beauty to them but it still was abnormal
But a fleeting detail that they don't take notice is behind the monster's back, a silver shield with a gem resting in the hulking figure's possession
"That's why God doesn't revive anyone, to go against the cycle of life"
The thief warned the monster to not move an inch or it would strike him down, but the creature did not care for his warning. The burglar stabbed him right in the guts, but the monster did not react so the man kept stabbing it until the hulking creature grabbed his hand and crushed it. The man let's go off the offensive as he recoils back in pain, but the monster looks down on the knife stuck in his body, with an angry expression soon taking the place of the creatures once bland and neutral look
With a guttural roar, the creature pounced on the man, its massive hands wrapping around his neck. The woman's heart raced in terror as she watched the creature take down the criminal with ease, strangling the life out of him despite the attempts to resist, before a loud crack could be heard and the burglar falls to the ground. As the creature loomed over the lifeless body of the thief, the woman couldn't help but feel a sense of pure dread as now she was next.
"In the end, I am just a fool with a dream..."
The creature looked at the woman as it took a step closer, having a hand stretched out towards her, the woman walked back in fear. She screamed as she did her best to run away into the night, find somewhere to hide from the horror she had witnessed
The monster watched her leave, its hand returning to its side, it grabbed the body of the thief it killed as the darkness of the night made it disappear into the shadows carrying another victim
"I didn't help anyone, all I did was make a monster"
[Author's notes]
Happy Halloween! Decided to write a short story featuring one of my favorite fictional monsters, also because I have been reading the Universal monsters Frankenstein comic, which is a big recommendation if you like monster stories that aren't focused on showing gore and cheap scares
