A taxi was on it's way to Randy Bomba's neighborhood and home. Inside it was a male cabdriver and Randy's daughter, MK who was now seventeen.
MK had inherited a mix of physical traits from both her parents. She had her father's vibrant red hair, dark green eyes, and a sprinkling of freckles. From her mom she got her body type and beauty. MK's hair was styled in a sleek ponytail, accentuated by framed bangs that frame her face. She wore a vibrant hot pink cordovan hoodie, paired with a trendy grey striped t-shirt, a chic black miniskirt, black capri leggings, brown combat boots, and six earnings on her ears.
MK looked out the window at the scenery as she thought about her current situation, her past, and her future. Her mom was gone and she was going to live with her father for a while, which she had mixed feelings about. Back, when she was little Randy's obsession with the tiny folk that he believed lived in the forest had sprouted. At first it had been fairly harmless and no big deal. Randy had taken multiple trips into the forest for some long periods of time and though it had put a bit of a strain on Randy's marriage and family life it hadn't been bad. It only got bad when he tried to present his findings and evidence to the board of directors at the university and then to the public, which didn't go well since no believed him and that in turn affected both MK and her mother's lives. People began to make fun of Randy and his family and close friends began to distance themselves from MK and her mother not wanting to associated with the family of a crazy man who believed in tiny people who lived in the forest. It had been especially been tough for MK as a kid. Susan had tried to get Randy to stop with his research and hunt for the tiny people of the forest, but he refused insisting they were real.
After months of this, Susan who had been a supportive wife, finally had enough of it all and divorced Randy and took MK with her. The two of them started over in another part of the country taking on Susan's maiden name and for a good while things had been good. Randy made calls to Susan and sent money to both her and MK and though they never got back together, they repaired their relationship a little. MK didn't really want to have anything to do with her father even if his obsession and hunt for the tiny people had died down and he focused on other parts of nature and maintaining a job and income. Then Susan got cancer and died soon after, but before that she had asked Randy to look after MK and for MK to try and work things out with Randy. MK said she would try.
In the present the taxi finally reached Randy's home. MK looked at the family home to see that the yard was well tended to and the house looked the same, though it could use a fresh coat of pain. She paid the driver, got her bags, and headed up to the house and knocked. There was the sound of a dog barking and someone walking up to the door. The door opened and Randy appeared before MK with a smile on his face.
"Margaret Katherine, oh I'm so happy to see you!" Said Randy with glee.
"Hey...dad. Good to see you and I like going by MK." Said MK.
"Of course. Of course. Here let me help take your bags." Said Randy helping with the bags.
They entered the house and Ozzi came scampering up.
"Ozzi?" Said MK with both surprise and joy as she squatted down and petted the old three legged dog.
"Yep Ozzi is still alive and kicking. I think that's to the organic food I make and give him along with all the love and care." Said Randy.
MK smiled as she gave Ozzi a good rubbing and the dog happily licked her face. After that Randy lead MK up to her room.
"I got you a new bed and cleaned the place up a bit. It's mostly the same, but you can change whatever you want." Said Randy setting the bag down on the floor.
MK looked around at the room as it brought back memories of happier times, when her parents were together.
"So...how are you doing now MK?" Asked Randy.
"I'm...doing ok. Working my way though most of the seven stages of grief. Just...mostly getting over depression and I think I'm almost ready for the testing stage." Said MK.
"That's great! And I want you to know, I'm here for you with whatever you need. I also want you to know I'm sorry, for how that research of mine affected both you and your mother. I was being very selfish and not thinking how my crusade affected both you and your mother." Said Randy being sincere.
"Um...thanks dad. I appreciate that." Said MK.
"Now I'll give you a little space to unpack your things and settle in. Call if you need anything. I might take a trek into the woods later to check on the local wildlife and you can join me if you wish." Said Randy before he left the room.
MK began to unpack her things, thinking that being with her father wasn't going to be so bad.
Elsewhere a tiny being was making it's way through the woods. The being was a two inch tall humanoid that looked fairly like a human man dressed in green and white leaf and stick armor that looked like a cross between a knight of England and a samurai. He was one of the tiny humanoids that lived in the forest that Randy had been searching for. The tiny being was known as a Leafman and he was a guardian and protector of the forest. His name was Ronin and he was the general of the Leafman. Ronin made his way to some rocks leaning against each other andwent between them to a hole in the ground. He went down the hole and was underground, where he saw a network of tunnels. Ants we're going about digging and expanding the tunnels and though Ronin was two inches tall he was fairly large compared to the ants who all stood up to about two to three millimeters. Ronin removed his helmet to reveal he had grey hair and blue eyes and tucked the helmet under his arm.
Ronin moved through the tunnels greeting the ants as he went. He made his way into a chamber, where ants were sorting through the various minerals. Ronin saw one ant that was carrying a staff with a glowing green rock at the end of it and had a long head that resembled a pointed hat. This ant was Zoc the ant wizard and a hi ranked member of the ant colony that Randy had looked at earlier that day.
"Good day Zoc." Greeted Ronin with a bow.
"Good day General Ronin." Said Zoc returning the bow.
"How goes things in the underground and your parts of the forest?" Asked Ronin.
"All is good the tunnels are expanding, all the roots of the plants are healthy and being well tended to, and we've collected a good assortment of minerals." Said Zoc.
"No sightings of any Boggans?" Asked Ronin.
"None. Has there been any movement in your areas?" Said Zoc.
"A few bold moves from the Boggans to expand their territory. I was concerned for you and your people so I came to check on." Said Ronin.
"Well thank you for your concern, but everything is fine down here. Praise the Mother for that." Said Zoc.
"Well good to hear." Said Ronin.
"How is my master, Nim Galuu?" Asked Zoc.
"He is doing well collecting knowledge." Said Ronin.
"That is so like him." Said Zoc with a smile.
"Well I must go, give my best to your Queen." Said Ronin.
"And give my best to Queen Tara." Said Zoc.
Ronin left the underground and headed back to his home of Moonhaven where the Leafman and other tiny people and creatures of the forest called home.
To be continued.
