Chapter 1: A Different Team

Naruto fidgeted in his seat, still riding high from finally graduating the Academy. His newly-earned headband gleamed in the morning light streaming through the classroom windows. Around him, his fellow graduates chatted excitedly, wondering which teams they'd be placed on.

"Settle down, everyone," Iruka-sensei called out, clutching his clipboard. "I'll now announce the team assignments."

Naruto barely paid attention as the first few teams were called. His mind wandered to all the awesome jutsu he'd learn now that he was officially a ninja. After mastering the Shadow Clone Jutsu, he felt unstoppable.

"Team 10," Iruka's voice cut through his daydream. "Yamanaka Ino, Nara Shikamaru, and..." There was a slight pause. "Uzumaki Naruto."

"WHAT?" Ino's shriek could probably be heard in the Hokage Tower. "Why am I stuck with the dead-last and the lazy bum?"

Shikamaru merely muttered his signature "troublesome" while Naruto spun around to face the blonde kunoichi. "Hey! I'm not dead-last anymore – I graduated, didn't I?"

Iruka cleared his throat. "Your team's jonin-sensei will be Hatake Kakashi."

A collective gasp went through the room. Even Shikamaru raised an eyebrow. Everyone knew about the Copy Ninja, the man who had mastered a thousand jutsu.

Later that day, Team 10 sat waiting in their assigned classroom. Two hours had passed since the other teams left with their senseis.

"This is ridiculous!" Ino paced back and forth. "What kind of jonin shows up this late?"

Naruto, who had been practicing balancing a kunai on his finger, perked up. "Hey, why don't we set up a prank for making us wait?"

"Don't be childish," Ino snapped, but Shikamaru noticed her eyes flickering to the eraser by the chalkboard.

"It wouldn't work on a jonin," Shikamaru drawled from his relaxed position. "Though..." A rare glint of mischief crossed his face. "We could try something more elaborate."

Ten minutes later, they had rigged an impressive combination of wire, paper bombs (filled with paint instead of explosives), and a carefully positioned bucket of water. Naruto's pranking expertise, Ino's precise chakra control, and Shikamaru's strategic mind had created something worthy of a jonin challenge.

The door slid open.

In walked a tall man with gravity-defying silver hair, most of his face covered by a mask and his headband tilted over one eye. He took one step into the room and...

Nothing happened.

"Interesting trap," came the lazy drawl as he held up several disabled wire triggers in one hand. "Good teamwork, though. My first impression of you three... you're not completely hopeless."

Naruto's jaw dropped. They hadn't even seen him move!

"Meet me on the roof in five minutes." With that, he disappeared in a swirl of leaves.

On the roof, Kakashi leaned against the railing, studying his new team. The Yamanaka heir, the Nara genius, and the village's jinchūriki – an unusual combination, but he could see the potential.

"Let's introduce ourselves," he said. "Dreams, likes, dislikes, hobbies – that sort of thing."

"Why don't you go first, Sensei?" Ino suggested, still slightly miffed about the wait.

"Me? Well... I'm Hatake Kakashi. I have many likes and dislikes. Dreams... I have those too. Hobbies... I have lots of hobbies."

"That told us nothing!" Naruto exclaimed.

"Your turn, Loudmouth."

Naruto jumped to his feet. "I'm Uzumaki Naruto! I like ramen, especially from Ichiraku's! I dislike the three minutes it takes for cup ramen to cook. My dream is to become the greatest Hokage ever, believe it!"

Kakashi's visible eye curved in what might have been a smile. "Next."

"Troublesome... I'm Nara Shikamaru. I like watching clouds and playing shogi. I dislike doing anything troublesome. My dream is to live an average life."

"I'm Yamanaka Ino! I like flowers and..." she glanced at Sasuke in a nearby training ground, then surprisingly shook her head. "I like learning new jutsu. I dislike people who don't take being a ninja seriously. My dream is to become strong enough to make my clan proud!"

Kakashi nodded, noting the slight shift in Ino's typical behavior. Perhaps being separated from Sasuke would help her focus on her own growth.

"Meet at Training Ground 10 tomorrow at 6 AM. Don't eat breakfast – you'll throw up." He paused for dramatic effect. "Oh, and of the graduates, only nine will actually become genin. The rest go back to the Academy. Tomorrow's test has a 66% failure rate."

As he vanished in another leaf swirl, leaving behind three shocked genin, Kakashi smiled beneath his mask. His Sharingan tingled slightly, reminding him of the sealed scroll in his vest pocket – a project he'd been working on to better control his doujutsu's chakra drain. Maybe this team would give him a reason to perfect it.

After all, teaching the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki would require him to be at his best. And something told him this unusual team combination might just work out better than anyone expected.
