Chapter 2: The Beginning of the End
It has been about a week since Naruto found out the truth of his and Azuka's predicament. He was DEAD?! Naruto doesn't know how to handle this new information; he is already having a tough time trying to find out who he was. Now, he has to grapple with the idea that he may be a GHOST. The thought sends shivers down his spine - he was never a fan of ghosts, finding them incredibly creepy and unsettling, with their mysterious presence and eerie abilities.
Perhaps these chains fading away from their chests are linked to his newfound ghostly state. Every day, Naruto observed the chains growing shorter, almost imperceptibly at first but gradually becoming more noticeable. What could this signify? He pondered the implications of the chains coming undone, wondering what might happen once they completely disappear.
Alongside the fading chains, another perplexing observation was that only he had the freedom to move. Azuka, on the other hand, seemed almost tethered to the very spot where she met her end. Her movement was restricted to a mere 5 feet, a limitation that Naruto found increasingly distressing. Despite the constraint, he made a point to stay by her side, offering comfort and companionship - his presence serving as a reassurance amidst their shared plight.
Expressing concern over leaving Azuka alone, Naruto informed her of his intention to take a short walk. Her response, while appreciative, carried a tinge of reluctance. "You know, Naruto, you don't have to stay here with me," she said softly, her voice tinged with a hint of melancholy as she wrapped her arms around her knees, her eyes betraying a sense of longing.
In response, Naruto looked at her with a mixture of solemnity and warmth, gently patting her head and offering a reassuring smile. "Don't even think about that," he reassured her, a playful glint in his eyes. "I'm only here to keep you company," he continued, playfully poking her forehead with his index and middle fingers before teasingly sticking his tongue out.
Her blush deepening, Azuka pushed him away lightly, her cheeks tinted with a rosy hue. "Leave before I give you a black eye," she quipped, a hint of affection underlying her feigned annoyance as Naruto playfully poked her forehead again and darted away, his infectious laughter echoing through the surroundings. As he ran off, she sighed softly and whispered, almost to herself, "Come back soon."
Naruto wandered through the city streets, the sight of other spirits unsettling him. They stood idly around, staring into nothingness. The sheer number of them freaked him out. As he continued his journey, he turned a corner and saw a man in a traditional black robe—a Shihakushō—place the hilt of his sword against a spirit's forehead.
"Please don't kill me!" the spirit cried out. "I have a wife! A child! I don't want to go."
As the hilt touched the spirit's forehead, it began to glow blue. The spirit gradually faded and disappeared. "May you be in peace," the man said, sheathing his sword.
Naruto was terrified. What had happened to that spirit? Was the man an enemy? He started to back away but accidentally kicked a can, making a loud noise that caught the man's attention. The man looked toward Naruto and began unsheathing his sword again, walking briskly toward him.
Panic took hold, and Naruto turned to run, sprinting back toward Azuka's location. He glanced over his shoulder and saw the man wasn't following him, which allowed him to slow down and catch his breath. "Who the hell was that guy?" he wondered aloud. "How could he see me? Is he a spirit too?"
As he turned the corner to the street where Azuka waited, he saw her on her knees, clutching her chest in apparent agony. "Azuka!" he screamed, running at full speed. "What's wrong?" He grabbed her shoulders, panic written across his face.
Azuka couldn't respond; she could only scream as the chains on her chest began to rapidly consume themselves. White substance spewed out, engulfing her. Naruto watched in horror as the white stuff formed a mask over her face, and her body morphed into an unrecognizable shape. The screaming finally stopped, and where her chest had been now resided a hollow hole.
The creature before him was no longer Azuka. It let out a low growl, its new form menacing. Terror gripped Naruto's heart—he had encountered something like this before... before he died.
The creature launched at him. Just then, the man in the Shihakushō appeared, halting the creature with his sword. "Run," he commanded.
"Don't hurt her!" Naruto exclaimed, pushing the man aside and spreading his arms in front of the creature. "She's just a littl—" The creature slammed its fist into his side, sending him flying.
"Idiot!" the man shouted. "That thing is not your friend anymore. Look at it!" He pointed at the creature. "That's a Hollow. It is no longer the person you knew."
The creature launched at the man. On the ground, Naruto coughed up blood and tried to get back on his feet. "I… I said… stop it!" he screamed as the man slashed at the Hollow. Unwittingly, Naruto released a massive burst of spiritual energy.
The man fell to his knees, stunned by the sudden surge. 'How can this be?' he thought. 'How does this kid have so much spiritual energy?'
As quickly as the energy had come, it vanished as Naruto passed out.
"Who is this kid?" the man wondered aloud.
The battle-worn streets seemed eerie and quiet after the commotion. Naruto lay unconscious, his breathing shallow. The man, still reeling from the unexpected burst of spiritual power, staggered to his feet. He cautiously approached Naruto, examining the boy lying before him. The magnitude of the spiritual energy he had sensed was almost impossible to comprehend.
Lifting Naruto gently, he carried him to a nearby sheltered area, far enough from the danger but close enough to keep an eye on him. Setting Naruto down, the man checked on him. "He's alive, or dead" the man chuckled to himself, relief flooding through him. "But how does he possess such immense spiritual power?"
He took a moment to survey the surroundings, ensuring they were alone before turning his attention back to Naruto. The boy's face was pale, and beads of sweat dotted his forehead. Carefully, the man began to treat Naruto's injuries, using whatever little medical supplies he had at hand.
While tending to Naruto, he couldn't help but reflect on the events that had just transpired. The transformation of Azuka into a Hollow was a grim reminder of the dangers lurking in their world. The man felt a pang of sympathy for Naruto; it was evident the boy had formed a strong bond with Azuka. Witnessing her transformation and attempting to protect her despite the odds spoke volumes about his character.
The nights in the spirit world were long and unyielding, and as twilight gave way to darkness, the man settled beside Naruto, keeping a vigilant watch. His thoughts were consumed by questions about Naruto's identity and the mystery behind his immense spiritual energy.
Hours passed, and the first light of dawn broke through the desolate cityscape. Naruto stirred, groaning softly as he regained consciousness. Blinking against the harsh morning light, he found the man who had saved him sitting nearby, eyes closed but clearly awake.
Seeing Naruto move, the man opened his eyes and leaned forward. "You're finally awake," he said quietly. "How are you feeling?"
Naruto attempted to sit up, wincing at the pain shooting through his body. "I've been better," he admitted, rubbing his side where the Hollow had struck him. "What happened? Where's Azuka?"
The man's face darkened. "I'm sorry, but Azuka is gone. She transformed into a Hollow, and there's no bringing her back."
Naruto's heart sank. He had held out a sliver of hope that there might be some way to save her. "A Hollow," he repeated, the word tasting bitter on his tongue. "Is that going to happen to me too?"
The man studied Naruto carefully before replying. "No, you're different. You still possess your humanity and an extraordinary amount of spiritual energy. But you must learn to control it, or you'll risk losing yourself as Azuka did."
Naruto's mind raced, grappling with the gravity of the situation. "Who are you?" he finally asked. "And how do you know so much about all this?"
"My name is Zennosuke Kurumadani," the man replied. "I'm a Soul Reaper, tasked with maintaining the balance between the living and the spirit worlds. It's my duty to guide lost souls and protect them from Hollows."
"A Soul Reaper?" Naruto echoed, trying to process the revelation. "So, you're like some kind of guardian?"
Zennosuke nodded. "You could say that. And it's clear you have a lot to learn about our world and your place in it."
Naruto looked at Zennosuke, determination etched on his face. "Then teach me. If I have any chance of surviving and finding out who I am, I need to know everything."
Zennosuke regarded Naruto with a measured gaze. "You're persistent. That's good. But understand that this path won't be easy. You'll face dangers that you can't even imagine."
"Whatever it takes," Naruto declared, his voice unwavering. "I have to know the truth, and I have to protect those I care about."
Zennosuke saw the resolve in Naruto's eyes and knew he couldn't turn him away. "Very well," he said, standing up. "Your training begins now."
With that, Zennosuke led Naruto to a secluded area. "We'll have to perform Konsō on you," he explained. "We have to send you to the Soul Society and enroll you into the Soul Reaper Academy. This is crucial if you're to avoid the same fate as Azuka."
With that said, Zennosuke performed Konsō and thus the beginning of Naruto's training.
