Chapter 10
They arrived at an old abandoned farmhouse that was in ruins. It looked like it hadn't been lived in for quite some time.
"We'll camp here for the night. Fili, Kili, look after the ponies. Make sure you stay with them." Thorin ordered his nephews.
Gandalf looked at the home with furrowed brows. "A farmer and his family used to live here."
Tony looked over in worry. She wouldn't admit to herself that it felt off and she hated it when her feelings were right. She hoped that her feelings that something was wrong weren't true.
"Oin, Gloin."
"Aye?" Gloin questioned looking at his king.
"Get a fire going."
"Right, you are."
Gandalf turned his attention to Thorin. He wasn't about to have something happen to the company not being that far into their journey. "I think it would be wiser to move on. We could make for the Hidden Valley."
"I have told you already, I will not go near that place."
"Why not? The elves could help us. We could get food, rest, advice."
"I do not need their advice." Thorin hissed out anger seeping into his voice. He would not allow them to go near Rivendell.
Tony raised her brow in worry. She was confused about why Thorin held such hate towards elves. It didn't make sense why he would be hostile towards Rivendell elves when they had nothing to do with the issue of why they didn't have help to the Lonely Mountain.
"We have a map that we cannot read. Lord Elrond could help us." Gandalf said hoping that he would be able to get Thorin to agree to go to Rivendell to talk to Lord Elrond so they could get the help that they needed. The map needed to be read and them being here wasn't helping them any. It was just making a deeper problem for them.
"Help? A dragon attacks Erebor, what help came from the Elves? Orcs plunder Moria and desecrate our sacred halls, the Elves look on and do nothing. You ask me to seek out the very people who betrayed my grandfather and betrayed my father." Thorin said the anger simmered under his skin. He wasn't about to have Gandalf bring them to such a place. He wouldn't allow it. No matter if these elves didn't have anything to do with what had happened in the past. It was something that he couldn't easily turn a blind eye to.
"You are neither of them. I did not give you that map and key for you to hold on to the past."
"I did not know that they were yours to keep."
Gandalf stomped off angrily leaving the company in the wooded area.
"Everything alright? Gandalf, where are you going?" Bilbo asked confused.
"To seek the company of the only one around here who's got any sense."
"Who's that?"
"Myself, Mr. Baggins! I've had enough of dwarves for one day."
"Come on, Bombur, we're hungry," Thorin told Bombur.
"Is he coming back?" Bilbo asked rather concerned. He had never seen Gandalf get so irritated. It worried him that Gandalf wouldn't come back in time.
Balin looked at Bilbo unsure.
Tony took a breath. "Maybe he will be back. Everyone needs a moment to calm down." She said softly hoping that she was right. She looked nervously over at Thorin hoping that this wasn't going to be a mistake of staying here. A lot of things could happen at night. She looked back at the broken-down house with furrowed brows. "Thorin." She said softly coming up towards him.
Thorin turned his attention to Tony who had a worried gaze on her face. "What is it?"
"Are you certain that it is safe to stay here? That house… it's burned and run down… something bad happened here."
"Probably long ago," Thorin said with a wave of his hand. He could understand that Tony was feeling a bit off with the whole thing. She was new to this whole traveling and camping in less-than-ideal areas. "Nothing to worry about."
Tony took a breath knowing that this was probably something that she wouldn't need to worry about. She just hoped that there wouldn't be issues with them staying there. With Gandalf away who knows what type of trouble that they would get into? It made her worry about what could happen if they weren't careful. Something wasn't sitting right with her that was for sure and she was afraid to find out what it could be.
