Chapter I
Peter B. Parker wasn't sure what he should get Lady Sif for their one-month anniversary. At first, he thought about maybe buying her some flowers and chocolates, but that just felt cliche. He wanted to give the goddess of the hunt and harvest something special, something she couldn't get anywhere on Asgard. Something that came from the heart. He pondered this conundrum for a good long while before at last the metaphorical lightbulb went off.
He knew exactly what he wanted to get his give girlfriend for their one-month anniversary. After making up his mind and sending a brief smile towards the sky, he swung back home to his apartment and the sought out what he was looking for. It didn't take him long either as he found it stashed away in an old shoebox he was keeping in the closet. He held it gently in both hands and smiled at the nostalgia gazing upon it brought. "This'll be perfect."
He found a small box to package his gift in and carefully wrapped it up with some leftover wrapping paper from last Christmas. He also made sure to toss something else in before he did so. With his gift now secure he tossed his civilian clothes aside to reveal the superhero garb underneath. Tight red and blue spandex covered him from head-to-toe and decorating the red of his costume was a black spiderweb pattern. Completing his look was a small black spider symbol on his chest to accompany the large red one on his back.
"Look out Asgard, here comes Spider-Man." he spoke to himself before grabbing the gift and wall crawling his way through his apartment's skylight. The last time he paid Asgard a visit was when he and the Avengers were celebrating Thor's engagement to Jane Foster. It was a great party and Sif had even given him a limited use amulet that would allow him to teleport to her realm to see her since she hardly ever left her post as one of Odin's shield maidens.
Once was on the roof; he pulled the amulet from his hidden belt and held it up towards the sky. He said the magic words and in a bright flash of lightning he was suddenly transported across spacetime to Aagard. Teleporting always left him feeling strange. He explained that to Thor once and described the feeling as being warm on the outside and cold on the inside as if he'd just been microwaved. Black Widow also agreed.
"Well... looks like I made it." He said aloud. This definitely looked like the inside of the Royal Palace of Valaskjalf.
Meanwhile on the other side of royal palace, Lady Sif was in a very similar boat. She didn't really know what she should get Peter for their one-month anniversary either. She was still fairly new to Midgard and what it had to offer so it was difficult to find a gift that would leave her feeling satisfied. This must've shown on her face because Balder and Brunnhilde both asked her if she was troubled.
She didn't want to admit it, even to her friends, but she was indeed troubled. Being who they were the brave and the Valkyrie offered their assistance. The shield maiden really appreciated that and told them what was bothering her. Today was her and Peter's one-month anniversary and she had no clue what to give him since he would be by soon with a gift of his own.
Balder and Brunnhilde look at each other for a moment before breaking out in fits of laughter. This completely through Lady Sif for a loop as she hadn't expected boisterous laughter to her plight. It honestly left her feeling more than a little annoyed and it showed with the crossing of her arms and scowl on her face. "It is good to know that my woes amuse you so."
"Apologies Sif, but your situation is fairly amusing. Especially since the answer to your troubles is so easily remedied." Brunnhilde spoke through her laughter. This caused Lady Sif to quirk an eyebrow in confusion at the giggling blonde. What did she mean that her problem was easily remedied?
Sensing her confusion, Balder decided to pick up where Brunnhilde left off. "What she means to say is your problem is not as complex as you make it seem. You like the man of spiders, and he likes you. You don't need the most exquisite trinket in all the realm, just the one that comes from you."
"Just the one that comes from me." She repeated as the warrior nodded. Perhaps Balder and Brünnhilde were right. She didn't need the most extravagant gift in the realm, just something that came from her, something from the heart as it were. But what did she have that was... that's when it hit her. She knew exactly what to give Peter for their one-month anniversary. "Thank you both. I now know what I must-"
She was interrupted by a very small flicker of energy coming from the sword sheathed at her hip. Being ever curious the Pegasus rider asked, "What was that?"
"Peter's here." She answered. She tried not to let her surprise show, but her eyes widened ever so slightly. Her boyfriend was here, and she hadn't grabbed his gift yet. Of all the rotten luck. "I need you both to find him and distract him until I return."
"We can do that." Balder smiled before watching as Sif took off down the hall towards her quarters. He then turned to Brunnhilde who was ready and willing to assist her friend in need. "I do not need it ask if you are ready, do I?"
As the two Asgardians prepared to run interference, Lady Sif returned to her chambers and quickly ran towards her dresser. Inside was exactly what she was looking for and she eyed it was a small smile gracing her lips. As she traced a finger along it, she knew this was exactly what she wanted to gift to Peter. She gripped it tight and grabbed a red ribbon from another drawer in her room. This was a gift that truly came from the heart.
After tying it up, she looked herself over in the mirror attached to her drawer. Her raven black hair was straight, her red and silver armor was polished, and she was free of any blemishes or boils, not that she'd ever had any before. She took a deep breath and sprinted from her chambers, gift in hand.
By the time she found Peter he was seated on the wall politely listening to Balder and Brunnhilde recount stories of past glory from the battlefield. She really did have the best friends a warrior could ask for, and a very patient boyfriend as well. She fake coughed into her fist to catch their attention and the two took this as their cue to bid the pair quick farewell.
Peter jumped down to the floor making sure to keep a hold of his gift as he did. He waved the warrior and Valkyrie goodbye as Lady Sif walked up to him. "I hope their tales of battles past didn't bore you too much."
"Bore me...?" Peter chuckled. He actually liked hearing the different stories the warriors of Asgard had to tell. Honestly, they were all worthy of comic books and cinema. "Nah, I don't mind hearing their stories."
"You are a saint, truly." She joked. She was getting much better at doing that, making jokes. She looked down at her gift and Peter did the same with his own. "It's good to see you."
"Likewise." He smiled beneath his mask as he had to crane his neck up slightly to meet her gaze. He then held out his gift for her to take. "Happy anniversary."
"Happy anniversary to you as well." The shield maiden smiled as she also extended her gift from him to take. Both individuals accepted the other's gift and since hers wasn't boxed up it was easy for Peter to see what it was.
"A war horn." Peter noticed. It was curved similar to a banana only made out of wood and leather. There was also a symbol engraved on the side. He carefully traced his fingers along the wood and saw just how well maintained it was.
"It was given to me by Odin himself after my very first battle as one of his shield maidens. I've taken great care to maintain it over the millennia and it also means a great deal to me. Which is why I want you to have it." Lady Sif explained.
"Wow..." Was all Peter could really say. He could tell from the way she spoke and how well maintained the horn was after a thousand years that it really did mean a lot to her. Also, it was easy to forget that his girlfriend was over thousand years old when she honestly looked like she was in her mild twenties. "I don't know what to say. This is incredible and I can tell how much it means to you. I'll make sure to take care of it just as much as you have."
Hearing that declaration put her more at ease. She didn't doubt for a second that Peter would treasure and maintain the horn. "Thank you." She then set her sights on Peter's gift that was wrapped up tight. She tore the wrapping paper free and opened the box housed within to find something that gave her pause.
An even smaller box of blue and silver with white writing on the front and the symbol for an arrow. On the sides there were multiple holes, slides and buttons, and in the center was a clear window that gave a good view of the mechanical insides. Also inside the box was some sort of device she'd seen the mortal known as Hawkeye use once, headphones he called them, and another even smaller box with a picture and writing on it. "What is this?"
"That is a Sony Walkman TPS-L2." Peter explained. "The other things inside are headphones and cassette."
"Cassette?" She asked confusedly as she held up the cassette.
"It's music." The spider themed her elaborated further. He did his best to explain what a Walkman was and how it worked. He demonstrated for her by plugging in the headphones and showing her how to open it up and insert the tape. He pressed the play button as soon the Asgardian warrior found her ears flooded by a sound unlike anything she'd ever heard before. There was music and beautiful singing, but no instruments or people present. It was all coming from the cassette tape inside the small rectangular cube. What kind of sorcery was this?
Eventually Peter paused the track so Sif could hear him again and she looked at him with awe. "This is beautiful."
"Yeah, though back home ABBA is an acquired taste. Uncle Ben like listening to them though, so does Aunt May. This used to be his." He'd long since told Sif about his origins and how one moment of supreme selfishness cost the man who helped raise him his life. He was the one who taught him that with great power there must also come great responsibility and is the main reason why he was the hero he was today. "I want to give this to you."
"Peter...?" She couldn't possibly-
"No, I want to give you this." He continued, gently placing the device in her hands. "I love you, and I know you'll take good care of it. I trust you with a little piece of him, and a little piece of me too."
She held the old technology close to her heart and promised him she would treat it with the very same care she treated her horn with. "You have my word."
"That means a lot." Peter smiled. Sif couldn't help but smiled to. She reached out to web slinger and gently ran her armored hand down his mask before fining the hem. Peter let her lift it just above his mouth and nose, giving her a good view of his warm smile. Both parties gazed into the other's eyes before leaning in and sharing a long and passionate kiss.
"Happy anniversary, Sif."
"Happy anniversary, Peter."
END!
