Forrest glanced at his wife as he chewed on his lip. Rhajat was acting like she was in her own little world with her fist on her cheek. Which wasn't too out of the ordinary to be fair, but it still felt different. It wasn't like she was focusing on anything in particular, she was seemingly staring into space.
"Rhajat...? Is everything okay?"
Rhajat didn't respond, she just continued to stare. Forrest followed her eyes and looked at what she was looking at, just to make sure, and as he expected nothing was there. He wondered if his Aunt Corrin was around and she could somehow tell, but she didn't seem to be.
"Rhajat?"
Rhajat's eyes lazily moved towards Forrest. "Hm? Did you say something?"
"Yeah... Is something wrong?"
Rhajat clicked her tongue. "Ah." She looked like she wanted to say something. Yet at the same time she didn't. She exhaled in exasperation and lowered her head. "I..."
Forrest reached over and put a hand on Rhajat's free one. Rhajat looked up with widened eyes as a blush crept onto her face. In spite of how long they'd been married, she was still easy to fluster. Something Forrest enjoyed exploiting. He tilted his head and smiled softly at her.
"I won't make you talk about anything. Just know that I'm here for you."
Rhajat looked away again. She slowly moved her hand towards Forrest's wrist and grabbed it tightly. Her body tensed up, her heart threatening to pop out of her chest. She knew Forrest. She knew he wouldn't be angry with her. Yet in spite of that, she struggled to say what was on her mind. She wondered if this was how everyone felt when they were in her shoes. It was two simple words, yet her chest tightened at the idea of saying them. She couldn't help but feel a bit stupid for being unable to open her mouth. She wasn't even sure how either of them felt about this idea. The idea of raising a child together.
They had never really talked about it. In hindsight, that was a conversation they should've had long ago. There was nothing she could do about it now. She guessed she could just get rid of it, but that wasn't something she wanted to do without consulting her husband. She knew that ultimately, it was up to her, the kid was in her body after all, but she still wanted to at least talk to him about it. On the other hand, she wasn't sure if she wanted to get rid of them.
The idea of carrying Forrest's child filled her with joy. Raising them together, it'd be hard, but she wasn't opposed to it. Especially when both of their parents were still alive, and Forrest had no shortage of aunts and uncles. It wasn't like they'd be going at things alone. She knew that Forrest would be a great father, but she had no idea what kind of mother she'd be. Hurting her child honestly terrified her, which made her lean towards removing the kid. However, once more, that wasn't a decision she felt comfortable making on her own.
"Thank you." She finally said. "There's just... so much going on in my head."
Forrest smiled. "I can tell. Would you like to talk about something else? Take your mind off of things?"
Rhajat considered the idea, but she knew that the more she put it off, the worse things would get. She'd miss her chance to move on from the kid, if she wanted to, plus Forrest would notice eventually. He was a healer after all, he could tell that something was going on probably as early as a month or two. She sighed and pressed her lips together. There was no need to be so nervous. She took a deep breath, and released it through her nose in an attempt to calm herself.
"No, we need to talk about this."
Forrest's eyes widened. "Did I do something to hurt you?"
Rhajat's eyes widened in turn as she shook her head. "No, no, sorry that was a bad way of starting this. I promise if anything... I'm the problem."
He raised his eyebrow. "What do you mean? Did you do something? I promise whatever it is, we can face it together."
Rhajat really did feel Forrest was too good to her sometimes. "You don't even know what it is yet. For all you know this is something you won't be able to forgive."
Forrest hummed. "True. I don't know. What I do know is that you'd never do anything so bad that I couldn't forgive you."
Rhajat blushed again while smiling softly. She both loved and hated how well he understood her. It always made her a bit flustered, but at the same time it made her happy. She wasn't sure if anyone understood her the way her husband did. Maybe not even her family. That wasn't a condemnation of them, it was just how much Forrest got who she was.
"I suppose so... You are pretty damn charitable." She teased slightly.
Forrest shrugged in response. "It's less that, and more that I can't see a world where you'd do something so bad that I'd stop loving you." He stood up and walked over to her. He put a hand on her shoulder, and kissed the crown of her head. He then kissed her again on her forehead. "Sorry, but you're stuck with me Rhajat. Good luck getting away from me. You'll definitely need it."
Rhajat started giggling. Her stress and tension faded away, as if it was never there in the first place. She felt even sillier for being scared about telling her husband, a man as obsessed with her as she was with him. Even if he didn't want the child, he'd let her know gently, and they'd decide their next steps together. They were a team after all. Sometimes Rhajat struggled to remember that. She was so used to only being able to rely on herself, only having herself for companionship, that she'd sometimes forget that it was a thing of the past. That she could move on from those days, and she'd never have to return.
"Likewise." Rhajat said. She gently grabbed Forrest's hand and guided it to her belly. She looked up at him with a smile. "I... I hope they'll be as kind as you are."
Forrest, immediately catching the implication, stared at her without noticing his jaw dropping. He blinked a few times without saying anything. Rhajat could practically see the wheels in his head turning as he tried to process what he was told. She shook her head fondly while waiting for him to finally say something. The last of her doubts about her husband's reaction were cleared.
Forrest practically leapt onto Rhajat and pulled her into a tight hug. While she was still in his grasp, he backed up and lifted her into the air. Seemingly forgetting that he didn't have the most strength in the world, he started stumbling. The two fell onto the floor, both of them still laughing. Forrest and Rhajat looked into each other's eyes before leaning towards each other until their lips connected. They both pulled away after a few moments, a huge smile on both of their faces.
Forrest looked towards her with a delighted smile on his face. "I can't believe it... I'll be... a father... You'll be a mother... We'll be parents!"
Rhajat rolled her eyes affectionately. "Yes, that's how it works."
Forrest's smile faded as realization came over him, and a frown replaced his expression. "Wait, sorry. Are you okay with this? We don't have to have the kid of course. I'm not gonna force you into anything." He rubbed the back of his head sheepishly, hoping she didn't feel like she was being pressured.
"You're just now asking?" Rhajat asked with a sigh, still smiling. "I'm... scared honestly. I don't know... But... I'd like to try. Especially with you by my side, I think we can raise someone truly great. So yes... I want to keep this child."
The smile crept back onto Forrest's face. "Man... I can't wait to tell everyone! My Dads will be elated! I wouldn't be shocked if one of them cried, though I'm not sure which..."
Rhajat tapped her chin. "I'm not sure either. Niles and Leo both have their moments of being emotional, even if they try to hide it. I'm sure both of them will be delighted to be grandfathers. Elise and Camilla though... yeah they'll definitely shed a few tears. My parents will definitely cry too."
Forrest stood back up with Rhajat still in his arms. He was struggling, but he took a few steps as his arms quivered in pain, begging him to let them rest. In spite of that, he kept going, nothing was going to keep him down now. As long as he didn't push himself too hard, he'd be fine.
"I'm already gaining weight huh?" Rhajat asked.
Forrest giggled. "You know I've never been able to lift you that well."
He carried her to a nearby couch and gently put her down. He kissed her on her forehead again. "If you need anything, let me know. Anything. I'm here for the two of you. Whatever you want, I'll be here for you."
Rhajat smiled. "You're already being a great father."
"And you'll be a great mother."
Rhajat paused. "...Do you think so?" Her chest tightened once more, worried about all the ways she could mess things up. Like lashing out at her kid, or teaching them things they shouldn't know.
Forrest giggled again, the answer seeming so obvious to him. "Of course. You'll make mistakes of course. So will I. That's just parenthood. Neither of our parents did things perfectly. But we're here to balance each other out. That child is going to be the happiest child in the kingdom. I believe in us!" He then placed his hand on her belly. "I'm sure they do too."
"You know they're not thinking anything right now..." Rhajat snarked.
Forrest smiled. "Take the encouragement sweetie..." He kissed her on the cheek then took her hand before squeezing it. He looked directly into the eyes of his soulmate, and she looked back into his. They sat in a comfortable silence for a few minutes, just enjoying each other's company. Soon they'd have the company of a 3rd person, and neither of them could wait to meet them. Of course, that was nearly a year away. That didn't stop them from feeling excited.
"When do you wanna tell everyone?" Forrest asked.
"Hm... well we told everyone about the engagement pretty much as soon as you popped the question... This time, let's keep it our little secret for a few more weeks."
Forrest nodded. "That's fine with me, I may struggle to keep my excitement in check though. People will ask why I look so happy. I can't tell them about how 'I'm having a beautiful child with my beautiful wife.'" He grinned at her, smiling innocently.
Rhajat started blushing again. He knew exactly what he was doing. When he wanted to, he could be one hell of a charmer. She folded her arms. "I don't know if all of this stress is good for the baby..." She complained.
Forrest started laughing. "I'm sure they'll be fine. His mom being a bit embarrassed isn't going to harm his development or anything. Besides, they should get used to it." He leaned towards her. "Even after they're born, don't think I'll be any less in love with you. I'm going to make sure you know, they know, and everyone in the world knows how I feel about you."
"..." Rhajat stared at him with wide eyes and deeply red cheeks. She wasn't sure how to respond to that. So she didn't. She looked downward at her stomach. "I take it back, don't be like your Father..."
Forrest laughed again as Rhajat looked away. She did honestly love the attention, but she also didn't know how to react to someone who really liked her. In spite of how long they had known each other. What she did know though, is that their kid would grow up happy, surrounded by family. She couldn't ask for any more than that. They would be one weird family, but she knew they'd be a great one.
