The train's wheels screeched against the metal tracks as it pulled into Canterlot Station, billowing steam rising to mingle with the early morning fog. The doors slid open with a pneumatic hiss, and eight weary travelers disembarked onto the platform.
"I still don't understand why we couldn't just teleport here," grumbled Soarin, stretching his wings that had been cramped during the long journey. The weather patrol pony rolled his shoulders, wincing as several joints popped audibly.
"Because my teleportation spell can only handle three ponies at most," Comet Tail replied, his horn glowing faintly as he levitated their luggage beside them. "Besides, I've been working on a new stellar mapping calculation and needed the quiet travel time."
"Quiet?" Cheese Sandwich exclaimed, bouncing on his hooves despite the early hour. "That was one of my most entertaining train performances yet! Did you see how I balanced that cupcake on my nose while juggling those rubber chickens?"
"Hard to miss, considering one of them landed in my mane," Time Turner remarked dryly, still picking bits of frosting from his chestnut-colored locks.
Spike yawned widely, revealing his sharp dragon teeth. The last two months had been particularly eventful for the young dragon. His journey to the Dragon Lands had been eye-opening, to say the least. Meeting other dragons his age had helped him better understand his heritage, though he'd ultimately decided that his home was with his pony family. The small purple dragon had grown perhaps an inch taller since the Canterlot wedding, but otherwise remained wingless and firmly in the awkward phase between hatchling and adolescent.
"I still think this 'utmost importance' business could have waited until after breakfast," he complained, his stomach growling loudly enough for nearby ponies to turn and stare.
Braeburn adjusted his hat as they began walking toward the castle. "Green Leaf ain't one for exaggeration, little partner. If he says it's important, you can bet your last bit it is."
Twilight Sparkle trotted alongside Comet, her saddlebags filled with books on ancient Equestrian history. She'd spent the previous evening frantically packing every tome that might prove useful, though without knowing the nature of their summons, her selection had been somewhat haphazard.
"I just hope everything's alright with Princess Luna," she said quietly to Comet. "She's been carrying the burden of both the moon and sun since Celestia disappeared."
Comet's expression softened as he glanced at Twilight. "She's stronger than most give her credit for, but you're right to be concerned. Nopony should have to bear that much responsibility alone."
The mention of Princess Celestia brought a somber mood to the group as they made their way through Canterlot's pristine streets. The search for the missing Princess of the Sun had consumed much of their attention over the past two months, with frequent magical experiments and research sessions yielding frustratingly little progress.
The conversation shifted to lighter topics as they approached the castle grounds, with Spike recounting their recent encounter with Rainbow Dash's foalhood griffon friend, Gilda. The griffon's visit to Ponyville had been memorable, though not entirely pleasant. Her rude behavior and relentless pranking had grated on everyone's nerves, particularly Fluttershy's, whom Gilda had reduced to tears with her harsh comments. In the end, even Rainbow Dash had been forced to acknowledge that her old friend wasn't as cool as she remembered. Spike had been particularly unimpressed, having expected griffons to be more majestic and less mean-spirited.
The castle guards recognized them immediately, snapping to attention as they approached the main gates.
"The Princess and Royal Advisor are expecting you in the throne room," the guard on the right informed them, gesturing for them to follow another guard who had appeared to escort them.
The hallways of Canterlot Castle seemed unusually quiet. Ever since the changeling invasion, security had been significantly increased, with identity verification spells at every major entrance and patrols doubled throughout the grounds. The stained-glass windows they passed depicted scenes of Equestrian history, though notably, the most recent addition showing the defeat of Queen Chrysalis featured Princess Cadence and Shining Armor rather than Celestia.
When they finally reached the ornate doors of the throne room, their escort knocked three times before the doors swung open seemingly of their own accord.
Princess Luna sat upon the throne that had once been her sister's, her ethereal mane flowing with the stars and cosmos contained within. Despite the evident weariness in her eyes, she maintained an aura of regal authority. Beside her stood Green Leaf, his emerald coat contrasting sharply with the scrolls and maps spread across a large table before them.
The group bowed respectfully as they entered.
"Rise, Elements of Harmony," Luna commanded, her voice echoing slightly with its natural power. "We thank thee for thy prompt arrival."
"Princess Luna, Green Leaf," Comet acknowledged as he straightened. "Your message sounded urgent."
Green Leaf nodded gravely. "Indeed it is, Mr. Tail. We face a situation that could potentially threaten all of Equestria."
"Any progress on bringing back Princess Celestia?" Comet asked, unable to keep the hope from his voice. "Have you been able to trace the teleportation spell the changelings used?"
Luna and Green Leaf exchanged a brief glance before the Princess replied. "The progress is slow, but it does exist," she assured them. "Our mages have identified several possible dimensional pockets where Chrysalis may have secreted our sister, but the exact location remains elusive."
"However," Green Leaf interjected, "that is not why we have summoned you today." He gestured toward the maps on the table. "Three days ago, our scouts in the Frozen North reported a most concerning development."
With practiced precision, Green Leaf used his magic to unroll the largest map, revealing a detailed rendering of Equestria's northern territories. A glimmering area had been circled in red ink.
"One thousand years ago," he began, his cultured voice taking on the cadence of a historian, "the Crystal Empire was one of the most magnificent kingdoms in all the land. Its magic was powered by the positive emotions of the crystal ponies who dwelled there, creating a force that spread throughout Equestria."
Luna's horn glowed, conjuring a shimmering illusion above the table. A beautiful crystalline city materialized, its spires reaching toward the sky while rainbow light emanated from its center.
"But the Empire was not without its enemies," Green Leaf continued, as Luna's illusion darkened. A shadowy figure with cruel eyes appeared, towering over the crystal structures. "King Sombra, a unicorn whose heart was as black as night.
seized control of the Crystal Empire. He enslaved the crystal ponies and used his dark magic for terrible purposes."
The illusion showed crystal ponies in chains, their once-bright coats dulled with misery as they labored under Sombra's watchful gaze.
"Princess Celestia and I confronted him," Luna added, her voice tight with the memory. "After a brutal battle, we banished him to the frozen wastes of the arctic north."
"But not before he cast a curse upon the Empire," Green Leaf said grimly. "A curse that caused the entire kingdom and all its inhabitants to vanish without a trace."
Luna's illusion showed the Crystal Empire slowly fading from existence, like mist dispersing in sunlight.
"Until now," Green Leaf concluded, pointing to the red circle on the map. "The Empire has returned, but so has its terrible king. If Sombra regains control of the Crystal Empire, the consequences for Equestria would be dire indeed."
Cheese Sandwich raised a hoof. "So we go there, give this Sombra fellow a good bucking, and save the day! Sounds simple enough."
"If only it were that straightforward, Mr. Sandwich," Green Leaf said with a slight frown. "King Sombra's power is not to be underestimated. Even Princess Celestia and Luna together struggled against him."
"We have already dispatched Princess Cadence and Captain Shining Armor to the Crystal Empire," Luna explained. "Their combined magic has created a protective barrier keeping Sombra at bay for now. But the spell is taxing, and they cannot maintain it indefinitely."
"They just got back from their honeymoon," Comet observed with a hint of sympathy. "Seems a pity they have to deal with an ancient evil so soon."
Green Leaf's expression remained impassive. "When one is both Captain of the Royal Guard and a member of the royal family, one must be prepared for such eventualities. Duty rarely accommodates personal convenience."
"Your task," Luna continued, directing her gaze specifically at Comet, "is to find a way to protect the Empire without the aid of Princess Cadence's magic. Go to the Crystal Empire, assist them however you can, and help the crystal ponies remember who they are and the power they possess to defeat Sombra themselves."
"The train to the Frozen North departs in one hour," Green Leaf added. "We've arranged for a private car and have supplied it with everything you might need for the journey, including breakfast." He glanced pointedly at Spike, whose stomach chose that moment to growl again.
Comet stepped forward, determination evident in his stance. "We won't let you down, Princess. We'll find a way to save the Crystal Empire."
Luna nodded solemnly. "I have faith in all of you. But be warned—Sombra's power stems from fear and darkness. He will try to use your own fears against you."
The weight of their mission settled heavily on the group as they bowed once more and prepared to depart. As they turned to leave, Luna called out one final time.
"Comet Tail." Her voice was softer now, almost vulnerable. "My sister saw great potential in you. Show me I was right to trust her judgment."
Comet met her gaze steadily and nodded. "I will, Princess."
As they exited the throne room, Twilight moved closer to Comet, her shoulder brushing against his in silent support. Ahead of them lay an ancient empire, a terrible king, and a challenge unlike any they had faced before. But they would face it together, as they had every challenge since that fateful night in Ponyville.
The train slowed to a creaking halt, its brakes screeching against the frozen rails. Beyond the frost-covered windows, there was nothing but an endless expanse of white. The conductor's voice echoed through the nearly empty carriages: "Final stop, Northern Frontier. All passengers must disembark."
"Final stop? This can't be right," Time Turner muttered, peering through the glass. "There's nothing here."
"Did you expect a welcoming committee?" Braeburn asked, already bundling himself in additional layers. "Green Leaf said this place has been gone for a thousand years."
The group reluctantly filed out of the warm train car and onto a desolate, snow-covered platform. The wind howled around them, carrying ice crystals that stung any exposed skin. The temperature was brutal—far colder than even the highest reaches of Cloudsdale during winter wrap-up.
Soarin flapped his wings experimentally, then shook his head. "Flying's a no-go in this wind. We'd get blown halfway to Yakyakistan."
"So what now?" Thunderlane asked. "We just start walking toward... where exactly?"
Before anypony could answer, a dark figure emerged from the wall of white, moving slowly but deliberately toward them. The ponies tensed, Comet's horn beginning to glow with defensive magic. As the figure drew closer, they could make out a unicorn stallion wearing a thick scarf wrapped around his neck and a pair of protective goggles covering his eyes.
"Get ready," Comet whispered to the others. "We don't know if—"
The figure reached up and pulled down both scarf and goggles, revealing a familiar face with a tired smile.
"Shining!" Twilight cried out, rushing forward through the snow.
Shining Armor caught his sister in a tight embrace, nuzzling her affectionately. "Hey there, Twily. Sorry about the dramatic entrance."
"My BBBFF," Twilight said, her voice muffled against his chest. "I missed you."
"Missed you too, sis," he replied, then looked up at the others with a far more serious expression. "But we need to get moving. Now. It's not safe to linger out here."
Comet stepped forward, extending a hoof which Shining clasped firmly. "Is it Sombra?" he asked without preamble.
Shining's jaw tightened as he nodded. "He's getting stronger. The barrier Cadence created is holding, but..." He glanced around nervously, scanning the swirling snow. "We should talk while we move. Follow me, and stay close."
With Shining Armor leading the way, the group trudged into the blinding snowstorm. The going was difficult; the snow reached halfway up their legs, and the constant wind made it nearly impossible to maintain a straight path. Conversation died quickly as they focused on the grueling journey, each lost in their own thoughts.
Braeburn pulled his hat lower, squinting against the biting wind. The desert-dwelling pony had never experienced cold like this and was clearly struggling. Time Turner walked beside him, occasionally steadying the cowpony when he stumbled.
Cheese Sandwich, normally irrepressible, had fallen uncharacteristically quiet, his usual bouncing stride reduced to a determined plod. Even his mane, which typically defied gravity, had been flattened by the relentless snow.
Spike, who had initially insisted he could walk on his own, soon found himself shivering violently despite his natural draconic heat. Comet wordlessly lifted the young dragon onto his back, where Spike gratefully clung to the unicorn's mane.
After what felt like hours but was perhaps only forty minutes, Shining Armor paused, pointing ahead. "There," he said, his breath forming clouds in the frigid air. "Can you see it?"
In the distance, a faint shimmer of light cut through the white haze—a dome of blueish energy rising majestically from the frozen landscape. As they drew nearer, the dome's structure became more apparent: a massive magical shield, pulsating with power.
"Cadence's barrier," Twilight breathed, equal parts awe and concern in her voice.
Their moment of hope was shattered by a sound that seemed to emanate from the storm itself—a deep, reverberating bellow that was neither animal nor natural. It was a sound of pure malevolence, ancient and hungry.
Shining's eyes widened with unmistakable fear. "Run," he said, his voice barely audible. Then louder, with the full command presence of a Royal Guard Captain: "RUN! NOW!"
They broke into a gallop, hooves kicking up snow as they charged toward the distant barrier. The temperature around them plummeted further, frost forming on their eyelashes and manes. Behind them, the snowstorm began to darken, white flakes turning gray, then black as pitch.
Spike clutched Comet's mane tightly, his claws digging into the unicorn's shoulders. "What is that thing?!" he cried out.
Nopony answered—they couldn't spare the breath. The darkness coalesced, forming a roiling tempest of shadow with two gleaming, venomous green eyes at its center. The form was both smoke and solid, shifting constantly as it pursued them.
"King Sombra," Comet gasped between labored breaths.
The distance to the barrier seemed impossibly vast. Despite their full gallop, the shadowy entity was gaining ground rapidly, tendrils of darkness reaching out like grasping claws.
Shining Armor suddenly skidded to a halt, pivoting to face the oncoming darkness. "Keep going!" he shouted to the others. "I'll hold him off!"
"No!" Twilight screamed, trying to turn back. Thunderlane caught her with a wing, urging her forward. "Shining, don't! We've already lost Celestia! I can't—" Her voice broke, tears freezing on her cheeks almost instantly in the bitter cold.
"I'll be right behind you," Shining promised, his horn already blazing with blue light. "Get to Cadence! GO!"
Comet made the difficult decision. "Come on," he urged the others, especially Twilight. "We have to trust him."
They pressed onward, the sounds of magical combat erupting behind them. Flashes of blue light burst against the darkness, followed by an unholy shriek that made their bones vibrate. Twilight kept looking back, her face a mask of anguish as she watched her brother facing the ancient evil alone.
The barrier loomed larger now, a tantalizing promise of safety just beyond reach. One by one, they pushed through its surface—a sensation like moving through warm honey—and emerged on the other side.
The transition was jarring. One moment, they were fighting through a frozen wasteland; the next, they stood on lush green grass under a clear blue sky. The temperature was pleasantly warm, like a perfect spring day. Around them stretched crystal structures that caught the sunlight and fractured it into thousands of rainbow patterns.
"It's... beautiful," Thunderlane whispered, his wings spreading slightly in the gentle breeze.
But Twilight wasn't looking at the scenery. Her eyes remained fixed on the barrier, searching desperately for any sign of her brother. "Where is he?" she murmured, her voice tight with panic. "He should be right behind us."
The others joined her vigil, watching the opaque surface of the magical shield with growing concern.
"There!" Spike suddenly shouted, pointing.
A figure burst through the barrier, tumbling roughly onto the grass. Shining Armor lay panting, his coat singed in places but most alarming was his horn—once smooth and proud, now partially covered in jagged black crystals that seemed to pulse with malevolent energy.
They rushed to his side, Twilight reaching him first. "Shining! Are you hurt? What happened to your horn?"
Shining struggled to his hooves, wincing as he tried to summon magic. Small sparks fizzled from the tip of his horn, but nothing more. "Sombra's corruption," he explained grimly. "He targets unicorn magic first. Can't cast any spells now."
"We need to get those crystals off," Comet said, examining the black growths with a scholar's careful eye.
Shining shook his head. "Later. Cadence first. She's been holding the barrier alone for too long." He looked up at the massive crystal structure that dominated the center of the city—a castle that glittered like a massive gemstone under the sun. "She's in the palace throne room."
"But your injury—" Twilight began, still distressed.
"Will have to wait," Shining insisted, already starting toward the castle despite his evident exhaustion. "Every minute Cadence spends maintaining this shield weakens her. If she falls..."
The implications hung in the air. Without the barrier, King Sombra would pour into the Crystal Empire, and all would be lost.
"Then let's not waste any more time," Comet decided, helping Spike readjust his position on his back. "Lead the way, Captain."
As they moved through the eerily empty crystal streets, Twilight remained close to her brother's side, her expression torn between wonder at their surroundings and deep concern for both Shining and the absent crystal ponies. The others spread out slightly, taking in the magnificent architecture and strange stillness of the city.
"Where is everypony?" Braeburn wondered aloud, tipping his hat back to gaze up at the towering structures.
Shining's reply was grim. "Hiding. They're terrified. A thousand years under Sombra's rule, then a thousand more vanished into nothingness... they don't remember who they are anymore. They don't remember the Empire, or each other."
"Then we'll help them remember," Soarin said with unusual determination, his wings flared slightly.
"First things first," Shining replied, nodding toward the palace that loomed ever closer. "We save Cadence. Then we save the Empire."
With renewed purpose, the group quickened their pace toward the glittering palace, each silently preparing for whatever challenges awaited them within.
The throne room of the Crystal Palace was a breathtaking sight. Immense crystal columns stretched toward a vaulted ceiling that captured and refracted sunlight in dazzling patterns. Under different circumstances, the group might have paused to admire the architecture, but their attention was fixed on the slender pink alicorn seated upon the crystal throne.
Princess Cadence's normally vibrant mane hung limp around her face, and dark circles shadowed her eyes. Despite her evident exhaustion, her horn continued to glow with steady magic, channeling power into the barrier that surrounded the Empire. When she spotted the group entering, her weary expression brightened.
"Twilight! Comet!" she exclaimed, carefully rising from the throne. Her legs trembled slightly with the effort, but she managed to descend the steps to meet them.
Twilight rushed forward, immediately falling into their familiar greeting ritual. "Sunshine, sunshine, ladybugs awake!" they chanted together, performing the hoof movements that had been their special bond since Twilight was a filly.
"Clap your hooves and do a little shake!" they finished in unison, both laughing despite the gravity of the situation.
Cadence embraced Twilight warmly. "We really need to get together when the fate of Equestria isn't hanging in the balance," she said with a tired smile.
"That would make a welcome change," Comet agreed, stepping forward to bow respectfully.
Cadence acknowledged him with a nod, then turned her concerned gaze to her husband. "Shining, your horn..." She reached out to touch the black crystals but stopped just short, her expression troubled.
Shining Armor shook his head. "I'll be fine. It's you I'm worried about." He turned to address the entire group. "Cadence has been using her magic to spread love and light throughout the Empire. That seems to be what's protecting it from Sombra's influence. But she hasn't slept in days, has barely eaten..."
"I'm trying to help," he continued, frustration evident in his voice, "but my protection spell was countered by King Sombra. And once the power goes out..." He gestured toward the windows, where the barrier was visible in the distance. "Well, you've seen what awaits outside."
"When we arrived, we didn't have time to gather much information from the crystal ponies," Cadence added, her voice growing fainter. "Most of them seem confused, almost like they've forgotten who they are."
"That's why we're here," Comet said with determined confidence, exchanging a glance with Twilight. "We'll find a way to protect the Empire while you rest."
"Let us handle the detective work," Twilight added, already mentally organizing their approach. "You focus on maintaining your strength, Cadence."
The group split up to question the crystal ponies throughout the city. Thunderlane flew above the central plaza, hoping to get a better view of any gathering spots. Braeburn headed toward what appeared to be a marketplace, figuring that would be a good place to find locals willing to talk. Soarin investigated the residential districts, while Cheese Sandwich took his uniquely energetic approach to the northern quarter.
Comet, Twilight, Time Turner, and Spike coordinated their efforts in the central district, methodically moving from one crystal pony to the next. Most conversations followed a similar pattern:
"Excuse me, do you remember anything about a special tradition in the Crystal Empire?" Twilight would ask.
"The Crystal... Empire?" would come the confused reply, eyes vacant and coats oddly dull for crystal ponies. "Is that where we are?"
"What about King Sombra? Do you recall anything about him?" Comet would try.
At the mere mention of the name, the crystal ponies would shudder and back away, their dull coats becoming even more muted. "I... I don't want to remember that," was the typical response.
After several hours of fruitless questioning, the group reconvened at a small café near the palace. Disappointment was evident on every face as they shared their findings—or lack thereof.
"It's like their memories have been deliberately suppressed," Comet observed, absently stirring a cup of tea.
"Or they're too afraid to remember," Soarin added, picking at a pastry without much enthusiasm.
"The fear response when Sombra is mentioned is quite telling," Time Turner noted. "Classic psychological defense mechanism. The mind protects itself by blocking traumatic memories."
"So what do we do?" Spike asked, perched on the table. "If nopony remembers anything about how to protect the Empire, how can we help?"
Time Turner cleared his throat. "Actually, I might have something. An elderly mare mentioned that the royal library might contain historical information. Apparently, it was one of the few places Sombra didn't completely destroy, as he used it to research dark magic."
Twilight's ears perked up immediately. "A library? Why didn't you say so sooner?" The spark of excitement in her eyes was the first positive emotion any of them had shown since arriving.
"Lead the way, Time Turner," Comet said, rising from his seat. "The rest of you continue questioning the crystal ponies. Maybe somepony will remember something if we approach them differently."
The library was housed in the east wing of the crystal palace, its entrance marked by two imposing statues of armored pegasi. Inside, towering shelves stretched toward a domed ceiling, each filled with ancient tomes and scrolls. Despite the grandeur, a layer of dust covered nearly everything, suggesting the space had been largely neglected.
An elderly mare with a purple and white mane sat behind a desk, staring vacantly at nothing in particular. She startled when they approached.
"Oh! Visitors," she said, blinking rapidly. "Can I... help you?"
"We hope so," Twilight replied kindly. "We're looking for information about the history of the Crystal Empire. Do you know where we might find that?"
The mare frowned in confusion. "The history section? I... I'm not sure. I don't even know if I actually work here." She glanced around as if seeing the library for the first time. "This all feels... strange."
Comet exchanged a concerned look with Twilight. "That's alright. We'll just have a look around, if you don't mind."
The group split up, each taking a different section. Spike climbed the rolling ladders with impressive agility, checking the highest shelves that even Twilight's magic would have difficulty reaching accurately.
Time Turner methodically worked through what appeared to be an organizational system, muttering to himself about "inefficient categorization" and "chronological inconsistencies." Twilight moved with practiced precision, her horn glowing as she rapidly scanned titles and occasionally levitated a promising book for closer inspection.
Comet focused on what seemed to be the oldest section, where ancient scrolls and leather-bound tomes were stored in special glass cases. His scholarly background made him particularly adept at identifying historically significant texts based on their bindings and preservation methods.
After nearly two hours of searching, Comet's persistence paid off. In a small alcove, partially hidden behind a larger bookshelf, he discovered a glass case containing a crystal book that seemed to glow with its own inner light.
"I think I found something," he called out to the others.
Twilight was by his side in an instant, eyes widening at the sight of the book. "The crystal binding... I've only read about these in theoretical magic texts. They're supposed to be imbued with memories."
Carefully, Comet used his magic to open the case and lift the book. The cover bore an inscription in ancient Equestrian: "History of The Crystal Empire."
They gathered around a reading table as Comet gently opened the book.
Twilight and Comet pored over the pages, occasionally reading passages aloud. The book detailed the founding of the Crystal Empire by its first queen, the development of its unique magic, and the traditions that had sustained it through the ages.
"Here," Comet said suddenly, his hoof resting on a particular page. "Listen to this: 'The Crystal Faire was established by our first queen and became our most important tradition. The Faire was held every year to renew the spirit of love and unity in the empire so they could protect it from harm.'"
"A Crystal Faire," Twilight repeated thoughtfully. "That sounds like exactly what we need—a way to restore the crystal ponies' spirits and strengthen the Empire against Sombra."
Spike peered at the book. "Does it say how to throw this Faire?"
Comet flipped through several more pages, finding detailed descriptions of the activities, foods, and ceremonies involved. "It's all here—crystal corn, a petting zoo, the flugelhorn, jousting competition... everything we need to recreate it."
"We should tell Shining and Cadence immediately," Twilight said, already halfway to the door.
When they returned to the throne room, Cadence's condition had visibly worsened. The glow of her horn had dimmed significantly, and she leaned heavily against Shining Armor, who supported her despite his own injury.
"We found something," Comet announced, the book floating beside him. He quickly explained their discovery about the Crystal Faire and its purpose in protecting the Empire.
"A celebration of unity and love," Cadence murmured, a spark of hope lighting her exhausted eyes. "That's precisely the kind of magic that could power a defense against Sombra."
"But can we organize something like this quickly enough?" Shining Armor asked, glancing worriedly at his wife. "Cadence can't maintain the barrier much longer."
"That's why we need to get started right away," Comet replied with newfound determination. "Time Turner, find Cheese Sandwich—if anypony knows how to organize a celebration quickly, it's him. Spike, go with Time Turner. Twilight and I will stay here to study the book further and make sure we don't miss anything important."
As Time Turner and Spike hurried off, Twilight began making notes of everything they would need. Comet studied the finer details of the traditional ceremonies, occasionally glancing at Cadence with concern.
The alicorn princess was growing weaker by the minute, her magic flickering like a candle in the wind. The shield surrounding the Empire briefly wavered, causing several crystal ornaments in the throne room to vibrate ominously.
"We need to hurry," Shining said, his voice tight with worry. "Tell me what you need us to do."
Comet met Twilight's eyes, and an unspoken understanding passed between them. Time was running out, and the fate of the Crystal Empire—perhaps all of Equestria—now rested on their ability to revive a thousand-year-old tradition before Cadence's strength failed completely.
"We're going to need every element of harmony working together on this," Comet said firmly. "Let's gather everyone and get to work."
The Crystal Faire was finally ready. Colorful banners fluttered in the gentle breeze, stalls lined the streets offering traditional Crystal Empire food and games, and the sounds of cheerful music filled the air. Comet Tail stood at the center of the square, checking off the last items on his list when something caught his eye.
Twilight Sparkle was using her magic to carry a large, glittering heart-shaped crystal and place it carefully on an ornate podium. The sunlight caught its facets, sending prismatic reflections dancing across the crystal buildings nearby. Comet trotted over to her, his brow furrowed in curiosity.
"What's this all about?" he asked, examining the crystal heart. It was beautifully cut, perfectly symmetrical, and about the size of a small pony.
Twilight beamed with pride. "The last page of the book mentioned a Crystal Heart as the faire's centerpiece," she explained, her horn glowing softly as she made a few final adjustments to the heart's position. "So I used my magic to cut one out of a crystal block I found in the palace storage. What do you think?"
Before Comet could answer, Braeburn trotted up to them, his hat tipped back and a satisfied smile on his face.
"We're all set!" Braeburn announced. "The games are ready, the crystal berries are being passed out, and Cheese Sandwich has set up some sort of spinning contraption that I'm pretty sure won't hurt anypony." He noticed the crystal heart and tilted his head. "What's this now?"
"It's the Crystal Heart," Twilight repeated. "According to the book, it's supposed to be the centerpiece of the Crystal Faire. I made it myself!" She looked particularly pleased with herself.
"Well, it sure is pretty," Braeburn said, admiring the craftsmanship. "You've got a real talent there, Twilight."
Comet nodded in agreement. "It looks authentic. The ponies will love it."
With everything in place, they made their way to the palace where Princess Cadence and Shining Armor were waiting. Twilight's brother looked exhausted but managed a smile when he saw them approaching.
"Everything's ready," Comet reported. "We can begin whenever you're ready, Your Highnesses."
Cadence nodded, her mane flowing ethereally despite her obvious fatigue. "Let's not waste any more time. I'll make the announcement."
The group proceeded to the palace balcony overlooking the main square. Below, crystal ponies were already gathering, curious about the decorations that had appeared overnight. Cadence stepped forward, but it was clear she was conserving her strength for maintaining the protective shield. She nodded to Twilight, who stepped up to make the announcement.
"Hear ye, hear ye!" Twilight called out, her voice magically amplified. "Everypony is cordially invited to the revival of the Crystal Faire!"
As she began to elaborate on the traditional activities, a sudden blast from a flugelhorn interrupted her. Cheese Sandwich stood below, an enormous brass instrument at his lips and a manic grin on his face. Twilight shot him a withering look, and he slowly lowered the instrument, offering an apologetic shrug.
The crystal ponies began to file into the square, their coats dull and expressions hesitant. But as they engaged with the faire, something remarkable happened. One by one, their coats began to shimmer slightly, a faint sparkle appearing as if awakening from a long slumber.
"It's working," Comet whispered to Twilight. "Their magic is coming back."
Braeburn had taken up position near the crystal heart, greeting ponies and directing them to various attractions. Two crystal mares approached him, their eyes wide with wonder.
"Excuse me," one of them asked, her voice tinged with hope, "but is that the Crystal Heart?"
Braeburn nodded confidently. "Sure is! Wouldn't be the Crystal Faire without it, now would it?"
The librarian they had met earlier overheard this exchange and trotted over excitedly. "He's right, you know! The whole purpose of the Crystal Faire is to lift the spirits of the Crystal Ponies so the light within them can power the Crystal Heart, so that the Empire can be protected!" Her eyes sparkled with knowledge and pride. "King Sombra said he had hidden it somewhere nopony could find it for a thousand years. I'm so proud of you and your friends for finding it!"
Braeburn maintained his friendly smile, but behind it, his heart plummeted like a stone. "Well, thank you kindly," he managed. "If you'll excuse me for just one moment..."
As soon as the crystal ponies moved on, Braeburn galloped back to the podium where Twilight's crystal heart sat. Without hesitation, he grabbed a blue cloth from a nearby stall and threw it over the heart, concealing it completely.
Comet Tail, who had been chatting with some crystal ponies about their traditions, noticed Braeburn's suspicious behavior and trotted over.
"What in Equestria are you doing?" Comet asked, bewildered.
Braeburn pulled him close, his voice a harsh whisper. "We've got a problem, partner. That librarian just told me that the Crystal Heart isn't just some fancy decoration – it's a magical relic that protects the entire Empire!" His green eyes were wide with panic. "This ain't the real Crystal Heart; it's just Twilight's arts and crafts project!"
Comet's blood ran cold. "Are you certain?"
"As sure as apples grow on trees," Braeburn replied grimly. "She said Sombra hid the real one where nopony could find it for a thousand years."
Without another word, Comet galloped toward the palace, his mind racing faster than his hooves. He found Twilight, Shining Armor, and Cadence inside, with Cadence looking more exhausted by the minute.
"We have a serious problem," Comet announced, trying to keep his voice steady. "The crystal heart that Twilight made – it's not what we thought."
Twilight frowned. "What do you mean?"
"The Crystal Heart isn't just a centerpiece for the faire," Comet explained rapidly. "According to the librarian, it's a powerful magical relic that protects the entire Empire. It channels the positive energy from the crystal ponies to create a protective barrier against threats like Sombra."
"But... nothing in the book said anything about the Crystal Heart being a relic," Twilight protested, her eyes widening with horror.
She quickly retrieved the history book and flipped to the last page she had read. Examining it more closely, she noticed something she had missed before – ragged edges at the binding.
"The last few pages," she whispered. "They were torn out."
Just as the words left her lips, Princess Cadence gasped and collapsed to the floor. The strain of maintaining the protective shield had finally become too much. Shining Armor rushed to her side, but it was too late – outside, the magical dome that had been protecting the Crystal Empire began to flicker and fade.
In the distance, beyond the Empire's borders, a dark shadow moved against the snow. A deep, malevolent chuckle echoed as King Sombra watched the shield disintegrate. His red eyes gleamed with triumph as tendrils of black smoke began to reach toward the now-vulnerable Crystal Empire.
Comet Tail's face hardened with determination as he looked at his friends. "We need to find the heart," he said urgently. "The real Crystal Heart. Quickly."
