Chapter 2: The Bell Test... With a Twist

Dawn painted Training Ground 10 in shades of gold and shadow. Naruto arrived first, his stomach growling in protest of the missed breakfast. He paced anxiously, trying to ignore both his hunger and the butterflies in his stomach.

Shikamaru showed up next, looking surprisingly alert. A careful observer might have noticed the slight bulge in his weapon pouch that suggested more than just standard ninja tools.

"You actually came early," Naruto remarked, genuinely surprised.

Shikamaru yawned. "Mom wouldn't let me sleep in. Said something about not embarrassing the clan."

Ino arrived exactly on time, her long blonde hair freshly tied back. "Has Kakashi-sensei shown up yet?"

"What do you think?" Naruto grumbled.

Two hours later, their sensei finally appeared in a swirl of leaves, that same lazy expression visible in his one exposed eye.

"You're late!" Ino and Naruto shouted in unison.

"Maa, maa, I had to help an old lady cross the street. Then her cat got stuck in a tree..." Kakashi's eye curved into what they were beginning to recognize as a smile. "But let's get started, shall we?"

He pulled out two small bells, the metal catching the morning light. "Your test is simple. Get these bells from me before noon. Whoever doesn't get a bell fails and goes back to the Academy."

"But there are only two bells," Ino pointed out, her eyes narrowing.

"Exactly."

Naruto's face scrunched in confusion. "That means one of us has to fail!"

"Very observant." Kakashi tied the bells to his waist. "You have until noon. Come at me with the intent to kill, or you won't stand a chance."

"Troublesome," Shikamaru muttered, but his eyes were sharp, analyzing.

"Begin!"

Ino and Shikamaru immediately disappeared into the surrounding foliage. Naruto, however...

"I'm gonna get those bells right now! Shadow Clone Jutsu!"

A dozen Narutos charged at Kakashi, who didn't even look up from the orange book he'd pulled out. One by one, the clones poofed away as Kakashi casually dodged and countered, never taking his eye off the page.

"Ninja lesson number one: Taijutsu," Kakashi drawled, suddenly appearing behind the real Naruto. His hands formed a tiger seal. "Hidden Leaf Ancient Taijutsu Supreme Technique: A Thousand Years of Death!"

Instead of connecting, however, Kakashi's fingers passed through Naruto, who dissolved into shadow.

"A clone?" Kakashi's eye widened slightly. In the trees, Ino smirked.

"Shadow Possession Jutsu, success," Shikamaru's voice came from behind a nearby tree. Dark tendrils connected his shadow to Kakashi's.

Ino's hands formed her family's signature seal. "Mind Transfer Ju—"

"Kai!" Kakashi's form shimmered and vanished, revealing a log.

"Substitution," Shikamaru clicked his tongue. "But that's what we expected."

Naruto emerged from his hiding spot, grinning. "Did you see his face though? Well, what we could see of it anyway."

"Focus!" Ino hissed. "We need a better plan."

Shikamaru crouched down, forming his thinking seal – fingers pressed together in a circle. "That's why I ate breakfast," he muttered. "Couldn't think properly on an empty stomach."

"You what?" Ino whispered furiously. "He said we'd throw up!"

"Think about it," Shikamaru replied. "Everything he's done so far has been to mess with us. The lateness, the two bells, the breakfast warning... he's testing something specific."

"But what?" Naruto asked, unconsciously lowering his voice to match his teammates.

A smile tugged at Shikamaru's lips. "Teamwork. And we're already ahead of the game."

In a nearby tree, Kakashi lowered his book slightly, his Sharingan eye uncovered beneath his hitai-ate. Perhaps this team really is different, he thought, watching them huddle together, already working as one unit.

The real test was about to begin.

"Here's the plan," Shikamaru whispered, his eyes calculating. "Kakashi-sensei's stronger than all of us combined, but he has one major weakness right now."

"The book!" Naruto exclaimed, then quickly lowered his voice when Ino shot him a glare.

"Exactly. And there's something else – he's been favoring his left side slightly. I noticed it during that first exchange."

Ino's eyes widened. "The Sharingan... it drains his chakra, doesn't it? That's why he keeps it covered."

"Troublesome, but useful." Shikamaru pulled out a scroll. "Naruto, how many Shadow Clones can you make without exhausting yourself?"

"Tons! I barely feel it anymore."

"Good. Ino, can you use your Mind Transfer on a clone?"

She frowned. "I've never tried, but theoretically..."

"Perfect. Here's what we'll do..."

Kakashi flipped another page in his book, but his attention was fully on his surroundings. These genin were... interesting. Most teams he'd tested either fell apart competing for the bells or failed to see through to the real purpose of the test. But this trio...

"CHARGE!"

A wave of orange crashed through the trees – at least fifty Naruto clones rushing from all directions. Kakashi sighed dramatically. "Didn't you learn from the first time?"

His hands moved to form seals, but suddenly his shadow stretched and split, connecting to the shadows of several clones. Clever, he thought. Using the multiple shadows from the clones to enhance Shikamaru's range.

"Mind Transfer Jutsu!"

Kakashi's eye widened as Ino's technique flew past him... and into one of the captured Shadow Clones. The clone's eyes snapped open with Ino's consciousness, hands already moving through seals.

"Release!"

All the captured clones burst into smoke, creating a thick cloud that obscured everything. Through the haze, Kakashi sensed multiple chakra signatures moving – but with so many clones, pinpointing the real ones was challenging even for his Sharingan.

A glint of metal caught his eye. Shuriken. He deflected them easily, but the weapons had ninja wire attached. The wires wrapped around him, and he felt the familiar tug of a Shadow Possession taking hold through the wire's shadow.

"Got you!" Naruto burst from the ground at his feet, hands reaching for the bells.

Kakashi substituted again, appearing several meters away. "Very impressive, but—"

His book was gone.

"Looking for this, Sensei?"

Ino stood holding the orange novel, having returned to her body. Shikamaru crouched nearby, a satisfied smirk on his face. And Naruto...

The real Naruto dangled the bells from his fingers, grinning triumphantly. "Shadow Clones are pretty useful for pickpocketing when everyone's distracted!"

Kakashi stared at his team for a long moment. Then, to their surprise, he started laughing.

"Well done," he said, pushing up his headband to reveal his Sharingan. "You didn't just see through the test – you turned your supposed weaknesses into strengths. Naruto's 'wasteful' clone usage, Ino's 'risky' mind techniques, Shikamaru's 'lazy' strategic thinking... you made them work together perfectly."

"So... we pass?" Ino asked hopefully, still clutching the book like a hostage.

"You pass." Kakashi's expression grew serious. "In the ninja world, those who break the rules are trash. But those who abandon their teammates are worse than trash. You didn't let the two bells divide you. Instead, you worked together, trusted each other's abilities, and succeeded as a team."

"YES!" Naruto pumped his fist in the air. "We did it! We're real genin now! Hey, hey, can we get ramen to celebrate?"

"Troublesome," Shikamaru muttered, but he was smiling.

"First," Kakashi held out his hand, "my book?"

Ino returned it with a slight blush. "We didn't actually look inside..."

"Good. Because that would have meant extra training. The painful kind." His eye curved up. "Meet here tomorrow at 8 AM for our first real training session. And this time... eating breakfast is mandatory."

As his new students celebrated, Kakashi watched them with growing interest. The Yamanaka's tactical mind, the Nara's strategic brilliance, and the Uzumaki's unpredictable creativity – combined with their natural teamwork, they could become something special.

Minato-sensei, he thought, I think I finally found a team worth teaching.
