Sitting around the campfire with marshmallow sticks in hand, Dawn broke the silence.
"I haven't seen Marc this trip."
"Yeah." Steven replied, grabbing some graham crackers. "He has a thing about camping."
"Why would he agree to this trip if he doesn't like camping?"
Steven paused once his s'more was complete "because you said it was for Father's Day."
Dawn let her marshmallow catch on fire then refused the completed s'more Steven offered.
"Well… it was, yeah. But I wanted to spend time with all you guys. Even Layla. Why isn't she here?"
"She wanted you to spend Fathers Day with us."
Dawn stuttered "but, but I didn't spend Mothers Day with her! That's not fair! I'm… that's such a dick move! What kind—"
She felt a hand on her shoulder for support.
"Calm down, Dawn." The man shook his head "you wanted to go on this trip so you wouldn't be upset on Fathers Day. Now look at you."
"At least I'm not at home watching TV. Every year we would watch my dads favourite movie. Stand By Me. Not the cheeriest movie… but… he loved it. If I was at home I'd probably end up watching it and crying my eyes out."
Jake huffed "so that's why you chose camping. I was trying to figure it out. It's so you'd be off the grid and not able to watch the movie."
Dawn smiled "yhatzee."
