This Kisara was initially modeled after the same version of the character that I wrote for "Cult of the Dragon King." She became another character entirely as I worked on the story, but a lot of elements stayed.

Mostly, though, I just wanted to make sure my Kisara had a family.

Family is the thesis statement of every YGO story I've ever written.

Henry stumbled out of his chair. "Obelisk?!" he demanded, looking flummoxed beyond reason. "The Tormentor? The Mad God? The Soldier of All Ends?"

"The very same," said Seto. "You see the soldiers fighting there, on our behalf. They fly my banner; they fight, knowing that the great paragons of both Light and Darkness stand behind them. They fear nothing. I won't tell you to fear nothing. I have no intention of promising you that your safety is assured. Know, however, that you're as safe as it's possible to be in this city right now."

"I ought to have guessed they already knew," Kisara murmured thoughtfully, drawing attention away from what was clearly Henry struggling with a mental breakdown. She held out a hand, palm up, and let lightning crackle between her fingers. The children gasped; Zelda and Rhett exchanged knowing looks. Henry didn't seem to have noticed. "The queen saw fit to see me born a human, so that she could influence this world directly. I am she; she is me."

"You're the Blue-Eyes White Dragon," Reiji said slowly, solemnly.

"I am," said Kisara.

"How long have you known?" Rhett asked.

"My power woke in me two years ago."

"When you left."

Kisara nodded. "I knew that I needed to find my champion. I knew that, whatever life had in store for me, whatever it intended for me, I would find it at his side. That was what the queen told me when her voice first echoed in my mind."

Seto retrieved his deck of Magic & Wizards cards from his pocket, flourished them like a casino dealer, and drew two more cards from the top of the pack to join the one he'd already taken up. He showed them to the children: three identical copies of the rarest card to have ever been in circulation in the history of Magic & Wizards.

The Blue-Eyes White Dragon.

Kisara cracked her knuckles. "I thought," she said, "that I ought to hide my true nature from you. I thought that it would only cause trouble for you all to know who, what, I am." Her raptors' gaze swept over her siblings, her parents. Mokuba, Seto. "I see now the futility of such a thing. I am no superhero. I do not hide behind a mask. I am a dragon. It is time for these pretenders to know who it is they harrow. My prince, will you stand with me?"

"Always," said Seto.

Kisara smiled, then nodded. "Vorse Raider," she said.

"My queen."

"You will protect my family. You will protect young Mokuba. That is your assignment."

Vorse Raider dropped to one knee and lowered his head. "Understood, my queen."

"Obelisk may be known as the mad god," Kisara said, "but I've a madness in me as well. I think it high time to unleash it. I tire of this nonsense, of this hubris. Come, my prince. Let us show the patrons of your park the sort of show they expect from a place bearing your name."

Seto grinned. "After you," he said, sweeping an arm toward the door.

They both left the staff-room, walking in lockstep with each other.

Thunder announced them, in the open sky, and set the gods to trembling.
