Nikki stood outside the biology classroom, her heart racing as she contemplated how to approach Brandon. The colourful chaos of students bustling around her felt like a distant hum, her mind consumed with swirling thoughts. She took a deep breath, trying to build the courage to speak, terrified of freezing up at the last moment. It was during this moment of deep reflection that she felt a presence behind her and spun around, startled.
"Hey, Nikki," Brandon said, a hint of warmth in his voice.
"YAAAARGH!!!" Nikki shrieked, her surprise evident as she turned to face him. She saw Brandon's eyes widen in surprise, clearly taken aback by her reaction. "Oh, hey Brandon! I didn't see you there."
"Sorry! I didn't mean to scare you," he confessed, a sheepish smile forming on his lips. "I just heard what happened to you yesterday, and I wanted to check if you're okay."
"Oh, I'm perfectly fine," Nikki replied, attempting to make light of her swirling thoughts. She let out a nervous laugh and fiddled with the hem of her shirt, her fingers twisting the fabric as she tried to calm her racing heart. "Well, uh, class is about to start. Should we head in?"
"Yeah," Brandon replied, his tone smoothing back to normalcy.
As they entered the dimly lit classroom, the scent of chalk and paper wrapped around them, they found seats next to each other, their proximity igniting a flutter of nerves within Nikki. As the teacher's voice droned on, blending into an indistinct murmur, Nikki found herself lost in a whirlwind of thought.
I really hope this conversation doesn't turn awkward, she mused, anxious about what she was about to say. Please let Chloe and Zoey be right about this. Her stomach twisted with anxiety. Oh gosh, I'm so nervous.
"NIKKI!"
Nikki jumped at the sound of her name, breaking her trance. "Yeah!?" she exclaimed with a startled gasp.
"I've called you three times! Pay attention, young lady," Miss Kinkaid reprimanded her voice firm yet kind.
"S-sorry, Miss Kinkaid," Nikki stammered, her cheeks burning in embarrassment as she forced herself to focus.
Finally, the bell rang, slicing through the monotony of the class and signalling the end of the school day. Nikki and Brandon filed out of the classroom, the air outside buzzing with the chatter of their classmates.
"Hey, about that conversation… can we go somewhere private?" Nikki suggested, her voice wavering slightly with uncertainty.
Brandon looked at her quizzically but nodded, "Yeah, where to?"
"Let's head to the back of the school. Is that okay?" She took a few steps backwards, her heart pounding.
"Yeah, why not," he replied, his brows furrowing in confusion but agreeing nonetheless.
They made their way to the secluded back of the school, where tall trees shielded them from curious eyes. The quiet surrounding them wrapped around them like a cocoon.
"So, what did you want to talk about?" Brandon asked, his tone turning serious, the warm sunlight dappling over their faces.
Nikki took a deep breath, summoning her courage. "It's about the charity event a few days ago, you know, when you kissed me?"
"Oh, that…" Brandon's face fell for a moment, his discomfort palpable. "Sorry if I made you mad, I—"
"No, I'm not mad," Nikki interrupted, her voice firmer now. "It's just… what are we, Brandon? Ever since that happened, it's been driving me crazy."
W-well," he replied, glancing away, his cheeks tinged with a delicate shade of pink. "I, um, did it because… I like you. I know it was wrong for me to do that without asking, but I did it anyway."
Nikki felt her heart leap at his confession, a thrill coursing through her veins. "Wait, you like me?"
"Yeah, I've liked you for a while now," he admitted, his gaze finally meeting hers.
A wave of disbelief washed over Nikki, her stomach knotting with excitement and disbelief, making her RCS (Roller Coaster Syndrome) kick in. Her cheeks turned crimson as she stammered, "Well, I like you too."
They stood in a moment of shared vulnerability, their eyes darting between each other and the ground, both feeling the weight of their mutual feelings.
"So… does this mean we're dating now?" Nikki asked awkwardly, her voice barely above a whisper.
"I… I guess so," Brandon replied, a shy smile creeping onto his lips, clearly just as embarrassed as she was.
Suddenly, the shrill ring of Brandon's phone pierced the air, breaking the serene moment they shared.
Brandon glanced at the screen, his expression shifting from relaxed contemplation to a hint of urgency. "Oh, it's Betty," he said, a note of concern creeping into his voice. "She needs me to rush over to Fuzzy Friends right away. I guess I'll talk to you tomorrow, okay?" Disappointment flickered across his face as if the abrupt end to their conversation had pulled him away from something meaningful.
In a spontaneous gesture of support, Nikki wrapped her arms around him, pulling him into a warm hug. "Alright then, see you tomorrow," she replied, trying to convey all the unspoken words of encouragement in that brief embrace.
Brandon was caught off guard by the sudden embrace, a wave of warmth washing over him. After a few moments of surprise, he melted into the hug, savouring the fleeting intimacy that lingered for just a few precious seconds. They shared heartfelt goodbyes, each word heavy with unspoken emotions, before parting ways.
As Nikki strolled home, the encounter played over and over in her mind like a favourite song on repeat. *Squee! I can't believe we're dating— we're actually dating!* she thought, her heart fluttering with excitement. *If this is a dream, someone pinch me! No, scratch that— I want to soak in this feeling a little longer. Oh, I can't WAIT to tell Chloe and Zoey about this! They're going to lose their minds!*
Her joyful reverie was abruptly interrupted when she caught sight of a gathering up ahead. A myriad of people crowded around, their expressions a mix of curiosity and concern, while police officers cordoned off the area with a bright "Keep Out" sign. Intrigued, Nikki leaned in and began to overhear two women whispering in animated tones.
"So that middle schooler was just walking home when she came down this street, and that's when she saw it," one woman said, her eyes wide with disbelief.
"Wow. Who could imagine THAT hanging from an antenna?" the other replied, shaking her head in astonishment.
"Yeah, I wanted to see it too," the first woman lamented, glancing around anxiously.
"Well, you got here too late. The police and fire department took it down just a moment ago," the second woman informed, her voice dropping to a hushed tone.
"I think it's terrifying. I can't believe a dead body showed up around here," the first woman said, her voice trembling.
Nikki's heart raced as her eyes widened in shock. *Did she just say a dead body?!* she thought, panic fluttering in her chest.
"Hey, everyone, there's nothing to see here. Go home now!" a stern detective barked, his authoritative voice cutting through the murmurs of the crowd.
Feeling a mix of dread and urgency, Nikki quickened her pace, eager to distance herself from whatever was unfolding. When she finally reached her home, she shut the door firmly behind her and locked it with a shaky hand. She headed upstairs to her room, the weight of what she had just heard settling heavily on her mind as she sought a quiet space to process the events of the day.
