"I want to show you something ladybug. Come with me."
Cora got up from her bed and followed Jamie.
"Where are we going daddy? Is it somewhere fun?"
Jamie let out a quiet laugh.
"We're not leaving the house kiddo. I want to show you something in the garage."
Cora became confused and had a puzzled expression on her face.
"The garage? But what's in the garage? Just the family car and old cans of paint used to paint my room when I was little!"
Jamie smirked at Cora and led her into the garage, turning the light on as they entered.
"Oh, its more than just the family car and some old cans of paint baby girl. I want to show you something really special."
Jamie moved towards something covered that was very large. Cora became curious.
"What's under that covering?"
Removing the covering from over the car, Jamie had a full-fledged smile on his face.
"The Chevelle."
Cora felt her jaw drop. She heard laughing to the entrance of the house through the garage behind her.
"You might want to pick your jaw up off the floor there."
Turning, she saw her mom standing there, watching the exchange between father and daughter. Closing her mouth, Cora turned back to Jamie.
"So, when do we start driving lessons in this bad boy?"
Jamie shook his head and waved Cora's tablet in front of her.
"Not until you've memorized the driver's manual forwards and backwards. Then you've got to take the written test. Once you pass it and get your permit, then we can talk about taking lessons with her."
Cora grabbed for her tablet and beamed at Jamie.
"I'll start studying right away! I'll have this memorized in less than a week."
Jamie eyed her.
"I have no doubt you can accomplish that task ladybug."
Cora became giddy and skipped back towards the entrance from the garage to the house. Before she went through the door, she composed herself.
"I'm not a little girl anymore, I need to act like a grown up. I feel grown up."
Eddie looked at Cora before she went all the way back into the house.
"Honey, you are technically not an adult yet. You still have three years before your an adult. Enjoy being a kid."
Cora nodded and went into the house, leaving the couple alone in the garage. Jamie smirked and pulled Eddie closer to him.
"You know, I seem to remember some fond memories of you and I in this car."
Now Eddie smirked, and she gave him a mischievous look.
"I do. But if I remember correctly nine months down the road, my water broke in this car where I almost gave birth to Sadie."
Wincing, remembering the thought, Jamie changed the subject.
"I almost lost you that day."
Eddie touched foreheads with Jamie and gave him a sympathetic look.
"I'm still here Jamie. You had a hand in saving my life."
Jamie ran a thumb over her left cheek.
"Yes and I am grateful that I am sharing my life with such a beautiful and kick ass woman. Mother to our seven beautiful children. I couldn't ask for anything better."
Eddie put in her two cents as the couple entered the house.
"I think we owe it to ourselves for keeping this family together in the last nine months. Cora has come out stronger. Patrick is more appreciative of his siblings. He's helping our more around the house. Have you noticed his voice is starting to change?"
Jamie plopped down on the couch.
"I think I just got my second or third gray hair on my head. We have a teenage boy in the house now. Yes, his voice is starting to change. He's going to have some moments where he still has a younger voice. It'll get deeper."
Eddie now grew worried.
"This is the part when you tell me 'he's a teenage boy Ed, he's going to have trouble controlling himself.'"
Jamie sighed and nodded.
"This is where I hope he got my disposition. Levelheaded, makes good judgment calls. I don't want him to get a girl pregnant."
The couple nodded in unison and quickly changed the subject when three sets of feet came scurrying down the stairs.
"Mama! Can we watch Frozen?"
Jamie couldn't believe the triplets were 10 years old. They were growing up fast. They would be teenagers in another three years. Sadie and Liam didn't have to worry about that milestone for a long while. Patrick came down the stairs and sighed but put on a smiled and ruffled all three girls' hair.
"Come on peanuts. I'll set up the movie in the den for you. I'll even get you some juice boxes and some popcorn."
Maisie, Keena and Kaitlyn all cheered and rushed to the den. Jamie and Eddie laughed and shook their heads.
"How did we get so lucky with them?"
Jamie leaned his elbow on the back of the couch.
"Keena is more like you everyday babe. Kaitlyn is a mix of both of us and Maisie is the quiet one."
Eddie sighed and leaned back against the couch. They'd been through a lot over the last several years. From Cora and Patrick becoming teenagers, to Cora getting cancer and losing pop 9 weeks into her treatments. She knew it'd been a lot for Jamie. He'd been close to Henry. Probably because he was the youngest. She found him staring at Henry's photo on the wall in the living room. He was lost in thought. Running a hand over
the tears that were staining his left cheek for a moment, Eddie tried to coax Jamie back to her.
"Come back to me lambchop. Where are you?"
Regaining his composure, wiped his face with his hands and stood.
"I'm fine. We should think about starting dinner. Spaghetti sound good? Spaghetti it is."
Eddie gave Jamie a concerned looked. He'd been retreating into himself more lately. She wondered if she should have him talk to someone.
