Chapter 31: Youngblood's "Friend" Klarion
"Superboy?... Superboy!? Can you hear me!?" Miss Martian tried in vain to reestablish a connection to the boy of steel.
The bio-ship fully came back online just as they started losing momentum. Miss Martian was quick to right before setting it to autopilot. "Where did they take Superboy?"
Robin glared out the window where the portal had just been. It looked a lot like the portal the Fenton's had in their basement. "We need to go to Fenton Works. That portal was a lot like the one we saw in their videos."
Artemis glanced at Wally for a brief moment. "Are we sure it will work? No one's checked on it in three years, it could be dangerous."
"When has something dangerous stopped us before?"
"You've got me there. Miss M how far away are we from Amity Park?"
"About another hour or so. It would be sooner if she wasn't still recovering."
"Well then let's go get Superboy back!" Everyone cheered as Miss M got back on the controls and urged the bioship to fly faster.
The team got to Amity Park faster than they thought they would. They flew over the town searching for the Fenton Works building but it was harder than they thought.
The bioship was nearing a brick building when Zatanna told them to stop. "Robin can you pull up a picture of the Fenton Works building and aim the projection at that window?" She pointed at the window closest to Artemis.
He did just that. "They line up perfectly. So then why does the building look so different from the picture? Its only from three years ago."
"Miss M can you take us a little closer? I can sense some kind of illusion magic." The bioship got closer to the brick building. "Whoever put this up didn't want certain outsiders to get in." They all had a good idea of who the outsiders were. "We should land in the backyard and try to find a way in."
The teens all gathered around the back door. Kid Flash swatted at a huge spider that tried to crawl onto his shoulder from the tall grass. "Can someone open the door before more than just bugs show up."
"Calm down Kid Mouth. A couple bugs never hurt anyone. Robin can you pick the lock?"
"Sure, let me make sure its not already unlocked first."
"Like someone would be stupid enough to-" Kid Flash gapped as his best friend simply opened the back door and walked inside. Everyone walked past him and into the abandoned house. He finally snapped out of it when the same spider from before climbed onto his other shoulder. "Don't leave me out here!"
The inside of Fenton Works looked even more abandoned then the outside. A thick layer of dust covered every surface. "Someone's been through here recently." Robin was in the living room examining the footprints made in the dust leading back to the kitchen before stopping. He pressed a button on his mask and looked around the room. "There's a hidden elevator in the kitchen leading to something that's currently missing. There are two more elevators leading to it located in the master bedroom and a door on the roof." He looked down. "The portal's located in the basement."
Aqualad thought for a moment. "The power to this place was most likely turned off awhile ago. We should still make sure if its true considering the footprints. If the building isn't connected to the rest of the city then this place runs on its own power source and we should search for that as well."
Robin looked down. "The portal's in the basement. Who should go down and investigate while the others search the rest of the house?"
"You, Artemis and Zatanna should search the basement. The rest of us will search for the rest of the house."
The teens nodded at the plan and split into their respective groups. Kid Flash was getting ready to start running when Aqualad stopped him. "KF if you use your super speed you'll kick up lots of dust. Try getting rid of it first."
The speedster nodded and used his arms to vacuum up the dust in the room before heading upstairs and doing the same. "I've only gotten rid of the dust but the rooms I think belonged to Danny and his sister's rooms had no dust in them, like, at all."
"Strange, I guess we'll look in there first. Let us know what you find in the basement, Robin."
"Got it."
Miss Martian made it to the second floor first. The boys would most likely search Danny's room first so she decided to go into his sister's room first. The inside looked like a typical girl's room that was starting the transition between kid and teen. Upon closer inspection she noticed most of the room was dedicated to science. She picked up a teddy bear with crazy hair and a lab coat. "How adorable."
Miss M took another glance around the room to see if anything stuck out. Her eye caught the half closed closet door with something sticking out. A box of video tapes was lying on the ground. "I wonder if these could be considered useful." She placed the bear inside the box and levitated behind her.
Kid Flash sped to different parts of the room, looking at random objects. Aqualad was taking a more careful approach. He actually walked around the room and studied it as a whole. "There's a lot of space themed stuff in here. Do you think Danny wanted to become an astronaut when he was older?"
"Maybe, hey check this out. This looks a lot like Robin's uniform doesn't it?" Kid Flash held up a red, yellow and green leotard. "There's a couple other things under the bed too." The speedster proceeded to pull out a couple ordinary looking objects with the Fenton logo on it, a rolled up poster and a broken picture frame. "I wonder what this is?"
"We can find out later, we should meet up with Miss M and check the master bedroom for anything."
Robin whistled as he Zatanna and Artemis reached the basement of Fenton Works. "This place is way bigger than I first thought. KF is going to be mad he didn't get to see this lab."
"He'll get over it. Remember why we're here. Hopefully the portal still works."
"They have an entire weapons vault! Most of these look like ordinary objects!" Zatanna fawned over a tube of lipstick that shot out a laser and what looked like a hoverboard.
"I think I found the on switch." Artemis pressed a button near the semi open doors. Electricity crackled and the hole in the wall started creating a swirling green vortex before disappearing and everything shut down. "So much for this place running on any kind of power source."
Robin was just about to take a closer look into the mess of wires and panels when his communicator went off. He pressed the flashing button and Batman appeared in hologram form. "Batman."
"The heat source disappeared. Did you find the meta?"
"We did but we were on our way to a place to help her when a portal appeared and took both the meta and Superboy away." Robin decided to leave out the part about the green talking vulture.
"Was it a boom tube portal?"
"No but I believe Danny's parents had a similar one in their basement. We decided to head there and try to get their portal to work so we could rescue him."
"Negative. Superboy can handle himself until we find a way to get him back. Flash was tasked with watching Danny and finding out more about his past. He failed and the teen is now missing. These are his last known coordinates."
Important Line Break!
"Give him back!"
"Why should I?"
"Because Bones is my helper! You already have your own!" Youngblood was on the verge of tears as he tried to get his friend back.
"I told you I'd give you back your bird when you bring Phantom and boy blunder. Are they here? No, so no bird for you."
"That's not fair! They weren't together last time I saw Danny!"
Klarion gripped the skeleton bird in his hand tighter. "Then try harder to get them here together!"
Another important line break!
Danny knew it was wrong to leave Barry behind at the mall. But he'd been ignoring his obsession for too long and now it demanded he follow it. The techno watch the speedster had given him started beeping so he phased it off his wrist. Was it wrong to throw away a gift? Considering the beeping meant he was being tracked he didn't think so.
Danny sniffled and wiped at his eyes. The wind was really messing with his emotions right now.
He felt something in his core telling him to speed up so he turned intangible. The wind was no longer on his face but his eyes were still watering. Were these tears? Why was he crying? It probably wasn't important. He'll try to figure it out later.
The scenery was starting to look familiar to the halfa. The closer he got to where his core was telling him the more he realized he'd been here before. Finally he came to the welcome sign, an unknown feeling in the pit of his stomach. 'Welcome to Gotham' was almost unreadable under the multiple graffiti tags.
Danny debated whether or not he wanted to enter Gotham. Unfortunately the choice was made for him when he felt his core telling him to keep moving. His memories were fuzzy but he knew last time he'd been in Gotham something really bad happened.
