"This is lame," Vegeta commented as they sat in homeroom, "I can't believe we're in high school and they still insist on registery."
"Seventeen?" the homeroom teacher called.
Seventeen looked bored as hell as he leaned on his palm. "Yes."
"Eighteen?"
Eighteen sighed, "unfortunately."
The teacher frowned. "A simple yes or here would be sufficient."
Eighteen grinned. "Alright then, or."
"Don't get smart, Miss. Eighteen."
Eighteen stared blankly. "I thought that's what school was for."
Vegeta chuckled at the blonde's response.
Goku raised his hand, and the teacher looked at him with a sigh. "Yes, Goku?"
"Are we allowed to eat in class?"
The teacher, Mr. Futo, pinched the bridge of his nose. "For the last time, Goku, you eat at lunch time only."
Mr. Futo finally got through the register before the bell rang, and the students gathered their bags, ready for their first lesson.
Goku, Chi Chi, Seventeen, and Yamcha separated from the group with goodbyes as they headed to their Math class, saying a small goodbye. "I hate Math," Goku said sulkily, "numbers confuse me."
Chi Chi looked up at him with a smile. "I'd be happy to help you if you don't understand."
Goku returned the smile. "Thanks!"
Seventeen rolled his eyes as they entered the classroom. The layout had two seated tables in rows of three. Goku and Chi Chi took the second table toward the back while Yamcha took the table behind them so that they could sit near each other.
Seventeen frowned and looked at Goku. "Do I have to sit next to him?"
Goku smiled apologetically. "Aww, that's not very nice."
Yamcha huffed. "What's wrong with me?"
Seventeen grumbled and sat down in the empty seat. "What's right with you?"
"Hey, I'll have you know that I was very popular in middle school."
"Like I give a damn about your popularity, jock."
Goku tried to laugh to break the tension. "At least we're allowed to sit together."
"We're going to start off with some small Math exercises. Please turn to page thirty one of the text book in front of you. These will be your assigned books for the term, be sure to take care of them."
Goku looked at the page of Math questions and scratched his head. "I have a headache already." Goku looked at Chi Chi when she tapped him on the arm.
"Want some help?"
Goku's smile brightened. "Please."
….
Math classes passed very slowly for each group, but it finally ended, and they eventually headed toward their history class. Bulma, Vegeta, Seventeen, and Krillin were together. Each classroom seemed to have the same layout. The teacher ushered the students in, introducing himself as Mr. Buyon. "Of course, you may sit with your friends, but any funny antics, and you'll be moved.
"I hate history," Bulma commented as they tried to get a seat toward the back.
"Do you ever stop complaining?" Vegeta questioned with a huff.
Bulma frowned at him. "Do you ever stop being a jerk?"
Vegeta feigned shock. "Good comeback."
"Take your seats!" Mr. Buyon shouted as the four new friends were now the only ones unseated.
The topic seemed to be the Battle of Hastings, and Bulma looked at the book in front of her. Ten questions were waiting to be answered as the teacher wrote facts on the board.
"This sucks." Bulma began reading the introduction paragraph with a bored frown.
The Battle of Hastings, which took place on 14 October 1066, was the decisive Norman victory in the Norman Conquest of England. It was fought between the Norman army of Duke William II of Normandy and the English army of King Harold II. The battle took place at Senlac Hill, approximately six miles northwest of Hastings, close to the present-day town of Battle, East Sussex. Harold II was killed in the battle, and legend has it that he was shot through the eye with an arrow. Although there was further English resistance, this battle is seen as the point at which William gained control of England, becoming its first Norman ruler as King William I. The famous Bayeux Tapestry depicts the events before and during the battle. Battle Abbey in East Sussex was subsequently built on the site of the conflict.
Ten minutes passed before Bulma finally finished the passage.
Krillin, who was seated next to her, leaned over. "Have you finished it?"
Bulma nodded. "Now starting the first question, how about you?"
"Same here. Wanna work on it together?"
Bulma smiled and shuffled her seat, moving her paper closer to Krillin's. "Beats getting the answers wrong."
The teacher studied the students around the room, observing everyone closely as they chatted quietly amongst themselves. His eyes suddenly fixed on Vegeta, who sat back with his hands clasped behind his head with a bored expression. Mr. Buyon stood up to address him. "Would you like to tell me why you feel you should ignore the work, Vegeta?"
Bulma frowned to herself. Show off.
Seventeen looked at Vegeta sitting next to him. "Are you trying to get yourself kicked out already?"
Mr. Buyon made his way to their desk. "Vegeta, I said do you feel you can ignore this work?"
Vegeta looked up at him with a frown. "I heard you." There were a few gasps from other students, as though Vegeta talking back was blasphemy. Nerds.
Mr. Buyon folded his arms. "And your answer?"
Vegeta slid the book toward the teacher. "I'm already done."
Mr. Buyon glanced over the work, smiling impressively. "Not bad, Vegeta. This is good work. You even gave your own opinions."
"Ha. Nerd."
Vegeta turned his head and glared at the one who dared to call him a nerd. Seventeen grabbed his arm to stop him from acting. "Not here. Pound him later."
Vegeta ignored his sibling and walked over toward the student, who now regretted his insult.
"Return to your seat, Vegeta," Mr. Buyon demanded.
Vegeta picked up the student from out of his chair. "Say that again, and I'll beat you so that you never talk again, understand?"
The boy merely nodded and gulped. Vegeta slammed him back into his seat and returned to his. When he returned, he caught Bulma's stare and grinned when she looked away.
Once the rest of the students finished the questions, the teacher discussed the answers and provided them with homework before the bell rang for their next class.
As they filed out of class, Bulma turned her head to Krillin as they walked down the hallway with Seventeen and Vegeta behind them. "What's our next class?"
Krillin looked at his schedule. "Science. We're all together this time."
They stood outside the classroom, waiting for the others. Vegeta and Seventeen leaned against the wall with Bulma and Krillin standing in front.
Goku, Yamcha, Eighteen, and Chi Chi finally arrived with five minutes to spare. "Hey, how was your lesson?" Bulma asked.
"Boring as usual," Eighteen replied.
Yamcha smiled at her, leaning his arm casually on her shoulder. "It was okay."
"I guess it wasn't that bad," Chi Chi said with a shrug, happy that she felt comfortable around them.
Goku sighed. "I can't believe how many people died in the battle. It's so sad."
Vegeta looked at him weirdly. "It's a war, genius. Did you expect them to dance around with flowers?"
Goku pouted. "No."
Bulma rolled her eyes and stepped into the classroom. "Come on."
Goku smiled and followed. "I can't wait till this lesson is over!"
Chi Chi tilted her head, waiting for him to elaborate. "Why?"
Goku gave her a cheesy grin. "Lunch, of course!"
Chi Chi giggled. "You're so funny, Goku."
"I just love food!"
Bulma and her group sat in the back row together. From left to right was Goku, Chi Chi, Krillin, Yamcha, Bulma, Eighteen, Seventeen, and Vegeta on the end. "I hope we get to pick our lab partners," Bulma stated, looking at Yamcha with a wink.
Yamcha smiled. "Me too."
The science teacher was a woman with a stocky build and a stern expression. She came into the room, placed a folder on the desk, and glanced at the students talking and shouting. "This is going to be a long year," she said.
Introductions aside, the students had switched seats when they learned they could choose their own lab partners. The tables were shuffled around into individual two-seaters.
Goku was thrilled that Chi Chi had asked him to be his lab partner.
Seventeen rolled his eyes at their enthusiasm before glancing at Vegeta with a sigh. "Lab partners?"
Vegeta shrugged and followed Seventeen to a table. They turned when Eighteen yelled at them. "That means I'm stuck with baldy!" Eighteen glanced at Krillin. "No offence." She turned back to her siblings with a frown when Vegeta smirked.
"Not our problem," the spiky-haired teen replied and sat down.
Krillin hunched his shoulders shyly when Eighteen sat next to him.
…..
The group shuffled out of the classroom. Bulma came out looking very proud of herself as her new friends followed suit. "Know it all," Vegeta commented as they made their way to the big hall for lunch.
Eighteen groaned. "I can't believe we messed up the easiest experiment known to man! It said yellow, not red."
Krillin flinched. "I'm sorry. I got nervous and wasn't looking at the ingredients properly."
Chi Chi smiled at Goku as they waited in line outside the canteen. "We make a good team, Goku."
The teen didn't seem to be paying attention, as he couldn't stop fidgeting.
Vegeta frowned. "Will you stand still already! You're driving me nuts!"
"What the hell's wrong with you, man?" Krillin asked.
Goku looked at his old friend. "I'm sorry, I'm just really hungry!"
Chi Chi was next in line to get her food, but when she looked at Goku's face, she couldn't help herself. "Goku, would you like to go in front of me?" Goku's smile warmed Chi Chi's heart as he thanked loudly and rushed ahead to order.
Seventeen and Vegeta made gagging sounds, and Eighteen rolled her eyes. Bulma laughed with Yamcha as he put his arm around her waist. She tried to act casual, but old feelings were resurfacing from their middle school days, and she wondered if maybe they could rekindle their relationship. Once the group had ordered, they found an empty table to sit together. Goku and Vegeta rivaled in the amount of food they had ordered.
"You're not seriously going to eat all that?" Bulma questioned in surprise.
Goku and Vegeta looked at her blankly. "I'm really hungry," Goku simply stated.
"I skipped breakfast," Vegeta replied.
"Wow," Krillin gaped as he watched them devour their lunches.
Seventeen and Eighteen shrugged, being used to Vegeta's bottomless stomach. "I can't believe you've finally found someone who eats as much as you," Eighteen gestured while eating her jacket potato.
…
Music was the only lesson they took an interest in. It was the only class they could relax and be themselves in. The group of friends learned they could each play an instrument and that their chosen music styles differed from one another, yet that seemed to bring them closer.
Their music teacher, Mr. Giro, could see some excitement in his students' faces. It was a perfect opportunity for them to show off their artistic skills. Vegeta glanced at Goku's contact book.
"Your middle name is Kakarott?"
Goku nodded and looked at Vegeta. "It's weird, isn't it?"
Vegeta shrugged. "I don't care, but I'm calling you that from now on."
Goku blinked in surprise. "How come?"
Vegeta huffed and leaned back in his chair. "Sounds better than your first name."
Goku pouted but grinned sheepishly. "Like a nickname?"
Vegeta raised an eyebrow. "I suppose."
"Cool! No one's ever liked my middle name before! Thanks, Vegeta!"
Vegeta punched him on the arm. "Shut up, moron."
"Alright, settle down, Let's get on with the lesson, shall we?"
