Marie shared with Edd that she was going to thrift with her friends because they give out discounts on Wednesdays. Edd mentioned that he also has plans to meet up with his friends. What will they be doing? The usual stuff.
As the Eds are getting into Edd's car, the sky is clear, it is chill out. Gentle, cold streaks of wind blow from the north.
"You've been talking to her more, Double D." said Eddy, as he opened the passenger seat door, about to hop in.
"Who? Marie?" said Edd as he got inside the car.
"Yeah? Who else?" said Eddy as he sat in the passenger seat, closing the door.
".. Seems to be the case." said Edd, as he then puts on his seatbelt and puts his feet on the brakes.
"Do you like her? Does she like you? Or are you two already seeing each other?" asked Eddy, staring at Edd, waiting for an answer.
"Seatbelts please, Eddy. And Ed, in the back." said Edd as he disengaged the handbrake and started the car up. The car shook briefly.
"Okay. These zombies won't let me, Double D." said Ed as he put on his seatbelt in the back with one hand, still playing on his phone.
"Put it o-" said Edd, looking back at Ed from the rear view mirror.
"Oh, you've done that, okay." said Edd, turning back to the front after noticing.
"... So?!" said Eddy. He's been waiting for an answer.
"No. We are not seeing each other, Eddy. Don't assume that, and while it is a possibility that she may be infatuated with me, Eddy. I highly doubt it." answered Edd, as he began to drive.
"And do you like her?" asked Eddy.
"She's a friend, Eddy." said Edd, focused on driving.
Eddy eyed Double D. He's clearly avoiding his question. That's not a valid answer.
"Okay, Edd! But that doesn't answer my question." said Eddy, doubling down.
"Well- No. No, absolutely not." said Edd as he kept driving. Then he began to reconsider his answer, because "Absolutely not" didn't feel right.
"Hmph. Whatever." said Eddy as he stared off through the window, ah, the same thing he sees every day. Sidewalks, shops, and suburban housing. Peach Creek is a boring town for him. There aren't even that many people here. It's like he already knows every single kid in his school. It's a town with around twenty to forty thousand people or so.
"That sounded as if I was repulsed by her. To clarify, I am not." said Edd.
"So, you like her?" said Eddy, questioning.
"Platonically." said Edd.
"Right, whatever sockhead." said Eddy as he kept staring through the glass.
Nothing happens in the car for a few seconds.
"But I think she likes you, Double D." said Ed, out of nowhere, breaking the 7-second silence that filled the car after Eddy.
"I doubt it, Ed." said Edd.
The group arrived at Ed's house.. Sarah was already home. The 3 got down to the basement and booted up their game as usual. Eddy was eager to play a game where he often beats Ed, which is hard to come by. Ed wanted to do whatever fun. And Edd, he just wanted to be there with his friends, but in his mind, he was thinking about what Eddy and Ed said. Huh. Maybe she does have a crush on him. He continues assessing his thoughts.
"OH! PAUL LOBS IT UP! GRIFFIN! SLAMS IT DOWN!" Eddy shouted excitedly. His voice blasting through the room.
"No! Awh." said Ed.
A buzzer sound erupts from the speakers. Commentating starts.
"TAKE THAT, LUMPY!" said Eddy as he stood up from the couch, victory washed over him, and he pumped his fist with a wide smile
"Ah, such a shame." said Ed as he put the controller on the coffee table and lay back on the couch.
"Hah!" said Eddy as he calmed down and sat back down.
"Ed, Wizards are for Washington D.C., not our great state of Washington. If you compete with a different team, I have no doubts that you'll emerge victorious." said Edd, sitting in a bean bag next to the couch.
"Okay. We rematch. I'm Spurs this time." said Ed, as he picked the controller back up.
"Whatever, lumpy." said Eddy.
Sounds of dribbling, chitchatting, and button-mashing fill the room for a good while. But Edd heard only his thoughts. He lost focus on whatever was on the screen.
"Do you believe Marie likes me, Eddy?" asked Edd.
"Huh? What'd you say, Edd?" said Eddy, not hearing him.
"Do you think she likes me?" asked Edd.
"... Feels like it. She's the one who approaches first most of the time right?" asked Eddy.
"Yes, I believe so." said Edd, after thinking and realizing that she does, in fact, take the initiative more often than Edd.
"She likes you, I know it." said Eddy.
"Yep." said Ed, adding on.
"Huh. Are you guys against it?" said Edd.
"I don't know. You said she's different. I just hope she's not like THAT girl. You know!" said Eddy, raising his voice at the end for a bit.
"Yup. Soo... scary." said Ed.
"She's not, I promise you." said Edd.
"So? What? You like her now?" asked Eddy.
"Well I-" said Edd, before being cut off by Eddy.
"ARE YOU SERIOUS, ED?!" shouted Eddy, standing up, hands still on the controller, staring at the screen.
"Blame the game, Eddy. Watch this, I will get lucky." said Ed, with a determined look on his face.
Crowd erupting can be heard from the speakers.
"ARE- ARE YOU KIDDING ME? FROM HALF COURT?" shouted Eddy, his voice getting raspy.
"Wow! That got in! No way!" said Ed, with a wide smile on his face.
"I would, if-" said Edd, before being cut off again.
"SHUT UP, SOCKHEAD! YOU'RE DISTRACTING ME!" shouted Eddy, still staring intently at the screen.
"Jeez Louise, calm down, man." said Edd. As he looked back at the screen, I guess Eddy doesn't wanna hear it.
The house bell rings.
"Oh, wait. I think that's my package, pause the game-" said Ed.
"DON'T CHICKEN OUT OF THIS! WE'LL GET IT LATER!" shouted Eddy.
The same ambience fills the room.
After a few moments, the door to the basement can be heard opening as footsteps follow down the stairs. Edd turns his head.
"Ed, it's your package. Also, keep it down. So frickin' loud." said Sarah as she placed the package on the table behind them.
"Okay, leave it there- Thank you, little sister." said Ed as he turned back to the screen.
"JUST-" shouted Eddy, before getting cut off by Ed.
"Shhh.. You know what she said. My mom will kick you guys out." said Ed, doing the shushing finger to Eddy.
"... Just say "fucking", Sarah." said Eddy.
"Whatever, Eddy." said Sarah, as she then stepped up out of the man cave.
Eddy calmed down a bit, still focused on the game, but he thought back to Edd after the anger was out of his mind.
"What were you gonna say, Double D?" asked Eddy, again.
"Continuing, in the unlikely possibility that she does, in fact, harbor romantic feelings for me. If she wishes to pursue a relationship, then I would be open to granting her that." said Edd.
The room was filled with silence. Only interrupted by video game sounds.
"You'd date her if she asked you out?" asked Eddy, making sure.
"... Yes, Eddy." answered Edd, after thoroughly processing his thoughts.
Eddy huffed.
"Hmph. She will, dude. It's not like I have anything against that, though. Whatever makes you happy, dude. As long as-" said Eddy, before being cut off by Ed.
"As long as she's not like that girl. So scary." said Ed.
"Yep. That chick's voice still rings in my ears, Jesus." said Eddy.
"Don't worry, she's nothing like her. But, I must say, I'm surprised by the lack of opposition from you two." said Edd, still slouching on the bean bag.
"If she is terrible, you'll suffer the most. And you better not bring her here." said Eddy, still focused on the game.
"I believe Double D. He is a smarty pants." said Ed, still focused on the game.
Edd laughed a bit.
"Well, thank you, Ed." said Edd.
The same ambience fills the room again, maybe Double D's open-mindedness has spread to his two best friends.
A buzzer sounds from the TV.
"How am I down 15 in the first quarter?!" shouted Eddy.
"I will go to the toilet now. Be right back, guys." said Ed as he placed his controller down and got up, and walked to the bathroom.
Eddy also placed his controller down, then got up to stretch and walked over to the package that Sarah delivered.
"What'd you order, Ed?" asked Eddy.
"It's the surprise, Eddy. You can open it." said Ed from the bathroom.
"It came already? You were talking about it only yesterday lunch!" said Eddy as he began to peel the tape off the box.
"Same day delivery, Eddy." said Ed.
Eddy pulls out what appears to be...
"A- A pink full bodysuit?! You're going to be pink guy for Halloween?!" shouted Eddy.
Cut to Marie, she and her friends went to the thrift store in Peach Creek, so much cool stuff and accessories! Like earrings, necklaces, bracelets, shirts, belts, and more. How did they find all this stuff and sell it so cheaply?
During their thrifting, Marie told her friends about her feelings towards Edd. The response was an astounding
"We knew."
How? Marie thought.
Then they all kept thrifting together. And hours passed, they went to get a meal, then headed their way home.
Marie walked home to the trailer park, passing under the low-lumen orange street lights, they've always given her a great sense of comfort. For some reason, these dim lights have always provided her with a sense of warmth. It's the one she often sees in her melancholic dreams.
She steps through the lane, about to cross the community bridge. Then she hears chattering and loud video games from Ed's house. She heard a little bit of Edd's voice. It made her smile wider than expected. She hears this more than half the time when she walks home. But just around yesterday was when she started to deeply appreciate it.
Marie made her way through the trailer park to her usual trailer. She steps up as she then inserts her keys in and walks into the trailer to find.
"May?" asked Marie with a concerned look on her face.
May sat up from a lying position on the couch. She was wearing earbuds connected to her phone, sniffling, and her nose was red.
"Are you okay?" asked Marie with a concerned tone, walking closer to May on the couch.
"Hey- um- I'm fine." said May as she wiped her eyes.
"What were you crying about?" asked Marie, as she dropped her bag down to the floor, it leaning on the couch.
"I wasn't crying.." said May as she looked down in an attempt to hide her face.
"... Sure, May." said Marie as she sat down next to May, looking at her.
May continued sniffling, though less as she pulled off her earbuds.
"Is this about-" asked Marie, before being cut off by May.
"Yea." said May.
"What'd he do? Or, what did you do." asked Marie
"I don't know! I didn't do anything, he didn't do anything, I just started thinking about him and me, then I teared up." said May as her eyes began welling up with tears once again.
"Why?" asked Marie.
"I don't knoww..." said May as she then sniffles for a bit.
Marie looked at her sister, oh, poor May. Part of her wants to tell May to just toughen up and deal with it, since tough love has always been the type of love they're all too accustomed to. If she were Lee, or her former self, she would've already told May to shut up and deal with it. But Marie is an expressive person who feels deeply, so she understands this. The last thing she wants to do is hurt her sister, as she has grown to become emotionally intelligent.
"He hates me." said May, still looking down.
"Come on, May, he doesn't." said Marie.
"Yes he does! How can you not?" shouted May, looking at Marie.
"Calm down, May. You didn't even do anything." said Marie, placing her hand on May's shoulder.
"Oh, WE did alright!" said May, pushing her hand off.
"That's in the past! Just say sorry!" said Marie.
"I know! Jeez, Marie!" said May, looking down.
"I mean, I told Edd I was sorry. If I can do it, you can do it." said Marie.
"You did?" said May, looking at Marie.
"Yeah... Through text." said Marie.
"Yeah, of course you did, Marie. You're brave. I'm not like you." said May, looking back down at her feet.
"It's not hard, okay, May? Ed is a nice guy, he'll get it." said Marie.
"Yeah, but, I don't know... I don't think I'd be brave enough." said May.
"Take your time then, May. He's not going to go looking for anyone soon." said Marie.
"Heh." exclaimed May.
"What were you listening to anyway?" asked Marie as she grabbed May's phone and checked.
"Your songs started sounding good in times like this for some reason, haha." said May.
"I don't even listen to Avril, that's your song." said Marie.
They shared a laugh, and May felt more at ease. After a while, they changed the subject, and soon after, they all went to bed to prepare for Thursday.
Thursday morning. On Marie's mind, in first period, she will be turning in that assignment to the teacher with Double D. He has it, heh, more opportunities to talk with him. So nice, and she's never bringing that "am I cute?" thing up ever again.
Edd brought the work they did together. Marie sees Edd sitting in his seat.
Marie walked over.
"Hey, Edd!" Marie greeted, walking past Edd's desk to sit behind him, her seat.
"Morning, Marie." Edd greeted back, looking at her as she walked.
"You brought our work right?" asked Marie, sitting down, looking at the back of Edd's head. His little strands of hair that pop out of that beanie. She's always been curious to what's under it, though.
"Indeed." said Edd as he turned back to face Marie, showing the paper.
"Great!" exclaimed Marie, looking at Edd and smiling.
"Yes." said Edd, showing a light smile.
Silence between these two as they stared at each other for a few seconds.
"So, did you get sufficient sleep last night, Marie?" asked Edd, looking at his paper.
"Sure, I slept fine. Did you?" Marie asked back.
"Affirmative." said Edd, handing the paper over to Marie.
"Also, talking about last night, when I walked home, it was late, by the way, like 7 PM, I guess around that. Did you know I walk behind Ed's house to the trailer park every day?" said Marie, looking at the paper briefly before turning back to face Edd.
"Oh? You do?" asked Edd, surprised at this new piece of information.
"Yeah. Every evening when I come home, sometimes I'll hear you guys playing a game, or shouting about something in that basement. I heard some yesterday too." said Marie, smiling.
"You did?" asked Edd. Well, yesterday he was talking about her. Could it be possible that she heard what he said? His heart rate rises up.
"Yeah. Shouting. All raspy, I know that's Eddy, guaranteed." said Marie.
"Well, nothing is guaranteed. But, this is one of the rare exceptions, that was indeed Eddy, Marie." said Edd as he smiled and felt relieved.
"Yep. Man, I actually love Peach Creek at dusk, and night." said Marie.
"You do? Tell me more." said Edd.
"I like the uhm- you know the cool air, and the orange street lights at night. They're really cool, and.. I don't know, it just feels nice to be under those orange lights with no other source of light. And I like how safe it is. Heh, small town, small problems." said Marie.
"Ah, I agree. Low crime rate is a nice privilege in Peach Creek." said Edd.
"Yeah." said Marie as the teacher, Mr. Carter, then walked in
"Good morning, class." said Mr. Carter as he placed his bag down on his desk.
Edd turned back from Marie and started paying attention to the teacher.
"I'm guessing you did your work? Did any of you not?" said Mr. Carter.
No one raised their hands.
"Okay, great, I have another work. Essay. Keep it simple, no word minimum or paragraph minimum, just complete everything. So, on a piece of paper, use the same pair, help each other write about why you want that many children to raise, why you want that house, why this person does this chore and the other does this, and why you two choose to spend your time together that way." said Mr. Carter.
Silence fills the classroom.
".. Well, what are you doing? Walk to your partner and work. And try to keep it quiet." said Mr. Carter.
Some people in the class began to stand up and walk to their partners. Chattering begins.
"Oh, here, if some of you forget." said Mr. Carter as he stood up and wrote the objective needed to be completed for this work.
"When done, hand it over with the other work. I will review and give back to you to fix if anything's wrong. Any questions, just come up and ask." said Mr. Carter as he sat back down.
Light chatter fills the classroom, with people discussing and working together.
Marie got up and walked over to Edd, as he already had a piece of paper prepared.
"Okay, so." said Marie as she placed her on Edd's shoulder and looked at the piece of paper.
"So why did we choose to have two children?" said Edd, looking at Marie.
"I forgot how we agreed on that, actually." said Marie as she smiled a bit.
"I remember. I wanted two or three, you didn't know how much you wanted and later agreed on two." said Edd, as he turned back down and began to write.
"Heh. Just write down because we both agree on it then." said Marie, looking down at the paper.
"I am." said Edd, as he kept writing.
Silence accompanied by the sound of a pencil scraping continues for a bit.
"No words minimum, Double D, you don't have to write that long." said Marie.
"Just, to be safe, Marie. Come up with why we picked.. a cape cod suburban home." said Edd, still writing.
"Sooo nerdy. Man you're so cute." Marie thought as she smiled and giggled to herself.
"Uhmm.. It's like your house right?" asked Marie.
"Yes." said Edd, focused on writing.
"Because we'd stay in Peach Creek... Buy another house around or live in the one Edd has right now, which is a cape cod suburban home, so is any other houses in town." said Marie.
"Okay." said Edd, he already thought of a reason, but, not that one, but he'll write that one down, he agrees with it more than his own's. Marie surprises him once again.
"Wow, you're writing so long and so fast. How do you think of so much words?" asked Marie, as she brushed her hand down Edd's arm and then placed it on the desk.
Edd slightly shivered.
"I- Nothing unexpected from me, Marie." said Edd, as his mind went back to writing.
Marie thought, oh, he felt that touch. She didn't even realize she had brushed him.
"So, doing our own laundry and dishes, except everything else, including sweeping, taking the trash out, is shared, why?" said Edd.
"I'm like, a hundred percent sure you already thought of all the reasons why." said Marie.
"Heh. Indeed I did, I just wanted your part in the work. You can write after I finish this paragraph." said Edd.
"Okay." said Marie, as she thought to herself,
"Man, he's multi-tasking between talking to me, writing, thinking about what he's writing, and what he's going to write. Wow. No wonder I'm falling for you."
Then she watched him write for a bit.
"When I write you're gonna tell me what to write?" asked Marie.
"Yes, but don't worry it won't be as much as I wrote." said Edd.
"'Kay." exclaimed Marie.
Then she watched him write.
"His handwriting is so attractive. What am I thinking, haha. I haven't felt this much for someone in a while, and to the same person as last time? Crazy, really." Marie thought to herself, she couldn't help but smile as she watched him write, keeping up the same consistent pace as if he already knew exactly what he was going to write.
After a while, he was finished.
"My part is complete." said Edd as he jotted the last period on his paragraph, then he stood up, gesturing for Marie to sit down.
Marie then sat down as she picked up the pen that Edd had placed for her in a perfectly straight way.
"Okay, third paragraph." said Edd as he looked at the paper.
"Spill. And I don't write as fast as you, so slow down a bit. If I did, it would be unreadable, my normal handwriting's hard to read as it is." said Marie.
"Noted." said Edd as he then began to say the paragraph out for Marie.
She wrote exactly what he was telling her, word for word. The contrast in their handwriting was evident. His was refined, smooth, and round, while Marie's was jagged and sharp, full of expressiveness. Both of them noticed this.
While writing, Marie notices Edd's handwriting and thinks. He writes lowercase "a" with that little string on top like a flipped lowercase "e". Rare to see.
Throughout the writing, Edd kept a nice pace that Marie was perfectly comfortable with. It went smoothly with no "Slow down!" from Marie.
Then they both got up and stood in the slightly long line to turn the assignments in. If Edd didn't write his work so long, they would've been done already. Marie notices others' work is very short. Edd and Marie's work was noticeably longer.
"Man, we are for sure getting full marks for this." said Marie as she stood, smiling at Edd.
"Well, we should hope so." said Edd, holding their two works, stacked on each other.
"Heh. Plans for the future. Who do you think you're actually gonna end up with?" said Marie, looking at their work, with both her hands on her hips.
"I don't know." answered Edd, looking at their work.
"Like, what kind of woman? Or a guy. Are you into guys, Edd?" asked Marie, laughing a bit, though with a tiny bit of concern that he would say yes, then that'd be the silliest end of this whole ordeal.
"Haha, no, Marie. I'm heterosexual." said Edd.
"What do you think I am?" asked Marie, looking at Edd, tilting her head.
"I'd prefer not to guess, enlighten me, Marie." said Edd, looking at Marie.
"I'm bi, y'know." said Marie, looking around the room, putting her hands down.
"You are? Have you been in a romantic relationship with a woman before?" asked Edd, looking down at their work.
"Yeah, but.. it was online, never again. I was just.. experimenting I guess. But, I like guys more anyway. I have also dated someone in the school before though, a guy, but that was so brief, and it was like two years ago, lasted only three months I guess. Dude was an asshole. Never loved him." said Marie.
"Ah. Online relationships. I heard it's becoming more popular. What was your past relationships like?" said Edd, looking at Marie.
"With that girl online, she's like. I don't know, incredibly horny for some reason. I mean, I was- a little bit too- haha- but, it kinda got toxic. She's always so mad about everything. Then right after her, that guy asked me out in text, he's like a little bit handsome and I was surprised to have someone like me so I said yes, I guess. But, I never got around to actually liking him, he's like, also toxic, always mad about something." said Marie.
"Ah." exclaimed Edd.
Neither of them had noticed that Edd had avoided the question asking what kind of person he would rather end up marrying.
"You had any girls before?" asked Marie.
"I had one, actually, two years ago, possibly the same time as you. She was undoubtedly extremely intelligent, but she exhibited a disturbing lack of emotion. She asked me out because I was smart, in her words, almost as smart as her. She saw me as an equal in a world she viewed as beneath her. She's.. almost sinister. Would berate Ed and Eddy. When I brought her over to Ed's basement to hang out with my friends for the third time, she incessantly complained and explained every simple thing to my friends like they were toddlers. Condescending, rude. I cut her off that day. I appreciated her intellect, but not her lack of basic decency, I believe she didn't even view me romantically, just, an equal. Oh, almost equal." said Edd.
"I think I know who you're talking about." said Marie, looking at Edd.
"Yep." exclaimed Edd.
"That was like the talk of the school for a while. Two smartest people dating each other." said Marie. In her head, she wanted to say more, that it felt a bit horrible, "Damn, my Double D's taken." was one of her thoughts the first time the news reached her ears, like a bullet through her heart. She eventually put it to the back of her mind, though, at the time.
"Right, yeah." said Edd.
".. Jeez, what a massive bitch. How long did that last?" asked Marie.
"Two months." said Edd.
"How'd you put up with her that long?" asked Marie, as she turned to the whiteboard, noticing her and Edd's reflection off the clean whiteboard.
"I had no clue." answered Edd as he looked at the whiteboard too.
Silence filled the air between the two for a while as Marie began to adjust her hair and shirt. Wow, this whiteboard is oddly reflective. As Marie moved her bright cobalt blue hair around, Edd caught a glimpse of her face, without her right eye covered. She looked.. incredible.
"Oh, yeah! I told you I went thrifting yesterday, right?" said Marie, looking at Edd.
"Indeed, you did." said Edd.
"I thrifted these! Do you like them?" asked Marie as she pointed at her earrings, which are two halves of a broken heart.
"They're pretty, Marie." said Edd.
"These earrings connect. That's what's so cool about them." said Marie, smiling.
"I can see that." said Edd, lightly smiling.
Silence fills the air between the two, Edd staring into her eyes, Marie staring back at them, their gaze entrancing each other. Though Edd could only see one of her eyes.
Marie brushed her hair, covering her eyes a bit as she looked away. Then she tried to cool down after staring into Edd. Edd catches her exposed right eye again.
"Heh." exclaimed Edd, visibly surprised to see her other eye.
"What? My right eye?" said Marie as she turned back to the whiteboard.
"I realize now that I've never truly taken in the full extent of your face before." said Edd, looking at Marie.
"Heh. I look odd. I'm not used to seeing me with both eyes open either. I look a little weird." said Marie, holding her hair up enough to reveal her full face, turning to look at Edd.
He was bewitched. His pupils dilate.
"No- Marie. You're-" said Edd, uh.
"cute." slipped out of Edd's mouth.
"Huh?! Oh! Uhm!" exclaimed Marie out loud, and she quickly looked down, away, and everywhere, smiling widely, then she turned away from Edd to hide her face cause she felt blood rushing to her face, her skin was usually pale! This is gonna be wayyy too noticeable.
This hit her like a freight train. "Is he flirting with me? Is he?! Oh my god, maybe he also has a crush on me! Okay, come on, maybe, to his female friends, he calls them cute all the time, MAYBE? I DON'T KNOW! Just, act normal, say thanks, and. Stuff!" Marie's body was hot and heavy. She was lightly trembling just enough to be slightly noticeable by Edd.
To Edd, he was still processing what he had just said out loud. He did not even think about it when he started to say it. Must've come out of instinct, Edd thought to himself, perhaps there's a slight possibility he is falling for Marie Kanker, out of all people, not that he finds this absurd, he's glad actually, it felt right. Just that, if he were to travel back in time, tell his younger self that he would soon fall for a Marie Kanker who's charming, creative, and positive. No way young Edd would believe it. He might've even been against the idea.
Thinking logically, yes, he is indeed developing feelings for her. Why else would he say it out loud? It did not feel wrong to say it either. There is attraction, both physically and emotionally. Though he wasn't sure if she felt the same way.
All this happened in a short 5 seconds, before Edd cut the dead air.
"Oh, uh- Apologies, Marie, I did not mean to make you uncomfortable." said Edd.
"No, I-" said Marie as she turned back to Edd, and looked back down again.
Edd caught her face, he couldn't help but notice how red it had turned.
"It's fine- It's fine. Uhm- I- You're- I'm not uncomfortable." Marie stuttered over her words.
"Okay. I'm glad, then." said Edd.
"You can compliment me." said Marie. She wants to know if he was flirting with her or not.
Edd scratched the back of his head.
"Were you trying to flirt?" asked Marie boldly. Looking back at Edd, her face now rosy instead of red.
"No! No. That was a compliment." said Edd, looking at Marie. Knowing he lied.
"Oh, okay." said Marie. Damn. He wasn't.
Marie decides to push it further, a little voice in her head was still hopeful that he could be lying.
"If you're trying to flirt, just say it, dork. Don't be shy." said Marie in a friendly tone, dragging out the last word spoken for a bit. Displaying her confidence, after her state of mind calmed down, though she could still feel her heart beating so hard it felt like it was trying to crawl its way out of her ribcage.
"I wasn't." said Edd. He did not want to be in this situation.
"Hmph. Okay." said Marie. Damn. As she turned away from Edd, she faced the person in front of her in the line.
Silence between the two, as Marie is trying to hide the slight disappointment in her face, while Edd is feeling all guilty for making Marie uncomfortable. She could have been lying when she said she said she wasn't.
He scratched the back of his head.
Then he felt a light tap on his shoulder. Edd turns back.
"Bro, you almost got her." whispered Dylan, the troublesome loner, in line behind Edd.
"Mhm, my goal was not "to get her", Dylan." Edd whispered back.
CHAPTER 9 END
