I'm sorry for the massive delay between chapters, but work has been so exhausting the last few weeks that I haven't been able to get much work done in a timely manner and needed time off to relax. That also resulted in this chapter not being as good as I could make it, but I also think there's already been too much time chapter-wise between the announcement of the Rating Game tournament and the match between Rias and Sona, so this chapter is going to be on the shorter side. Anyway, I hope you all enjoy!
It was the morning after Luke had finally attained his Balance Breaker without any risky conditions. Karlel was flying with Luke in her arms while Mythra was keeping up with ease toward what appeared to be a facility deep in a mountainous area of the Underworld.
"That's Genesis's Headquarters?" Luke inquired.
"Yep." Karlel confirmed. "It may seem like a supervillain thing to have such a high-tech facility in the middle of the mountains, but it's in case of any experiments or tests going awry. We wouldn't want any civilians getting hurt, would we?"
"How are you so sure they aren't doing anything suspicious?" Mythra questioned.
"Once Grimm Red introduced their organization and their goals to the Four Great Satans, Ajuka Beelzebub made that facility for them." Karlel explained. "If they were up to anything, they'd be caught and arrested on the spot. There's nothing to worry about."
Karlel and Mythra landed in front of the building with the former letting Luke down, with Mythra changing into Pyra upon landing. As soon as everyone was on solid ground, they were approached by a man in his mid to late forties with purple hair and amber eyes wearing a black business suit with a white dress shirt underneath.
"You must be the Sapphire Dragon Emperor and the Aegis." The man said with a calm voice. "Welcome to Genesis Headquarters. We've been expecting you, Sapphire Dragon Emperor and the Aegis. It's a pleasure to finally meet you. I am one of the Directors of Genesis, Lorenzo Purple (Age 47). Right this way."
Lorenzo led them inside the building and down the pristine hallways. The inside of the facility was not only high-tech with automatic sliding doors and ID scanners, but also very well maintained as the floors were spotless. When Luke looked at Lorenzo, he realized that his training had heightened his perception of others' demonic power and sensed something unusual about him.
Is he… human? Luke wondered.
Luke knew that the other Directors of Genesis he has met so far were all Devils, so this was an unusual sight as Lorenzo didn't seem to have any demonic power. After a bit of walking, Lorenzo took them all inside an elevator and Luke was surprised at how many buttons there were compared to what he had seen of the facility.
Just how big is this place?! Oh, there must be more floors underground.
Lorenzo pressed one of the floor buttons and the elevator doors closed before it started moving downward. It felt like a minute had passed before the elevator finally stopped and opened up on the fifth floor underground, revealing another hallway. The facility didn't feel uninhabited, but there were very few people they came across along their way. They kept following Lorenzo until he stopped at one of several doors, held a card key up to a scanner and it automatically opened.
"Sapphire Dragon Emperor, Aegis, this will be your room during your stay here." Lorenzo stated.
"Pyra and I are sharing a room?" Luke blushed at the mere idea.
"It is part of your Regalia training." Lorenzo explained. "Executive Director Red will explain everything later. Please, get yourself situated in your room in the meantime. Director Green will come and take you to your training grounds when everything is ready. Have a good day, Sapphire Dragon Emperor, Aegis."
After giving a polite bow, Lorenzo gave Luke the card key for the room, turned around and walked away.
Mythra's probably fuming right now. Luke thought with extreme worry on his face. She probably hasn't forgotten that sleepwalking incident she had at Melody's place before coming to the Underworld.
"I-I…" Pyra was blushing, look away from Luke and pressing her index fingers against each other. "Will be sharing a room with Luke?"
Suddenly, Luke and Pyra felt Karlel smack their backs with a huge smile on her face.
"Don't get too carried away while I'm gone, okay, kids?" Karlel teased them while trying to contain her laughter. "Rias would kill you if we find Pyra with a baby on the way."
"Wh-wh-wh-why would you say that?!" Luke screamed with a beat red face.
"Because your reactions are too cute not to!" Karlel grinned before waving. "I'll be off. See you two in five days."
Karlel walked off in the direction they came from and left Luke and Pyra alone with their embarrassing thoughts. They then entered their room and saw a clean room with a single wide bed that was big enough for the two of them and still have plenty of room for other guests, a single television set and a western style bathroom with a toilet, tub, shower, and sink.
"U-ummm…" Luke stammered at seeing the lone bed in the entire room. "Do you want me to sleep on the floor, Pyra?"
"Oh, no!" Pyra insisted while waving her hands. "I couldn't let you lose a good night's sleep over that! I'm sure Grimm has his reasons for doing this, but… I can't help but feel nervous…"
"S-same… Which side of the bed do you want?"
After coming to an agreement about which of them would be first to take a bath at night, among other things, the door opened up and Belinda was standing at the entrance.
"Ms. Green!" Luke ran up to her. "It feels like it's been forever since we last saw you!"
"It's only been three weeks." Belinda tilted her head in confusion, even though she understood that Luke was using an expression. "Has it really felt that long for you?"
"Mmm…" Luke's cheeks turned pink as he looked away.
"That's strange…" Belinda looked downward and placed her hand on her chest.
"Are you okay?" Pyra asked.
"I just felt this sense of… warmth?" Belinda tried her best to explain. "Right where my heart is. It's a pleasant feeling, but I am not sure if it is a sign of something dangerous. After I've escorted you to Executive Director Red for the final part of your training, I will seek immediate medical attention."
Ms. Green is just as emotionally clueless as ever…
Belinda, Luke and Pyra took the elevator to a lower floor of the facility and exited on the tenth floor underground where there was a wide open space with large rocks all over the place.
"This is the training field used by the Directors of Genesis." Belinda said. "Although, we are permitting you and Mr. Hirano to use it for your Regalia training."
"Spiral's here, too?" Luke questioned.
"Mr. Hirano has been here for the last two weeks, along with his Regalia partner." Belinda then pointed ahead of her. "They should both be up ahead. I must be off to see if I am well. I wish you the best of luck on your training, Luke Sigmund."
Belinda went back inside the elevator and once she was gone, Luke and Pyra headed in the direction she pointed toward earlier until they saw a few familiar figures in their sights.
"Ah, I see you have finally arrived, Sapphire Dragon Emperor, Aegis." Grimm was the first to notice them.
"Oh, Luke-kun, Pyra-chan, it's been a while." Spiral greeted them as soon as he saw them. "I'd ask if you had unlocked your Balance Breaker yet, but considering we're kind of rivals right now, that would be putting you at a disadvantage."
Aria quickly ran over and stopped right in front of Pyra's face with an excitable expression. "You're the Aegis?!"
"Uh, y-yeah…?" Pyra nervously replied.
"Us Regalia wouldn't exist if not for you!" Aria said with stars in her eyes. "If you think about it, you're kind of like our mother!"
Both Luke and Pyra were not sure how to respond to Aria referring to the latter as her mother.
"Heheheh, that is true in a matter of speaking." Grimm chuckled.
Grimm's words had brought a certain question to Luke's mind.
"Can Regalia even have children?" Luke asked with his head tilted and arms crossed.
"Of course." Virtue spoke up. "The Aegis and the Regalia might not have been born naturally, but we have similar physiologies to other organisms, including reproductive organs."
"In other words, let's say you and the Aegis decide to fuck and you can't control yourselves." Sin decided to weigh in. "It's definitely possible you'd knock her up, Sapphire Dragon Emperor. But hey, I wouldn't blame you when your partner's got a body like that!"
The faces of Luke and Pyra turned a burning hot shade of red at Sin's vulgar words.
"Must you be so explicit with your words, Sin?" Virtue side-eyed her counterpart.
"Come on, it's not like I said 'cock' and 'pussy'." Sin casually placed her arms behind her head.
"You just did…" Virtue sighed while lightly smacking herself in the face.
Grimm cleared his throat to quickly change the subject. "Anyway, shall we commence with your training?"
Thank you, Executive Director Red! Luke thought in relief.
"A Regalia might be powerful on their own, but they cannot reach their true potential without their Wielder." Grimm began. "A Wielder and their Regalia are two individuals fighting as one. The more the two are in sync and the stronger their bond, the more powerful they become. As such, Sapphire Dragon Emperor, part of your training here will involve building the trust between yourself and the Aegis."
"Is that why Pyra and I are sleeping in the same bed?" Luke inquired.
"Correct. Understanding your partner's sleep patterns and heartbeats might seem superfluous, but you would be surprised how much that improves the coordination between Wielder and Regalia."
"Take it from us." Spiral said as he pointed his thumb at Aria. "It really has helped with our teamwork. Thankfully, we weren't asked to bathe together." He blushed and rubbed the back of his head at that last sentence.
"Come on! You're teenage boys!" Sin teased the young men. "You know you want to!"
"In addition to your basic training, you and the Aegis will be performing exercises designed to improve your synchronization." Grimm continued. "Follow me."
Grimm alone guided Luke and Pyra to a more secluded area of the training field.
"Please, sit down." Grimm motioned his hands toward the ground.
Luke and Pyra did as Grimm instructed and sat on the ground.
"Now, face each other."
The pair turned their bodies so that they were now facing each other.
"Good. Do not take your sights off of your partner until I get back. I should be back in approximately one hour."
"W-we're just staring at each other for an hour?!" Luke exclaimed that they were asked to do such a simple thing for a long period of time.
"As you watch your partner, you may find something new about their appearance and mannerisms." Grimm explained. "As I said, the more you understand each other, the better you will be able to coordinate and the stronger you will both become."
"Come to think of it, the more Hector and Mythra got to know each other, they became much stronger than they already were." Pyra said.
"Exactly." Grimm confirmed. "Which is why I want you to watch the other's movements for the next hour. You may blink, so long as you don't take your eyes off of your partner."
Grimm left and Luke and Pyra were left to just stare at each other for the next hour. The more Luke kept his eyes on Pyra, the pinker his face became.
How else was this going to go?! Luke thought. Pyra's so cute and beautiful, of course I'm going to turn into a tomato if I keep staring at her! Just looking at her face… There isn't a blemish to be seen. Wait a minute, is she… blushing? This must be embarrassing for her, too.
Pyra seemed to notice the way Luke was looking at her and gave him a soft smile and light giggle, which briefly made Luke's heart skip a beat and his face's color change from pink to red.
"I didn't need an exercise to know you get flustered easily around girls." Pyra told him. "But I've noticed how your body behaves when that happens."
"H-huh?"
"Aside from your face turning red, your breathing becomes a bit more inconsistent and your muscles tighten up. It's like… you're afraid of something…"
Luke hesitated to speak. "… I know keeping secrets goes against the training we're supposed to be going through… but I… I'm not ready to talk about it…"
"I think… that's for the best. I doubt forcing our issues onto each other would be helpful for our training."
"So, you have problems, too, huh? Well, at the very least we're admitting to having them."
"There is one other thing I noticed about you…"
"Hm?"
"It's kind of faint, but… your eyes look a lot like your father's."
"Really?" Luke was about to shift his head, but quickly remembered that he was not supposed to take his eyes off of Pyra. "Whenever I see my eyes in a mirror, they always look like my mother's."
"I don't blame you for not noticing it yet. I mean, I only saw it just a few seconds ago, but I don't see it anymore."
"Maybe you were just seeing things."
"No. I know what I saw, but I understand if you don't believe me."
"Pyra?"
"Hm?"
"When I was fighting Kuroka last night… She said something about me having 'the aura of a Kaelian'. I don't know what that means, but… it got me thinking…"
"Thinking of what?"
"That I'm not… who I think I am…"
"What are you talking about?" Pyra gave Luke a reassuring smile. "You're Luke Sigmund, and nothing can ever change that."
In the facility's infirmary, Belinda was receiving a medical examination from an extremely beautiful woman with long and curly blonde and a voluptuous figure highlighted by the nurse's uniform she was wearing.
"Devils rarely get sick!" The woman cheerfully said to Belinda. "It's probably nothing to worry about! Anyway, can you tell me what your symptoms were?"
"Hmmm…" Belinda tried to recall the strange feelings she had. "Well, I greeted Luke before escorting him and the Aegis to Executive Director Red. When I questioned if it felt like such a long time since we've last seen each other, he looked away with an unusual expression. That is when I felt my heart warm up."
"Oh?" The blonde woman became very interested.
"I am sure I haven't eaten anything that would cause heartburn or gastrointestinal distress. Do you know what the problem might be, Gloria?"
"I think I might know and you have nothing to worry about!" Gloria Yellow (Age 23), one of the Directors of Genesis, smiled with hearts in her eyes. "My diagnosis… is a case of budding love!"
With her expressionless face, Belinda just stared at Gloria before tilting her head in confusion.
"I never thought I'd see the day!" Gloria looked like she was on the verge of joyful tears. "Our dear Belinda has taken her first steps into the world of romance! And with the Sapphire Dragon Emperor, no less! I wonder if he's already started gathering his harem… I heard dragons have a tendency to draw harems."
"… Are you sure about the conclusion you came to, Gloria?"
"When it comes to health and love, there's no one at Genesis more knowledgeable than me!"
"I cannot argue with that. If you are sure that there is nothing else wrong with me, I will be off."
"Waaaaaait!"
Belinda tried to leave the room, but Gloria quickly blocked the entrance with her body after skidding across the floor.
"If you don't show this young man how you feel, you may regret it for the rest of your life! And as a Devil, that's a super long time! You need to be sure Luke loves you enough to join his harem, even if you aren't the legal wife! Consider this doctor's orders!"
Belinda looked at Gloria with another look completely devoid of expression for several seconds.
"… Very well, then. If it is the doctor's orders…" Belinda accepted Gloria's words without a single hint of protest.
"I'm rooting for you, Belinda!" Gloria gave her friend a thumb up.
After completing some exercises and training, Luke and Pyra were having lunch with Spiral and Aria.
"Did you have to go through the same stuff we did, Spiral?" Luke inquired.
"Oh yeah." Spiral answered. "I was skeptical at first, too, but after a while, I could feel the payoff."
"Spiral and I have gotten so much closer ever since we got here!" Aria brightly added. "Did you know that he sleeps with a stuffed kitten named Mrs. Mew Mew?"
"Uhhh… No…" Luke stared at Spiral and Aria, feeling somewhat uncomfortable.
"Um, Aria, they didn't need to know that." Spiral nervously told his partner.
"You know, I already forgot." Luke tried his best to erase the embarrassing thought from his memory.
"I can tell you're lying." Aria innocently said.
"You can't tell a lie around Aria-chan." Spiral pointed out. "She'll know."
"How does she do that?" Pyra asked.
"You know Melody-sama's power, right?" Spiral quizzed.
"The Power of Sound." Luke replied. "Are you saying Aria has the same abilities?"
"Yep!" Aria raised her arm with a smile. "I can sense and control vibrations, just like Spiral's King!"
"Do all Regalia have that ability, or they all have their own unique abilities?" Pyra asked Aria.
"We each have our own abilities and elemental attributes, but we do share one or two sometimes." Aria explained. "I'm sure there is at least a couple of other Regalia with the sound element like me."
"I wasn't aware that sound was an element." Luke raised an eyebrow. "When I think of elements, I think of the classic earth, fire, wind and water."
"Oh, the elements of the Regalia go well beyond the four basic elements."
They all suddenly heard a familiar voice and saw Virtue and Sin walking toward them.
"To be more precise, there are fourteen different elements." Virtue continued. "Earth, fire, wind, water, light, shadow, electric, poison, steel, ice, wood, sound, beast and dragon."
"Aren't beast and dragon kind of similar?" Spiral asked.
"You think a lion and a dragon are the same?" Sin retorted.
"… Thank you for the answer."
"Just how many Regalia are there?" Luke inquired.
"As of now, there are fifty Regalia." Virtue stated. "However, more are being created as we speak. You can expect to see them more often in the Rating Games in the near future."
"Have the rules been decided on Regalia yet?" Pyra asked.
"Fuck yeah, they have!" Sin boasted. "Each team is permitted up to two Regalia, doesn't matter if they're used by one person or two."
"I'm guessing Pyra and Mythra will be counted as two, even though I can only use one of them at a time." Luke said.
"The Great Satans and Master Grimm are still working on the specific rules for the Aegis, but that is likely the decision they will come to." Virtue stated.
"Hold on, I'm a Holy Sword, though." Pyra realized something. "Since the Rating Games are between Devils, wouldn't I be banned?"
"Nah, Azusa-chan was able to use Dyrnwyn when we had our Rating Game against Kaidon." Spiral pointed out. "The system for the game will retire the player before they get hit, so it'll be fine."
"Guess that means Xenovia and Yuuto have the greenlight for Durandal and the Holy Demon Swords." Luke surmised.
"Well, while you're flapping your gums, you're burning your lunch break time." Sin said. "You've got twenty minutes left, so I suggest enjoying it before we put you through the wringer."
Virtue and Sin then left the young men and their partners alone. Luke then noticed Spiral was looking at him as if he was lost in thought.
"Why are you staring at me?"
"Oh, sorry." Spiral chuckled while rubbing the back of his neck. "I just… couldn't help but wonder…"
"Wonder what?"
Spiral exhaled before speaking. "Melody-sama has wanted you in her peerage for a long time, but Rias-senpai got to you first. Sometimes, I think to myself what it would have been like if you and Issei were reincarnated under different masters. Don't get the wrong idea, I'm very grateful to Issei for helping me overcome the turmoil I've had in my heart for some time now. I'm just thinking of what-if scenarios."
"I think I get it." Luke agreed. "Sometimes your mind tries to keep itself occupied and wanders to places it normally wouldn't. Honestly, I sometimes think that, too."
"Ooh, maybe there's an alternate timeline where that happened!" Aria raised her hand. "Where Issei is Miss Gremory's servant and Luke is Miss Melody's servant!"
"But… wouldn't that mean I'd never have met Pyra, Mythra and Kayoko?" Luke asked.
"I have a feeling… our fates are intertwined." Pyra assured her Wielder. "No matter which master you serve, I'm sure I would be alongside you."
Luke stared at Pyra's smiling face and blushed.
"I don't think Pyra would be the only person following you." Spiral chimed in. "Call it a hunch, but I feel Fumiko would be in Melody's peerage with you, too."
"What makes you say that?" Luke questioned.
"Like I just said, it's a hunch. Nothing more than that. Heck, maybe it's you who helped me out a few weeks ago instead of Issei."
"I guess anything is possible when it comes to multiverses." Luke muttered.
"What's a multiverse?" Aria asked.
"It's a theory that there are an infinite number of alternate universes and timelines for each and every possibility." Luke explained. "Very popular in science fiction stories and comic books. What we just discussed could account for so many different universes, your head would spin trying to count even a quarter of them."
"My brain is frying…" Aria was clutching her head, which might as well be emitting smoke.
Once training was done for the day, Luke and Pyra went back to their room and the latter was about to enter the bathroom.
"I'm going to take my bath first." Pyra said. "Is that okay with you?"
"Yeah, that's fine." Luke nodded without hesitation.
"Thanks, Luke."
Pyra went inside the bathroom and closed the door. With nothing to do and no one to talk to, Luke decided to just lie back on the bed and get lost in his thoughts.
I wonder if Spiral is right and there's another timeline where I was in Melody's peerage… I can't imagine myself being the servant of anyone besides President… And if Issei were in her peerage, then would that mean she would be in his harem? And Akeno, too? The mere thought of them with another man… it makes me-
Before Luke could finish his train of thought that went off the rails, he saw the light above the door blinking, indicating that someone was outside in the hallway and wanted to enter. So, Luke went up to the door and pressed the button on a keypad next to it to open it up.
"May I h-"
Luke stopped speaking the moment he saw who was at the door. Standing in front of him was Belinda wearing a green shirt that showed off her shoulders and midriff along with a pitch black skirt and black leggings.
"M-Ms. Green?!" Luke stammered with a blush on his face. "What are you doing here so late?!"
"I was told to come here and see you while wearing these clothes." Belinda plainly replied in a matter of fact tone.
Luke then noticed something familiar about her choice of clothing. "… Are those the clothes I bought for you during our trip to Tokyo?"
"Yes. Hm?" Belinda looked down toward her chest again with slightly curious eyes. There's that feeling again… When he noticed the clothes I was wearing and remembered them, I felt… happy? "How do I look in them?"
"W-well…" Luke's face turned red and he tried looking away for a moment but couldn't do so for very long. "You… you look beautiful."
The moment Belinda heard Luke say that she looked beautiful, she felt that warm sensation in her heart once again and Luke couldn't help but notice the very small smile that appeared on her face that caused his blushing to remain.
"Thank you." Belinda then thought to herself. Gloria told me I had to be sure of any possible feelings I might have for Luke and to see how he would react to the clothes he bought me during our trip together. According to her, we are currently only in what Gloria called the 'Crush Phase' and that based on his reaction and my emotions, her conclusion would be proven correct. I should report this to her immediately.
Luke just stared at Belinda, wondering when she was going to speak again. "… Was there you needed?"
"Yes, but you have already provided it. Thank you, Luke Sigmund."
Belinda walked away, leaving Luke somewhat confused.
"… Did Ms. Green only stop by to ask how she looked in those clothes?" He wondered aloud before closing the bedroom door.
In the middle of the night, Pyra was sleeping soundly while Luke was still wide awake as he was curled up and facing opposite of his partner. Both of them were wearing light white shirts and black shorts so they could remain decent without getting too warm in their sleep.
I'm too nervous. Luke's mind was racing. Pyra is sleeping right next to me. If one of us starts tossing and turning in their sleep, we might end up in a compromising position like last time. Mythra's a terrible sleeper and she might end up pulling me into her chest again… Even though I'd love it, it's not worth her getting angry again.
"… nnn…"
Luke suddenly felt a pair of slender arms wrap around him from behind and he immediately tensed up.
… I hope that isn't who I think it is…
He slowly and carefully turned his head so he wouldn't alert the person in his blind spot and knew who it was the moment he saw the golden blonde hair.
Pyra was just here just a minute ago! Did they switch during their sleep?!
To make matters worse for Luke, he felt a pair of soft mounds pressing against his back.
I can feel her breasts again! They're so big and soft, being in contact with them is driving me crazy! But I'm afraid to wake her up and tell her or else she'll beat the crap out of me!
"… I'm trying to help you get to sleep."
Luke was surprised to hear Mythra speak up like that in her sleep but realized that she wasn't actually asleep this time.
"You're so used to sleeping with Rias and Fumiko every night. You probably haven't gotten the best night's sleep the last couple of weeks without those two at your side all night. So… I thought I would take Rias's place for now. A-and Pyra didn't ask me to do this! I just…"
Mythra took a long pause that left Luke perplexed on asking her to finish.
"You just what?"
"… You might be a closet perv… but I know you have a great respect for women and wouldn't wish any harm on them. I've been nothing but critical of you since we met. I wanted to show you that… I could be as kind as Pyra."
"… Of course you're kind, Mythra."
"Huh?"
"The way you talk about Pyra… your desire to keep her safe… That was when I realized that underneath that strong outward appearance is a caring woman who is just as strong on the inside."
Luke was expecting Mythra to be in denial and call him an idiot like the tsundere she is but was surprised that she was completely silent.
"… Mythra?"
"… Right. Let's… go to sleep. We'll need all the rest we can afford if we're going to complete this training."
As Mythra was clearly not ready to talk about what was bothering her at that moment, Luke took her advice and went to sleep, which he did only a few seconds after resting his eyes.
A/N: That's the end of the chapter, everyone! Again, I'm sorry that the chapter wasn't as good as it should be, but the two months of overtime have really hampered my creative juices. Hopefully, things die down later this week and I'm able to get the next chapter out in a much timelier manner.
Since it's been some time since Belinda last appeared, I decided to give her some more screen time in this chapter as well show more of the budding feelings she and Luke have for each other.
As for that alternate timeline Spiral brought up… well, that's something for another time.
The next chapter will be the party before the match and maybe even the start of the match itself.
