Thank you for pointing it out everyone!

The heat was, per usual, near unbearable. Shikaku had made numerous trips to Sunagakure before, he was no stranger to the environment of the desert but, the heat was always the worst part. Which is why, from a tactical standpoint, he believed Suna would be the hardest village to attack. The intense heat would ultimately wear down any opposing force much quicker than battle.

The strong gusts of wind sent massive sandstorms throughout the area. Another tactical advantage for village in the sand. Much like the mist for Kirigakure, the sandstorms gave such a natural cover that it could prove extremely difficult to locate the village within the desert.

Shikaku was glad that Sunagakure and the Kazekage were not their enemy anymore. They proved to be a very strong ally for Konoha, in both economic and military matters.

"Master Shikaku Nara." Floating down on a cloud of sand, the Kazekage called out to him. "Please excuse my sudden appearance."

"Lord Kazekage? This can't be good if you're coming out here to meet me." Shikaku pulled his hood back. "What's going on?"

The Kazekage outstretched his hand and helped the Jōnin Commander up onto the sand cloud. "You're correct, commander, this isn't good." The cloud levitated higher, flying off towards the setting sun. "But before we get into the reason you've come to Suna, there is a small matter we need to discuss."

Shikaku was no fool. "It's Naruto, right?"

The Kazekage nodded, not surprised by the man's deduction skills. "Yes. He came to me a two nights ago, begging me to get you to come to Suna. He said you were the only person he could trust."

"Well, I'm flattered by that. I barely know the kid."

"Master Shikaku, what is the meaning in all this? I need answers to what is going on."

"There is something else going on, Kazekage." Shikaku stated, covering his eyes from the sand. "Danzō has had his own agenda for years, he's even said so himself. What I don't understand is why he would single out Naruto like this."

Gaara pondered his next question carefully. "And what makes you believe that the Hokage is plotting something? Was he not chosen to be your Hokage for a reason?"

"Whatever that reason was, I can't imagine being a good one."

Shikaku's trust issue with Danzō would never be questioned. He knew with all his heart, mind, and soul that Danzō Shimura could not ever be trusted.

"My question for Naruto, you did not answer."

"Because I don't know either, Lord Kazekage. I'm hoping Naruto can shed some light on this."

"...Very well."

Gaara controlled his sand into a slow descent. They were approaching the furthest most point away from Suna, an unmanned outpost in the southwestern part of the desert. There were no signs of no one being anywhere near this place in years, or within miles. Isolation was key.

Both the shinobi leapt off the sand cloud as it disappeared.

"Where's Naruto?" Shikaku questioned.

"This is where I told him to be." Gaara stated. "I am surprised he is not here. I would have expected him to be waiting for us."

"I have been."

The, now, rouge shinobi leapt down from the tower. Sand dust created a circle around him. "Thank you for coming, Master Shikaku."

"Why are you covered in sand, Naruto?" Gaara questioned.

"I was meditating." There wasn't must else to say. What else was he supposed to do for two days?

"Naruto, tell me what in the hell happened out there? How did it come to this?"

The jinchūriki pulled his hood back. "Your guess is as good as mine. Danzō assigned me the mission to hunt down and eliminate Killer B, the Eight Tails Jinchūriki. Sasuke got to him before I could. Luckily, I was able to save them both before they were taken into custody by Chōza and the others."

"Sasuke Uchiha? Why would he be there with the Eight Tails?"

"...Currently, he and the rest of his team are affiliated with the Akatsuki. He was tasked to capture the Eight-Tails."

A deep sigh of annoyance from the Nara. "The apple doesn't fall fair from the tree, eh?"

"Why would Sasuke align himself with the same group his elder brother defected to?" Gaara questioned. "I would have thought he would refuse to have anything to do with Itachi."

"I assume he's using the Akatsuki for support against Danzō. He wants to kill him for revenge on Itachi and the Uchiha clan."

"Why would Sasuke have a vendetta against the Hokage?"

"Like I said, Kazekage, there's more going on here." Shikaku chimed in. "So, you know the truth about the massacre, then?"

"Truth?" Naruto questioned. "From what I've been able to piece together, Danzō somehow backed Itachi into a corner and forced him to slaughtering their clan. He wants revenge on him and the two other elders."

"Koharu and Homura?" Shikaku questioned. "I wasn't aware they were apart of it."

"Apparently so. I'm not fully aware of the details but that's what I've been able to figure out." Naruto cracked his stiff neck, meditating for long periods of time made his body unbearably stiff. "Has Danzō said anything to you about my betrayal?"

"I was there when he received word of your actions. I'm sure the formal announcement was today." Shikaku stroked his beard in thought. "Be clear with me, Naruto. Is there any lie to what Danzō has said?"

"...Technically, no."

"So, in the terms written out by the Konoha regulation, you are by definition a traitor and deserter." Shikaku sighed again. "By law, Danzo had full right to excommunicate you."

"There's nothing we can do?" Naruto questioned.

"Whatever we do, we need to keep it quiet." Shikaku surmised. "Danzō likes to keep close tabs on those he doesn't trust. And I promise you, I am at the top of that list."

Gaara was not sure what to do in this situation. There were many variables he needed to consider before saying a single word. He did not want to cause any sort of tension between Suna and Konoha, yet he could not abandon his friend in this time of need. But he had to look out for Sunagakure first.

"Both of you, I need you to listen to me." Gaara was stern and brash, using the power of his title to carry weight in his voice. "Give me a good reason to help you both. I need solid evidence that Danzō is doing something wrong."

The pair of Konoha shinobi glanced between each other, wondering what to say.

"Physical evidence on Danzō will be impossible to get. He covers his tracks better than anyone." Shikaku stated. "Which is not great, but there are certain eyewitness accounts that have told me their stories. The main witness is Jiraiya of the Sannin, Naruto's master. Jiraiya said there was something bad about Danzō that he didn't trust, I believe his words."

"I've been told my a few people myself what kind of man Danzō is. Those people I trust." Naruto remembered his conversations with Itachi, Nagato, and Konan. He trusted those 'criminals' more than Danzō as Hokage.

"Danzō has an agenda. Everything he does is for the good of himself, nothing else. Konoha will become a shell, a tool for his self-gain. Whatever his plan is, we must stop it." Shikaku believed with everything he had that Danzō would show his true colors and turn on everyone. "Lord Kazekage, we need your help to stop him before it's too late."

Again, the Kazekage paused. He had many things to consider. "For the safety of my village and my people, I will not forsake the peace that has been established between Suna and Konoha based on the beliefs you two have about your Hokage. But I trust you both. You would not say such things without cause. Which is why I will tell you this."

The winds shifted with the telling of history.

"The Kazekage lineage started as a monarch. The Second, and Third Kazekages were direct decedents of the First Kazekage. In the wanning months of the Third Great War, my father, who many considered the reason why the village survived, grew tired of the Third's decision making and lack of leadership. My father knew of the old ways and challenged the Third Kazekage to a dual over the seat of Kazekage, a dual my father won. That's how my father became Fourth Kazekage, which set up myself and my siblings to be next in line."

"Challenged for the seat of Kazekage? I never knew such a rule existed." Shikaku said. "What is this rule called?"

"Agni Kai. When the Great Villages were being created, the original Kage created the Agni Kai rule to allow others who were dissatisfied to push for change or a way to force out a Kage that would not give up their authority."

"All the villages follow this rule?" Naruto questioned.

Gaara nodded. "Yes. Even today, if someone challenged me to an Agni Kai, I would have to engage."

"Why is this not more known? They never taught us this in the Academy."

"Because people would abuse this rule." Shikaku easily surmised. "They would challenge a Kage for nearly every decision, questionable or not. And I can't imagine it's a well-liked tradition among the Kage."

"I am not a fan of the idea, I can say. But it was agreed upon decades ago, we, as Kage, can't change it."

Shikaku sighed. "Why are you telling us this?"

"If you have so much distrust for your Hokage, do something about it. This very situation is the reason why the Agni Kai rule was created. You are the Jonin Commander and Konoha's master strategist. You have more loyalty than you realize." Gaara noticed the position of the sun. "We are out of time, Shikaku. If you do not arrive in Suna soon, they will send out a search party. If you'd like, we can discuss this further after our meeting with my advisors. But for now, this is where we leave Naruto."

A sand cloud formed above them.

"This cloud will take you just outside Suna's main entrance. You must get going."

"What about you, Lord Kazekage?" Shikaku pulled himself up onto the flying platform.

"I am a mere clone. The real Kazekage is back in the village, he'll be waiting for you."

"What's your plan, Naruto? You can't stay in the desert forever."

"I will discuss Naruto's next move and relay it to the real Gaara. You will be informed."

Realizing the Kazekage's hasty demeanor, Shikaku knew it was time to leave. He understood Gaara's reluctance to help them. This wasn't simple. This was a decision that would change history and reignite the flames of war.

But Shikaku was willing to take that chance to stop Danzō.

"We'll be in touch, Naruto."

The sand platform floated off into the distance, leaving to the friends alone in the tower.

"Tell me the truth, Naruto. You owe me that much for the secret I just gave you."

The jinchūriki nodded.

"Do you believe that Danzō is as radical as Shikaku believes? Do you think that what he says is something we need to fear?"

"...We've been told..."

"No. Do you believe it? I want to know what you think, Naruto."

Pausing, Naruto considered his next words carefully. "...A few months back, I ran into Sasuke when he was looking for Itachi. We ended up working together to find him. I talked to Itachi before Sasuke came in. Itachi was the first one to tell me that Danzō couldn't be trusted and had an agenda."

"Itachi Uchiha is a traitor and murdered his entire clan. He was the one that captured me. Why would you trust him?"

"Because Itachi made a promise to his mom to protect me. If it weren't for that promise, I would not be here. Itachi saved me back during our mission to save you from the Akatsuki. There is a narrative out there that has been hidden and locked away, Gaara. I believe Danzō is the key to that. Good or bad, Danzō is major player that will have to be dealt with eventually."

"What do you mean? You and Shikaku have been very cryptic about this, it's making it very difficult to fully trust you."

"Gaara...I understand how this looks. You have a village to protect. You should be skeptical. Hell, I'm skeptical if I'm doing the right thing. The only thing I know is that I've been told by multiple people that I trust that Danzō cannot be someone we let have power. He has his own agenda, whether that includes Konoha or not. Please trust me enough to figure everything out."

"And with that piece of information I gave you and Shikaku, do you intend to act on it? Are you going to fight Danzō for the seat of Hokage to restore your name? Because this is what will happen if you beat him. You will replace him as the Sixth Hokage."

"...It's not about restoring my name. If I have to face Danzō in an Agni Kai to help save Konoha, or others, by becoming Hokage, as much as I don't want to be Hokage, I'll do it. That destiny, the prophecy, I have to follow through on that for my master. He believed so much that I am the one who can bring about change. I'm not sure how I'll be able to do that...but I'm not gonna stop until I do."

A strong vote of confidence for the Kazekage. Gaara believed in Naruto. He would never stop. Hearing the resolve and determination reignited his belief in Naruto.

"Without the protection of a village, your goal will be hard to achieve. Impossible even. Are you prepared for that?"

"If the world chooses to become my enemy...I will fight like I always have." Naruto reached out and shook Gaara's hand. "I'll be seeing you, Lord Kazekage."

Gaara smirked. "Likewise."

-In Konoha, Hokage's Office-

"I'm glad to see your recovery has been successful." Danzō fiddled with the bandage over his eye. "Having you back in our ranks is a huge advantage, Neji Hyūga."

The Hyūga prodigy bowed with respect and grace. "Thank you, sir."

"Now, there is a mission I need you to lead. Let's call it a redo after the last one you led." Danzō handed over the dossier. "I assume you've heard the news about your friend, Naruto Uzumaki."

"...I have. If I can speak freely, sir, there is something interesting about his 'betrayal'." Neji understood Naruto and he believed that he didn't desert Konoha.

"I agree with you, Neji. But he left before an explanation could be given. I understand that Naruto is a friend of yours, and he's been rather favorable in some of the public lately due to his war heroics, which is why I'm giving you this mission as a grace. Assemble a team, find Naruto Uzumaki, and bring him in with the least amount of force possible. Do not cause any unnecessary injury."

Given the gaps in strength, Neji would be a very large team with varying abilities and tactics to achieve that. "Is there a limit on team members, sir?"

"Whoever you can muster up, Neji. My only recommendation is to bring Sai. He is well-versed in taking down targets without causing injury."

"Noted, sir."

"I would also advise bringing a medical shinobi. Uzumaki has considerable strength. Two would be the appropriate number."

"I have a shinobi in mind."

Danzō saw that coming and it made the most logical sense. She understood their adversary the most. "Very well. I'm sure she'll accept. Now, get moving. You leave in two days. Details are in the briefing folder."

The Hyūga prodigy bowed and exited the office.

"One more thing, Neji." Danzō called out to his subordinate. "There is a Five Kage Summit coming up in the Land of Iron. We will be discussing the terms to end the war. It's been...speculated to me by my top informants that Sasuke Uchiha could make an appearance there to try and eliminate me. His need for revenge has been passed on to me for whatever reason I cannot fathom."

Neji waited in the doorway. "Sasuke? Why would you believe that Sasuke is trying to kill you?"

"My hunch is that Sasuke Uchiha is being manipulated into thinking I am his next target. By whom, I don't know. There seems to be more to this puzzle. Regardless, Naruto assisted in Sasuke's escape before and did it again here the other day. My advice to you for this mission: find Sasuke Uchiha and you'll find Naruto Uzumaki, and vice versa."

For Danzō to suggest something like that, it was more than just a hunch. He was telling Neji something without saying it. Neji took note of that.

More pieces to the puzzle? What more could there be to this?

"Mr. Haruno, Lord Sixth will see you now." The secretary called out.

Exiting the office, Neji's first stop was the messenger tower. He needed an expedited message sent to Suna to get his chosen medical shinobi here as fast as possible. There were many qualified medical shinobi in Konoha currently that could handle this kind of mission, but none of them had the knowledge that she did. She relationship with their target was just as important as her medical ninjutsu.

Once he completed the task, he was on to finding the others he needed for the mission. Shikamaru, Ino, and Chōji were obvious choices. Tenten and Lee were two he trusted the most, they'd follow his lead to the ends of the Earth. And he needed a tracker, someone other than him that could scout ahead and follow tracks.

Kiba...

Neji may not have been close to the Inuzuka, yet he was still saddened by his passing. Kiba was a good comrade and friend to his cousin. Kiba will be missed.

A strange sensation carried Neji towards the hospital. At first, he was unsure as to why. None of the shinobi he wanted for this mission were here. Yet, upon arrival, he found the person he unknowingly wanted to speak to.

A very pregnant Tsunade turned to the Hyūga jonin. "Neji Hyūga. A welcomed surprise."

"Lady Hokage..."

"Please, just call me Tsunade. I'm not Hokage anymore." The woman let out a exasperated sigh. "What can I do for your, Neji?"

"...Ma'am, I'm not entirely sure why I'm here. I just...there is something you should know, I suppose."

"You've been tasked with going after Naruto."

Speechless, Neji could only stare blankly. This is a Sannin, of course she knew.

"Come with me. We can talk."

-Hokage's Office-

"Take a seat, Mr. Haruno. It's an honor to meet the father of our esteemed Sakura Haruno."

"Thank you, sir. Yes, I'm very proud of Sakura and her accomplishments. She's truly my inspiration."

The Hokage relaxed into his chair, reading the briefing for this requested visit. "So, you want to discuss one Naruto Uzumaki, correct?"

"Yes sir. He is a menace and needs to be locked away." Kizashi brushed his bread with his hand. "There have no consequences for the murders he's committed including my wife and her sister."

Danzō is acutely aware of their deaths and who was realistically responsible, yet he felt no need to correct the man. "Kizashi, are you aware of Uzumaki's current status?"

Perplexed, Kizashi leaned forward. "What do you mean?"

"Naruto Uzumaki has been labeled a traitor and a deserter. I gave him that official designation yesterday."

Standing in utter shock, Kizashi could not be more ecstatic. "He's gone?! That demon is really gone!"

Danzō held up his hand. "Not exactly, Kizashi. Yes, I've put those labels on him. But he has not explained his actions. I'm willing to grant him a second chance if he can give me the truth. Konoha cannot afford the loss of her biggest asset in battle without just cause."

"Oh, not you too!" Kizashi groaned. "You sound like Tsunade!"

"I understand your grief with Naruto, but there is law we have to follow." Danzō stated. "Tsunade and I were misaligned on many issues. But one thing we agreed on was due process. Everyone has a chance to prove innocence."

"Then why label him a traitor, sir?"

"A method to the madness, I would say." Danzō said. "It will be easier for him to be brought in and questioned under that label rather than a shinobi who is seeking asylum, which I assume he will try under Sunagakure."

Kizashi was a bit confused. "Isn't the sand village our friends now? And do you mean seeking asylum? Naruto would go hide in another village?"

An inward sigh. Explaining international politics to a civilian was not something he enjoyed as Hokage.

"Suna and Konoha have a treaty of peace and cooperation for this great war we've been involved in, yes. But now, Suna will be at a crossroads if Naruto decided to use his relationship with the Kazekage as leverage to hide there to figure something out. By law, they would be harboring a fugitive if he stayed there, which is against our treaty. Suna can't afford to lose our trade, military power, or medical treatment of your daughter. The Kazekage knows this, and I believe will not forsake that."

Kizashi was not as knowledgeable on politics between the other villages as other people, mostly because those issues didn't interest him. There was no desire for him to understand those issues.

"So, what does that mean for Naruto? Is he being brought to justice or not?"

"In due time, Kizashi. But, if you are unsatisfied with how things are going, you can start a movement. Petition for others to follow your example. It is your right as a citizen to voice your opinions and organize rallies to gather support. Others may feel the same."

An idea that crossed his mind before yet there had been no action. Now, it seemed Danzō was pushing him into a direction, almost giving him the permission to follow through on the idea. "...I see."

"Thank you stopping by, Kizashi. I wish this could continue but I have other meetings to attend." Danzō made his slow walk to the door. "You can let yourself out."

"Thank you for your time, Lord Danzō."

-With Neji and Tsunade-

"Why is it you come to me, Neji?" Tsunade questioned, easing herself into her desk chair. "I have nothing to do with this mission."

"I understand that, ma'am. I just..."

"You've done a tremendous job uncovering the secrets of that artificial arm with the Research Division. Your insight has opened endless possibilities for medical treatments with patients of missing limbs and incurable diseases."

"Thank you, Lady Tsunade. I appreciate the kind words, but I'm not entirely sure why I've come to you." The Hyūga was struggling with his words. "I feel this mission is going to change things."

The Sannin was intrigued by that. "In what way? With your friends?"

"Possibly, but I believe whatever happens will have more...ramifications on a grand scale." Neji wasn't sure on what exactly, but he could not shake this feeling that there was something in the works. "I just feel this...swing coming, and it's going to change everything."

"This feeling of change...it has to do with Naruto. And you came to me because I'm the closest person to Naruto that's still inside the village." A slight nod from the Hyūga. She had hit the nail on the head. "Look Neji...I can't speak for Naruto or what he's doing. That is something I have never been able to do. No one has. Whatever is going on is entirely on him."

"I'm not looking for someone to blame, ma'am. I'm hoping...I really don't know what I'm hoping for." Neji sighed, standing from his chair. "Perhaps this was not as fruitful as I was expecting. Thank you for your time, Lady Tsunade. I hope your birth is smooth."

Tsunade rubbed her engorged belly: she knew it would not be smooth. "These feelings of change...you aren't the only one that's felt them." She adjusted herself in her chair as Neji sat back down. She was really starting to hate the end of pregnancy; she could not be more uncomfortable. "There is something in the air. Something is coming. I've just chopped it up to a new mother's paranoia. But you coming to me and talking about it as well makes me realize that it's not just my anxiety. There is something coming."

Neji quickly sat back down. "What do you think is happening? You would know more than anyone else, you are a former Hokage."

Tsunade chuckled. "You flatter me. I may be the Fifth Hokage, but I was stripped of all my security clearances, and I no longer have access to the Hokage Library. You lose those perks when you're removed from the job. I know no more than you do. You, actually, know more than I do, probably."

An interesting piece of information. A look behind the curtain of the highest position in the village. "I just don't understand. I've never been one to question things. Everything happens for a reason, yet nothing about this seems like it should be happening. There is just something off."

"Did your feeling start after learning that Naruto was a traitor?"

"...That cannot be it." Neji refused to believe there was a correlation.

"It's an odd thing, I agree. But Naruto and traitor in the same sentence just does not sound right." Tsunade would never believe he did something that heinous of his own free will.

Neji could see where the Sannin was taking this. "You think it's a fluke. There's more to it."

"Don't you?" She said with a smirk.

"...There must be. Naruto would never betray the village, at least not without a good reason."

"It must be a damn good reason."

"When I return, I'll come tell you." Neji stood to leave. "Or he can come tell you himself."

-With Naruto-

There was no direction for him to go. Naruto had nowhere to go. No village. No home. For the first time in his life, Naruto truly had nothing. Nothing but the clothes on his back.

What do I do? There are still a few weeks until that summit, so I gotta keep a low profile. I shouldn't be wandering around; someone will definitely want to capitalize on my new label.

"Nothing you can't handle. Let low lives try and take that bounty."

That's not the point. I don't need the attention. I need to move in the shadows.

"Then I believe it is now for you to go home."

Naruto physically stopped moving, hiding in the shade of a tree. I can't go home. I'm a deserter. What are you talking about?

"The birthplace of your clan, of your mother. I suggest you head to the Land of Eddies. Geologically, it makes the most sense. You'll be hidden in a forgotten land, and you are a simple run across the water to the Land of Iron through the Land of Hot Springs. No one would think to look for you there."

Taking out his map, which was Jiraiya's old map for his spy network, found the forgotten land of his mother's home. He had some ground to cover, mainly the entirety of the Land of Fire. But surprisingly, Kurama was right. The distance to the Land of Iron was not as far if he cut up through the ocean and the Land of Hot Springs.

Alright then. Let's go home, Kurama.

-Days later-

Naruto waited until the sun peaked over the horizon, giving him the beautiful sunrise as he crossed the water to the lone island. The sea air was brisk, blowing his cloak open as he walked in open water. Even from his distance, Naruto could see the abandoned parts hidden beneath vegetation and overgrown moss.

It felt like his first steps echoed; each crunch of sand seemed louder than the last. There was a resemblance of a path that led through a small mountainous range, Naruto surmised that this used to be the main route of the land. Once he came to main village, he was overcome by a strong emotion.

What is this feeling?

This was where is mom was born, where she played as a child. The stories his mother could talk about this place, the secrets that were lost with time and death. The streets were devastated with rubble and dust, not been moved for decades.

"I don't feel...right. This place...I can feel the..."

"You feel it too, young one."

Turning sharply, an old man appeared suddenly behind Naruto. His hands hidden behind his long white hair and it seemed his body was bogged down by the heavy armor he was wearing.

"Who the hell are you?!" Naruto shouted. "Why'd you sneak up on me like that?!"

"Gotta have some entertainment every now and then." The man chuckled. "You made it too easy."

Naruto recovered quickly, keeping his guard up. "What are you doing in this place? Are you some drifter?"

"I should be asking you the same thing. This is my home after all." The man tapped his headband. "See?"

Naruto instantly recognized the swirl. It was the same symbol that was on every Konoha flak jacket. A legacy carried. "The crest of the Uzumaki...you are an Uzumaki."

The elderly Uzumaki moved towards an open area where there were some remaining embers. He motioned for the young Uzumaki to take a seat. He quickly obliged.

"I'm no mere Uzumaki...I was the leader of our beautiful clan." The elder smiled at the memories from lifetimes ago. "I pioneered our people to make new relationships with the outside world, to finally come out of isolation. It proved fruitful for awhile...until the end times." The elder was moved by the presence of such a young Uzumaki, it had been decades since he had last seen one. "...well, that's a story for another time."

The fire began to crackle and ignite, warming the makeshift camp. Taking in what was left of the village, Naruto realized just how long this man had been here. The rubble of the buildings were covered in dirt and moss. Birds and other animals freely roamed the area, not afraid of his presence.

"How long have you been here?"

"You may not know this about our clan, but we have deep respect for our elders. Warriors called every woman in our clan mother, because we raised our young together. Every older warrior, they called him grandfather. The point is we did everything together, like a family." The elder man explained. "I've been here...decades. It was not long after our clan's desecration I returned to the bodies."

Naruto could only imagine coming back to a family murdered. Sasuke would understand. "...What have you been doing here all this time, grandfather?"

"Safeguarding our ultimate secret and our home. Until I finally pass, I will not allow others to come in and take what is left." The man was tired of this mission. He wanted rest. "It's been a long time since I've seen another. It feels...no, never mind."

"It feels what?" He needed to know.

"...You feel familiar." The elder admitted. "I've encountered one of your bloodline before. Tell me, who were your parents? Your...mother was a member, wasn't she?"

There was a slow nod. Naruto reached for the knitted scarf on his belt. He moved his thumbs over the fabric, feeling a small connection to his mother. "Kushina...Her name was Kushina."

The elder's eyes widened, disbelief filling them. Memories of decades ago flooded his mind. Negations and meetings with his longtime ally that led to the agreement of the young girl's new life in Konoha and a promise of care by his own daughter. And it seems that promise was kept.

"The will of the Uzumaki lives on, as does Kushina's burden, within you."

Naruto looked away from his mother's gift. "Burden? Are you talking about the Nine-Tails? And how do you know my mom?"

The elder chuckled. "I am more perceptive than you realize, my boy. You see, decades ago, Konoha and I arranged a deal. An Uzumaki's strong life force is essential in keeping the Nine-Tails sealed away, no other can do it without sacrifice. And as my daughter's life was coming to an end, there had to be another. Kushina was chosen because she possessed a stronger variant of the Uzumaki's strong chakra, easily subduing the beast."

The elder sighed heavily: Naruto listened intently. "It was no easy decision to make. Her life would be changed forever and destined to be within Konoha walls for the rest of her days. I was...saddened that I sent two of my family to be there without us. It was supposed to be the highest honor and be treated as such."

"The people of Konoha didn't see like that." Naruto said bluntly.

"I'm sure they didn't. Shinobi from Konoha are kind and open, the villagers are different. Times change yet people stay the same."

A strange outlook that could easily be reversed. Naruto wouldn't argue with this man. Clearly, he had been around for a long time. And it was not lost on Naruto that he referred to Mito Uzumaki as his daughter.

"...Why are you here, my child? Why have you come to this place?"

The young Uzumaki sighed, fastening the scarf back to his belt loop. "Mainly to hide. I've been betrayed by the current Hokage. He's wrongly labeled me as a traitor. I'm waiting for the upcoming Five Kage Summit to confront him."

The elder was surprised. "A summit of the Kage? There hasn't been one of those since the end of the Second Great War. Bringing the end of the war, I take it?"

"Something like that. But I'm not buying it. There's something else going on that I need to stop, grandfather."

The elder nodded. "Yet, there is something you aren't telling me, son."

With age comes wisdom, I guess.

"You have no idea, boy."

Taking in a deep sigh, Naruto figured he could take in the rare occasion of talking to a relative. "...There's a prophecy that was told about me...by that older than dirt toad on Mount Myōboku. I'll either be the world's biggest asset for change or cause the next apocalypse, all based on the choices I make. I'm trying to do what my master wanted, to bring about peace, but I have no idea how. I've been the reason for nearly all jinchuriki captures with the Akatsuki, now there are only two. And the icing on the cake, my best friend is now a part of that same organization and wants to take revenge for his clan out on Konoha."

The elder listened intently. This was a bit more than he anticipated yet he was not surprised. He had heard of a young boy through the grapevine from his few trips to the mainland for supplies that was the jinchuriki of the vicious Nine-Tailed Fox demon was making a solid name for himself. His strength was unparalleled by his peers, and it seemed he was growing from the young demon boy that lived in his father's shadow to the strong shinobi of his own.

There was sense of grandfatherly pride in the elder man.

"It seems you a have a lot on your plate."

Naruto chuckled. "You have no idea."

The fire crackled, matching the setting sun. The Uzumaki of past and present listened to the fire and ambiance of the wilderness around them. It was comforting to be the presence of long-lost relatives; both had longed for their clansmen for years.

"...What do I do, grandfather? Every decision I make carries the weight of the world. I...can't keep this up."

The elder pondered deeply. There was much he did not know about this young Uzumaki. There were many experiences that led Naruto to, not only, believe this prophecy about him but also understood that it was all the choices he made, not just a singular one.

Such a young age with so much responsibility. He reminds me of Hashirama a bit.

"Son...I may be old and wise, but I do not know everything. I'm not sure there is much I can say that'll help you in your cause."

A long shot but disappoint still filled his eyes. Naruto just wanted someone to give him an answer. As per usual, there was no answer to this impossible question.

"...But there is one thing I can tell you."

Looking up, there was glimpse of hope in his eyes.

"Follow your heart and you can never go wrong. It's your guiding key, after all."

A familiar phrase. He's heard his godmother say that before to them before sending them on a mission.

"Is that saying an Uzumaki custom or something?" Naruto questioned. "My godmother would say that before sending us out on missions."

The elder smiled. "Not exactly, it was something I would say to my Mito to help guide her in life. It seems Mito passed that down to her own granddaughter. Funny how things work like that."

First, you will learn the truth about yourself...When you find your heart, you come to me.

There was deep, exhausted sigh.

Now I gotta follow my heart that I don't even know yet. Also, learn the truth about myself. Wonderful...just wonderful.

"...Is it okay if I stay here a while?"

"Do you have much of a choice?" The elder chuckled. "Son, this is your home. Stay as long as you need."

To that, Naruto smiled.

-Main Gate, Konoha-

Neji stood before his chosen team, awaiting the final member. She was coming, they would intercept.

"I understand this mission presents a certain challenge that none of us thought possible. I know we all have reservations about all this, and they will be voiced in due time. Right now, our mission is to capture Naruto Uzumaki and return him to Konoha for questioning to understand what happened. Lord Danzō will make the decision from there."

Shikamaru shifted over to his other foot. His father told him about all this prior to his leaving to Suna for a meeting with the Kazekage. There was no logical explanation for what was happening. And he knew Neji understood that as well.

"Please follow my orders. In my absence, please refer to Shikamaru as my second-in-command."

The lazy Nara simply lit a cigarette with his master's lighter, acknowledging the appointment.

"We will meet our medical shinobi enroute. She's coming from Sunagakure."

"Sakura's coming on this mission?!" Lee shouted with glee. Despite Sakura's lengthy relationship with their target, he was still head over heels for her. A crush that would never go away.

Tenten simply rolled her eyes at her teammate. Some things would never change.

"Yes, it's Sakura. She answered my request to join us."

"Don't you think it'll be a bit much for her?" Ino questioned, quelling her own feelings about this. "This is Naruto were talking about. She's pretty...well, you know."

"I am aware of the problems that may arise, but her medical experience and knowledge of our target are both invaluable. I trust her judgement, I'd expect the same from all of you." The Hyūga prodigy took at a quick glance towards his cousin. "Is that clear?"

There was a mixture of nods and grumbles of agreement. There was no question of trust with Sakura, she was the best and brightest of their class.

"But it's like Ino said, this is Naruto were talking about." Chōji chimed in.

"Are you implying something?" Sai quickly asked.

The large teen turned to the former ROOT member. "All I'm saying is that Sakura has gone against us before because of Naruto. Remember Tenchi Bridge? She nearly killed Hinata because she couldn't handle seeing her teammates fight."

"That was right after her mom died, Chōji. We all agreed to give her a pass on that." Shikamaru pointed out, blowing smoke out. "I think some time away cleared her head."

"We can only hope." Chōji sighed. "Sorry, I just...none of you saw what me and Lee did. We were there. He openly defied my dad and others' orders to surrender. He danced around all those ANBU like it was nothing. I just don't see how we're going to be able to stop him...especially if he's with Sasuke."

"Do you fear him that much, Chōji?"

Their medical officer approached from the road, her long pink hair flowing in the ponytail that reached the middle of her back.

Sakura marched right up to the Akimichi, staring him down like she was taller than him.

"Because I'm not. He's a good guy; he's saved our lives more times than any of us can count." Sakura faced the others. "Don't cast doubt on him now. This is where we can repay him for everything he's done for us."

The passionate words were loud and clear, loaded with conviction and determination. Yet not all were convinced by them.

"I know that Naruto is your boyfriend...or isn't...or whatever you guys are." Tenten began, ignoring her anxiety of speaking up. "But he betrayed us, both Lee and Chōji saw it happen. I trust what they saw over your gut feeling that he's somehow innocent."

"I'm not here to argue with you guys about him." Sakura fired back. "I'm simply saying give me the chance, just like we did with Sasuke when he defected."

"Yeah, that turned out so well."

Sakura glared at the large teen, who shrunk away. It seemed he feared her more than him.

"Alright." Shikamaru tossed the filter, having enough of this back and forth. "Clearly, we all have our disagreements on this. This mission will fail before we even take one step if we don't all get on the same page." He pulled out one more cigarette, lighting it quickly. "Say your transgressions now or don't say at all."

There was an awkward silence, none daring to be the first one to speak. The team glanced between each other, wondering who was going to be the first.

"...Are we so sure this is what we should be doing?" Sai said. "We have a mission. There should be nothing else we have to worry about. Our main concern is Naruto, then Sasuke by proxy."

"The mission is the reason for this, Sai. Were you not paying attention?" Shikamaru sighed. "Naruto isn't Sasuke. We can't compare what we did for him to what we're going to do for Naruto. Like Sakura said, he's saved more lives, including ours, than all of us combined. There isn't a discussion to be had was the point I was trying to make. I see that everyone understood that but you, Sai."

The Nara turned his attention on his Hyūga team leader, taking in another long drag. "Sorry, didn't mean to step on your toes."

"It's quite alright. Something had to be said." Neji stated. "Better they be upset with you rather than me."

Shikamaru smirked. "I get that."

Neji faced the fully assembled them. "Let's go. We've got a long mission ahead of us."

-Hokage's Office-

Night had fallen, only the streetlights of Konoha giving illumination. The sight was something that Danzō enjoyed. He thought lights throughout the village were the closest thing to beautiful he'd ever see, the view from the Hokage's office made it all the sweeter.

"It truly is a beautiful sight."

"Indeed, it is."

The only that could ever truly ruin a wonderful moment. "...Madara, what are you doing here?"

"We haven't seen each other since the Uchiha Incident. I figured it was time for a visit." The masked man stood on the other side of the desk as if he was shinobi receiving a mission.

"This is against our agreement." Danzo took a sip of his tea. "Using your abilities to freely enter the village will force me to break my end of the deal."

"That agreement died with Itachi. So, you can thank his kid brother that." Madara leaned against the desk. "Something you should know about our young Uchiha. He knows about what happened, he's coming for you."

The Warhawk hardly flinched. "He can certainly try."

"He's aiming for the Kage Summit. He'll be attacking there."

Again, there was barely a reaction. Yet, he was surprised by the Uchiha's boldness. "Come for me at the Summit? With the other Kage in attendance? Uchiha's are bold, not suicidal."

"It's calculated, not stupid." Madara stated. "Sasuke will have his revenge against you."

The Warhawk stood from his chair, looking at the Ghost directly in his eye. He was not afraid of the Sharingan. "You came here to tell me that an Uchiha hates me and wants me dead? That's hardly surprising."

Madara met the gaze of the Hokage. "No. I'm still trying to figure out your angle with the Nine-Tails. You sent him away. It'll be hard to take control of the Biju when he's not within your grasp."

"I'm Hokage and he broke code." Danzō stated. "He was a subordinate that went against orders, jinchuriki or not."

Madara chuckled. "Now you play by the rules? Your entire reputation is someone who operates outside the rules and regulations because you can't be bound by right and wrong. The Uchiha Massacre comes to mind."

"Control of the jinchūriki isn't within the cards yet. He's too powerful for his own good. Once I've pinpointed a weakness in the seal and exploit it, he'll be mine. Then, you'll have to face me for the beast. And I'll be much harder to kill than the Fourth Hokage."

Again, Madara chuckled. "You pale in comparison to the Fourth. Even with your enhancements...you'll never reach that kind of strength." The Ghost shook his head. "Frankly, I think that kid would be a better challenge than you would be. And probably harder to kill."

"You don't understand the abilities I now possess."

"I'm sure I understand fully." Madara turned away. "Our fated battle will happen. Until that time...goodbye, Danzō."

The vortex wrapped around the Ghost of Uchiha until he disappeared completely without a trace. Danzō waited for his response team to burst through the walls, windows, and door, but they never did. It seemed Madara was able to hide his chakra signature from his best sensors.

The Warhawk simply sat down in his chair, looking back out over the village.

We will be seeing each other again very soon, Madara. Ever since that day...I have made it my duty to stop you. And after all these years, now that I'm Hokage, I finally have the capability...your Eye of the Moon Plan will fail.
