The golden rays of the sun illuminated Hugo's opulent room. It was yet another peaceful morning in the palace of Albingoria. But today was different; in fact, it was special. Today was Hugo's 13th birthday, and he became an official teenager.
"Rise and shine, sweetie." Queen Charlotte cooed as she entered Hugo's bedroom, nudging him to wake up. Hugo had forgotten his birthday for the first time, and the king and queen took advantage of it to make his birthday even more special by creating new plans. Usually, Hugo would sneak into the kitchens to see which cake was being made for his birthday or eavesdrop on his parents' bedroom to listen to the birthday plans.
"Just five more minutes, mum," Hugo said as he turned to the other side, shielding himself with the blanket from the light shining through his window.
"Come on, it's almost half past eight." Queen Charlotte coaxed.
"Fine," Hugo replied as he sat upright on his bed, eyes still shut.
"I'll let you get ready then. I'll inform Frederick to bring in your outfit for today," Queen Charlotte said as she left his bedroom. Hugo didn't even question his mother as to why Frederick was bringing new clothes. He started thinking about it when she left the room. Then, suddenly, he realized that today was his birthday.
"Yay, wohoo!" Hugo exclaimed as he jumped from his bed, unable to contain his joy.
'How, how could I have forgotten my very own birthday? I'm an official teenager! Eeek! I can't wait for my birthday party!'Hugo thought to himself as he entered the restroom to freshen up.
As soon as Hugo came out of the restroom, he saw Frederick enter, bringing glamorous new clothes just itching to be worn. "Happy Birthday, Prince Hugo," Frederick said with a bow and placed his birthday robes on his bed.
"Thanks, Frederick," Hugo replied.
Frederick left the room, and Hugo grabbed the garments from his bed and rushed to the changing room. He stood in front of the ornate mirror, fully dressed and admiring his reflection. His ebony black suit and white silk shirt made him look manly. His jet black hair was swept to the side. He looked regal.
As Hugo descended the stairs, he saw all the servants across the ballroom, making arrangements and decorating the room where his birthday party would be held. All of them wished him Happy Birthday when they noticed him.
He entered the dining room and found his parents already seated. They caught sight of him and said, "Happy birthday, Hugo!" and King Garrick beckoned him to sit next to him.
"My baby boy has grown up so fast." Queen Charlotte remarked as she wiped her tears.
"You look charming, young man," King Garrick said. Hugo blushed at the compliment.
"Thanks, Mum and Dad. So, what exciting gifts have you bought for me?" Hugo said as he quickly took the seat next to his father and waited for their answer.
"We don't want to ruin the surprise now, do we?" King Garrick replied as he ate his muffin.
"Ah... right. It's alright, then." Hugo replied as he took a bite of the scrumptious cranberry muffin.
"By the way, Hugo, Sofia sent you a letter at midnight exact. I'd asked Frederick to give it to you after breakfast. She remembers your birthday better than you," said Queen Charlotte.
She loved Sofia because of her charm and elegance. She was also very intelligent. The queen had personally asked Hugo a few years ago to befriend her because she thought she was 'a beauty with brain.' She is, ofcourse, no one can deny that. But things had taken a different turn when Sofia had decided to join the Flying Derby. He denied the fact that princesses could also take part in it, so he disliked Sofia on their first meet itself. But Sofia had reformed him from being a jerk to a kind person and Hugo liked her for that. From that day on, Hugo and Sofia had become best friends.
"Oh ok then, I'll read it after breakfast." replied Hugo as he continued eating his muffin. He was very excited for Sofia to come over to his birthday party.
After breakfast, Hugo opened the letter enclosed in the envelope and started reading it.
Sofia's letter:
Dear Hugo,
Happy 13th birthday! You are a teenager! Can you believe it? Anyways, I personally asked Baileywick to send this letter to you at exactly midnight.
From the moment we became friends, I knew I'd found someone special- someone who matches my energy, and is always by my side. On your special day, i just want to remind you how much you mean to me. You are kind, sarcastic (No one can doubt that), hilarious, intelligent and most importantly, understanding. May this year bring all the happiness you deserve. And remember, I'm your best friend. You're stuck with me forever ;
Don't worry, I know what you're thinking, I do have a birthday present for you. Can't wait to see you in your birthday party.
Yours truly,
Sofia
Hugo had a huge grin on his face after reading the letter. He felt very grateful to have Sofia as her best friend. Now all he had to do was to wait for his friends to come to his birthday party. His parents were going to unveil his present in front of everyone. He just couldn't wait.
(Thanks for reading, folks! What do you think Hugo will get for his birthday? And especially, what will Sofia give him? Comment your guesses below!)
