It was your usual morning in Summer Bay, the sun casting its early glow across the quiet streets. The waves crashed gently against the shore, and the distant chirps of birds provided a serene backdrop. Among the weathered beach houses, a young girl, Sienna Wilks, sat perched on her suitcase, her eyes glued to the horizon, as if searching for an answer the sea might provide. At 15, she'd seen more of the world's harshness than anyone should, her eyes holding a maturity beyond her years. Her auburn hair was pulled into a messy bun, and her skin was kissed by the sun from weeks spent outside, trying to escape the confines of her latest group home. The air had anticipation as she awaited the arrival of her new foster mother, Pippa Fletcher. Sienna had spent the last 5 years in and out of foster homes, hoping each time that this one would be the one to stick, the one where she'd finally find a family that truly cared. Her birth parents died in a car accident, leaving her alone and lost in the system, yearning for the love she had once known.
"You okay, Sienna?" Miss Molloy, the FACS (Family and Community Services) worker, gently placed a hand on her shoulder. Sienna looked up, her eyes wet with unshed tears. She nodded, trying to put on a brave face, though her insides felt like they were tied in a million knots.
"I just can't keep doing this, Miss Molloy." Sienna sobbed quietly as Pippa's car pulled into the driveway. The social worker offered a warm smile, tinged with a hint of sadness. "You're strong, Sienna. Stronger than you know."
When Pippa Fletcher got out of her car, Sienna noticed how warm and caring her smile was. She had a gentle air about her, something she hadn't felt in a very long time. Pippa walked towards her with open arms, her blonde hair bouncing slightly with each step. Sienna felt a strange sensation in her chest, one she hadn't felt since her parents were alive. Hope.
"Hi, you must be Sienna Wilks." Pippa said, her voice as soothing as the ocean's whisper. Sienna nodded again, unable to form words as she took in her new surroundings. Pippa's house was painted a soft shade of white, and was adorned with blooming flowers that matched the vibrant energy of the woman herself. The screen door creaked open, and Sienna found herself attracted to the old world charm of the place, like it was a warm embrace that had been waiting for her.
"So, who lives here?" Sienna asked.
"My other foster children," Pippa began. "There's Sophie Simpson, she's around your age, and a real firecracker. Then there's Steven Matheson, who's 17 and keeps everyone on their toes. Along with Carly Morris, who is turning 20 soon and is like the big sister here. And of course, my youngest, Christopher, he's just 2." She paused, her smile fading slightly. "And my adopted daughter, Sally, who is 11."
Sienna felt a flicker of something in her chest. The mention of a family, even if it was just for show, made her heart flutter. She had always longed for siblings, someone to share her pain and joy with. Sienna then thought to her last foster home in Cook Vale, where she had felt like nothing more than a burden. She took a deep breath and followed Pippa into the house, her eyes darting around, trying to memorise every detail.
"This is where you'll be sleeping." Pippa showed Sienna to her room, which was small but cozy with a single bed dressed in soft blue linen, a wooden chair by the window, and a small bookshelf filled with books that looked well-read and loved. The walls were adorned with seashells and posters of smiling dolphins, a stark contrast to the sterile walls of the group home. Sienna felt a strange sense of comfort wash over her as she placed her suitcase beside the bed.
"I can put a TV in here if you'd like, but we usually spend most of our time in the living room or outside," Pippa offered, noticing Sienna's gaze lingering on the bare wall opposite the bed.
"Yes, I could do with a TV to help me sleep," Sienna said, trying to sound nonchalant, but her eyes betrayed her excitement. She hadn't had one in her room since her parents. Pippa nodded and made a mental note to arrange it.
"I'll leave you to get settled." Pippa said, before smiling and leaving the room. Sienna took a moment to look around. For a brief instant, she allowed herself to imagine what it would be like to be part of this makeshift family. Sienna placed a photo frame with a picture when she was 7 with her birth parents on the bedside table. It was a reminder of a simpler time, when she was surrounded by love and care. She felt a pang of longing, but she knew she had to stay strong. After the death of her parents, Sienna was sent to live with an elderly woman in Taree who passed away after a year. After that, Sienna was sent to live with a family in Newcastle for a few months before their circumstances changed. She then moved to Kariong, and then to a group home in the city. The moves had become a blur of new faces and unfamiliar places, but she always hoped that the next one would be the one that stuck. Her last foster home was in Cook Vale, a place she liked to forget. Her foster parents were only taking kids in for the government money, and treated her poorly. The final straw came when she and a fellow foster child, Tracey Turner, were caught coming home from a party. Tracey was sent back to her grandmother, while Sienna was shipped to another group home temporarily, before ending up here in Summer Bay.
Once she finished unpacking, Sienna smiled to herself. It was the first genuine smile she cracked in weeks. The room felt like it could be a sanctuary, a place she could call her own.
