I admit that I wasn't expecting the chapter to turn out like this, but thinking about it, I realized that it was probably for the best. I need to experiment more with my writing style if I'm going to see improvements to it. As I mentioned in the last chapter, however, I could alter my upload schedule as two of my other stories came out underbaked because I'm posting every day, which I did do at one point, but quality control is hard enough as is. If the schedule changes, this will be updated on a bi-weekly basis instead of a weekly basis.

Chapter 05: Vexos and Resistance

Flying above the clouds of Vestroia, far from any of their colony cities, sailed the Vestal destroyer, one of the largest ships ever built by the Vestals and the flagship of their occupational forces on the alien world. Its dark, imposing colors were a clear signal to all of who was in charge, but it also served another purpose: it was the module headquarters to the Vexos, the 6 top Bakugan brawlers of the Vestal people, and the direct enforcers of the royal families' will on Vestroia.

Within the ship lay their main meeting area, which lacked chairs or a large table. Instead, it was a wide-open space with wide windows on three sides, giving ample views of the clouds around. At the moment, five of the five had gathered as they awaited their final member.

That member arrived via teleportation. In a burst of light, a tall, beautiful woman appeared dressed in the same fashion as the rest, elegant and elaborate clothing themed around the color of her attitude of choice, Aquos. Her hair was similar to blue, a larger shade matching her eyes. Eyes that housed arrogance and callousness.

"You're late." One of her comrades pointed out. The teammate in question had long, wavy, deep blue hair and green eyes, which, at present, were annoyed with her. His orange jacket denotes his status as the Vexos' Subterra brawler, with a more grounded pair of brown boots and black fingerless gloves.

"Some of us have work to do, wretch." She replied, dismissing him as she strolled into the room proper.

"You'll do well to be punctual next time, Mylene." His eyes narrowed at her, not caring for the insult against him, but when Spectre called a meeting, you'd be wise to arrive on time.

"And who will stop me? I'm here, aren't I?" Mylene asked him; Gus was not moving through. She could tell how much he wanted to, but without permission, he would remain as still as a statue. "In fact, we're all here, Spectre. So what was so important that you summoned us all here?"

Volt, their Haos brawler and the largest person there spoke before Mylene could start some pointless argument with Gus. "She's right. We could have had this meeting over holo-call, but you pulled us from our duties for it instead."

"I wanted to see you all face to face, is all," Spectre started before chucking as he turned to them all from his place at the front, as he often stood. "But in all seriousness, it was to ensure the severity of the order was imparted straight from our dear Professor Clay."

"So what? We don't take orders from some nerd. He can't even get his project straight." Their youngest and newest member waved off.

The rest didn't bother trying to scold him; the Ventus brawler was as bratty as an effective Ventus brawler. Spectre, on the other hand, took an amused stance on that. "Interesting, Lync. So, I suppose you'll be willing to repeat that statement to his highness? After all, the professor is acting with his expressed permission."

At the reveal, Lync's tune changes fast, as it is terrible enough to disobey a direct order from royalty. Still, their prince is not known for his mercy or compassion. If he discovered Lync openly mocked him, even if the boy didn't think it was the prince… "I mean, on second thought," He tried to dig himself out of the hole before he was buried, to which Gus, their Subterra brawler, rolled his eyes. "Can it, you!"

"I didn't say anything." The blue-haired teen replied.

"Yeah, yeah, so the doc's got the prince in his corner. What are we doing?" Shadow spoke up, already bored of this, but unlike Lync, he wasn't so insane that he would dismiss it, either.

"Yesterday, there was a brawl in Beta City. I'll spare you the unimportant details, but what matters is that the winner of that brawl's Bakugan gave off energy comparable to that of the 6 Legendary Bakugan." Spectre started, and the entire room came alive. They couldn't believe such a response.

"Wait, one of the 6?" Shadow Prove asked, eager for that fight.

"It's Impossible. We've been searching since we got here and only found half of them." Mylene, however, was skeptical.

"The 6?" Lync asked, confused as to why this was such a big deal.

"Imbecile," Gus stated, and ignoring Lync yelling at him, he turned to Specter. "Forgive me, Master Spectre, but I must admit that I find that suspect. Out of all the places for the remaining 3 Legendary Bakugan to appear, why would one appear in the middle of our city?"

Spectre nodded. "I never said it was one, just that it had comparable energy. We already know that it was seemingly just a common set of Bakugan; however, the professor believes this isn't merely chance. If this brawler and his Bakugan can prove to aid in our search, then it would be best if we moved to capture them."

"I see," Volt replied, considering their leader's words. "Well, that does explain why we're here. I can imagine that his highness has clarified that this is a top priority?"

"Yes, but the other reason I gathered you was to see which among you volunteer for the mission," Spectre explained, to which Shadow jumped up from where he had been squatting.

"Oh boy, sigh me-!"

"I'll do it." Volt cut him off.

"Dang it, you can't just cut me off!" Shadow yelled at him, but the large brawler hardly batted him an eye; none of them did as Spectre's masked face turned towards Volt.

"Volt. You're an eager one, are you?" He asked, his smile small but one that could be hiding who knew what. None of them could ever get a read on what Spectre was thinking.

"This needs to get done; I can get it done. Nothing more about it, Spectre." Volt replied.

"Very well, then I shall leave this in your capable hands," Spectre said, approaching him and handing him a small thumb drive. Here is the data that got the professor's attention. I also added the data we could gain from your target's previous battles."

"All right, I'll leave immediately." Volt took the offered drive and turned to leave, using the teleporter to return to wherever he had been before being summoned.

"Look at him go! Man is a brick wall with a rocket engine strapped to his back!" Shadow clapped in delight as Mylene sighed.

"Can you be any more annoying?" Mylene asked him, already feeling the headache forming as Shadow crackled.

"I try, but that's far too boring."

"Well, that was all I wished to discuss. You may all leave." Spectre dismissed them, with the members not needing to be told twice. Lync left for his ship as he arrived with that, while Mylene and Shadow both used the teleporter, leaving Spectre with just Gus.

"Gus, you have something on your mind?" He guessed as his right-hand man bowed.

"Yes, master Spectre, I ask forgiveness. I don't mean to overstep-"

"It is fine, Gus. I want to hear your thoughts on this." Spectre stopped.

"I still suspect that such an energy would just…appear like that; one could say it was gift-rapped for us," Gus stated, as this seemed too good to be true. For months, they hadn't seen or heard any leads on the missing 3 Legendary Bakugan. Then, a Bakugan with similar energy just… appeared out of nowhere.

Spectre smiled just a little as he appreciated how suspicious and cautious Gus could be. "I considered it, but the resistance cannot fake it, and if they did manage to acquire one of the missing Bakugan, they'd never be so foolish as to advertise like that." He had been the one that captured their last one, Haos Blade Tigrerra, in a brawl against the resistance, but that had been a while ago.

"Which leads to my other concern. If you do believe there is merit to this, why didn't you accept this hunt?" Gus asked if this was important and could lead to a strong opponent. Spectre and Helios would have loved to handle this themselves.

Spectre's smile grew as he turned and walked towards the windows as their ship broke through the clouds, giving them a view of the vast forest below. "Because, Gus, I'm curious."

"Curious?" Gus asked.

"Yes. I've watched this…Alban Ganymede brawl, and for someone unranked, he's far from a novice. He plays the game well, but in that last match," Spectre hadn't felt this excited. "Do you recall that report we had the other day?"

"Which one?"

"The one about the surprise storm that struck the royal palace?" Spectre specified, and when Gus nodded, he continued. "On a whim, I compared the data from then to this. They were 70% match."

Gus' eyes widened. "Does the professor know?"

"I have yet to contact him about it, but as research is his job, I trust that he'll discover that connection soon enough," Spectre replied, though it was just double speak.

"If I'm not mistaken, that was attributed to an imbalance in Vestroia's core. For these two incidents to have such similar energy…" Gus theorized before he realized what his master was plotting.

"I understand, Master Spectre." Gus backed off.

"Good, then you should get back to business. If I'm not mistaken, you're in the middle of your hunt for Preyas." Spectre dismissed him as Gus bowed and left, leaving the leader of the Vexos with just his guardian, Bakugan, the strongest of them all.

'Helios, looks like we have a chance to battle a Bakugan with powers even greater than the 6 Legendries.' Spectre thought. 'I hope that it's worth the excitement.'

Far from them, travelling along the ground, was a massive transport vehicle that served as the home for the Bakugan Battle Brawlers Resistance. The vehicle was so large that it would be easier to call it a self-propelled building, with all the faculties and space for its crew and then some.

Inside her room, Mira Fermin, the leader of the rag-tag group, has been contemplating their destination and target for a while now. She ate her dinner in her room instead of with the other two.

"Mira, are you there?" she yelped, blinking to clear her head as she looked towards her desk, where her Bakugan sat, worried for his brawler. "There you go. I've been trying to get your attention for the past five minutes."

"Sorry, Wilda. My mind has been in the clouds." She apologized, as that wasn't like her.

"Care to share?" Wilda asked.

Mira didn't need to think or worry, as she was honest with him. "It's about this new brawler."

Wilda hummed. "Oh, yes, the Aquos fellow. You know, you got similar pensive when you went after Ace." He reminded her, to which she smiled as she recalled those early days.

"Maybe not that much. Ace, I had more info on; that was more him being my first recruit. It would have bombed if I tracked him down, and he refused or worse." Mira could hardly believe that she's been doing this for 2 years. Now, how she imagined her life, she would gone, but she didn't regret any of it…outside the more embarrassing moments like how much she stressed in her plans to find recruits.

"Yes, there isn't much about Alban, is there?" Wilda asked.

"Nothing. This was his first league match, but he's definitely brawled before. No one would just luck out like that." Mira replied, as they had looked him up, but outside talk on forums about people losing to him, there wasn't anything else. Even those messages hardly mentioned how they lost, just that they did and they were made about it. It wouldn't even know which Bakugan attitude Alban preferred from them.

"So you wonder why now, then? Why did he bother getting into the League now instead of earlier?" Wilda asked about their experiences with one another, making it easy for him to theorize about what was worrying her so much.

"Embarrassment maybe; tons of people try and end up washing out." She guessed, as so many thought themselves assured future members of the top bracket or that they could challenge the vexes for their spots, but just as many were lucky if they broke into the top 1000 in their city.

"True, but he didn't seem to act like the sort that cares for fame," Wilda noted as Alban was quick to leave, and then there was that chase he got into before he finally lost his newly gained fans.

"I just hope he's not one of those guys with delusions of grandeur." Mira sighed, as she couldn't deal with someone like that.

"We have Baren on our team, and we manage just fine." Wilda joked, getting a smile out of her.

"Baren isn't so bad. He's young and eager to please, but he's a diligent learner and brawler." She defended their youngest member, but her mod dipped as she returned to thinking. "Still, there is something I'm missing here."

"Mira," There was a knock on her door before it opened, revealing Ace. "We'll arrive outside Beta City in the morning. Baren's heading to bed, and I'll take his spot driving."

"That'll mean you'll be too exhausted to help tomorrow. Can't we just all rest now?" Mira asked as they couldn't be that far from the place.

"Nope; we either drive through the night and arrive in the morning. Or we rest and end up there in the afternoon at best," Ace replied. This didn't make for a reasonable timetable, as if they arrived late, they could miss their chance. Besides, this brawler didn't like the spotlight; what was stopping them from leaving or going into hiding?

"Fine, but we'll take turns. You'll drive for four hours, and then you'll wake me up to take your place. That'll give you a chance to rest up," Mira ordered as she got up and stretched.

Ace shrugged. "Suit yourself. But if that's the case, you should try and get some shut-eye. I wouldn't want to go off the cliff because you were at the wheel." With that, he turned and left to inform Baren of the change.

The following morning, Lelouch reluctantly went out to pick up some groceries. The funds were less of an issue than the fact that he had been recognized since he got into the more populated parts of the city. "At least they're keeping their distance now, " he muttered, as the crowds seemed eager to try to rush him, barely holding themselves back.

The teen was dismayed to see that more than half were young girls; it was Ashford's crossdresser's ball all over again.

"Well, you didn't exactly come off as pleasant." Juggernoid joked from within his jacket as he and Sirenoid had decided to tag along with him.

"Still, it will make this a bit of a challenge, " Lelouch said as his shopping trip took him to a district close to the main government office, one that he could see was heavily guarded even from here. But where's the fun in something if it doesn't stimulate the brain?" He smiled.

"And how do you intend to get in?" Sirenoid asked as she had already heard of his intention to gather info

"I've been preparing tools for that, but we can't do it now. We'll wait until around midday." Lelouch replied, Sirenoid accepting that he was going to be vague, at least in public. How he could talk without moving his lips enough for others to notice, she didn't know.

"Midday? Why not night?" Juggernoid asked. The kid even had a costume tailored for such a time.

"Because the cover of darkness is the perfect cover, so naturally, they'll be on higher alert," Lelouch replied. However, if he had his geass, it would be a more straightforward process. Alas, he would need to work with the tools he had, as always. "But during the day? That's brazen."

"Improbable is more the word I would use. You'll need the miracle of the Gods to accomplish such, " Sirenoid said as her new…partner turned to walk off, acting like just another citizen out and about.

"Yes, it would be difficult, some might say impossible," Lelouch admitted, but her word choice only made him smile all the more. "But I say it can be done because we'll create our own miracle."

Beta City Hall was one of the more luxurious buildings in the city, even if it wasn't the tallest, standing only 5 stories tall. It served as both the administrative hub and the residence for the city's Major, which included Shalta, though at that time of day, she would be at school at the city's finest prep school.

Good, Lelouch would instead not involve children in this. He had already scoped the place out in the past, typically in the early morning and late night. He confirmed that a nighttime attempt would fail, as they seemed to have almost double the number of guards then. Making a daytime attempt at their best bet, why did he choose midday of all times? Well, he was the confident type of dramatic. While he wasn't planning to make his debut just yet to the people, he could leave an impression on the government and its enforcers.

2 weeks of planning and observation, and he had tracked everything of importance, including the taxi service.

"Are you chewing?" One of the guards at the entrance asked as his partner stood by his side for his shift.

"Relax, it's just some gum; no harm done." The man waved him off as he continued to chew on whatever gun he had managed to bring.

The first sighed, rubbing at his face. "I can't believe it; we're meant to focus on our jobs."

"Hey, if you can't keep an eye out while chewing something, you should see a doctor." The second chuckled as the first just decided it wasn't worth it. He could pick up the slack if nothing else, though today was a slow day. Typically, there'll be more people coming to and fro, but the rumor was that the Major was hosting an important guest, though he had no clue who or for how long.

"Looks alive. We have a taxi coming." The gum chewer pointed out that, as always, a city taxi was driving towards them, probably to drop off someone who had some business to attend to. However, something seemed off about it.

"Wait, are you seeing this?" He asked as his fellow guard turned and saw that the taxi wasn't slowing down; it was speeding up. The damn thing even deployed its rocket booster and blasted towards them.

"Look out!" Both dived to the side as the taxi veered far to the side at the last second, crashing into the wall and nearly smashing through. Its rocket booster blasted for another few seconds before its engine died.

"What the devil was that?" One of them asked, helping the other up.

"Darn it, call that in while I check it out. There could be injuries!" The gum chewer spat out the now-used piece of candy and rushed over to help. Lord, did he hope that the passengers had been wearing se

at belts?

"Right, " the second replied as he reached for his mic, which was attached to his visor/earpiece. "Command, we have a situation at the main entrance."

There was a crackle before the radio was picked up. "What is it?"

"A taxi crashed into the wall outside; it was moving well enough, but then it bolted right for us." He reported as his fellow security guard slowly made his way over, keeping an eye out for anything that might suggest it could explode.

"Injuries?"

"We're still checking. We'll get back to you on that, " he replied as his partner made it to the car and managed to pull the door open. Inside, he found the robot driver totaled, glitching as it thanked its passenger for choosing Happy Cab and staying safe.

"What the? No, one is in it?" But…there was no passenger, just a large bag. Did someone leave it by mistake? Right as he was reaching for it, he heard something from it, and once he realized what it was, his heart froze.

It was a ticking sound.

He couldn't get a word out, much less run before the baggage detonated, or at least it looked like it was as the bag expanded like a balloon before jets of black smoke poured out of it from every torn seem, though the gaps in the zipper. The pressure was so great that a hole was blown in the bag's side.

"A secondary explosion? Gaz!" the remaining security guard called out as the area quickly filled with smoke. Coughing, he tried to wave it off, but the staff was spreading fast. "Command, the situation changed. The taxi might be in danger of exploding if it hasn't already. We need the fire suppression team here."

"Confirmed, they're on their way." He had only gotten the response when a second taxi came barrelling down the street, its rocket engine firing at full blast before it careened into the old café across the street. Moments later, it too seemed to explode, pouring out a vast cloud of smoke that slowly filled the street. Civilians in the area turned and ran away.

"And that's step one." From an alley, Lelouch watched the action unfold, happy that his plans were coming together.

"How did you?" Sirenoid asked but stopped as she didn't know what to ask about.

"I made smoke bombs and put them into bags. I then left them in the taxis with timers on them." He responded, recalling the times he would purchase the supplies, carefully limiting any evidence that led back to his alter ego.

"That would explain the smoke, but how did you guess they'll even be in the area?" Sirenoid asked while Juggernoid remained silent, having been present when Lelouch first cooked up the plan.

"I've watched them, those license plates always come here now. So, after getting my hands on some equipment to hack them, I could put a little program into them, turning the bots into suicide bombers." He explained as he watched firefighters pour out of city hall, some yelling that the city fire brigade was on its way."

"I just hope no one was badly hurt," Juggernoid noted, with Sirenoid scoffing at him. Why should they care if a few of their oppressors got hurt? It was nothing compared to what they had done to them.

Lelouch didn't admonish or praise her for that sentiment. "I accounted for that; that storefront is empty; its previous tenant had moved out 2 days ago." He answered. 'I won't spill needless blood.' His mind flashed to Shirley, how her every cheerful, upbeat face was shattered by the reality that her father, an innocent man, was killed. And how she was further broken when she realized he had done it.

'Not again,' Lelouch vowed. He refused to be sloppy; he would plan and plan and then plan more. If that was what it took to not hurt someone else like Shirley again, then he'd gladly take on that burden.

"Give it 50 seconds for the smoke to mask our approach. We'll get into the property and look for an access point out of view." He reminded them that, as the smoke was still blasting out his two bags, the chemicals he used were violently reactive and could produce a lot of the stuff. Meanwhile, he tapped the bag he was carrying.

"And what was that?" Volt asked, looking out the mayor's window as smoke blanketed the street.

"Seems like there was an accident at the main gate. Nothing to worry about." The man told him, only to freeze when Volt, bigger than his senior, turned an unamused glare at him.

"If it could cause that much smoke, then it's something to worry about, " he corrected him, turning his frame to face him. "Or are you going to disagree with me?"

"N-no! I would never. I'll send even more help to handle things!" The mayor quickly bowed to his demands, disgusting the brawler. Couldn't he at least pretend to care about the state of his city?

An aide comes bursting in, short of breath. "Sir, I have a report on the situation!"

"Well then, spit it out!" The mayor yelled at him as the man gathered himself before speaking.

"It seems like 2 taxis suffered accidents outside the main gate. One crashed close to it, and the other into a business on the other side of the road."

"That doesn't sound like a two-car collision," Volt stated, as they could investigate what caused the first crash, but the second? What were the odds of that happening?

"It wasn't. The first came one way and crashed first. The second vehicle came from another road almost a minute later." Volt's eyes widened as he turned and walked towards the door.

"I'll let you handle this." He stated that without looking back, the mayor was left bewildered by his behavior.

"What? Wait, where are you going?" He asked.

"We could have a bigger problem than just an accident." He turned his head to say just that before he left the room, walking down the halls as he thought about the situation. 'No way this was a chance. I arrived in the city to search for a mysterious brawler, and then this happened.'

They hadn't announced his rival, but loose lips led to rumors. This was not helped by the fact that the Major insisted on a planned announcement later and an expedition match for any who wished to challenge a member of the Vexos, which would only increase the number of people who knew.

'It has to be the resistance, but why? What is their game? What do they want here?' They've never done something this brazen before, so openly violent as to set off two explosions in the middle of town. That seemed more up Shadow or Mylene's alley. Still, he was sure it was merely a distraction; they didn't care for attention, and the resistance wanted results.

"Intruder alert! Intruder alert! Unauthorized access has been recorded in the west wing! Unauthorized access has been recorded in the west wing!"

"That's where-!" Volt started, only for his glare to harden as that was where the files were kept on just about everything in the city. "Of course, that's what they're after!" He turned and ran in that direction, yelling for any guards to follow him in capturing their thief.

"Guys, are you seeing this?" Mira asked, watching the incident from behind the police tape. The street was still covered in smoke, but it had gone down a little as the firefighters dealt with it.

"Yup!" Barren replied from the other end of the street.

"It's hard to miss," Ace, who was posted up on a building, added. Are you thinking what I'm thinking?"

Mira nodded as she looked at the crime scene and could see some issues with it. "There's so much smoke, but I barely saw any fires. This couldn't have just been an accident." Cabs weren't combustible, not to this extent. Yet the one she could see didn't have signs of fire damage. Instead, it was just covered in thick black dust.

If the other was the same, someone must have staged it, but why? Why do something like this right in front of city hall? What was there to gain? She and the rest jumped when they heard the sirens coming from inside the compound, blaring red whites coming on as security that had been helping with the clean-up rushed back inside as the gates sealed.

"Guys, City Hall's gone into lockdown! This gotta be something big!" Baren saw the same thing on his side of things.

Ace looked away, down the road on Baren's side, and saw that it wasn't just the compound they needed to worry about. "He's right. I'm seeing security rushing towards the place from all over." He could see at least nine squad cars coming, and there had to be more on the way.

"Mira, this…" Wilda spoke up, safely hidden in her jacket.

"I know." This had a set-up written all over it. The why might be related to what happened next, as the west side of city hall suffered yet another explosion, this one seemingly much more fiery than these glorified smoke bombs. "Hold on, there's been another explosion. I'm heading there to check it out." Mira rushed to her bike and drove towards the area where the explosion was located.

Hiding in the shadows of the alleys, she saw something strange as she pulled out a specialized microphone and turned on her bike's speaker. 'What the?'

Standing close to the opening in the wall was a figure like she had never seen before. Whoever they were, they wore elaborate and regal attire made from a black bodysuit with white and blue armor-like details. Their backs were to her, so she could only see the flowing white cape with pauldrons edged in blue. He also seemed to be wearing a white and blue helmet, which she bet covered his face.

"You have nowhere to run, so hand over that stolen data and surrender. Your resistance will fall soon enough." Mire heard a familiar voice speak. That had to be Volt, but what was he doing here?

'He thinks he's one of us?' She realized a moment later. Was he sent because the Vexos thought they had an agent in the city? Maybe, but even still, what could be in the…blueprints.

Despite having his back to a 4 story drop, the masked man hardly seemed phased. "That seems quite tempting, but shouldn't one offer such when your foe cannot escape or claim victory?" If anything, he sounded as confident as a man about to relax in the sea.

"Don't play games with me. Give up and tell me what you know about that mysterious Bakugan energy." Volt's response only added to her confusion. Energy? What energy? If he thought this person was with them, it could be only one sort of energy.

'No way.' It was…improbable, but not impossible that this person had one of the remaining 6 Legendary Bakugan.

"Oh, but where would be the fun in that?" The masked man asked as he took a step back, towards a fall that would surely kill him. "If you want to make me talk, you must do better."

"Don't you dare!" Volt rushed him, trying to save his life and keep a source of information.

"Till we meet again, Light of the Vexos." As soon as he stepped out of the building, the masked man's hand shot out, firing a cable above, latching into the wall as he used that to swing away from the home, having kicked off right as Volt was about to grab him.

Once he cleared the wall, and with the crowd watching, he fired another line towards another building, reeling it in as soon as it latched, zipping away as he landed on the rooftop and took off.

"Stop him!" For that, Mira didn't need her equipment to hear Volt; the man looked furious. "Get every cop in the city; don't let that man escape!"

Still, that…was something, one she couldn't ignore. "Guys, change of plans, I think we've found our man, and proof that he's definitely not working with the vexos."

"Doesn't mean he'll side with us." Ace reminded her.

"Hey, the enemy of my enemy and all that. I'll contact you later; I'll follow them!" she replied before she turned and took off, trying to spot their masked criminal as if he was the one she was after. If she was truly an enemy of the government, then maybe…

And with that, we're done. It took a little longer than I thought, but I managed to finish editing. As you all read, the change was that, for one, Lelouch wasn't the biggest player, narratively at least. Instead, he's basically the McGuffin.

The next chapter will be out on February 6th
