Chapter 7: An Unexpected Day Off:
Steve Rogers, better known to the world as Captain America, had been handed an unusual gift that morning—a day off from his relentless duties at S.H.I.E.L.D. For a man defined by his dedication and commitment, such a respite felt almost foreign. But rather than spending the day in aimless pursuits, Steve decided to defy Nick Fury granting him down time, and accompany Chloe to the Triskelion. He knew the risks involved in his line of work, and their bond had grown strong enough for him to worry about her safety.
Dressed in his full Captain America uniform, Steve was a walking emblem of valor and responsibility. Chloe, still somewhat in awe of the towering figure, greeted him with a mixture of excitement and apprehension.
"Steve. You really didn't need to come today," Chloe said, her voice a blend of excitement and nervousness.
Steve's reply came in his characteristic firm yet reassuring tone. "I wanted to, Chloe. There's something important we need to cover today. Follow me."
As they walked through the corridors of the Triskelion, the whispers and stares they garnered were impossible to miss. Agents and staff alike found it hard to ignore Captain America's presence, especially when he seemed so focused on the young intern.
Arriving at the gymnasium, Steve's plan became clear. "Chloe, you need to be able to defend yourself. It's not just about being brave; it's about being prepared. Today, we're starting your self-defense training."
Chloe's eyes widened. "Training? With you? Wow, this is serious," she replied, a mix of fear and excitement in her voice.
Steve offered a faint smile. "Yes, it's serious. Now, go change into your workout gear. We start in an hour."
While Chloe got ready, Steve prepared the gym, setting up various elements they would use for the training session. Little did they know, watchful eyes were on them. Clint Barton, known as Hawkeye, and Natasha Romanoff, known as the Black Widow, observed from a distance.
"Who's the girl?" Clint muttered, looking through the gym's glass wall. "Who knew Cap had a thing for blondes."
"Someone important to Steve, clearly," Natasha replied, her gaze fixated on the pair. "Interesting. Steve doesn't usually take personal interest like this."
Ignoring the whispers, Steve focused on the task at hand. "Alright, Chloe. Let's start with the basics. We'd cover stances and movements first, and then move to more complex techniques," he instructed.
Chloe tried to mirror his stance but struggled. Steve patiently corrected her posture. "Keep your feet shoulder-width apart, bend your knees slightly. Balance and agility are your best friends."
As they moved through different holds and throws, Chloe slowly began to catch on. Her initial clumsiness gave way to a semblance of competence under Steve's watchful eyes.
Chloe attempted a strong grapple on the super soldier, but was easier said than done. Every time Chloe grabbed a hold of Steve, It seemed like her hand kept slipping off. In fact, Chloe scarily thought about how if this were a real life-outside of S.H.I.E.L.D. scenario, she'd be dead and gone.
Chloe had managed to make some small, but noticably Improvment.
"You're getting it. Now, let's talk about improvisation," Steve said, shifting their focus. "In a real fight, anything can become a weapon." He walked over to the corner of the gym and picked up his iconic shield. "This is more than just a shield; it's an extension of me. You need to learn how to use objects around you for defense."
Steve demonstrated a few throws, the shield gliding through the air with uncanny precision before returning to his grasp. Chloe stared, awed by the display of skill and control.
"Wow, Steve, you make it look so easy," Chloe remarked, wide-eyed.
He chuckled softly. "It's taken years of practice. Now, give it a try."
Feeling the weight of the shield in her hands, Chloe tried to emulate Steve's throw. Her first attempt was clumsy, the shield wobbling mid-air and falling short of the target.
"Don't worry, just focus on your grip and the release angle," Steve took the shield and easily threw it as effortlessly as it rebounded back towards him. "It's about angles and timing. Give it a try." Steve coached. "Try again."
With each attempt, Chloe's technique improved. Her throws became more controlled and accurate. She could see the approval in Steve's eyes.
"This is starting to make sense now," Chloe said, a note of triumph in her voice. "I think I'm getting the hang of it!"
From outside the gym, Clint and Natasha continued their quiet observation. Clint raised an eyebrow. "She's actually not bad. Looks like she's been trained by the best."
"Steve sees something in her. And given how cautious he is, that means something," Natasha replied thoughtfully.
A wind of challenge streaked across Chloe's face as she took on the task. Inspired by the heroism and poise Steve consistently exhibited, she practiced, faltered, and practiced again. Her diligence paid off, for in time, she managed to wield the shield with a respectable competence that earned Steve's approval.
"Not bad for a first-timer," Steve said with a smile. "You've got potential, Chloe. Just keep practicing. You did well, Chloe. Harness your untapped potential regularly, and you'll get even better," Steve said encouragingly. "I'm proud of you."
The words I'm Proud Of You raced through Chloe's mind. He. Said. Im. Proud. Of. You. Out of embarrassment, the girl quickly turned away to hide her blush. "Thank you, Steve." She quickly said before leaving the gym.
Watching from the shadows, Clint nudged Natasha. "She's not half bad," he remarked, a smirk playing on his lips. "Maybe If we had her, Loki would've been as good as dead," Clint added, chuckling at his own joke.
Natasha nodded, her calculating eyes fixated on the girl. "Interesting," she murmured, plotting her next move.
Post-several long and grueling hours of training, an exhausted yet exhilarated Chloe headed towards the lockers, only to find herself face-to-face with Natasha Romanoff. The agent's presence bent the very air around them, a compelling mix of danger and allure. Chloe's pulse quickened in both apprehension and awe.
"You've got grit," Natasha observed, her voice smooth but penetrating. "Steve doesn't take up a task lightly. If he's training you, he sees potential. But remember, even he has his weaknesses."
Chloe found herself leaning in, intrigued by the insight that Natasha could offer. "Weaknesses?" she asked, her voice almost a whisper.
"Steve's a phenomenal soldier, but as great as he is, he's still human. His combat style relies heavily on strength and resilience. Learn to outmaneuver him, focus on agility and technique. It might come in handy someday," Natasha said with a knowing smile. "Don't tell Rogers I told you this, but one big weakness of his is the moment he stops attacking, regardless of how long that takes, It leaves him wide open, and if the attack connects it puts a huge knife into his momentum."
Chloe absorbed the advice, storing it in the recesses of her mind. Natasha's cryptic yet valuable guidance felt like an unsanctioned blessing. "Thank you," Chloe managed, her voice filled with genuine appreciation.
Natasha's lips curved in a rare, genuine smile. "Good, Be safe. And always be prepared," she said before turning on her heel and exiting the room, leaving Chloe to contemplate the aura of dangerous grace that seemed to cloak the renowned assassin, agent and Avenger.
As Natasha walked away, Chloe felt a mix of admiration and a slight chill. Natasha's dangerous aura was unmistakable, but it came with an undercurrent of support.
Returning home from the Triskelion, Chloe felt the day's efforts in her muscles. Stripping off her work clothes, she stepped into the shower, letting the warm water soothe her. Her mind was a whirl of thoughts—training with Steve, the wisdom imparted by Natasha. It was a heady mix of experiences that felt almost dreamlike.
Later, dressed in her comfortable pajamas, Chloe settled onto her bed and initiated a video chat with her best friends, Emilia and Lacy. Their faces lit up the screen, bright and expectant.
"Guys, you won't believe the day I had," Chloe began, her voice bubbling with excitement.
"Bitch, you have to to us everything!" Emilia practically shouted, her eyes wide with curiosity. "Did you meet any Avengers today?"
"More than meet," Chloe said with a grin. "I trained with Steve. Like, actual training. And Natasha Romanoff gave me advice on combat."
The collective gasp from Emilia and Lacy was instantaneous. Emilia, always the more exuberant of the trio, nearly jumped out of her seat. "You trained with Captain America and got tips from Black Widow? Chloe, that's insane!"
Lacy, the pragmatic one, leaned in closer to her screen, her eyes narrowing with interest. "Seriously, Chloe? How did that even happen?"
Chloe beamed, feeling the intensity of the day's experiences all over again. "Steve decided I need to learn self-defense, so he took me to the gym and trained me himself. And Natasha? She just showed up, watched for a bit, then gave me pointers. It was like something out of a movie."
Emilia's eyes sparkled. "That's beyond amazing! What did Natasha say? Did she teach you any cool moves?"
"Well, she told me that Steve relies heavily on his strength and resilience, and is weaker the moment he stops and momentarily pauses in a fight. She said if I ever need to outmaneuver someone like him, I should focus on being quicker and smarter. It's all about agility, not just brute force," Chloe explained.
"Wow, that's deep," Lacy commented, a thoughtful look on her face. "Makes sense, though. You can't just overpower everyone."
"And get this," Chloe continued, her excitement bursting forth, "I actually trained with Steve's shield! It was terrifying at first, but I got better with each throw."
Emilia practically screamed with delight. "Steve's shield? Are you serious? Oh my God, Chloe, you're living the dream!"
Lacy chuckled, shaking her head. "I can't believe how much your life has changed. Just a few months ago, you were an intern, and now look at you!"
Their conversation flowed naturally from one topic to another. The trio's bond was unbreakable, their exchanges filled with mutual support and excitement.
"Oh! You know what? Speaking of Avengers," Emilia began, leaning closer to her screen, "I've been thinking... who do you think is the most handsome among them? I mean, they're all kind of incredible, right?"
Chloe and Lacy exchanged a look, their cheeks flushing. "Emilia, do we really have to go there?" Chloe asked, a hint of embarrassment in her voice.
"Yes, we do!" Emilia insisted, her tone playful. "Come on, admit it. It's a fun topic. So? Steve, Thor, or Tony? Personally, I'm torn between Steve and Thor. Tony's charisma is off the charts, but Steve's got that all-American hero vibe, and Thor's... well, he's a literal god!"
Lacy laughed, throwing her hands up in playful resignation. "Wouldn't it be easier to just admire all of them? I mean, they're the Avengers. Each one is impressive in his own right."
Chloe, though slightly embarrassed, couldn't ignore the heat in her cheeks. "I suppose meeting them in person adds another layer to it. They're all extraordinary in their own ways, but it's their humanity, their ability to persevere despite their flaws, that makes them so remarkable."
Emilia's face lit up even more. "And that right there is why you fit in, Chloe. You see beyond the surface, and that's what makes you special."
Lacy nodded in agreement, her gaze softening. "You've always had a knack for understanding people, Chloe. It's no wonder Steve is so keen on training you."
"Thanks, guys," Chloe replied, feeling a warm flush of gratitude. "But seriously, the way Steve trains, it's intense. You have to see it to believe it."
"So, tell us more," Emilia prodded eagerly. "What was it like handling the shield?"
Chloe took a deep breath, recalling the weight and feel of the iconic shield in her hands. "At first, it was heavy and felt completely alien. I didn't think I'd ever be able to throw it without it wobbling all over the place. But Steve was so patient. He showed me the right grip and the perfect release angle. With each throw, it got a bit easier."
"Did you hit any targets?" Lacy asked, her eyes gleaming with curiosity.
"By the end of the session, I was actually hitting pretty close to the targets. I can't say I'm ready to take on any bad guys, or Avengers level threats," Said Chloe with humor and sarcasm, "but it was a good start," Chloe admitted with a triumphant smile.
Emilia clapped her hands in excitement. "This is so cool, Chloe! I'm so jealous but so proud of you at the same time!"
Lacy leaned back in her chair, a contemplative look on her face. "You know, this kind of training could be invaluable. It's not just about fighting—it's about confidence and knowing you can take care of yourself."
Chloe nodded, feeling the truth of Lacy's words. "That's exactly what Steve said. He wants me to be prepared for anything, to be able to defend myself if it ever comes to that."
Emilia sighed dreamily. "I still can't get over the fact that you're actually training with Captain America. You're basically an honorary Avenger now!"
Chloe laughed. "Let's not get ahead of ourselves. I've got a long way to go. But it's definitely a step in the right direction. And lets just say The Avengers aren't in that direction."
Their conversation meandered through various topics, each one flowing naturally into the next. They discussed the events of the day, the latest news at S.H.I.E.L.D., and their own personal lives. It was a mix of serious discussions and light-hearted banter, the kind of conversation only true friends could have.
"Speaking of Avengers," Emilia circled back, a mischievous glint in her eye, "do you think Steve's noticed how awesome, but more importantly, how sexy you are?"
Chloe blushed, waving off the suggestion. "Emilia, stop it. He's just being a good mentor and friend."
Lacy raised an eyebrow. "Still, it's not like he does this for everyone. He sees something in you, Chloe."
Chloe felt her cheeks flush even more. "You guys are reading too much into this. He's just looking out for me because he knows the risks of our work environment. And how dangerous anything can be outside of it"
Emilia sighed dramatically. "Fine, fine. I'll drop it for now. But you have to admit, it's kind of amazing to have Captain America as your personal trainer."
Chloe couldn't help but chuckle. "Yeah, it is pretty amazing. Every time I think about it, it kind of feels like a dream."
They moved on from teasing Chloe about Steve to sharing more mundane details of their lives. Emilia talked about her day at the Smithsonian, where she was ironically enough being the head of tours for the Captain America exhibit. Lacy, the veteran and seasoned artist, mentioned her latest project, a series of paintings inspired by the New York skyline.
"So, Chloe," Lacy began after some time, "now that you've had this incredible training session, what's next for you at S.H.I.E.L.D.?"
"Well," Chloe started, reflecting on her future at S.H.I.E.L.D., "I guess I'll just continue to work hard and learn as much as I can. Steve's training is already boosting my self confidence. Who knows where it could lead? Maybe a promotion in my field of study."
Emilia nodded enthusiastically. "I'm so excited for you, Chloe. The sky's the limit!"
As the conversation drifted into the evening, the topics became more relaxed. They reminisced about old times, laughed over shared memories, and supported each other through personal trials and triumphs.
Lacy suddenly looked thoughtful. "Do you ever think about the Battle of New York? What would it have been like to be there?"
Chloe shivered slightly at the thought. "I try not to dwell on it, but yeah, sometimes I do. The chaos, the fighting... it must've been terrifying. But also, to see the Avengers in action, to see them save the day, that must've been incredible too."
Emilia chimed in, her voice animated. "I've read so much about it. The teamwork, the heroism... it's inspiring. That's part of why I love studying psychology and working at the Smithsonian. Understanding the minds of people who can perform such extraordinary acts under pressure. And providing historical accuracy as well. In fact, rumor has it that Tony Stark and his stupid Damage Control organization may even donate a Chitauri gun that Steve had during the Battle Of New York alongside some weird energy and blade thing Black Widow used as well. New York is the land of weirdness, but thats why we love it."
"I get chills just thinking about it," Lacy said softly. "The courage it must take to face something like that head-on."
Their conversation naturally circled back to the topic of admiration and heroism. Emilia, never one to shy away from a fun debate, brought up the topic of the most handsome Avenger again.
"Alright, Chloe, Lacy, I know we touched on this earlier," Emilia said, a wicked grin spreading across her face, "but I seriously need your take. Who's the most handsome Avenger?"
Chloe chuckled, shaking her head in mock exasperation. "Emilia, you're relentless. Okay, if I had to choose... Steve's got that classic, clean-cut look, and then there's Thor with his god-like presence. But Tony's charisma and intellect are really appealing too. It's a tough call."
Lacy chimed in, laughing. "Tony does have that bad-boy genius vibe that's hard to resist. And Thor, well, he's a god. But Steve's got this pure, noble aura about him."
Emilia clasped her hands together, looking victorious. "Exactly! It's impossible to choose just one, isn't it? They're all incredible in their own ways. I mean, where else would you find such a collection of damn good looking superheroes with superpowers?"
Chloe smiled, feeling a rush of affection for her friends. "You know, it's not just about their looks or their powers. It's who they are underneath it all—their courage, their humanity. That's what makes them truly remarkable."
Lacy nodded in agreement. "Absolutely. They each have their own set of values and strengths. And they use their gifts not for personal gain, but to help others. That's what makes them heroes."
Their conversation meandered from the more serious discussions back to their usual light-hearted banter. Emilia shared her theory about how Thor's hair must have its own regimented care routine, given how perfect it always looked.
"I mean, come on," Emilia said, feigning exasperation. "No one just wakes up looking like that. He probably has some ancient Asgardian conditioner or something. I'm absolutely jealous of that damn astrophysicist Thor is all puppy dog over. Just imagine the thousand year long experience of sex Thor has."
Chloe laughed heartily, picturing the God of Thunder with a shelf full of exotic hair products. "I wouldn't be surprised. I heard Asgardians have all sorts of advanced technologies, so why not impeccable hair care?"
Lacy joined in, her laughter infectious. "Can you imagine Tony in his lab, creating a special line of Stark Industries grooming products just for Thor?"
Emilia grinned. "Oh, absolutely! It'd be like, 'Introducing Thor's Thunder Shampoo, now with lightning extract for that perfect godly shine!'"
Chloe nearly doubled over with laughter. "This is gold. Someone needs to pitch this idea to Tony. I'm sure he'd get a kick out of it."
As night fell, the three friends delved deeper into more personal stories, discussing their favorite childhood memories and the dreams they had for the future. The glow of their screens illuminated their faces, bringing a sense of togetherness despite the physical distance.
"Do you ever wonder what it would be like to be an Avenger yourself?" Lacy asked suddenly, her voice filled with wistful longing.
Chloe thought for a moment before responding. "It's a daunting thought. The responsibility, the dangers... but also the incredible impact you could have. To really make a difference, save lives, protect the world. It's awe-inspiring."
Emilia sighed softly, her expression one of contemplation. "I think I'd be scared out of my wits, but the idea of doing something so meaningful, of being part of something that important... it's hard not to dream about it."
Lacy smiled gently. "I think each of us, in our own ways, has a bit of that heroism inside us. It doesn't have to be in grand gestures or epic battles. Sometimes, it's the little things we do for each other every day that matter most."
Chloe nodded, feeling the truth of Lacy's words. "We all have the power to make a difference. Even small acts of kindness, support, and understanding can have a huge impact."
The conversation continued well into the night, the trio's laughter interspersed with moments of deep reflection. It was a tapestry of their shared lives, woven with threads of humor, admiration, and an unshakeable bond.
"I feel so grateful to have you guys," Chloe said softly, her voice tinged with emotion. "Your support means everything to me."
Emilia's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "We're a team, Chloe. Just like the Avengers, we've got each other's backs through thick and thin."
Lacy echoed the sentiment. "Always. We might not have superpowers or shields, but we have each other. And that's more powerful than anything else."
As dawn began to break outside Chloe's window, the conversation stayed warm and comforting. Their exhaustion showed, but they were reluctant to end the call. Time seemed irrelevant when they were together, even virtually.
"Alright, before we call it a night," Emilia started, a touch of her usual playful and seductive energy coming back, "one last question. If you had to choose an Avenger to go on a date with, who would it be?"
Chloe groaned and laughed simultaneously. "Emilia, you don't let up, do you?"
"Nope, hurry up and choose bitch." Emilia playfully rushed.
"Okay, Okay, if I really had to choose... probably Steve."
Emilia giggled much to Chloe's annoyance. "I saw that shit coming from a mile away."
Chloe rolled her eyes at that comment. "He's just so... genuinely good. What about you, Lacy?"
Lacy smiled, thinking it over. "My husband will always be the one for me, but if I had to choose, It'd beTony, for sure. The conversation would be fascinating and guaranteed entertaining, and I bet he knows all the best places to go being one of the wealthiest guys on the planet."
Emilia wiggled her eyebrows. "Thor, all the way. He's fun, spontaneous, and come on, who wouldn't want to date a literal god?"
Chloe laughed, feeling lighter and more connected to her friends than ever. "Well, when you put it that way, I guess each choice has its perks."
Eventually, the yawns became too frequent to ignore. Chloe knew she needed to get some rest, especially after such an eventful day. "Alright, guys, this has been amazing, but I think I need to crash. Big day tomorrow."
Emilia nodded, stifling a yawn. "Yeah, me too. This was exactly what I needed, though. Love you bitches." Emilia flirtatiously and playfully gave to virtual kisses to Chloe and Lacy, something she had done to them since they were kids growing up in New York City.
"Love you too," Lacy chimed in, her voice soft but filled with warmth.
"Goodnight!" Chloe said, feeling a wave of peace wash over her, followed by her blowing kisses at her two childhood girlfriends.
The call ended, and Chloe lay back on her pillow, a smile playing on her lips. She felt incredibly fortunate to have such wonderful friends, and the day's experiences were already becoming cherished memories.
In her dreams, she continued her training with Steve, the lessons blending seamlessly with moments of laughter and friendship. She felt stronger, more prepared, and endlessly grateful for the people who supported her in ways big and small. With their unwavering encouragement, she knew she could face anything the future had in store. Including any future attackers.
A/N's: And that puts a wrap on Chapter 7. I was a really big fan of how I wrote this chapter, everything just fell into place perfectly for me. And I told you alm the Avengers would make their eventual appearances, starting with Clint and Natasha! I liked how I did Chloe and Natasha's meeting, simple, brief and alluring. They will definitely meet again soon, just watch. I also like how I did the training bit with Steve, followed by the video conferencing call between Chloe, Emilia and Lacy. Chapter 8 will definitely be an interesting one so stay tuned for that.
A bit of a Timeline update for the story, It is still September, 2013. And based upon what I have scripted for the next two chapters, the canon date for this Chapter is September 10, 2013.
