Timeskip (next day)*
Ayanokouji yawned as he made his way towards the school building. After his little incident with Kinoshita, she didn't message Ayanokouji and asked him about their morning jogging session. Ayanokouji figured that he will eventually need to face Kinoshita and resolve the issue. The Ayanokouji group discussed walking to school together and it seems that everyone agreed to do it tomorrow.
The early morning was beautiful and peaceful as students made their way towards the school building. He was walking by until he heard a familiar sound that he heard before. It was a soft, rhythmic sound as it sounds like wheels rolling over the pavement. The sound is low and consistent and gradually grew louder as it got closer to Ayanokouji. Then, he heard a soft thud noise and the sound of wheels stopped as a voice called out to him.
"Yo, what's up Ayanokouji?" said Okabe.
It seems that Okabe was skating to school and stopped when she recognized Ayanokouji. Okabe is wearing a black hoodie over her standard white school uniform and is not wearing her standard issued red blazer. Ayanokouji could see that her hair was a little messy and ruffled up as if she recently got out of bed and didn't even bother combing her hair.
"Good morning, Okabe. I see that you're skating to school." said Ayanokouji, glancing down at the skateboard.
"Yep. The school allows us only if I don't run over people." said Okabe.
"I hope that was a joke."
"Who knows? But I'm 80% sure that I won't hit someone."
'Stop. Is my line really that popular? It should be used this much.' thought Ayanokouji. He gave Okabe a side glance before she cleared her throat and corrected herself.
"Actually 95%." said Okabe.
"That sounds reassuring." said Ayanokouji.
Okabe placed her foot on the tail of the skateboard and launched it towards her and made sure that it stopped before it smashed into her legs and caught it in the air with her hands. With that, she managed to pick up the skateboard and began walking with it as she walked with Ayanokouji. Okabe noticed that Ayanokouji was looking at her skateboard.
"Are you interested in trying again? I mean you can go ahead." said Okabe.
"I'm not in a mood to embarrass myself in front of everyone." said Ayanokouji.
"Hahaha! You have a point and also we don't want another accident like last time which could hurt someone."
"Please don't remind me of that."
"Haha! I hope you don't get too discouraged. Let's do our best."
"Sure."
As the duo got closer to the building, Okabe was spinning her skateboard as she was doing it naturally and without even paying attention to it which showed off her affinity with her skateboard. Ayanokouji could see the designs of the skateboard more closely and could see that the board and wheels seemed to be worn down and used frequently.
"The wheels and board seemed to be quite old. How often do you change them?" asked Ayanokouji.
"Ahh… I keep the board. It's actually the old board that I have had since middle school. But I change the wheels and treks every couple of years. That's what I like to do, but it depends on how much you skate." said Okabe.
"They looked quite worn down."
"Errr… I might have taken a few falls, but these are newish wheels and treks. I got them at the beginning of the school year."
"You must've skated a lot if it looks this worn out."
Okabe and Ayanokouji chatted a little more about skateboarding as they entered the school building and passed through the hallways. The duo stopped when it got to the action of the hallway where they would have to separate and go to their respective classrooms.
"Well… See you, Okabe." said Ayanokouji. He turned away and took a few steps before Okabe called out to him.
"Wait, Ayanokouji! It seems that you're interested in skateboarding. If you want, we could go check out the skate shop." said Okabe.
"Hmm… I suppose that would be interesting, but let's save it for another day."
"I guess there's no need to rush it. You know where to find me."
"Yeah."
"See ya, Ayanokouji."
With that, Ayanokouji and Okabe departed from each other and headed to their respective classrooms. He wondered if Ryuuen was purposely sending girls like Shiina, Okabe, and the other Class C girls that he had been meeting to him to get information out of him or if it was merely a coincidence. Ayanokouji was sure that Ryuuen probably would've noticed that his female classmates were interacting and hanging out with him. Ayanokouji tried not to ponder too much about it as he entered the classroom.
As Ayanokouji was heading towards his desk, Mii-chan, Azuma, and Ichihashi greeted him as he stopped and chatted with them for a few moments. They seemed to be discussing the Paper Shuffle special exam and their topics that they are struggling with. Although they also seemed to be concerned about Ayanokouji, since he and Inogashira were in danger of being expelled due to Inogashira's low scores and Ayanokouji's average scores.
Ayanokouji reassured them he would be fine and Suzune wouldn't have placed them together if she knew that they wouldn't have the chance to pass together. They looked somewhat reassured and relieved by Ayanokouji's statement, but there were some lingering doubts as they didn't want to see Ayanokouji be expelled. They chatted for a few more minutes before Ayanokouji had to go back to his seat as homeroom was nearing.
As Ayanokouji was on his way to his seat, he noticed that Kushida was staring at him and seemed to be in a trance and was ignoring the girls in her group. They were puzzled by Kushida's lack of response and were puzzled by it as they tried to follow her gaze. Kushida averted her eyes when she noticed that Ayanokouji was looking in her general direction.
'Interesting. Ever since Kushida revealed her past and connection with Suzune, she hasn't gone to my room to vent her frustrations yet. Although she does come over quite frequently and almost every day, it seems that she's avoiding me for the time being.' thought Ayanokouji.
As Ayanokouji sat down, he greeted Suzune, who looked up from her notebook, greeted him briefly, and seemed quite busy in her notebook. He glanced over and saw that she was writing some notes along with dates and time. It looked like Suzune was quite meticulous and is planning her study sessions out. He decided not to bother her and fell into silence as he stared at the blackboard. After a few moments, Suzune finished what she was writing and she closed her notebook before turning her attention to Ayanokouji.
"If you don't mind me asking, how's progress with the study group?" asked Suzune.
"Are you expecting daily reports now?" asked Ayanokouji.
"Of course not. I saw that Sakura-san joined your study group with Yukimura-kun, Miyake-kun, and Hasebe-san."
"Airi joined us because she wanted to improve her scores. You know that she's quite shy and wanted to avoid joining a big study group."
Ayanokouji didn't want to tell Suzune the real reason that Airi joined since it wasn't his business to tell her about Airi's personal reason and her desire to grow as a person. It wasn't his place to tell Suzune that and he was interested to see her growth under his watch.
"Airi? If I'm not mistaken, that's Sakura-san's first name?" asked Suzune, raising her eyebrows and Ayanokouji thought he could see a hint of uneasiness and shock on Suzune's face. However, it lasted for a bored moment before it changed quickly back to her usual stern face.
"Yeah. That's our group's rule: to call each other by our first name." said Ayanokouji.
"Aren't you getting a bit close?" muttered Suzune. Her voice was quiet and she only muttered to herself and Ayanokouji didn't catch what she was saying.
Ayanokouji could detect a small hint of jealousy from Suzune as she's no longer the only girl that Ayanokouji called by her first name. Suzune could feel slightly jealous and annoyed knowing the fact that Ayanokouji is calling Haruka and Airi by their first names. Of course, Suzune didn't know that Ayanokouji had been calling Nanami by her first name too, but he wasn't going to correct her on that.
"What was that?" asked Ayanokouji.
"N-Nothing. I suppose helping Sakura-san would be beneficial and crucial for improving her scores. Although I wished that she joined one of our study sessions…" said Suzune.
"You know that kind of environment will harm her more than benefit her."
"I suppose you're right. What about Inogashira-san?"
"I've got a rough idea of her abilities and working on how to improve her scores."
"Please let me know if you require any assistance."
Ayanokouji was surprised that Suzune was being quite helpful. She was even going out of her way to help Inogashira even though she was doing her usual study sessions. Ayanokouji could see the growth as the Suzune from a few months ago would've refused and even hoped to get rid of any classmates that she deemed as defective.
"I see, but I believe that I can handle it. Thanks for offering." said Ayanokouji.
"I suppose I can trust and leave you up to the task at hand." replied Suzune.
"It's surprising to see you concerned about Inogashira. It's almost like you're sad to see me get expelled."
"Don't flatter yourself, Kiyotaka-kun. As if I would get troubled over a troublesome individual like you. I simply don't want to lose the deal that you and I had and reach Class A."
"I see… Is this what Sotomura calls a tsundere?"
"What in the world did you just call me?"
Suzune was confused by what Ayanokouji said and was not familiar with that term at all. She had the feeling that it wasn't a good word to describe and scowled at Ayanokouji for calling her that. In return, Ayanokouji just shrugged and refused to elaborate further about the term, tsundere. Suzune decided to keep that word in her mind and find out what it means later as the homeroom bell rang and Chabashira-sensei entered the classroom.
Timeskip (lunch time)*
The bell rang again and it signaled the beginning of lunch time. Ayanokouji's classmates began leaving the classroom together or with their usual groups. Others stayed in the classroom, but it seems the classroom has become lively as soon as Mashima-sensei left the classroom and his instructions ended. It was a brief moment of freedom from a tedious school day for the students.
Ayanokouji noticed that Sudou, Yamauchi, and Ike had gotten together as usual, but they were holding their notebooks and glanced over at Suzune. Suzune noticed and gestured for them to wait before turning to Ayanokouji.
"I'm sorry to ask for a favor, but this shouldn't take much time." said Suzune, reaching into her bag and taking out a library book. She placed it on Ayanokouji's desk as he stared at the title cover.
"Didn't you say last week that you wanted to read this?" continued Suzune.
The duo had a conversation about Raymond Chandler's books and Suzune coincidentally had the library copy of one of his books. Ayanokouji was interested in it and wanted to read it again, so she agreed to give it to him when she finished the book.
"Farewell, My Lovely, huh?" said Ayanokouji. He had checked the library for another copy while waiting for Suzune to finish, but it seemed strangely popular and is always checked out. It seemed that Suzune had given it to him as per their agreement.
"I'm impressed that you managed to snag it from the library. Are you finished?" asked Ayanokouji.
Ayanokouji thought that Suzune should've returned it so it could go to the next person on the waiting list. But this seemed like the most reliable method of getting it. Ayanokouji thought it was an underhanded way, but he wasn't complaining and had no intentions of waiting.
"Yes, however it's also due back today. I was hoping you could take it to the library for me, then check it out for yourself. As you can see, I have a study session to attend to." said Suzune.
"I see. I suppose if I want to read it, I would need to put in the effort." replied Ayanokouji.
'This will save Suzune the time and effort of having to return the book herself. You needed a student ID card when you wanted to check out a book, so trying to check out a book in someone else's name would be impossible. On the other hand, you didn't need to present anything if you were simply returning a book.' thought Ayanokouji.
"Thank you. I don't care when you return it, as long as it's sometime today. If I hear that it's overdue, I'll be coming for you." said Suzune, adding one final threat.
"I know. I'll go right now." replied Ayanokouji, picking up the book.
'I hadn't borrowed a book from the library before, but I understood the process. If a book was overdue, private points were deducted from your account.' thought Ayanokouji. Ayanokouji stood up from his desk and before he could make his way towards the exit of the classroom, Suzune spoke up.
"As a thank you for the favor, I'll treat you to a meal in the future." said Suzune.
"Okay." replied Ayanokouji, calmly. However, Ayanokouji seemed to be excitedly anticipating more of Suzune's food since it's been a while since he had her home cooked meal.
'Free food? How can I refuse?' thought Ayanokouji.
With those happy, exciting, and highly anticipated thoughts, Ayanokouji headed out of the classroom and into the busy hallway. Students are moving in both directions, away and towards Ayanokouji. Some of them headed towards the direction of the cafeteria and exit while others headed towards their respective classrooms with various food and drinks in their hands. However, Ayanokouji took the stairs and headed towards the direction of the library.
When Ayanokouji entered the library, he noticed that it was surprisingly empty at lunch and seemed like a cozy little hideaway. Students weren't allowed to eat in here, so only a few people were around, guaranteeing that the return process would go smoothly.
"Since I'm already here, I might as well check out another book." muttered Ayanokouji.
With Farewell, My Lovely in one hand, Ayanokouji walked over to the mystery section, hoping to find another of Raymond Chandler's works. As Ayanokouji arrived there, he saw a lone female student struggling to grab a book on a high shelf. When Ayanokouji got closer, he could see the book was Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë. A book that Ayanokouji was familiar with and read multiple times.
'A masterpiece penned by the middle of the three Brontë sisters, all of whom were literary legends. A conventional blurb could make that book sound like a mystery, but wouldn't it have fit better in the romance section?' thought Ayanokouji.
Ayanokouji noticed that Wuthering Heights was perched at a strange angle and is just barely within reach which might explain why the girl wasn't using the step stool. Ayanokouji stood in front of her and grabbed the book.
"Sorry, I don't mean to butt in, but… Wait a minute. You're from Class C. You're..." said Ayanokouji, his voice trailing off.
Ayanokouji froze when he got a better look at the girl. He was focused on Wuthering Heights and its precarious position on the shelf rather than the girl. The girl is Shiina Hiyori., the girl that was with Ryuuen yesterday at the Pallet. It seemed that she recognized Ayanokouji.
"You're Ayanokouji-kun, right?" asked Shiina.
"Yeah. Here you go." said Ayanokouji, grabbing and handing her the book.
"Thank you very much."
"Do you like her work? Brontë?"
"I don't really like or dislike the book. It was in the wrong section, so I thought I'd return it to its proper place."
"I see."
"By the way, that book you have… Farewell, My Lovely, right? It's wonderful."
Ayanokouji noticed that Shiina's eyes started to sparkle when she's talking about books. Her liveliness seemed to have increased exponentially and she looked like a different person as she gave Ayanokouji a bright smile.
"I managed to borrow it from a friend of mine today." said Ayanokouji.
"Wow, that's lucky. It seems as though Raymond Chandler's quite popular among the second-year students. I've been wanting to reread it myself, but I wasn't able to find a copy today." replied Shiina. Her lively mood seemed to have dimmed a bit and Ayanokouji suddenly had the urge to pet her in the head in an attempt to liven up her mood.
"I guess it was bad of me to borrow it from a friend."
"It's all right. I've already read it. Besides, I was fortunate enough to find another good book while I searched for that one. The school library's quite large. If I tried to read everything on its shelves, I'd probably graduate before I could finish."
clutched Brontë's book tightly as if it was her most valuable possession and her life line, but she also had a small smile on her face.
"Yeah. You're probably right. Sorry for disturbing you, by the way." said Ayanokouji.
Ayanokouji thought that Shiina came to the library instead of eating during lunch break and believed that she probably didn't want to waste time chatting to a student from another class. Ayanokouji decided to leave her be, but it seems that Shiina had other plans in mind.
"If you just came to return Farewell, My Lovely and then borrow it for yourself, you could've done that at the service desk. Are you looking for another book to check out?" asked Shiina, stopping Ayanokouji in his tracks before he could leave.
"I thought I'd come back and try another time, so..." replied Ayanokouji.
His voice trailed off as he saw Shiina's eyes were already scanning the mystery section as if it's a spotlight from a boat scanning the ocean's surface in a dark, stormy night. Her eyes remained vigilant and bright as they bounced around to the bookshelves and rested on each book for a brief moment.
"Hey, what are you doing?" asked Ayanokouji.
"Have you already read Dorothy L. Sayers?" asked Shiina. She replaced Ayanokouji's question with her own.
"No. I've read Christie, but not Sayers."
"In that case, I would most definitely recommend Whose Body? That's the first book in the series featuring Lord Peter. If you read that book, you'll inevitably want to read the rest."
Shiina reached over and pulled several books from the shelves before showing them to Ayanokouji. He gave them a quick glance and saw that Shiina had given him the entire series. Shiina's behavior left Ayanokouji puzzled as he struggled to figure out how to respond.
"I'm sorry, I was rambling. Am I bothering you?" asked Shiina.
Her eyes widened at the realization at what she did and she thought she was being too assertive and overwhelming Ayanokouji with all of those books that she gave him. Shinna's face turned slightly pink out of embarrassment.
"No. I was just a little surprised. Since I'm already here, I might as well grab some more books." said Ayanokouji.
"Sure."
Shiina looked extraordinarily happy. She smiled so widely that her eyes scrunched up. All of the embarrassment that she had was instantly gone when Ayanokouji agreed to get some of the books that she had recommended. Ayanokouji could tell that she genuinely likes reading and books, but he still had to keep his guard up due to Shiina's close proximity to Ryuuen.
"The lunch break isn't over, right? Would you like to eat with me?" asked Shiina.
"Huh?" muttered Ayanokouji. Ayanokouji's guard was already up, but he became more alarmed and now wondered if it's a trap since it seems too much of a coincidence for Shiina to randomly ask him out for lunch.
"No one in Class C likes reading, so I don't really have anyone to talk to."
"Won't this cause trouble? Class C is currently hunting someone in Class D, right? I feel like I'm on the list of suspects."
"Please don't worry. I just play along so that Ryuuen doesn't bother me. I've never been interested in conflict. Or is it that you think talking with me will be a problem on its own?"
"No, not really. I have no personal issues with you."
"I'm glad. I wouldn't want our classes to clash over something so trivial. I'd prefer we all get along."
"Interesting…"
'Considering that this school was designed to foster competition, her hopes were doomed to failure. Still, most students acted as if this were a normal high school. Hirata and Kushida, for instance, were popular because they showed no favoritism in how they interacted with classmates.' thought Ayanokouji.
"Well, should we go? Time is wasting." said Shiina.
"Let me head to the service desk and take care of these first." replied Ayanokouji, remembering Suzune's threat and promise of a free meal.
Ayanokouji couldn't have predicted this would all result from a simple library visit as he visited the service desk, returned Suzune's book, and checked out the book for himself using his student ID. Afterwards, Ayanokouji and Shinna made their way to the cafeteria.
It took the duo a few minutes to arrive at the cafeteria. When they arrived, the cafeteria was packed. Most students were already seated and eating their lunch with hardly anyone in line to get a meal ticket. Ayanokouji chose the daily special, but Shiina seemed unable to come to a decision. Her finger hovered over the buttons, and she looked at all the options carefully. Ayanokouji watched in silence as she had a cute, concentrated expression on her face as it looks like she's taking this too seriously.
"Sorry, sorry..." said Shiina. Her face turned slightly red out of embarrassment at how long she was taking, but Ayanokouji nodded his head and waited. He waited another two minutes. Finally, Shinna ended up choosing the same meal as Ayanokouji.
"Sorry. I'm so indecisive." said Shiina, sheepishly as she averted her eyes from Ayanokouji.
"No worries. It's not like there was anyone in line behind us." replied Ayanokouji.
After the meal machine printed out their meal tickets, the duo turned in their tickets and two exact-looking meals were placed on the counter by the staff. Shiina struggled to adjust her school bag to take her tray and Ayanokouji noticed that it was abnormally large and seemed heavy. He wondered what was in Shiina's bag, but decided not to pry.
"Your bag's in the way. Here, let me." said Ayanokouji.
"Oh no, I couldn't bother you with it..." said Shiina.
"Don't worry about it. You don't want to fall and drop your tray."
"Sorry."
Shiina handed over her bag and when Ayanokouji grabbed the straps and picked it up, he could feel the immense weight from the bag. Ayanokouji wondered if Shiina carried all her textbooks in her school bag.
"It's a lot, isn't it? Thank you very much." said Shiina. Ayanokouji nodded and wasn't that troubled by all of that weight.
The duo searched for an empty table and avoided the crowds during their search. Eventually, they found an empty table and sat across from one another. Ayanokouji gently set Shiina's school bag off to the side and against the cafeteria's wall.
"Do you usually eat in the cafeteria?" asked Ayanokouji.
"No. I usually buy lunch from the convenience store in the morning and then eat in the classroom. Do you come here often, Ayanokouji-kun?" replied Shiina.
"Convenience store food isn't my favorite. Food tastes best when it's freshly made."
Shiina used her chopsticks to elegantly raise a morsel of food to her mouth. Ayanokouji watched her in admiration as she handled her chopsticks with such grace.
"Hmm, I see. The cafeteria food certainly is delicious, isn't it? I'll keep that in mind." replied Shiina.
"This isn't your first time eating here, is it?" asked Ayanokouji.
"Looks like I've been found out."
"I was thinking that that might be the case, since you struggled to choose at the ticket machine."
"I've always wanted to try it, but if you miss out on your initial chance to do something, you kind of drag your feet, don't you? I figured this was a good chance to go."
"Does that mean you'll come here again?"
"Yes."
Shiina and Ayanokouji continued to talk while they finished their lunches. Luckily, Ayanokouji was used to and became quite knowledgeable when having small talks with girls since he already experienced it with different types of girls from different classes.
Since the duo had come in later than most people in the cafeteria, most other students finished and left already. A few hung back to chat idly, or to take their time savoring their food. Shiina began going through her heavy school bag.
"I think I'll head back to the library. Have you read any of these before, Ayanokouji-kun?" asked Shiina, taking a couple of books from her bag and placing them on the table. Ayanokouji glanced at the book covers and could recognize most of them.
"William Irish, Ellery Queen, Lawrence Block, and Isaac Asimov. Wow. You've got good taste." said Ayanokouji.
"You know them?" asked Shiina. Ayanokouji could hear a hint of excitement from Shiina's voice.
"Yeah. I like mystery novels."
"Is that so?"
Shiina laughed and clapped her hands out of pure excitement and joy. Ayanokouji took a closer look at the books and suddenly realized that there was something off about the books. There were no barcodes or tags that showed the books as property of the school library.
"Wait. These aren't from the library, are they?" asked Ayanokouji.
"They're from my personal collection. I've been walking around with them, hoping I'd meet someone who shared my tastes and would want to borrow them. I started out just carrying one, but I suppose I accumulated more and more books while waiting to find that certain someone." explained Shiina.
"Is that so?"
Ayanokouji found it quite strange and odd as Shiina's painstakingly actions were far from normal and not the standard way to make friends or people with similar interests. But Ayanokouji wasn't the expert and his ways are not exactly normal as well.
"Please, don't hold back. Take whichever you'd like." said Shiina.
"Well... I suppose I'll check out Ellery Queen, since I haven't read any of his." said Ayanokouji.
"Go ahead."
"Thank you."
Ayanokouji grabbed the copy of Ellery Queen and added it on top of Suzune's book. Before Ayanokouji could continue with the conversation, he saw someone that he was looking and luckily, the conversation between Shiina and himself seemed to be ending and he already finished his lunch.
"I'll return it back to you when I'm done with it, Shiina." said Ayanokouji.
"Please don't worry about it, Ayanokouji-kun. I'm not in a rush to get it back. Just please take care of it and enjoy." said Shiina, with a gentle smile.
"Okay. I have to go now. I have someone to meet."
"Oh, okay! You know where to meet me, right?"
"The library?"
"Yeah… Thank you for talking to me, Ayanokouji-kun. Goodbye."
"See you around, Shiina."
Ayanokouji thought he could hear a disappointed and sad tone from Shiina's voice as if she wasn't expecting Ayanokouji to leave so suddenly and looked like she wanted to talk to Ayanokouji more. But, Ayanokouji left Shiina as the person that he saw was leaving the cafeteria. He managed to dump all of the trash and crumbs from his empty tray into the trash can and placed the tray on top of it before making his way towards the exit, following the person he saw.
When Ayanokouji entered the hallway, he could see her rounding the corner and Ayanokouji had to push through a small crowd, following her. When Ayanokouji rounded the corner, he could hear her talking to someone else and he hid around the corner, making sure not to reveal himself. Ayanokouji had the feeling that it was something that he shouldn't be eavesdropping on and is a private conversation.
"What have you called me here, Kinoshita-san?" asked Suzune. Her tone was one of confusion, but filled with curiosity.
"Relax, Horikita-san. Ryuuen-kun is not around. I called you out of my free will." said Kinoshita.
"Is there any way to prove it? Show me your phone."
"I guess after what happened, you'll be doubtful. Fine, here."
There were a few brief moments of silence as it sounded like Suzune was studying Kinoshita's phone before a response came from Suzune.
"Good. It seems like nothing is recording. Now… Why have you called me here?" asked Suzune, repeating her previous question.
"Hah… This is going to hurt, but I'm gonna have to do it otherwise it's going to bother me for the rest of my time here." said Kinoshita.
"What are you-"
"Horikita Suzune, I sincerely apologize for my actions! What I did was inexcusable and destroyed your chances to do well for the sports festival. And my chances of showing off my training… It was inexcusable and I shouldn't have ever followed Ryuuen-kun's plan!"
It was a Japanese formal apology and changed a bit to fit the context. Kinsohita bowed her head low and her posture was bent at a perfect 90 degrees angle. Kinoshita's apology was loud and firm as Ayanokouji could hear that her voice was a little shaky and emotional as she uttered her apologies. Ayanokouji was with Kinoshita and when they were running, he noticed that she often stared off during their breaks. It was a disappointed, regretful, and remorseful look on her face, but Ayanokouji never asked about it because he didn't want to pry into Kinoshita's feelings and he had the feeling that it wasn't his place to ask and get involved.
"Why are you apologizing right now? You had a few weeks to do it, yet you waited this long. " asked Suzune.
"I-I… I don't want things to end up like that. I-It's was just… I-I was scared that if I did, R-Ryuuen-kun would find out." stammered Kinoshita.
'It would seem Ryuuen has instilled fear within his classmates and used them as pawns. I would doubt that Kinoshita would testify to the school about what truly happened. Her testimony wouldn't be enough especially with the lack of evidence to prove it. Also… Kinoshita's fear and Ryuuen's retaliation keeps her in check and prevents her from revealing anything about his plans during the sports festival. The fact that Kinoshita is making an apology to Suzune is basically admitting that she wasn't injured by Suzune during the sports festival and it was all part of Ryuuen's scheme. Of course, she wouldn't admit it publicly, but apologizing to Suuzne is her admission of guilt.' thought Ayanokouji.
There were a few moments of silence as it seemed the two girls seemed to be digesting what Kinoshita said. Ayanokouji sneakily around the corner and saw that Kinoshita was averting her eyes from Suzune and Suzune staring at her in mild shock and confusion as if she was shocked that Kinoshita was actually apologizing after all this time and how that she misjudged Kinoshita for her previous actions against her.
Suzune knew that Kinoshita would never admit the truth since she denied it and was willing to testify against her. She was clearly not expecting an apology, but she seemed to be pondering about it before responding.
"I accept your apology, Kinoshita-san. However, I only wished that you apologized to me earlier. However, it was all Ryuuen-kun's schemes and you merely just followed along with it. Let bygones be bygones." said Suzune. Ayanokouji was surprised that she easily forgave Kinoshita, but she was right that Ryuuen was the mastermind and he was the one behind everything.
"T-Thank you, Horikita-san. P-Please don't tell Ryuuen-kun about this." pleaded Kinoshita.
"I doubt that he cares about it, but I will refrain from telling him about this."
"T-Thank you!"
The two girls fell into silence yet again and it seemed that they didn't know how to continue this conversation after Kinoshita had completed her goal of an apology. That peaceful and tranquil silence had a few more moments before Kinoshita cleared her throat.
"I'll be going now, Horikita-san." said Kinoshita.
"All right. Goodbye, Kinoshita-san." said Suzune.
"See you around. By the way, I would like to race against you without any interruptions. I wanna see who's faster."
"Hmm.. Perhaps. It will depend if your leg is fine."
"Ahh! I forgot about that! See ya later, Horikita-san!"
Ayanokouji could hear Kinoshita approaching him and heading towards his direction while he could hear Suzune heading in the opposite direction. As Kinoshita's footsteps grew louder and approached him, Suzune's footsteps grew softer and slowly faded away as Kinoshita's footsteps grew louder. Ayanokouji glanced around and realized that he has nowhere to hide and run since it's a hallway and he would easily be spotted.
Before Ayanokouji could decide what to do next, Kinoshita rounded the corner and ran into Ayanokouji. Kinoshita stumbled backwards and began falling with a surprised expression on her face. Ayanokouji lunged forward and managed to grab Kinoshita's wrist and pulled her towards him, using the momentum to prevent Kinoshita from falling backwards and towards him where he could easily catch her.
Luckily for Ayanokouji and Kinoshita, Ayanokouji's plan succeeded and Kinoshita avoided falling backwards and hitting the ground. However, another problem arose as Kinoshita's body slammed into Ayanokouji's body as the momentum carried over when Ayanokouji grabbed Kinoshita's wrist and pulled her forwards. This left them in close proximity to each other and in a compromising position.
Ayanokouji could feel the warmth emitting from Kinoshita's body as he could feel the softness of her breasts pushed up against him. The sports bra that she was wearing is also intensifying the softness and pressure of Kinoshita's breasts against Ayanokouji's body. Ayanokouji maintained his straight face and knew that any other guy would've been super uncomfortable or really turned on if they were in this compromising situation as he basically could feel the pleasures from her body.
On the other hand, Kinoshita's heart rate increased at an abnormal rate as the close proximity was not good for her heart and mind. She was embarrassed, happy, and felt shameful at the same time due to her close proximity with Ayanokouji, especially out in public. Kinoshita hoped that she wasn't spotted in a position like that with Ayanokouji, especially someone from her class as she didn't want Ryuuen to know since he's looking for someone from Class D. The last thing Kinoshita wanted was to be forced by Ryuuen to spy on Ayanokouji for him and after the incident with Suzune during the sports festival, Kinoshita was not in the mood to do it again and did not want to involve Ayanokouji.
Ayanokouji quickly glanced around and saw the hallway which had a few students. Ayanokouji was lucky that not many students are present in this hallway as it usually has a high volume of traffic. A few students raised their eyebrows at the duo and some even pointed and whispered to each other. Ayanokouji hurriedly removed himself from Kinoshita, whose face was flushed with a crimson, bright red color. This is the most flustered that Ayanokouji had seen Kinoshita as even her ears are the same shade of red as her face.
"A-Ayanokouji-kun! W-What are you doing here? Did you hear?' asked Kinoshita.
Kinoshita's tone was surprised and demanding at the same time as she didn't expect for Ayanokouji to be here and eavesdropped on her private conversation with Suzune. Ayanokouji stared at Kinoshita, who averted her eyes and hung her head down to avoid Ayanokouji's gaze.
'Why?! Why is he here?! It was to end my beef with Horikita-san and that was all! Now Ayanokouji-kun probably knows why I did it! I… I don't want him to know! I really don't! He probably hates me now. Why did this happen to me?' thought Kinoshita.
Kinoshita averted her eyes from Ayanokouji because she didn't want to see the expression on his face and couldn't bear to look at him. Even though Ayanokouji always has a blank look on his face, Kinoshita was worried that she might have a weird look on her face or say something that she shouldn't if they made eye contact.
Ayanokouji could see that Kinoshita was extremely agitated and anxious by catching Ayanokouji eavesdropping on her private conversation. He could tell that Kinoshita already knew that he eavesdropped on their conservation and claiming that he didn't hear anything would probably make everything worse.
"I'm sorry, Kinoshita. It wasn't my intention to eavesdrop. I was trying to talk to you, but noticed that you were busy talking with Suzune." said Ayanokouji.
"S-Suzune?" muttered Kinoshita, quietly.
Kinoshita couldn't believe that Ayanokouji was calling Suzune by her first anime and clearly unestimated their relationship. She thought they were just classmates, but it seems that she needs to reevaluate their relationship and how close they are.
"I-If you don't mind me asking, what's your relationship with Horikita-san?" asked Kinoshita.
"Huh?" replied Ayanokouji. He was expecting to explain to Kinoshita on how his intention was not to eavesdropped on their conversation, but it seems that the topic of the conversation has changed.
"D-Don't make me repeat myself!"
"Uhh… I'm not dating Suzune. She just wanted me to call her by her first name. I guess you can say that Suzune was my first friend in the school."
"Y-You're that close?!"
"I suppose you can see it that way."
"I-I see…"
There was a long, but awkward silence between the duo. Ayanokouji noticed that Kinoshita seemed to be shrinking down and realized that it was the perfect opportunity to finish his business with Kinoshita.
"Kinoshita, about what you said to Suzune…" said Ayanokouji.
"You heard, didn't you? You hate me, don't you? After what I did to Horikita-san and because of my selfish actions…" said Kinoshita, averting her eyes from Ayanokouji.
After confirming that Ayanokouji and Suzune had a closer relationship than herself and Ayanokouji, Kinoshita believed that Ayanokouji would despise or become wary of her because of her actions against Suzune. Kinoshita clenched her fist tightly and she could feel her nails pierce her skin as she anxiously waited for Ayanokouji's response.
"Kinoshita, I understand. You already apologized to Suzune and I don't hate you for it. Even though it took you a while to apologize to her, you still did it despite the fact that it's been a long time since the sports festival. It shows that you were bothered by your actions and still wanted to apologize despite all of his time. Why would I hate you? It was also not really your fault because it was all Ryuuen's scheme. You also didn't have much of a choice since Ryuuen ordered you."
"But Ryuuen-kun promised me private points if I did it!"
"Do you think Ryuuen would give you the points? You were fooled and were a pawn to his scheme."
"..."
There was a brief silence between Ayanokouji and Kinoshita as it seems that Kinoshita seems to be processing what Ayanokouji said. He could see the gears turning in her head as her face scrunched up.
"I-I think you may be right. God! I'm such an idiot!" said Kinoshita.
"And there's one more thing I have to say to you, Kinoshita." saidAyanokouji.
Kinoshita held her breath as she waited anxiously for what Ayanokouji was going to say next. She was sure that her heart could take any more of this as Ayanokouji stared into her eyes. Kinoshita tried her best to meet his eyes, but managed to hold her gaze for a few brief seconds before averting her eyes. Kinoshita thought Ayanokouji was going to say some more things about her apology to Suzune, but Ayanokouji had something else in mind.
"I'm sorry, Kinoshita. I didn't mean what I said yesterday. I was just glad that you are recovering and getting back into shape despite your leg injury. I do not wish to end our morning sessions together and misspoke." said Ayanokouji, bowing his head.
Kinoshita, who was shocked by Ayanokouji's sudden apology, was flabbergasted and immediately looked up in surprise and shock. She began waving her hands frantically.
"N-No! You don't have to apologize, Ayanokouji-kun! I-It was my fault for jumping to conclusion!" said Kinoshita as she replayed the events that happened yesterday and saw the errors in her ways.
"We could just agree that it's our fault for causing the situation in the first place."
"Yeah…. Let's do that."
It seems that Ayanokouji and Kinoshita managed to resolve their little mishap. The duo fell into silence as their mishap cleared and they said everything that they wanted to say.
"A-Ayanokouji-kun… let's run again later?" asked Kinoshita, taking the first step.
"Sure." replied Ayanokouji.
Ayanokouji responded simply and it seems that everything is returning back to normal as if their relationship hadn't changed at all. However, Ayanokouji has gotten more insight on Kinoshita after witnessing her apology to Suzune. The duo left together and headed towards their respective classroom as lunch time was quickly ending.
Kinoshita said her goodbyes and Ayanokouji promised to meet tomorrow morning for their daily running sessions before she left toward the direction of Class C. Ayanokouji watched the retreating figure of Kinoshita for a few moments before heading towards the direction of Class D.
Timeskip (after school)*
The after school bell rang and students began leaving by themselves or with their usual group. Others stayed behind and chatted with each other or were looking at their phones. It seemed that everyone was relieved and happy that school was over.
Ayanokouji watched as Suzune left with Sudou, Ike, and Yamauchi as it was their usual study group. He overheard Sudou saying that he will be taking a break from the basketball club to study which is a drastic action for Sudou, who loved basketball and hated study. Sudou is also taking a huge risk by taking time off the basketball club since he's one of the starters for the team and could risk being kicked off due to his lack of participation. But Sudou's admiration for Suzune was powerful and Ayanokouji could see that he's really motivated since he put studying over basketball.
"Hey, Kiyotaka. Are you ready?" asked Akito.
Akito was with Yukimura and Airi as the trio approached Ayanokouji's desk. Ayanokouji was busy looking around to not notice the approaching trio, but he nodded his head and stood up to join them. The group began heading towards the exit and some of their classmates stared curiously at the unusual group. Even some of Ayanokouji's soulmates also gave him a second glance and it seems most of them were directed at Airi, who shrank away as she was embarrassed by some of the attention that she's getting.
"Where's Haruka?" asked Ayanokouji, noticing that one of their members was missing. Haruka wasn't in the classroom and Ayanokouji was sure that he saw her leave as soon as the bell rang.
"H-Haruka-chan went to the bathroom. She said she's going to join us when she's done." replied Airi.
"I see…"
The group entered the hallway and headed towards the exit of the school building. The bathrooms are located towards the direction of the exit and since they're going to be there, they figured that it would be more convenient and efficient to go there. The group passed the bathrooms and waited near the exit for Haruka to finish in the bathroom. After a few minutes, Haruka emerged from the bathroom and eventually joined the group. The group began making their way to the Keiyaki Mall.
"It kinda feels exciting to go out with everyone...K-Kiyotaka-kun," said Airi, who's walking next to Ayanokouji. She sounded reserved, but also upbeat in a childish way.
"Yeah, it does. It's not a bad feeling." replied Ayanokouji.
"Hee hee. Kiyotaka-kun."
"What's up?"
"Huh? What do you mean?"
"You said my name."
"I-I did?! S-sorry, you must've heard wrong! There's also one more thing… Can you meet with me later? There's something I want you to see."
"Okay…"
Ayanokouji didn't understand what Airi wanted to show but he agreed to go as she looked like she needed someone's help. Airi was wringing her hands which was a clear sign of anxiety and distress.
It took about 20 minutes to reach the Keiyaki Mall and upon arriving at the Keyaki Mall, the group immediately went to the movie theater. Haruka had bought the tickets ahead of time, and she handed them out to the entire group.
Ayanokouji glanced at the ticket that Haruka handed to him and saw the time of the movie and movie title. He didn't know what the movie was about or even the name of the movie, but according to Haruka, it was a popular movie amongst the students and Ayanokouji had no idea. The group entered the movie theater and it revealed a massive open room as it bustled with excitement and activity. Ayanokouji could smell the mingling scent of buttery popcorn and sweet candy.
The walls are adorned with large movie posters, each promoting the latest films in vibrant colors and bold fonts as it did its best to draw the attention of the people. The marble floor is polished clean and he could see a plush red carpet leading to the snacks counter, register, and pathways leading to multiple hallways which Ayanokouji assumed will lead to the individual movie theaters. In addition to the movie posters, there was a group of large screens displaying showtimes and location for the various films, giving visitors a quick glance at what's playing and when their showtime is. The lobby has a spacious feel, with comfortable seating areas where visitors can relax or chat before the movie begins. The lights are dimmed which create a cozy and anticipatory atmosphere.
When the group entered, there was a podium where a friendly, uniformed attendant greeted the group and asked them for their tickets. Ayanokouji remembered seeing a line of students outside of the movie theater, ordering tickets. Thanks to Haruka, they skipped the line completely and just made their way inside. The group handed the tickets to the attendant, who scanned each of the tickets, before handing it back to them.
"Alright! You guys are going to be in Theatre #4 and it's going to be towards the right side of the room. Your seat number should be on your ticket. Snacks and drinks are available at the front counter. Please enjoy." said the attendant.
"Thank you!"
The group headed towards the center of the room where there's a long counter that stretches across the room and was manned by numerous attendants in uniforms. Behind the counter, the bright lights of the concession stand shine, there was a wide variety of snacks and treats: popcorn, candy, nachos with cheese, sodas, and other various snacks.
Ayanokouji stared at the various options and didn't know what to get. He glanced over at Airi and it seemed that she was having a hard time deciding what to get. The rest of the Ayanokouji group was already lined up and the duo remained quietly behind them as they stared at the brightly lit menu.
Ayanokouji decided not to get too many snacks as he didn't want to be too full before dinner. He saw that the prices of snacks and drinks are a little higher compared to buying it from a grocery store. He noticed that Airi is too indecisive and stared intently at the menus.
"What are you going to get, Airi?" asked Ayanokouji.
"U-Uh… I don't know. I have to watch some of my weight." said Airi, looking at her figure self-consciously.
"I see… I'm going to get a small popcorn and drink."
"Ahh… I might just do that minus the drink."
"Are you sure? The popcorn is going to be a little salty and make your mouth dry."
"Ahh! Y-You're right about that! Maybe I should get some water instead!"
With that, it seems with the help of Ayanokouji, Airi had come to a decision. And without any difficulties, the group ordered their drinks and snacks before making their way to Theatre #4. However before they could make it, Ayanokouji heard someone calling his name.
"Ayanokouji-kun!" called Satou. Ayanokouji saw Satou and a few girls behind her and it seems that Satou and some of her friends are coming to watch the same movie as the Ayanokouji group. Ayanokouji wondered if it was a coincidence.
"Hello, Satou." said Ayanokouji, greeting her.
"Hey, are you going to see that movie right now? You know, that one everyone's talking about?! To tell you the truth, I came here to see it, too. So did Karuizawa-san and the others."
"I see."
"When I mentioned wanting to see a movie after our study group, Karuizawa-san said that she wanted to come, too. So, we all decided to go. Since we're all here, let's see it together!"
Satou launched forward and quickly latched onto Ayanokouji's arm. Airi squeaked out loud and had a surprised look on her face and Ayanokouji could see hints of jealousy emitting from her face. The rest of the Ayanokouji group was surprised too, but Haruka put her hands on top of her mouth, covering it and glancing at Ayanokouji and Airi simultaneously as if she sensed some hidden connection between them.
"Hey, knock it off." said Ayanokouji, feeling a little embarrassed and out of place by having Satou randomly latch onto his arm.
"Huh? Why? This is okay, isn't it? We go way back, right?" asked Satou. Satou sounded calm and composed, but her face was red.
"Oh, what a coincidence. Yukimura-kun, Ayanokouji-kun. Oh, and Hasebe-san and Sakura-san, too." said Karuizawa in a slightly condescending manner.
Karuizawa stepped away from her group and approached Satou and the Ayanokouji group. Ayanokouji could see Shinohara, Mori, and Maezano with her. He could see that Shinohara and Mori both had a surprised expression on their faces, but it was mixed with anger and jealousy as they glared at Satou and her sudden actions, wishing that they were in Satou's place instead.
"What an unpleasant coincidence. I'm going inside." said Keisei, entering the movie theater by himself and looking indignant.
Akito glanced at the girls for a brief moment before making a quick decision as he hurriedly and silently followed Keisei. Haruka and Airi exchanged looks and it seemed like they were debating whether or not to stay and witness this entire scene, but ultimately decided to stay.
"Well, guess I'll go too." said Ayanokouji, deciding to try to make a run for it.
Ayanokouji somewhat forcefully removed himself from Satou's grip, but before he could follow Keisei and Akito into the safety of the dark movie theater, Shinohara and Mori blocked his escape.
"Kiyopon are you-" said Haruka.
"I'm not dating Satou." said Ayanokouji, cutting straight to the point as he knew what Haruka would say after witnessing what Satou did and said.
Ayanokouji's words seemed to have somewhat calmed down Airi, Shinohara, and Mori, but they were glancing uneasily at Ayanokouji and Satou. They knew that they were partners during the Dormates Mini Special Exam and weren't sure if anything happened between the duo.
"A-Ayanokouji-kun! What's your seat number?!" asked Shinohara, quickly breaking the silence and asking him a question.
"Yeah!" said Mori.
The two girls are both desperately trying to find out where Ayanokouji's seat is and hope that they are sitting close by him.
"Let me see… My seat number is M15." said Ayanokouji, looking at his ticket.
"Damn! You're all the way in the back." muttered Shinohara. Apparently, it seems that they won't be sitting together and Ayanokouji could see that Mori and Shinohara both looked disappointed.
"What are we doing?! Let's go! The movie is gonna to start at any moment!" said Karuizawa.
Karuizawa's interference seemed to have caused everyone to quickly enter the dark movie theater as they didn't have much time to chit chat and need to find their seats.
It was dark and extremely quiet as if they entered an abandoned part of the movie theatre. Ayanokouji could hear hushed whispers, but it was so faint that he could barely hear the conversations. The first thing that Ayanokouji noticed is the large, curved screen at the front of the room which is framed by a dark, plush curtain.
The seats are arranged in rows in a sloped formation where everyone has a clear view of the screen. The seats are cushioned and seemed comfortable with reclining features and a drink holder on the armrests of the chair. The floor is covered in dark carpet and the lighting is subtle with small dim lights on the aisles and under the seats which is enough to guide people through the dark space without interfering with the movie theather's dark atmosphere.
The air smells of salty and buttery popcorn, sweetness of candy and soda, and other various snacks from the concession stands. Ayanokouji said his goodbyes to Karuizawa's group as they headed towards the front of the movie theater while Haruka, Airi, and Ayanokouji headed towards the back seats. As Ayanokouji sat down, Airi leaned over and whispered to him.
"Um, K-Kiyotaka-kun?" asked Airi.
"What's the matter?" asked Ayanokouji.
"Well, Kiyotaka-kun, it's... Recently, you've gotten along pretty well with, um, Satou-san, right?"
Considering what Airi had seen, it wasn't surprising that she was curious and even Ayanokouji's words had little effect on calming her down. However, Ayanokouji needed to keep that particular rumor from spreading since Satou seems a little more aggressive.
"That's not how it is. Satou and I were exam partners." said Ayanokouji.
"B-but...p-people don't normally walk, um, a-arm-in-arm like that, do they?" asked Airi.
"That wasn't really arm-in-arm. She just grabbed me."
"Well, if you dislike it, you could just, um, shake her off."
"I understand. I don't think there will be a next time."
"A-also… When you partnered up with Satou-san, did something happen? I-Is there s-something g-going between you two?"
"No."
Ayanokouji noticed that Airi didn't seem too convinced by his answer.
"Not convinced?" asked Ayanokouji.
"N-no, I am. S-sorry. I've been asking you all these strange questions... Did I make you uncomfortable?" said Airi, looking a bit flustered and embarrassed that she asked those questions.
"Not at all. If there's something bothering you, you can ask me any time."
"I'll keep an eye on you, then, Kiyotaka-kun. L-Leave it to me!"
"Thanks, I guess. I hope it's not too close."
"Hee hee~"
Ayanokouji didn't want to burst Airi's bubble as she looked very confident now compared to before. The duo fell into silence as all of the lights dimmed off and the giant movie screen blared to life. Everyone in the movie theater fell into silence as the movie screen began playing the movie.
Timeskip (2 hours later)*
The end credits began playing and the movie ended. Some people got up immediately and headed for the exit while others remained in their seats, chatting with their friends or eating and drinking. Ayanokouji sat in silence as he processed what he just watched. It was the first time that he watched a movie especially with people that are considered friends. He enjoyed the movie, but found it strange.
Ayanokouji saw Karuizawa's group leaving the theater and could see Shinohara, Satou, and Mori giving him one last look before they disappeared from their dark movie theater. Ayanokouji glanced over at the rest of the Ayanokouji group and could see Haruka, Akito, and Keisei discussing the movie. Airi was glancing over at Ayanokouji and averted her eyes. It seems that something is bothering her, but Airi seemed to be trying her best to hide it. Ayanokouji wondered if that's the reason why she invited out later in the evening.
"Let's go." said Haruka, getting Airi's and Ayanokouji's attention.
Ayanokouji nodded and the group left the dark and nearly empty movie theater. The bright lights from the lobby blinded Ayanokouji for a few brief moments before his eyes got used to the bright lights. Ayanokouji didn't see Karuizawa and her group as it seems like they already left the movie theater. The Ayanokouji group exited the movie theater and stopped at a nearby bench as they discussed their next course of actions.
"Hey! Do you guys wanna get some dinner?" asked Haruka.
"I'm down with it." said Akito.
"I suppose it's more convenient." replied Keisei.
"I-I'm fine with it. What about you, K-Kiyotaka-kun?" asked Airi.
"Sure." replied Ayanokouji.
"Yay! We can talk about the movie while we eat. I always wanted to do something like this!" said Haruka, cheerfully.
"The question is where should we go." said Akito.
"And if we need a reservation." added Keisei.
"Gah! You guys and your planning! Let's go around and decide!." said Haruka.
"Sounds vague and counterproductive." muttered Keisei.
"Don't be like that Yukimuu! And away we go!"
Haruka grabbed Airi by the arm and began taking her away as she headed towards a random direction. Akito exchanged looks with Ayanokouji and Keisei before shrugging his shoulders and following the duo. Keisei glanced at Ayanokouji, who shrugged in response, and Keisei sighed before the duo followed the rest of the Ayanokouji group.
Akito, Keisei, and Ayanokouji stayed closely together as a trio and they seemed to be discussing various topics, but Akito was asking Keisei about their study sessions and the various topics. Haruka, who noticed what they were talking about, froze for a brief moment and Ayanokouji could see that she was shaking slightly before returning back to normal. It would seem that merely talking about studying shakes her up and Ayanokouji wonders how far Haruka will go to avoid studying.
After minutes of walking around the Keiyaki Mall, the group stopped in front of a ramen restaurant. The exterior of the restaurant had a simple wooden sign with a ramen logo hanging above a red curtained doorway and it was written in bold, white calligraphic kanji characters with the name of the restaurant. There are two red lanterns hung outside which are turned on and casted a warm, red glow. The exterior looked quite modest and inviting with a blend of traditional and contemporary designs of a ramen restaurant.
When the group stepped inside, the space was cozy and quite limited. There was a long, wooden counter with a few wooden and old barstools where you had a full view of the kitchen and could watch the chefs prepare ramen. There were a few small wooden tables and booths on the side, but Ayanokouji could see that the restaurant would serve 15 people maximum.
By the counter, there was a large wooden menu nailed on the wall where it was handwritten. Ayanokouji could see that the handwriting was worn down and old which left him wondering how long this restaurant was operating for. There were a few lanterns and hanging lights which lit up the dining space with a bright and vibrant red glow.
The walls of the restaurant are adorned with wood paneling, giving the space a warm and rustic vibe, but Ayanokouji could see that the wood is old and worn out. To fill up the empty space of the restaurant's walls, there are numerous calligraphy works with hand-painted kanji characters on wooden boards or paper scrolls. Some of them had one word or phrases, but it was all ramen-related. There are also vintage posters of Japanese ramen advertisements from several years or decades ago. Ayanokouji could also see framed images of ramen ingredients such as soft-boiled eggs, chashu, and fresh vegetables as if the kitchen is showing the type of ingredients they use. It looked like a typical Japanese ramen restaurant.
The Ayanokouji group sat down at the front count and occupied most of the front counter. The menu was inside the kitchen and towards the back walls as the group stared into the kitchen to read the menu. One of the chefs greeted them as he moved out of the way to allow the group to read the menu properly without blocking their line of vision.
Ayanokouji could smell various boiling broths and sizzling ramen toppings as they went right in front of the kitchen and could see the chefs cook. The richness and umami flavor from the various ramen broths wafted through the air as it was doing its best to tempt Ayanokouji while he's trying to make a decision.
Ayanokouji glanced at the menu as he went through all of his options. He had already tried out various ramen and wanted to try something different. He could go with his usual tonkatsu ramen, but as Ayanokouji was scanning the handwritten menu, something caught his eye. There was a menu item that he hadn't tried and seen before: Hokkaido ramen. Ayanokouji debated silently for several moments before making a decision.
Ayanokouji glanced over at the rest of the Ayanokouji group and could see that Keisei and Airi were both thinking about what to get. Airi looked indecisive and didn't know what to get, similarly to when she was having a hard time buying snacks and drinks for the movie. Keisei looked like he was evaluating and overthinking all of the menu items along with their benefits and potential drawbacks. After a few more minutes, one of the chefs approached them with a notepad and pen.
"Hello, folks! What can I get started for you?" asked the chef. Akito ordered what he wanted and the chef turned to the rest of the group.
"Don't worry, guys. You guys can pay me back later. It'll be more of a hassle if we all got separate checks." said Akito.
"Yeah. That would be a pain in the ass! Thank you for not doing that!" said the chef, laughing out loud. He seemed genuinely happy and relieved by Akito's decision.
"Are you supposed to be admitting that?! Where's the customer service?!" asked Keisei, shocked by the chef's brutal honesty.
"Why not? You don't want to write 5 separate checks and process them, right?"
"I suppose…"
The rest of the Ayanokouji group ordered and Ayanokouji chose the Hokkaido ramen along with a glass of lemonade. He wanted a sweet drink to counteract the saltiness and richness of ramen. Ayanokouji knew that ramen is quite rich and filling, so he decided not to choose any appetizers.
The chef turned his back from the group and started shouting orders to the other 2 chefs who were waiting for orders. There were enthusiastic cries that echoed in the kitchen as everyone began to work.
The dominant scent of the various broths was a blend of meaty and umami flavors as it overwhelmed Ayanokouji's sense of smell as the various broths clashed for dominance. Ayanokouji could smell the spices and some of the ingredients of the broths as there was a common ingredient of vegetables and bones in some of the broth which gave a distinct fragrance. One of the chefs was chopping up some vegetables such as leeks, green onions, scallions, corn, bean sprouts, and other various vegetables. He was also sauteing a pan full of garlic which gave it an overpowering smoky and garlicky fragrance in the kitchen.
Ayanokouji could see the last cook preparing the dry ramen noodles as he placed them inside several stainless steel strainers before dunking them into a vat of boiling water. He pressed a button a few times before turning his attention to a pot of boiling water and adding several eggs into the boiling pot.
Ayanokouji could see the three chefs working individually on different components of the ramen. It seems that they were working in unison and trying to finish all of the ramen at the same time. Ayanokouji could see the various broth, toppings, vegetables, and the standard chashu and soft-boiled egg being prepared in front of him as all of the components of a standard ramen are being prepared at the same time.
The steam from simmering pots and pans wafted through the ceilings and into the various kitchen air vents, but Ayanokouji could feel some of the humidity and warmth from the hardworking kitchen. It felt like Ayanokouji was watching an artwork as the 3 chefs are working in unison and it was clear that they have complete mastery in making ramen.
After watching for a couple of minutes, the chefs lined up empty ramen bowls and began pouring various broths before adding the freshly boiled ramen noodles into the steaming hot bowl of broth. One strainer for one bowl and it was the perfect serving of a bowl of ramen. Ayanokouji watched as the chefs meticulously and carefully added the various toppings, vegetables, pieces of chashu, and a soft-boiled egg into each bowl. One of the chefs grated ginger and sprinkled the green onions and scallions into each bowl, adding the final touches to the ramen. Another was preparing everyone's drinks while the last chef sorted all of the bowls and had them facing their respective owners before the chefs gave it to them.
Ayanokouji could admire the work being done in the kitchen as everything was done with skill and efficiency. There is some sort of rhythm to the kitchen as everything flows to the beat of the simmering broth, boiling noodles, and slicing of toppings with speed and precision. All of the orders were completed and served at the same time.
"Please enjoy!" said the chefs.
"Thank you! Itadakimasu!" said the group.
Ayanokouji is looking down at a bowl of hot, steaming ramen noodles. It took a few moments before the steam dissipated and Ayanokouji's vision was clear. Ayanokouji could see the rich, thick, and creamy golden-brown broth. The broth and ramen noodles are glistening due to some oil in the broth and the noodles. The ramen noodles were the typically medium-thick, slightly curly, and yellow noodles as it is perfectly absorbing the flavorful broth.
The ramen had some of the typical and traditional ramen toppings such as pieces of chashu, green onions, and bamboo shoots, and soft-boiled egg. However, Ayanokouji noticed that there was some unique ingredients that seemed to be uniquely for Hokkaido ramen as Ayanokouji hadn't seen it in any bowl of ramen he ate such as corn and a small pat of butter added on top which is slowly melting into the broth.
Ayanokouji gathered some of the ramen noodles and slurped it up. He could taste the richness and savoriness of the noodles as it absorbed all of that umami, salty, and slightly sweet flavor from the broth. The saltiness and umami flavor came from the miso based broth as it still has the powerful rich and umami flavor as any other ramen. The corn had provided a slight sweetness in the rich and salty broth and the bright yellow color of the corn complemented with the lightly colored ramen broth. The butter was completely melted into the broth and added to the richness of the broth and gave it a creamy texture of the broth.
Ayanokouji decided to try the individual toppings next. The chashu was succulent, tender and melted in Ayanokouji's mouth as he chewed on the piece of meat. It provided a powerful rich flavor in addition to the rich broth. There was also a slight hint of sweetness and smokiness as the edges of chashu were caramelized. The bamboo shoots provided a soft, but crunchy texture for the ramen along with an earthy flavor.
The lemonade that Ayanokouji ordered provided a citrusy and sugary flavor that contrasts the extreme saltiness and richness from the ramen. It prevented flavor fatigue and brought relief to Ayanokouji's sense of taste.
As the Ayanokouji group was eating their meal, the group was discussing the movie. They were talking about the plot of the movie and the various different characters and their interactions with each other. Haruka was the most vocal and talkative, especially when it comes to topics of romance. Keisei was the opposite and less talkative, but he was more interested in the plot and everything fits and revolves around it along with following basic laws of logic and science. It was an interesting experience for Ayanokouji. From Ayanokouji's perspective, this seems like something people will do after watching a movie together.
After the group finished their meal, the conversation about the movie was dying off as they pretty much discussed everything they wanted aout the movie. Akito paid for everyone's meal and the group headed towards the exit of the restaurant. Ayanokouji could see that the dining space was filling up and was not surprised as ramen was quite cheap and filling.
"Thank you! Please come back!" said one of the chefs, noticing that the group was leaving.
The Ayanokouji group exited the comfortable, small ramen restaurant and into the brightly lit Keiyaki Mall. Ayanokouji could see that the sun was completely set and he could see the dark, evening sky from the skylight above. Ayanokouji checked his phone and realized that it is almost time for his private meeting with Airi. Ayanokouji and Airi exchanged looks and he saw Airi nodding her head before turning towards the rest of the Ayanokouji group.
"U-Uh… H-Haruka-chan, I have to leave now. I have something to do." said Airi.
"Oh? That's fine." said Haruka, raising her eyebrows in surprise. Before anyone could say anything else, Ayanokouji spoke up.
"I also have to leave as well." said Ayanokouji. Haruka raised her eyebrows in surprise as she began suspecting that this was no coincidence as both Ayanokouji and Airi are leaving at the same time.
"I'll see you guys tomorrow." said Ayanokouji, turning his attention to Keisei and Akito, who said goodbyes to Ayanokouji and Airi.
"Good night." said Airi.
The duo began leaving together from the rest of the Ayanokouji group and Ayanokouji could hear Haruka calling out to them.
"Airi! I didn't know that you were that bold to ask Kiyopon like that!" called out Haruka, in a teasing tone.
Ayanokouji could see a mischievous and playful glint in Haruka's eyes before they began leaving and had the feeling that she was going to tease Airi. Airi, who is not used to someone's teasing, widened her eyes and her face grew red. Airi's posture stiffened at Haruka's jab and she stopped walking, freezing in place.
"N-No! H-Haruka-chan, it's not like that! Gah!" protested Airi, turning around. Airi wanted to say something else, but out of anxiety and panic, she accidently bit her tongue and wasn't able to get the words out of her mouth. This caused her face to grow more red which didn't go unnoticed by the observant Haruka.
"Oh really?~ It looks like that, right Miyacchi?" asked Haruka. Her teasing and playful tone was still the same as she turned towards Akito for support. At this rate, Airi seemed frozen and caused Ayanokouji to stop and turn around.
"Leave her alone, Haruka. I'm sure it's a coincidence." said Keisei. Keisei didn't look convinced, but Akito gave them a curious glance and could see how flustered and paralyzed Airi was, making her unable to move.
"Yeah. It's nothing, Haruka." said Akito, deciding to agree with Keisei.
"Ahhh! You guys are too nice. And Yukimuu, you're too dense!" said Haruka.
"What do you mean?! You guys should go. Don't let Haruka slow you down." said Keisei, turning his attention back to Ayanokouji and Airi. Ayanokouji decided to take charge otherwise Airi will probably be too paralyzed to move.
"Let's go, Airi." said Ayanokouji, grabbing Airi by the arm and gently dragging her for a few steps.
This seemed to have worked as Airi regained her mobility and the duo left together. Before Ayanokouji could get too far from the rest of the Ayanokouji group, he gave a quick glance behind and could see that Haruka had an amused and playful smile on her face as if she had an idea in her head. Ayanokouji had the feeling that Haruka probably got the wrong idea about the duo. Akito looked curious and it seemed what Haruka said intrigued him, but he gave Ayanokouji a shrug. Keisei just stared at them blankly and disinterested as if he didn't understand why Haruka was teasing Airi like that and what she was insinuating. Eventually, the view of the Ayanokouji group faded away into the background of the Keiyaki Mall before Ayanokouji turned towards Airi.
"Where are we going?" asked Ayanokouji.
"Just somewhere private…" muttered Airi.
Airi seemed really distracted and absentminded, but it was clear that something was bothering Airi for a long time. She wouldn't have something vague and could have suspicious meaning without being panicked or flustered. Ayanokouji wondered how long it was bothering Airi. Suddenly, Airi froze and her face turned slightly pink as if she realized the meaning of what she said.
"A-Ahh! Sorry! I-I didn't mean like tha, Kiyotaka-kun. I just need someone to help give me courage." said Airi.
"I see… Lead the way." said Ayanokouji.
Ayanokouji had the feeling that Airi wasn't going to tell him yet and decided not to push her further. The duo continued walking and exited the Keiyaki Mall, but Ayanokouji noticed that Airi's footsteps were growing quiet and every step seemed to be slowing down and becoming smaller. Ayanokouji decided to wait and let Airi speak up since it looked like she was about to and he didn't want to interrupt her. It seemed that all of her troubles looked like she's about to burst and spill out her troubles and worries to Ayanokouji.
"K-Kiyotaka-kun! Has no one ever confessed their feelings to you before?" asked Airi.
"No." replied Ayanokouji.
Ayanokouji decided not to mention Ichihashi since it wasn't necessary and he didn't want to bring up the private matters between himself and Ichihashi. The last thing Ayanokouji wanted was to tell one of his soulmates that another soulmate had confessed their love to him.
"I-I see. S-Sorry! I-I didn't mean to ask something so personal!" said Airi, looking apologetic.
"It's all right. Did someone confess to you?" asked Ayanokouji, countering another question.
Ayanokouji had the feeling of who it was since he had multiple conversations with that particular individual and their feelings for Airi.
"Y-Yeah! It's-" said Airi.
"Yamauchi?" asked Ayanokouji, interrupting her as he wanted to confirm his suspicions.
"Y-Yeah…"
"Interesting. And you want me to come with you?"
Airi nodded her head and Ayanokouji hoped that she wasn't going to be like Ichinose and asked him to pretend to be her boyfriend. But Ayanokouji knew that Airi wasn't the type of girl to ask him to do that and probably wanted Ayanokouji to witness it as a witness and to give her courage.
"T-This is the first time someone confessed to me. I-I don't know anything about Yamauchi-kun. That's a bit scary." said Airi.
"I see." replied Ayanokouji.
"I just realized that liking someone, or hating someone, actually comes with a ton of responsibility."
'I supposed that to Sakura, who had distanced herself from those around her until now, that must have come as a shock. In this case, though, my ability to help was rather limited. Sakura would have to make this decision. Yamauchi would live with the consequences. Even someone like me, a complete novice when it came to romance, understood that. I couldn't advise Sakura on whether to reject or accept Yamauchi. I could only listen quietly to what she had to say.' thought Ayanokouji.
"Yamauchi-kun hasn't done anything wrong, but this... I think I just don't want this. Still, I do feel sorry for him, since he likes someone like me..." said Airi.
"Love was a rather complicated matter." said Ayanokouji.
"I've been thinking about it for a while now, but I just don't know what to do. Why me? That's what I'm wondering. Why do I have to suffer like this? Ayanokouji-kun, this... Well, this might be something you don't need to hear, but..."
"Ask me anything. If I can answer, I will."
"I...I wonder what I should do… I-I don't know."
"Just answer based on how you feel. You can accept Yamauchi, or reject him, or you can start by being friends. It's your decision and you don't have to be pressured to choose. Of course, you can always hold off on answering, too. And if it's too embarrassing, I can tell Yamauchi for you."
Ayanokouji's advice seemed to have made Airi pause as the silence between the duo grew. He could see that Airi was genuinely thinking about his advice.
"No, I'll do it myself. I think I probably have to." said Airi.
"I see. I suppose you should, for Yamauchi's sake." replied Ayanokouji.
"Yes. I know. I'm going to turn him down."
"I see."
"It's just... Well, I don't think I'm qualified to reject someone. I think it might be presumptuous of me, but...but..."
Sakura looked overwhelmed by guilt by her decision and it was similar to the feelings and troubles that she had when she was debating to be Sudou's witness during his trial a few months ago.
"You have nothing to apologize for. When you get down to it, this crush is one-sided. There's nothing strange about turning someone down if you don't feel the same way. In this situation, there's no such thing as being unqualified." said Ayanokouji, speaking firmly. Ayanokouji found it ironic since this basically describes the romantic relationship between himself and his soulmates.
As the duo were talking, they eventually entered a quiet, empty, but well-lit plaza that was off the main path. Ayanokouji glanced around and could see a couple of vending machines, benches, and wooden tables. It seemed like a rest area, but he didn't see Yamauchi anywhere.
"It's best if I remain out of sight." said Ayanokouji.
"N-no! If you're not here, Ayanokouji-kun, I won't be able to say anything. So, please..." said Airi, suddenly grabbing his uniform's sleeve tightly. Ayanokouji turned towards Airi and could see the fear, anxiety, and desperation on her face.
"Please don't leave me alone." pleaded Airi.
"If that's your preference." replied Ayanokouji.
The duo waited in silence, but Ayanokouji could tell it was a tense moment for Airi as the duo didn't even talk as Airi stared off towards the main path, expecting Yamauchi to show up. Ayanokouji decided not to speak up and let the moment build up as the intensity built up as time went on. About a few minutes later, Yamauchi arrived and Ayanokouji could see that Yamauchi's expression was much stiffer than Ayanokouji had ever seen.
"Wh-why are you here, Ayanokouji?" asked Yamauchi, genuinely surprised and he could see hints of suspicion as his eyes flickered to Airi and Ayanokouji.
"Sorry. Airi said she didn't have the courage to talk to you alone, so she asked me to stay. Don't mind me." replied Ayanokouji.
"A-Airi?!"
Ayanokouji could see that Yamauchi didn't feel comfortable having him there. However, he had no choice except to deal with it. He looked suspicious and surprised that Ayanokouji called Airi by her first name, but then he focused his attention on Airi.
"S-sorry to have kept you waiting. So, did you read my letter?" asked Yamauchi.
"Yes. Um. Please, let me ask you one thing." replied Airi.
"Sure, anything."
"Wh-why do you like...me? Plenty of people are cuter than me."
Airi grabbed her skirt and spoke as though she was squeezing her voice out of her throat. Her voice was strained and Ayanokouji could tell that she's summoning all of her courage. It was an improvement compared to reserved and shy nature as she's actively trying to talk to a classmate and especially during a tense and anxiety-filled moment like a romantic confession.
"I like you , Sakura!" shouted Yamauchi. This caused Airi to flinch in response as she took a few small steps away from him as she was shocked by his sudden shift in his tone.
"S-sorry. I didn't mean to shout. S-so, what's your answer?" said Yamauchi, noticing his mistake and Airi's actions.
As a witness, Ayanokouji could see a number of potential ways to handle the situation. But he could tell that Yamauchi was incredibly nervous and looked like his heart was about to leap out of his chest and it may explain why he said what he did. The silence between the trio grew as Yamauchi threw down his ultimatum. Yamauchi stared at the ground and bowed his head in silence, tensing for Airi's response. The silence lasted for a few moments before Airi gave her answer that broke the silence.
"I...I'm sorry!" sputtered Airi, bowing deeply and her eyes slightly red. It was an awkward answer for an awkward confession. Ayanokouji could see that Yamauchi's last spark of hope crumbled to dust and blew away.
"I, it's just, w-well, I can't, um, return your feeling." added Airi. Ayanokouji could tell that it must have taken her a lot of courage to unleash those words.
"I see." replied Yamauchi.
It sounded as though Yamauchi was desperately trying to digest what had happened. His voice shook, just like Airi's. Ayanokouji watched in silence and didn't dare to interfere or say anything since this was supposed to be a private moment between Airi and Yamauchi. Ayanokouji shouldn't even be there in the first place.
"Thank you, Sakura. For coming all the way here, um, to tell me in person." said Yamauchi.
"G-goodbye!" said Airi. She looked like she was no longer able to bear the situation, bowed and ran away. The two boys watched her retreating figure as she disappeared into the darkness.
"Ah," sighed Yamauchi.
Yamauchi extended his arm weakly, as if to try to catch Airi as she left. Ayanokouji couldn't do anything but stand there quietly as it was the first romance he ever saw in person break down. Yamauchi endured the frustration in silence for a few minutes, but eventually, he lifted his head and looked at Ayanokouji. He wondered if Yamauchi was going to take his anger out on him.
"M-man, talk about embarrassing. Getting rejected by a girl in front of your classmate. I feel like my face is on fire." said Yamauchi, sighing as it seemed like he's not blaming Ayanokouji. Ayanokouji still saw the shock of rejection on his face.
"Whew. It's like... How do I even put it? I almost feel relieved, you know?" said Yamauchi, sounding nearly cheerful now.
"Like, I was a real idiot. I was just causing Sakura trouble. She tried so carefully not to hurt me, a guy she didn't like. I feel incredibly guilty. I mean, I'm free to like her and all, but I've learned that conveying your feelings to someone comes with responsibility." said Yamauchi.
"You're not as upset as I thought you'd be." replied Ayanokouji.
"Well, it's a shock, but it's not all that bad. Sakura's cute, and I wanted her to be my girlfriend. But I was just looking at her face and her body, you know? That's a cheap thing to do. I think, like, I didn't really love her. If I really liked her, I would've felt worse when she rejected me… That's why I'm moving on. I'll find a girl that I really like."
Ayanokouji nodded and didn't dare to say anything else, but Yamauchi turned towards Ayanokouji with a curious, but suspicious look.
"By the way, did you call Sakura by her first name? Ayanokouji, you bastard! Don't tell me that-" said Yamauchi.
"I'm not dating, Airi." replied Ayanokouji, interrupting him.
"Then why?"
"Our study group agreed to call each other by our first name."
Ayanokouji used the Ayanokouji group as the main reason as it was the truth and he wanted Yamauchi to think that it was only between himself and Airi. By adding the rest of the Ayanokouji group, it would make it easier for Yamauchi to accept it.
"Oh! That explains why you're with them a lot now!" said Yamauchi.
'Maybe Yamauchi is finally becoming more mature.' thought Ayanokouji.
"That's why I'm shooting for Kushida-chan next!" said Yamauchi, shouting his declaration. Ayanokouji wondered if the reason why he made such a loud and public declaration was because there was no one here and that's why he got the courage.
'Maybe he didn't change at all…' thought Ayanokouji.
"Keep up the fight." said Ayanokouji, replying simply.
"All right! You better not get in my way, Ayanokouji!" said Yamauchi, pumping his fists in the air.
"I have no intention."
'After all, it's Kushida that's going to come to me. Not the other way around.' thought Ayanokouji.
Timeskip (10 minutes later)*
Ayanokouji froze as he noticed a commotion going on. It was from a duo that he would least expect and he wondered what they were doing together especially during the evening with no witnesses.
Ayanokouji decided to take a detour and strayed from the main path and got closer to the unexpecting duo. He took cover behind some trees, but he was at a distance where he could hear their conversation.
"Tch… why did I have to run into you?" grumbled Karuizawa.
"I could say the same. Why don't you fuck off and go back crying to Hirata-kun? That's the only thing you're good for." grumbled Manabe.
"Stupid bitch…"
"By the way, how's Hirata-kun doing? I heard that he's on the market now since your bitching caused him to break up with you."
"W-What the fuck?! Are you the one that's spreading rumors?! I-I'm still dating Hirata-kun!"
"Doesn't look like it to me. Looks like he wanted to avoid you."
"An ugly and desperate girl like you won't get it. How to get a guy like Hirata-kun."
"I don't need to date Hirata-kun to know that you're a scared bitch that uses guys to hide the fact that you were bullied in junior high. How desperate a bitch be!"
"Y-You-"
Ayanokouji watched as Karuizawa and Manabe traded insults and degrading comments back at each other. He would assume that the two girls ran into each other and it led to this. Ayanokouji watched Karuizawa's body language and could see that she was anxious and uneasy, but she's doing her best to put up the usual persona that she had during school.
"Tch… I don't have time to talk to a loser like you." grumbled Karuizawa, as she pushed past Manabe roughly.
Karuizawa bumped Manabe by her shoulder and stormed away and caused Manabe to stumble backwards slightly. Ayanokouji was surprised that Manabe didn't resort to violence and counter Karuizawa's aggressive actions.
"Says the loser that hides like a pussy." said Manabe. Karuizawa's posture stiffened for a brief moment, but she ignored Manabe's taunt and left. Ayanokouji could see that Manabe was showing her middle finger to Karuizawa, but Karuziawa didn't even turn around and continued walking away.
The silence grew as Karuizawa's footsteps faded away as she disappeared into the evening. Ayanokouji watched in silence as he saw Manabe sitting down at a nearby bench and sighing loudly. The sigh was one of annoyance and frustration. Ayanokouji wondered what he should do and decided to talk with Manabe.
"Hello, Manabe." said Ayanokouji.
"A-Ayanokouji! What are you doing here?! Were you spying on me?!" demanded Manabe, surprised by Ayanokouji's sudden appearance. Her face was one of surprise and annoyance as she didn't expect him to be there and eavesdropped on her conversation with Karuizawa.
"I suppose you can say that. I just happened to be in the area."
"Bullshit! You son of a bitch!"
Karuizawa POV:
'Why?! Why is this happening to me?! Why?! I thought this school would be a fresh start for me. It was supposed to be my great escape from my horrible past. Something that I want to forget that ever happened to me. Even though I hated it, I remembered. For a moment, my mind went completely blank. All I saw was endless white. And then immediately after, there was darkness.' thought Karuizawa.
The panic and anxiety built up within Karuizawa's mind as the memories of her junior high surfaced up from her subconscious. She had tried to bury it deeper into her mind, but running to Manabe fueled her fear of her past being revealed to school. Her worst fear was having to experience it again when her past is revealed which fuelled her trauma.
Flashback (2 years ago)*
'Despite myself, I remembered. I remembered junior high and the hell I'd created for myself over the most trivial of things. I was stubborn, headstrong, and right after starting school, I made enemies of the other girls for no reason. What followed was a complete nightmare.' thought Karuizawa.
"Hey, Karuizawa! Why don't you buy us some drinks from the vending machine?" shouted a girl. Karuizawa froze in fear and she slowly turned towards a trio of girls as this was a daily occurrence.
The girl that spoke was Fukuhara Kazumi and Karuizawa feared her the most as she was the main antagonist and bully. Fukuhara had long, wavy blonde hair. Her standard school uniform and skirt was modified like a standard gyaru with a shortened skirt above the knee, various bracelets and brightly-colored scrunchies on each arm, her school-issued blouse was baggier, the collar was loosened up, and the top button was unbuttoned. Fukuhara wore dark stockings to match her modified school uniform. In addition, Fukuhara had bold and heavy makeup that included dark eyeliner, bright eyeshadow, fake eyelashes, and perfectly pedicured and brightly painted white nail polishes with her long and pointy fingernails. Fukuhara was considered one of the beautiful girls in the school and she was quite popular amongst the boys and girls.
Due to Fukuhara's immense popularity and her intimidating looks, Karuizawa was fearful and was way out of her league. Some of her classmates could consider her as cute, but if you compared her to Fukuhara, there is no competition as Karuizawa would look like a cheap knockoff of Fukuhara.
Karuizawa slowly got up from her desk and approached Fukuhara and the two girls. Their names are Shiroma Hiromi and Imai Ren, who were Karuizawa's other tormentors. Fukuhara was the main bully and Shiroma and Imai joined in with her as they also did their best to make Karuizawa's school life as miserable as possible.
Shiroma had light brown hair in loose curls, done in beachy waves. Imai had dirty-blonde hair with pink highlights with a high, voluminous ponytail that is somewhat curled. The two girls had their school uniforms altered similarly to Fukuhara. They also wore heavy makeup like Fukuhara. Karuizawa is basically facing 3 gyarus.
"Gimme a cola."
"Red tea!"
"White peach Calpis."
After receiving Karuizawa meekly nodded her head and left for the classroom. It was a daily occurrence and Karuizawa was expected to pay for all of the drinks herself. The first time they asked her to buy her drinks, Karuizawa did and was expecting them to pay her back. That was a mistake as when she did.
Karuizawa still remembered the pain and humiliation that she had to endure. She wasn't expecting Fukuhara to strike back by simply asking her to pack her back. When Karuizawa asked Fukuhara for the money, Fukuhara, Imai, and Shiroma dragged her out of the classroom and into an isolated classroom, away from prying eyes.
"You stupid bitch! Why would you ask something like that?!" said Fukuhara, slapping Karuizawa in the face.
"As if we'll pay a loser like you!" said Imai, laughing.
Karuizawa was stunned by Fukuhara's slap and her face stung in pain. Karuizawa reached over and placed her hand on her face as the stinging pain intensified and she knew that there was going to be a red mark on her face.
"B-But-" said Karuizawa.
But before Karuizawa could finish her sentence, Fukuhara interrupted her and slapped her again in the face. Karuizawa flinched as she could feel the stinging pain and her face was burning up as it felt like her face was swelling up. Her body shook violently as Karuizawa's mind was running wild as she was trying her best to look tough and trying to decide what to do next.
Karuizawa's fear is building up since after her first encounter with Fukuhara, Imai, and Shiroma, her fear built up. She was still trying to resist against her captors and believed that it would be over soon as the 3 girls would be bored of bullying her and move onto the next target. All Karuizawa needed to do was to endure all of it and the humiliation before her nightmare was over. However, Karuizawa was wrong and the worst is yet to come.
Karuizawa shook those thoughts and silently cursed at herself for reminiscing about the past. The vending machine made a loud thudding noise as 3 separate drinks were dispensed out. Karuizawa took the drinks and slowly headed back towards the classroom and before she could enter the classroom, she looked at the wall and saw the wall clock. The second hand of the clock seemed to be running slowly as Karuizawa always looked forward to class time rather than lunch and free period as it was her only protection. Protection against her tormentors.
'Despite everything I did, everything got worse. First, I thought they would get bored of me. They didn't. They didn't even get bored at all and seemed to be enjoying it too much. And lastly, I thought things wouldn't get worse and I… was wrong. After they got bored of doing the same things, Fukuhara and her goons invented new ways to torment me.' thought Karuizawa.
Karuizawa remembered the day that everything changed for the worse for her. She was used to seeing hateful graffiti on her textbooks and the 3 girls throwing her notebooks away, but things changed when she was in the bathroom. Karuizawa was minding her business in her own private space and was about to leave the bathroom stall, but she heard noises coming from both stalls on either side of her. Before Karuizawa could say or do anything, she felt a cold, icy, sharp, and almost painful shock, followed by a rapid cooling sensation. Karuizawa was hit by a wave of cold, ice water and when she looked up, she could see Fukuhara and Shiroma with an empty bucket that was still dripping some water down on her.
"W-What are you doing?!" asked Karuizawa.
Karuizawa gasped out loud and her body was slightly shaking and was in shock due to all of that cold water hitting her body and soaking her uniform. It temporarily caught her off guard and made it difficult to breathe for a few moments before her body slowly adapted to it. But due to the amount of cold water, Karuizawa's body is shaking because of the low temperature.
"Oh? Sorry about that, Karuizawa-san! We didn't mean to do it." said Shiroma, feigning innocence as she sent a wicked smile to Fukuhara, who laughed. Karuizawa could hear Imai laughing from outside of her stall.
"I think you need a little bath, Karuizawa-san. Seriously, an ugly girl like you that also doesn't shower. No wonder that's why I find you so repulsive." said Fukuhara, sneering at her.
Fukuhara is looking down at Karuizawa, physically and as a person. Karuizawa shunked down and made herself as small as possible as she heard all 3 girls laughing out loud. Their harsh and cruel laughter echoed through the empty bathroom as it began Karuizawa's personal torture chamber. The cold, freezing water soaked all the way through Karuizawa's school uniform as it penetrated through her undergarments and onto her skin. The water covered the entirety of Karuizawa's stall floor and formed a big puddle as the water began spreading to the other stalls.
"Ew! The water is everywhere!"
"Let's get outta of here!"
"It's a good thing we gave Karuizawa-san a bath during her lunch time!"
The laughter echoed throughout the bathroom and it slowly faded away as the girls left the bathroom and the door closed, cutting off their laughter from Karuizawa's ears. Karuizawa clenched her fist out of frustration and anger as she felt helpless and hopeless in this situation, but those strong, aggressive emotions faded away and were replaced by sadness, depression, and pain. In response to these emotions, Karuizawa's eyes began to water up slightly and she tried to suppress it, but it did the opposite which caused Karuizawa to begin to cry hysterically in her hopeless situation. It was the beginning of the end for Karuizawa.
'They dumped water on me while I used the bathroom. More than once. It even became a routine. They punched and kicked me. They recorded me getting beaten up and circulated the videos. They put thumbtacks in my shoes and dead animals inside of my desk. I remembered all of it. They pulled my skirt down in front of our classmates. They hid my underwear and uniform after swimming class. They made me confess romantic feelings to boys I didn't actually like. They made me lick their shoes. They even made me pick garbage off the ground and eat it. I remembered experiencing one humiliation after another. Yes, that was right. I remembered.' thought Karuizawa.
'The girls were scared of Fukuhara and nobody wanted to go against her otherwise they would face her wrath and experience what I was going for. And the school… Don't make me laugh! The school already had a bad reputation and they didn't want to make it worse as a similar incident happened a few years before I attended. The teachers claimed that they wanted to help their students and all they needed was for students to ask them for it. That was some bullshit. The entire school had abandoned me. The only good thing it ever did for me was tell me about this school. They threw me a lifeline by letting me go someplace where no one knew me.' thought Karuizawa.
Karuizawa's fist clenched as memories of her past and her past trauma surfaced through her subconscious as she did her best to repress it. However, the fear and trauma that she gained throughout her years of junior high still stuck with her and she sometimes can't help herself, but to think about it.
'In times like these, the defense people have is to just accept whatever happens. After a while, I learned to do that. To accept reality. It would be easier if I just accepted it. Why do I have to suffer like this? No. I didn't want this. Nobody gave me a chance or a way to escape it. Then… Why are people knowing about my past?! Don't tell me Hirata-kun is telling people about it! That's gotta be it… How did Manabe-san know about it then?! Was I really going back to those days? If that happened, I knew my heart couldn't take it. I couldn't endure it if the girls who were now kind to me, who were my friends, started to change. That feeling began to grow within me. I didn't want to go back. Never again. I will do anything to protect my past and to stop it from happening again!' thought Karuizawa.
Karuizawa tried her best to steel her nerves and emotions as she pushed the anxiety and memories of her past deeper into her mind. She did not want to keep thinking about it as she feared that she might not have complete control of her emotions and didn't want anyone to see her like that. Karuizawa also didn't want to return back to her room immediately as she didn't want to be alone in her room with those emotions. She had already shed enough tears in the past and had no intention of doing it again. Karuizawa saw a nearby vending machine and a small sense of relief as she decided to head towards there inside of the first year dorms. Luckily, the nearby area was empty and Karuizawa wanted some alone time and the fresh, autumn air provided a nice sense of clarity for her.
"Perfect! A drink should calm me down." said Karuizawa.
Ayanokouji POV:
"Tch… so you've heard all of this?" demanded Manabe.
"Pretty much. It wasn't my intention. I already told you happen to be in the area." replied Ayanokouji.
Ayanokouji made his only feasible defense as it was the logical explanation to explain why he was here. Manabe clicked her tongue in annoyance. The silence grew between the duo as they sat together on the same bench. Ayanokouji studied Manabe for a few brief moments before speaking up.
From what Ayanokouji could see, Manabe seemed to be deep in thought as she was absentmindedly playing and twirling her fingers around. Her face also seemed to be stoic and her eyebrows furrowed up.
"Manabe, you seemed to be thinking about something. If you don't mind me asking, what are you thinking?" asked Ayanokouji.
"I-It's none of your business!" snapped Manabe, with a sour look on her face as Ayanokouji's question snapped her out of her thoughts.
"You're right, but it's clearly bothering you. It's best for you to talk about it with someone. It could be someone else instead of me."
"Tch… You're really a busybody, do you know that Ayanokouji?"
"So, I've been told. Remember our promise on the cruise ship. I'll be there if you want to talk to me."
"Y-Yeah."
Manabe's face turned slightly red as she remembered what she asked from Ayanokouji and she was trying her best to forget about it since the execution was terrible as Manabe saw it as a moment of weakness. However, Manabe felt happy that Ayanokouji remembered and was comfortable talking about it and her problems with Ayanokouji. There was a brief moment of silence as Manabe sighed loudly before turning towards Ayanokouji.
"Seeing Karuizawa like that reminded me of myself in the past. And I don't like that fact. " said Manabe.
"You have the past, hmm?" asked Ayanokouji, titling his head in curiosity.
"Yeah. Being scared shitless, but putting up a tough act and acting like nothing bothers you anymore. Having nobody and being alone. Just doing ya best to survive this shitty world."
"I see and you see yourself like Karuizawa."
"Hell no! Well… just a little bit, but that bitch is totally different from me."
"And how?"
"I guess that you don't know about it. I guess I should tell you."
Manabe took a deep breath before she launched into her past as she went over her father leaving the entire family, her mother's descent into alcoholism, how she met Taniguchi and her gang, and how alcohol destroyed her entire family. It took about 10 minutes for Manabe to tell her, but Ayanokouji could tell that there's more to the story.
'Interesting. Manabe is somewhat like Karuizawa. Both of them are headstrong and tried their best to put on an act to look tough. However, Manabe had people to look over and protect, somewhat like a new family to compensate for her failing domestic relations, while Karuizawa had no one. That caused them to be different as Manabe protected the people that she deemed as friends and close to while Karuizawa had no one and forged friendship and relationships for her own benefit to protect herself.' thought Ayanokouji.
"I see… That's why you were so protective of Morofuji and the others." said Ayanokouji.
"Hmph! You don't have to say it like that, but yeah. You're spot on." said Manabe.
"There's more to it. I doubt that you were that protective by simply joining Taniguchi's gang."
"When have you become a psychic? Yeah… there's more to it. I became one of Taniguchi's top dogs. You know, keeping an eye on everyone and making sure that they don't get into too much trouble."
Manabe sighed out loud and Ayanokouji had the feeling that she was going to continue the rest of the story.
"Well… let's continue." said Manabe.
"Oi, Manabe! Gimme a cola!" said Taniguchi.
"Fuck you! Do it yourself! I ain't your bitch!" snapped Manabe.
Taniguchi chuckled at Manabe's response and even cracked a wry smile in response. Some of the nearby girls stifled their laughter and tried their best to not laugh out loud. They were used to Taniguchi's antics with Manabe. Some of the newcomers, who were not used to Manabe's harsh and aggressive tone, flinched and averted their eyes from this scene.
"You shouldn't mess with Manabe like that." chided Yamazaki, chuckling as well as she watched too. She was sitting next to Taniguchi and was eating a bag of potato chips as if she's watching an entertaining comedy that is unfolding in front of her.
"I just can't resist messing with Manabe like that." said Taniguchi, grabbing Manabe and pulling her closer to her.
Taniguchi began moving her hand lightly in a back and forth motion through Manabe's hair. This caused Manabe's hair to look slightly disheveled and tousled. Manabe tried to slap Taniguchi's hand away and tried to move away from her, but Taniguchi blocked Manabe's slaps and hugged her using her arms, preventing her from moving. She continued to ruffle Manabe's hair as Manabe cursed at Taniguchi and struggled into her grasp.
"Stop it! Fuck off!" protested Manabe.
"Teehee!~ You're fun to fuck around with, Manabe." said Taniguchi.
Eventually, Taniguchi let Manabe go, but Manabe's short hair was all disheveled and a complete mess. Manabe launched a series of curses at Taniguchi and was slowly trying to fix her hair with her hands. Manabe looked around and glared at some of the nearby girls who stifled their laughter and made their poker face as they averted their eyes.
"We've been running into troubles with the Ikeda gang." said Yamazaki.
"I see. Ikeda is getting more bold and rough, huh?" muttered Taniguchi.
"What are you saying, Taniguchi? We gotta go strike back and stop them from getting into our territory! And besides you know how bad Ikeda could be!" said Manabe, slamming her fist into her other hand.
Ikeda Miho was one of the girls that was beating Ohashi and Manabe when Manabe tried to save Ohashi which eventually led her to join Taniguchi's gang. Ikeda was the leader of that gang of girls and there was a fierce rivalry between both gangs as it seemed like there was some sort of history between Taniguchi and Ikeda which led to both gangs to clash with each other.
"That's Taniguchi-senpai to you. You cheeky brat!" said Taniguchi, grabbing Manabe by the cheeks and stretching them.
"I'm only 2 years younger than you! And why are you doing this?! You never give a flying shit about honorifics!"
"It's Yamazaki-senpai to you too." said Yamauchi, joining it in a teasing manner.
Manabe was confused by Taniguchi's carefreeness as in the past, she was more willing to fight Ikeda and her gang directly. However, she seemed a little reserved and less willing to fight. Taniguchi was the main leader of their gang and most of the girls in her gang were girls that had domestic issues or poor relationships with their parents like Manabe. Others didn't share their burdens and personal life which was fine since Manabe didn't want to be an armchair psychologist for anyone and already had her own share of troubles that she had to deal with. The thing that everyone in Taniuchi's gang had in common is that they had no one considered family.
After spending about a year with Tachiguchi and her gang, Manabe was starting to feel like she had a family or some kind of close relationship with people. Manabe never had any siblings, especially a sister, but joining Taniguchi's gang gave Manabe a strong bond of support and understanding between the various members of the gang. It was a deep sense of connection and loyalty as it provided a feeling of belonging, a safe space where one can feel wanted and escape their problems. If Manabe had a perfectly normal and functional family, her relationship with her parents would've been just like the relationship in Taniguchi's gang and filled with love. Unfortunately, that was far from the truth.
Taniguchi was the leader and the one that created the gang. Yamazaki was seen as Taniguchi's right-hand woman and was there since the beginning and it was apparent that those two knew each other before Taniguchi formed the gang. Tangiuchi and Yamazaki were the oldest out of everyone as they are the same age and attend the same high school together. Manabe did not know Taniguchi's and Yamazaki's past, but it seemed that Taniguchi and Yamazaki were familiar with each other and each other's past. Manabe wondered if they were friends before forming the gang and she remembered what Taniguchi said about her parents, wondering if it's true.
Yamazaki liked to tease people and had grown fond of Manabe, teasing her whenever she could. However despite her playful personality, Yamazaki was seen as the brains in the gang and could be as calm and collected if needed. If Yamazaki was the brain, Taniguchi was the main muscle of the gang as she was the strongest out of everyone.
Even though Manabe joined about a year ago, she gradually rose the rank in the gang and was seen with Taniguchi or Yamazaki. Most of the younger girls saw her as an older sister while the veterans considered her as someone that had a potential leader as she proved to everyone that she was fierce and willing to protect them. Manabe was just as aggressive as Taniguchi and harbored a grudge against Ikeda after their first encounter.
"Whatever! Taniguchi, what are you gonna do with Ikeda?! That bitch was running rampant and Ohashi almost got jumped again!" said Manabe.
"Don't worry, Manabe. I'll deal with it when it's time. Ikeda thinks that she could mess with my sisters and get away with it. She doesn't know what's coming then." said Taniguci, cracking her knuckles and Manabe could see a wicked glint in her eyes.
"If you say so…" muttered Manabe.
Manabe reluctantly nodded her head and she glanced at Yamazaki, who nodded her head in response and it seemed like she's formulating a plan. However, the eventual clash between Taniguchi's and Ikeda's gang will come sooner than later.
Timeskip (few days later)*
"Ohashi! Are you okay?! What happened?!" cried Manabe.
Manabe had received a call from Ohashi, but she didn't answer when Manabe accepted the call. All she could hear was Ohashi groaning in pain and silence for a few moments and before Maanbe could end the call, Ikeda spoke up and told Manabe to come and find Ohashi at a certain location. It was the alleyway where Manabe met and saved Oshahi during their first encounter. With that information, Manabe got a few girls with her and since they were in a hurry to get to Ohashi, they didn't inform Taniguchi and Yamazaki.
Manabe could see the injuries that Ohashi sustained as there were bruises and blood all over her body. There were numerous bruises that varied in different shades of color and size as Manabe could see dark-blue, black, green, and yellow bruises all over Ohashi's body as her face was swollen up and her nose was broken with blood running down her face. Oshahi's right eye was also swollen and darkened as a black eye was forming.
"S-Shiho-onee-chan… I-Ikabe was here and s-she's waiting for you right now." said Ohashi, weakly. She grasped Manabe's hand desperately and Manabe could hear the desperation in the tone of her voice.
"Where is Ikabe?" demanded Manabe. She gripped Ohashi's hands tightly as her hands were shaking with anger. Manabe's tone turned angry and filled with fury as she was seeking retribution for Ohashi.
"Right behind you!" called out a voice.
Manabe turned around and saw Ikabe standing with a big group of girls at the entrance of the alleyway. Manabe turned around and saw the other end of the alleyway was being blocked by more of Ikabe's gang. Manabe realized that it was a trap and Manabe was outnumbered and didn't have any chance of escaping.
"Ah! The little runt is back for another beating!" said Ikabe, with a wicked smile.
Ikabe recognized Manabe as she remembered their first encounter and how Manabe became a prominent member of Taniguchi's gang as she fought against various members of her gang. In response, Manabe got up and gently placed Ohashi on the ground, who groaned in response and protested for Manabe to retreat and to leave her behind.
"S-Shiho-onee-chan, you should run! L-Leave me before it's too late!" said Ohashi.
"And leave you? Fuck, no! If a fight is what they want, then they'll get one!" said Manabe, cracking her knuckles as she glared at Ikabe. The few girls that Manabe brought with her got into a fighting position and surrounded the fallen Ohashi. However, they were heavily outnumbered.
"I see that you still have a pair of balls!" said Ikabe, laughing and some of the girls laughed as well. The laughter surrounded Manabe as the noise traveled around the alleyway, bouncing between the walls and creating a loud noise of collective laughter.
Manabe gritted her teeth and her glare intensified at Ikabe as she shot Manabe a wicked smile, taunting her. Manabe wasn't sure what to do as she was outnumbered and couldn't do anything rash as she also had to protect the injured Ohashi. Her options were limited and the best thing she had to do was to take care of Ikabe, the leader and the person that kept everyone else in line. Manabe clenched her fist before making her decision.
"All right! Let's teach these bastards a lesson!" roared Manabe.
Manabe immediately charged at Ikabe, but a few girls stepped in her way as she rushed towards Ikabe. The girls that Manabe brought with her either followed her or ran the opposite direction to engage the other girls behind them.
The fight became a chaotic and unpredictable confrontation as punches, kicks, slaps, and other various techniques were being used. No one was trained in martial arts and were just using the fighting skills that they learned in street fights as the techniques were fueled with past experience and driven by adrenaline, with the main goal being to subdue or overpower the opponent as quickly as possible. It was a typical street fight and it was something that members of Taniguchi's and Ikabe's gang were used to.
Manabe did a quick jab with her right hand and it connected into the gut of her target. The girl gasped out loud as she recoiled from Manabe's jab and before she could do anything, Manabe grabbed her face and introduced it to her knee. Manabe heard a satisfying noise as the girl collapsed on the ground with her nose bleeding out. However, Manabe was focused on that girl and another girl sent an elbow strike to Manabe's ribs.
Manabe grunted in pain, but it seemed like the blow had done little to stop her as she was filled with anger and adrenaline as she sent a deadly and quick hook to her opponent's face. The girl cried out in pain and stumbled backwards, but she was still in fighting shape. Manabe cursed out loud as she was being surrounded and she saw Ikabe casually walking towards her as if she was taking a nice walk.
Manabe whipped around and connected a low kick onto a girl behind her as Manabee aimed for their knees, causing them to collapse to the ground. Manabe tried her best to fight them off, but she was surrounded and outnumbered which limited her movement and the number of opponents she had to fight. Manabe connected some blows, but most of them were blocked or had little effect on stopping the encirclement.
Eventually, Manabe was receiving too many strikes and kicks which slowed her down. Her body groaned in pain as Manabe was doing her best to stand him and fight. However, the adrenaline was running out and Manabe's body was in pain and was getting tired. One of the girls lunged and grabbed Manabe's legs and knocked her off her feet as she fell onto the ground.
Manabe grunted in pain as she landed hard on her back, but before she could do anything, all of the other girls surged forward, taking advantage of the opportunity. Manabe groaned in pain as she was being held down as a barrage of punches, strikes, and kicks were unleashed all over face and body. It seems some of the girls were taking vengeance for their fallen comrades or what Manabe did to them personally.
This lasted for a few minutes and Manabe's face was a bloody mess as she could feel that her nose was broken and her left eyes were swollen. Manabe can feel the stinging and agonizing pain throughout her body as she could feel all of the adrenaline and strength fading away rapidly. It took almost all of her strength to look up and glare at the Ikabe, who was approaching them. Manabe tried to fight back and stand up, but the girls held her down while the others made way for Ikabe.
Manabe glanced over and saw that most of the girls that she had brought with her were on the ground, unable to fight. There were a few barely standing and fighting, but it was clear that it was a losing fight as they were surrounded and outnumbered. It was only a matter of time before the fight was over.
"You motherfucker! Hiding behind your goons!" snarled Manabe. She winced in pain as she tried her best to break free the girls' grip, but her body was too battered and in pain to break free.
"Who gives a shit? It's all about strategy and you're just too fucking stupid to figure it out." snarled Ikabe.
Ikabe crouched down and got to Manabe's face as she taunted her, but it was a perfect opportunity for Manabe, who gathered all of her spit, and spat at Ikabe's face. It was a direct hit and Manabe's saliva splattered against her face and ran down her nose and cheeks. Manabe had a sick and satisfied feeling as she scored a direct hit on Ikabe. It wasn't a glorious beating, but it was a small victory which trampled on Ikabe's pride. Ikabe's face darkened as her gleeful and victorious expression turned grim and serious and Manabe could see the anger and fury in her eyes. Ikabe began pummeling Manabe's face with her punches as it alternated with jabs, uppercuts, and hooks.
"You fuckign bitch! You think you're hot shit!" snarled Ikabe.
Ikabe launched a flurry of curses directed at Manabe as she pounded Mnabe's face for a few minutes out of pure frustration. Since Ikabe was older than Manabe, her blows were a lot harder and effective than the others. Due to Manabe's weakened body, she was starting to feel more pain and eventually, her face became too numb with pain as it became too much to deal with.
Manabe's eyes dimmed as she was seeing spots as a hard punch rattled her eyes on her skull. She ran out of energy and couldn't even move anymore, much less block Ikabe's punches and break out of the other girls' hold on her. Manabe's face became a bigger mess of blood and saliva as all she could do was to endure Ikabe's fury. After a few minutes, Ikabe was finished and she backed away from Manabe's body as she was panting and gasping for breath. Manabe was doing her best and using all of her will to get up, but was unable to.
"You have balls, kid. I'll give you that." said Ikabe, her tone was filled with surprise and a bit of respect.
"I-I don't need your respect." grunted Manabe.
"Hahaha! It's such a shame that you joined Taniguchi's gang. You would've been a valuable member of my gang."
"W-Why would join a pussy gang like yours?"
"The only pussies I see are you. At least you put up a fight unlike her. She cried like a bitch and folded right away."
Ikabe's face morphed to a wicked smile as she stared at Ohashi's fallen body. Manabe knew what exactly Ikabe was planning and Manabe began screaming and cursing at her. Ohashi was already injured and was unable to run away as Ikabe approached her. Manabe did not want Ohashi to take another beating like her.
"You bitch! Leave her alone!" demanded Manabe.
"Why? It doesn't seem like you can stop if you try." said Ikabe, cackling.
Ikabe approached Ohashi, who had a frightened look on her face as she remembered the pain that she had to endure due to Ikabe and her gang. Ohashi tried to retreat, but her body was too tired and beaten up and all she could do was watch in horror as Ikabe approached her.
"Stop it! L-Leave her alone!" shouted Manabe.
"Shut the fuck up! Let her see what happens when you defy our gang!" ordered Ikabe.
Two girls forced Manabe up and got her on her knees and they used her hands to hold Manabe's face in place as they forced her to look towards Ikabe's direction. Ikabe stood in front of Ohashi and stared down at her as they were about to force Manabe to watch helplessly as Ikabe violently beat up Ohashi. Manabe closed her eyes out of frustration and didn't want to see it, but they were forcing Manabe's eyes open to force her to watch the gruesome scene in front of her. Before Ikabe could do anything to Ohashi, a loud and familiar voice rang throughout the alleyway which caused everyone to stop what they were doing.
"Having a good time, aren't ya Ikabe?" shouted Taniguchi.
Taniguchi's voice was loud and booming, but Manabe could hear the anger and fury in the tone of her voice. The girls that were holding Manabe dropped her onto the cold alleyway ground. Manabe could see that Taniguchi was flanked by a huge number of girls from her gang and some of them had concerned looks when they saw the state that Manabe and the others were in. Others were enraged and looked ready to strike. Manabe couldn't see Yamazaki anywhere and found it strange since she did send a message to her, asking for help.
"We did tell you not to rush into trouble, Shiho." said Taniguchi.
"Getting into trouble is Shiho's speciality after all. It's not like she listens, right?" said Yamazaki.
Yamazaki's voice echoed throughout the alleyway and Manabe turned out and saw Yamazaki with a few others at the opposite side of the alleyway. It was the opposite of Taniguchi's position and they had Ikabe and her gang surrounded. Manabe did a quick count and realized that the numbers of both sides were even and it would seem like an even fight between both gangs.
"Taniguchi…" scowled Ikabe.
"Yo, Ikabe. It's been a while, huh? Why don't ya stop beating up my underlings?" asked Ikabe.
"W-When since I've become your underling?" demanded Manabe.
"Hahaha! You still haven't lost your touch after getting beat up, Manabe?"
"Fuck off!"
"Shut the fuck up! She's talking to me! Don't you think it's time to finish what we started, Taniguchi? After all, you'll be history after tomorrow." said Ikabe.
"What the fuck that's supposed to mean?" demanded Manabe.
Manabe glanced over at Taniguchi, who lost her composure for a brief moment before regaining it. Most people wouldn't have noticed, but Manabe happened to be looking at her at the moment and caught it. Then, Manabe glanced over at Yamazaki, who had the same uneasiness as Taniguchi, but did her best to hide it for everyone's sake.
"Hahaha! That means you didn't tell anyone from your gang, huh? Well, I suppose I can spoil it for everyone. Taniguchi and-" said Ikabe.
"Get those bastards! Show them that they can't mess with us and get away with it!" roared Taniguchi.
With a fearsome shout, Taniguchi charged directly at Ikabe which interrupted her before she could reveal a secret that Tnaiguchi and Yamazaki was hiding from the entire gang. Manabe made a mental note to grill them for the details after they finished the fight.
Ikabe and Taniguchi engaged in a one-on-one fight without any interference from anyone. It was their pride as the leader of their respective gang and everyone else was focused on their own respective fights.
Manabe managed to get to her feet and tackled an unexpecting target with their back turned to Manabe. Nobody would've expected Manabe, who has already sustained severe injuries, to be standing up and fighting again.
"It's good to see that you still have some fight with you, Shiho!" said Yamazaki, noticing Manabe.
"Some bitches wouldn't stop me from beating their asses!" said Manabe.
"Atta girl!"
This became a typical street fight, but it was larger than the previous ones as the number of combatants increased and everyone was giving their all. Since most of their fighters from both gangs are there, everyone is giving it their all and using all of their abilities to beat their opponents as this is the final fight for them. The fate of everyone is determined by the winner of this all-out street brawl.
The brawl lasted for about 10 minutes as members of both gangs fell and various fighting techniques were being unleashed. Manabe was gasping for breath as she leaned against the alleywall's wall for support and was barely standing at all as she was pushing her body beyond her limits. She could barely even stand now and her knuckles are bruised and aches as she was using them too much after punching several people at once.
"Shiho! Take a rest! We'll finish this!" said Yamazaki.
"But I-" protested Manabe.
Manabe tried to run along Yamazaki and join her in the fight, but her legs gave out and she fell to her knees while leaning against the alleyway's wall. Manabe's body was shaking out of pain and exhaustion as the last burst of adrenaline that she gained ran out completely. All she could do was watch helplessly as the rest of the fight continued on without her.
After a few more minutes, the brawl was over. Girls from both gangs were laying on the floor, groaning and moaning in pain. Others were checking up on their comrades that were still standing and everyone had some form of visible injuries ranging from bruises, black eyes, broken noises, bleeding open wounds, and various other injuries.
Taniguchi was standing over the body of Ikabe, who was barely conscious and was beaten badly. Taniguchi sustained some heavy injuries, but it wasn't as bad as Ikade, as both girls were breathing heavily from their fight and it was clear that both girls gave it their all.
"It looks… like you won this time, Taniguchi. Damn, you've gotten stronger." said Ikabe, grunting in pain and gasping for air. Ikabe was staring helplessly at Taniguchi who was standing above her.
"That's what you get from messing with my underlings." said Taniguchi.
"Hahaha! It's a great fight… A good final fight, huh?"
"Shut the fuck up."
Taniguchi slammed her fist violently against Ikabe's head and the alleyway fell into silence for a brief moment before it erupted into cheers and shouts of celebration as Tangiuchi's gang had won the fight and took revenge against Ikabe's gang.
However, Manabe was silent as the word "final" that Ikabe used haunted her mind as she began connecting the pieces. She had noticed that Ikabe's tone of voice seemed annoyed and nostalgic as if it will the last time that she will see Taniguchi.
"Let's go, everyone! Help the injured ones!" ordered Yamazaki.
The remaining girls that were standing began checking on their fallen comrades and Manabe saw Taniguchi heading towards her. She stopped in front of Manabe and reached out her hand towards her. Taniguchi's goal was to help Manabe up, a gesture of comradery, but Manabe slapped Taniguchi's hand away. Manabe slowly and painfully stood up by herself and stumbled for a bit, but before she could fall, Taniguchi caught her and wrapped an arm around her. Taniguchi was supporting Manabe as she was struggling to even stand up straight and walk at the same time, but Manabe was doing her best to push Taniguchi away and resist any form of help.
"I… I'm not your underling." grumbled Manabe.
"Shut up! Take the help you can get. There's no point in keeping your pride." said Taniguchi.
"Ugh!"
Manabe reluctantly accepted Taniguchi's help and they began checking up on everyone. Most of them seemed okay, but just had some injuries due to the fight. A few were seriously injured like Manabe and Ohashi and required someone's help to support them. Yamazaki was supporting Ohashi, who seemed barely conscious at this point.
"Let's get out of here!" ordered Taniguchi.
With that, the Taniguchi gang fled the scene of the alleyway where the Ikabe's gang were lying down on the ground, groaning and grunting in pain. It was the scene of
Timeskip (45 minutes later)*
"Ow! Stop doing that shit! That fucking hurts!" snapped Manabe.
"What'cha mean, Shiho? It's fucking rubbing alochol! Of course, it's gonna hurt! You need to clean out the wound!" chided Yamazaki.
Yamazaki's tone was annoyance and frustration as this was the first time that Manabe kept complaining and tried slapping her hand away from her. It already occurred multiple times as Yamazaki was cleaning out Manabe's open wounds and applying bandages to it, but Manabe kept cursing and slapping Yamazaki's hand away due to the stinging pain from the rubbing alcohol.
"You kept trying to get up and fight after getting fucked up, but you're scared shitless from rubbing alcohol. I fucking can't! Hahaha!" said Taniguchi, cackling out loud as she slapped her knees out of amusement.
"Shut the fuck up!" snapped Manabe.
"Why don't you help me instead of watching?" asked Yamazaki.
"Nope! It's too funny to see Shiho struggling like this!" said Taniguchi.
"Fuck you!" snarled Manabe.
"Of course, I get the hardest job." muttered Yamazaki.
Yamazaki spent a few more minutes cleaning Manabe's wounds and bandaging up any open wounds before stepping away. Manabe felt a little better, but also had a feeling of feeling restrained due to all of the bandages all over her body. Everyone that participated in the fight was also bandaged up and seemed to be in good spirits after their victory. Some were even chatting about it while others remained silent.
"How's Ohashi?" asked Manabe.
"She's asleep. That girl is pretty tough." said Yamazaki.
"Wait a minute! I have something to ask you about. Ikabe said something about a final fight. What does that mean?" asked Manabe, remembering what Ikabe said before their final brawl. Ikabe's words bothered Manabe and she couldn't get those words out of her mind.
"Ahh… so, you've remembered. Fucking Ikabe and her big mouth." grumbled Yamazaki.
"So, something's up! What is it? Why are you so quiet, Taniguchi?!"
Taniguchi fell into silence as her laughter and smile died away. She exchanged looks with Yamazaki, who nodded in response. Manabe could sense some kind of tension as if Taniguchi and Yamazaki were keeping a secret from everyone and is suddenly revealing it right now. The other members in the room held their breaths or exchanged nervous glances directed at each other as they sensed the tension between Taniguchi and Yamazaki.
"To tell you the truth, Shiho and everyone… Yamazaki and I are transferring schools. We'll be leaving this town and the gang!" said Taniguchi.
Taniguchi's sudden announcement left everyone shocked and in awe at how sudden the news is and the changes to their gang. Some gasped out loud while others stared at Taniguchi or Yamazaki with widened eyes filled with shock and disbelief.
"What?! It can't be! Are you joking?" demanded Manabe, unable to accept the news as she shook her head.
"I'm not. We're transferring in a few days." said Taniguchi.
"Why?"
"Our shitty fathers decided to move fucking towns because they're shitty and that's it."
Taniguchi made her explanation brief and simple as she gave a simple reason for their move, but Manabe had a feeling that there's more to it. Manabe was about to press further for details, but she could see Yamazaki shaking her head at her and the look from Taniguchi's face. It was a mixed expression of anger, sadness, and regret as if she was angry that she had to move and didn't have the power to stop it.
There were shouts and cries from the various members of the gang as they expressed their disbelief and sorrow after hearing news of their leader's and co-leader's departure. There was a rising thought in their minds regarding the future of the Taniguchi's gang.
"What about the rest of us? What will happen to us?" asked Manabe.
Manabe's voice grew a little shaky and was filled with disbelief, anxiety, and doubt as she wasn't sure about the future of the Taniguchi's gang. Manabe was worried that everyone would leave and that with no leadership, everyone else would be hopeless and defenseless from any other gangs.
Taniguchi's and Yamazaki's leadership helped bring everyone together and they were the foundation of the gang as they recruited new members and gave everyone comfort and a place of belonging. Everyone including Manabe, even though she didn't want to publicly admit it, was thankful and was happy that they joined Taniguchi's gang. It was a place that brought everyone together and a sense of belonging, away from their terrible personal life.
"Obviously…" said Taniguchi.
Taniguchi's voice trailed off for a brief moment and it built the suspense for dramatic effect. Usually, Manabe would curse at Taniguchi for being a drama queen and dragging it out, but this time, Manabe decided to let it go. Everyone remained silent and held their breaths, anxiously waiting for Taniguchi's response that would decide the fate of the Taniguchi's gang. It seemed like the room was collectively holding their breaths and waiting for Taniguchi.
"It will continue. I appoint Shiho as the new leader!" announced Taniguchi.
Manabe was shocked by Taniguchi's announcement and was in a state of shock and disbelief as she stared blankly at Taniguchi, unable to process what she just said. She couldn't believe that she was chosen by Taniguchi and wasn't sure that she had the ability to lead a group of people. Manabe couldn't even help herself and navigate her terrible life and relationship with her mother, much less a group of people that will look up to her. Some of them are even older than her and should be more qualified than her.
The other girls turned their attention to Manabe as their faces were a mix of shock, disbelief, doubt, and various other emotions. They were all saddened by Taniguchi's news, but after being given the news of the sudden departure of their leaders and who their new leader is, there were mixed feelings about it.
There were some cries of support for Manabe as Manabe's friends in the gang and girls that looked up to Manabe echoed their agreement and support. Some were protected by Manabe or simply looked at her. Others had their doubts on Manabe's leadership skills, but ultimately, they trusted Taniguchi's judgement and Yamazaki, who was seen as the brains, didn't object at all.
"Any objections?" asked Tangiuchi.
Taniguchi had noticed some doubts from her fellow gang members and directly asked for any objections before proceeding in officially declaring Manabe as the new leader. Taniguchi glanced around the room and locked eyes with everyone. There were a few people shaking their heads, but there were no verbal objections. Taniguchi turned towards Manabe, who was silent up to this point.
"Anything to say, Shiho?" asked Taniguchi.
"Y-Yeah. What the fuck are you thinking?! I can't barely even take care of myself, much less lead a gang of people! I also don't know shit about leadership!" protested Manabe.
"Well that should be fine. I have a feeling that you'll just do fine without me and Yamazaki."
"At least, think about your decision before going off on a whim!"
There was some laughter as Manabe and Taniguchi did their usual routine and traded verbal blows back at each other. It was something that everyone was used to and at one point seen and heard. It helped ease the minds of some of the people that doubted Manabe, but it helped relieve some of the tension and anxiety after the sudden news. Manabe waited for the laughter to die down before speaking up.
"But… if that's what you want Taniguchi, then I'll do it. I may not be the best leader that you all hope for, but I will be the one that we all need. You better not regret this, Taniguchi." said Manabe.
"I won't." said Taniguchi.
"Let's party!" shouted Yamazaki.
There was a roar of approval after Manabe accepted her new position as the leader and Yamazaki's declaration of a party. It helped brighten the dark, sad, and damp mood after everyone heard about Taniguchi's and Yamazaki's sudden departure. Yamazaki brought out several large plastic bags filled to the brim with snacks and refreshments for a small party.
It took a few minutes, but everything was brought out and laid out on a long table with various different snacks, sweets, and drinks. Someone even grabbed a radio and got music playing through the speakers of the radio. The mood was replaced by a vibrant, lively, and festive atmosphere filled with enthusiasm, celebration, and a general feeling of joy and excitement. Before Manabe joined the celebration, she decided to check up on Ohashi, who was barely awake and surprised that there was a celebration.
"What's happening?" asked Ohashi as she was trying to sit up, but winced and grunted in pain.
"Whoa! Calm down! Just stay down, Ohashi. It's just a party." said Manabe, stopping her from sitting up and gently laying her back down on the couch.
"Did something good happen?"
"It depends… Taniguchi and Yamazaki are transferring schools and will be leaving the gang."
"W-What?! No way! Wh-Who's gonna be in charge?!"
"They said I'm going to be."
"S-Shiho-onee-chan… a-are you really going to be?"
"Yeah, that's why we're partying. One last send-off party. And don't think about getting up. I'll beat the shit out of you if you do."
"Yes, boss."
Ohashi gave Manabe a mock salute before she stopped trying to sit up and lay down completely still, but her eyes still moved as she stared at the party that's in front of her. Manabe promised to get some refreshments for Ohashi and Ohashi began bombarding her with requests. Manabe rolled her eyes and gave Ohashi a middle finger and reminded her that she's not her servant. Ohashi laughed out loud, but Manabe could tell that it's strained as it sounded like Ohashi was in pain when she laughed, but nevertheless she still retained her smile.
"Take it easy, Ohashi. I'll be back." said Manabe.
"See ya, Shiho-onee-chan." said Ohashi.
Manabe returned back to the party and before she could meet her other friends, Taniguchi approached her with a drink in her hands. Manabe noticed that Yamazaki was not with her and she saw Yamazaki at the other side of the room, chatting with a few girls.
"Shiho. The person that I'm looking for." said Taniguchi.
Taniguchi guided Manabe and they went to a quiet corner of the room where there was less noise and eavesdroppers or any outside interference.
"Shiho… I know what you're thinking. You are probably thinking that you're not fit as the leader. Your speech was to help cheer everyone up, but don't worry! Your older and dependable onee-chan is here to help you!" said Taniguchi, with a smirk on her face. Taniguchi couldn't resist teasing Manabe even though she knew that she would retaliate back.
"I fucking hate that you know what I'm thinking, but… yeah." said Manabe. Taniguchi was a little surprised that Manabe easily gave in and didn't retaliate back.
"Well… It looks like you're changing, Shiho. I'm glad to know that you'll be a good leader. A bit of advice from your onee-chan: don't fuck up."
"No shit! What kind of advice is that?!"
"A good one. Think about how to survive so far and apply it to the entire gang. You didn't fuck up and you made it this far. So, you just gotta do what's best for you and everyone. Simple as that. Don't fuck up.:
"That's so fucking vague! It's like saying get good! Is that honestly your best advice?!"
"I mean it worked out for us, right?"
"Yamazaki was probably the one doing all of the heavy lifting then!"
"You ungrateful brat! C'mere!"
Taniguchi grabbed Manabe and put her in a tight headlock in a playful manner. She wasn't putting too much pressure as she didn't want to hurt Manabe, but she did manage to hold Manabe in place and prevent her from moving and fighting back at full strength. Manabe desperately slapped Taniguchi's arms and struggled to break free from the headlock.
However, Manabe was unable to break out of Taniguchi's tight grip and she struggled for a few more moments before tapping rapidly on one of Taniguchi's arms, a gesture of surrender. Taniguchi let Manabe go and she cursed at Taniguchi before gently rotating her head to check if her neck was okay. Taniguchi's headlock could be quite painful if she put some force into it, but luckily for Manabe, Taniguchi was doing it playfully and was messing with her.
"Look out for the others, Shiho. Just like you looked out for yourself. That's all to it. It's nothing too fancy and inspiration." said Taniguchi.
It was simple, but effective advice. All Manabe could do was nod her head as she was starting to understand Taniguchi's advice and the full weight of it.
"C'mon! Don't be like that! Let's party like we have never before!" said Taniguchi, slapping Manabe playfully on the arm.
"Fine." replied Manabe.
With that, the 2 girls joined the rest of the party as it was time of celebration. For their former leader, co-leader, and the inauguration of their new leader, Manabe. Manabe had the feeling that her new position of leader will come with a set of challenges as this is completely different from being under Taniguchi's and Yamazaki's command. It was something personal and something that she has to overcome as a leader.
"And that's how I became the boss." said Manabe.
"A leadership position… And you remained in charge before moving to ANHS?" asked Ayanokouji.
"Yeah, but there was some shit that happened. I don't feel like going over with. I've said enough about my past for now."
"I see… I hope you can confide in me later if you're feeling up to it."
"Tch… what a noisy person."
Ayanokouji had the feeling that there's more to Manabe's past as she didn't go over what happened during her new position as leader of her own gang now. He could see correlation between her past and overprotectiveness of her own friends as the experience of being part of Taniguchi's gang and eventually taking over as the new leader must have strengthened her resolve to protect the ones that she's close to. That explains why she was willing to protect Morofuji, Nanami, and Yamashita despite facing the wrath of Ryuuen.
Ayanokouji and Manabe were sitting at a nearby bench and were chatting about Manabe's past while they were sipping their respective drinks. It took about 20 minutes for them
The evening sky slowly faded away and the dark sky was replaced by an even darker sky filled with black as little stars began revealing themselves. It's soon becoming nighttime and the curfew for students is growing closer. The evening autumn breeze faded away and the atmosphere felt cold and uninviting like a cold, winter night.
"Hey… We should leave." said Ayanokouji, tossing his empty bottle into a nearby trash can.
"Yeah, let's go. I'm hungry now." said Manabe, getting up from the comfort of the bench.
The duo began making their way towards the main path and when they arrived there, they began heading towards the direction of the first year dorms. The walk was quiet and peaceful as the duo traversed the brightly lit main path.
"You haven't had dinner yet?" asked Ayanokouji, breaking the silence.
"Yeah. I was just busy with some stuff." said Manabe.
Before Ayanokouji could reply, the convenience store emerged into view. The convenience store was located about halfway from the first year dorms and the Keiyaki Mall which is also operational 24 hours. Ayanokouji could see that Manabe was eyeing the convenience store and its brightly lit storefront as they walked past it.
"You know what… I'm going to get some dinner. Wanna come?" asked Manabe, stopping and turning towards Ayanokouji.
"No, I already ate." replied Ayanokouji.
"Shucks…"
"Miss me that much, Manabe?"
"Tch… You wish, motherfucker. Get the fuck out of here!"
Manabe turned her back to Ayanokouji and waved him off before she started making her way to the convenience store's entrance. The automatic sliding doors parted ways and revealed the convenience store along with a playful tone and automated voice that welcomed Manabe. But before Manabe could enter the convenience store, she stopped and spoke to Ayanokouji without turning to face him.
"See ya around, Ayanokouji. Thanks for listening to me." said Manabe.
Manabe didn't turn around to face Ayanokouji directly because she was worried that she might get those words out of her mouth or Ayanokouji could see that she's very flustered. She did not want Ayanokouji to see her in that kind of state.
"Good night, Manabe." replied Ayanokouji.
With that, Manabe entered the convenience store and the automatic doors closed, obstructing Ayanokouji's view of Manabe and the inside of the convenience store. Ayanokouji decided to head back to the first year dorms, but as he was walking, he could barely spot someone familiar. They were alone and away from the main path, away with prying eyes. Ayanokouji realized that now was his chance to strike. Ayanokouji slowly and carefully made their way to them and she didn't seem to notice Ayanokouji's presence and seemed deep in thought and distracted. It was different from her usual self and Ayanokouji could tell that she was deeply troubled by something.
"Karuizawa, what are you doing here?" asked Ayanokouji.
Ayanokouji's question and presence shocked Karuizawa, who nearly leapt out of her seat on the bench and spilled the drink that she was holding. Her expression on her face was one of surprise, shock, panic, and desperation. It lasted for a brief moment before her face morphed into an annoyed and prideful expression, the one that Karuizawa usually has during school.
"Ayanokouji-kun! What are you doing here? Don't tell me that you were following me?" asked Karuizawa.
"No. I just happened to be in the area and I saw you." replied Ayanokouji.
"Jeez… that was creepy! You just came out of nowhere and out of darkness. Why are you so quiet at the time? It's kind of creepy sometimes!"
Karuizawa seems to have gotten into a rant about Ayanokouji and how abnormally quiet he is. Ayanokouji remained silent as he observed Karuizawa, noticing that her behavior instantly changed from quiet and deep in thought to her usual strong-headed persona. Since he knew about her past, he could see the subtle changes to her behavior unlike her friends and fellow classmates.
"And don't remind me of-" said Karuizawa.
"Karuizawa. It would be terrible if things went back to how they were back in the old days. I understand that you want to prevent it." said Ayanokouji, interrupting her.
"Huh? What are you talking about?"
"Manabe knowing your past and secrets. I'm sure you'll want to keep yourself safe, huh?"
'Karuizawa's weakness was that she couldn't stand being seen as a victim by the rest of the school. Karuizawa could find many ways to escape back at school, but she couldn't continue playing hide-and-seek with Manabe forever. Her classmates would eventually notice a change in Karuizawa's behavior. Karuizawa desperately wanted to fix this situation. I'd been waiting for that desperation. Time was my friend and given enough time, Karuizawa's desperation grew as she's constantly anxious as Manabe knew her secret and waited for my past to be revealed. It worsens especially when rumors of her and Hirata breaking up spread. Karuizawa's fear of losing her shield is enough to cause a new level of desperation.' thought Ayanokouji.
The silence between Ayanokouji and Karuizawa grew as the tension between the duo grew. Karuizawa's face was one of surprise, panic, and desperation as she wondered how Ayanokouji knew about her past and the fact that he knew that Manabe knew about her past. She was panicked by the growing number of people knowing about her past in the school.
"I meant exactly what I said. You've managed to escape by getting into this prestigious school and rising through the ranks to reign supreme at the head of Class D. But in the end, you haven't really changed at all. You're still that bullied little girl." said Ayanokouji.
"Wh-who are you talking about?!" shouted Karuizawa. Her tone grew into anger and desperation as she tried to play it off and acted like she had no idea what Ayanokouji was saying.
"You, Karuizawa."
Ayanokouji grabbed her arm and forced her up. Karuizawa yelped out loud and the drink that she was holding fell to the cold, concrete floor and its contents spilled on the ground. Ayanokouji could see the desperation and panic on Karuizawa's face as her facade that she built was slowly crumbling. Ayanokouji pinned her up against the nearby vending machine and forced her to look him in the eye.
"H-hey, what are you doing?!" demanded Karuizawa.
"Manabe tormented you just now, yes? Acted like the bullies from your past. You're scared, right? Scared about your past being revealed to everyone. Scared that people are going to treat you differently. Scared that you will lose everything that you built. Scared that everything is going to return back to the junior high 's why you ended up like this: miserable, pathetic, and anxious, waiting for it to happen again." said Ayanokouji.
"Wha—"
Karuizawa froze in mid sentence as their eyes met. The duo stared at each other as if they were being sucked into one another. Ayanokouji stared deeply into Karuizawa's eyes and it could be mistaken as love and romantic interest, but there was none of it. All Ayanokouji could see was the darkness that Karuizawa carried along with the pain, desperation, and panic in her eyes.
"You were bullied ever since you were little. You were a victim throughout elementary school and junior high. You wanted to act tough so you could stop being bullied. Am I right?" asked Ayanokouji, using the opportunity to force a confession from Karuizawa.
"D-did you hear this...from Hirata-kun?" asked Karuizawa. Her tone changed to desperation and anxiety. It was a different version of Karuizawa now and that's what Ayanokouji wanted.
"Hirata is everyone's ally, for better or worse. He'll help you, like he'll help anyone. Even if you got your position in Class D by pretending to be Hirata's girlfriend, he won't be of any use to you in situations like this. He isn't a good enough host for a parasite like you."
"What are you... Why are you doing this, huh?!"
"Why? It's obvious, isn't it? You need to understand your situation. Don't you know who's standing in front of you right now? It's not Hirata; it's me. I know everything. I know about your past. I know about your fake relationship with Hirata. I even know that Manabe confronted you and you started bawling and panicking about the potential of your past being leaked to the entire school. I know everything about Karuizawa Kei."
'I knew everything that Karuizawa Kei wanted to hide. I had her heart in my hands. Right now, I would decide whether she lived or died. I also wanted to see how far she's willing to go to protect herself.' thought Ayanokouji.
"If you don't do as I say, I can expose you." added Ayanokouji.
"D-Don't screw with me! Who the hell do you think you are?!" shouted Karuizawa. Karuizawa understood better than anyone how terrifying that was. Her body began shaking at the thought of it.
"Someone who knows the truth. Nothing more, nothing less."
Ayanokouji moved in closer, so close to her that their faces almost touched. When Karuizawa turned her face away and tried to avert her eyes, Ayanokouji grabbed her chin and forced her to look at him. She wanted to look away, but with a man's strength bearing down on her, she couldn't move. She closed her eyes, as if trying to escape his gaze.
"What, what do you want with me?! You're just after my body, aren't you?" screamed Karuizawa as the desperation and anxiety reached its climax and her body couldn't stop shaking.
"Your body, huh? You know, that doesn't sound too bad." replied Ayanokouji.
Ayanokouji ran his fingertips across Karuizawa's thighs. He could feel Karuizawa's silky smooth skin. Karuizawa yelped out and tried to escape from Ayanokouji's touch. But Ayanokouji held her tighter and forced her to look straight at him.
"Don't run. If you try it again, I'll tell everyone at school what I know about you." said Ayanokouji.
With those magic words, it was super effective as Karuizawa froze and her body posture stiffened. Karuizawa growled at Ayanokouji, but she did not resist and Ayanokouji had one more test for Karuizawa.
'Rage, panic, fear, despair: How many negative feelings had Karuizawa been carrying? She now realized that I was completely different from the person she knew from school. The person that she somewhat trusted and is always surrounded by girls. This is the last thing she expects from me. She probably found it terrifying.' thought Ayanokouji.
"Spread your legs." commanded Ayanokouji.
There were a few moments of silence filled with tension between the duo. Karuizawa slowly opened her legs, tears streaming down her face as she did so. Even if Karuizawa knew that she was about to be violated, she still wanted to protect her position. The pain she felt from her years of being bullied had won out. Ayanokouji placed his hand on his belt buckle and pretended to rattle it. Even so, Karuizawa didn't run and it looked like she was trying to accept this. Karuizawa looked at Ayanokouji with empty eyes. This final act confirmed Ayanokouji's suspicions and he knew that he had won.
'There was no doubt about it. Karuizawa Kei has become a perfect tool for me. I didn't actually care about her body; I just needed to threaten her to see how far she was willing to go, how much she would do. She probably understood that. Revealing my true self to her was a big risk. If Karuizawa reported me to the school, I'd be in enormous trouble. However, she feared her past and losing her current social status more than anything else. That was why she'd go so far as to offer up her body if someone requested it, if it would protect her secret.' thought Ayanokouji.
"I'll never bow to you. I won't be bullied by the likes of you. You just want to mess with me! You think you can do whatever you want, you pervert?!" shouted Karuizawa.
Karuizawa roared with anger, as if it was welling up from deep within her heart. However Ayanokouji could see through it, it was a last ditch effort to intimidate him. It was similar to a dying animal roaring with anger and doing its best to look fearsome, a last ditch effort to scare away potential predators in order to survive.
"Well, whatever. It's not like this is the first time someone's used force against me. So. Did you know about that, too? How do you think I should act in an impossible situation?" said Kaurizawa.
Still trembling, Karuizawa gave a thin smile and looked at Ayanokouji with an intense darkness in her eyes. Ayanokouji could see the pain, fear, and trauma in her eyes as it reflected the intensity of her past, but he decided to let her continue on.
"After a while, I gave up trying to resist. That's right; I was everyone's victim. I became cold, robotic. I could cry, scream, or thrash around, but it didn't matter. I couldn't do anything. All I could do was take it." said Karuizawa.
Karuizawa, as if accepting it all, lifted her skirt and touched her panties. It was a compromising position and some individuals may find it arousing, but Ayanokouji was unaffected and continued staring at Karuizawa. Ayanokouji grabbed her slender arm and pushed her up against the wall.
"What happened to you?" asked Ayanokouji.
"What happened? All sorts of things. Everything and anything. They'd put tacks in my shoes or stuff my desk full of roadkill. When I went to the bathroom, I'd get splashed with dirty water. They wrote words like 'whore' on my uniform. They pulled my hair and punched and kicked me. Anything you could imagine, basically. I was bullied in every way. Countless times. What I've just told you was just a fraction of what I've experienced. Those were the 'gentler' ways I've been bullied, too. It makes me want to laugh. So, why aren't you laughing? Why don't you laugh at the pitiful loser who's been bullied all her life?" said Karuizawa.
'Even after everything she'd suffered, she still got back up. She seemed ready to fight again. Her resilience had motivated her to enroll in this school. Still...the experiences she'd recounted weren't enough to explain everything. I believed that something critical had shattered her spirit before this. There had to be some other reason behind her abnormal fearfulness, something that Karuizawa wanted to hide so much that it was worth giving up her body.' thought Ayanokouji.
"What else have you suffered?" asked Ayanokouji.
"Huh?" said Karuizawa, making an attempt to act confused and unsure on what Ayanokouji was asking. However Ayanokouji saw through it.
"Have you told me the whole truth? What are you hiding?"
"Wh-what?"
Karuizawa turned her head from Ayanokouji and lowered her eyes to look down at her left side. Ayanokouji immediately noticed and he reached over and touched that part of her body, over her uniform. Karuizawa flinched at Ayanokouji's touch and he could see the sheer panic and desperation on her face. It was clear that she was hiding something on that very spot.
"S-stop!" shouted Karuizawa.
Her shouts echoed into the night sky and into the darkness. Karuizawa was lucky that there was no one around to see and hear about this which gave Ayanokouji the opportunity to do what he wanted with Karuizawa. Ayanokouji grabbed her uniform and pulled it up and it revealed a deep, ugly scar on her pale beautiful skin. It was clear that it was created by a very sharp blade and judging from the angle, Ayanokouji could guess that it was meant to cause harm and not actually kill Karuizawa.
"This is it? This is your darkness?" said Ayanokouji.
"U-ugh!" grunted Karuizawa.
'This wasn't the result of simple bullying. A serious scar like this had come from a life-threatening attack, but it was meant to cause harm rather than take Karuizawa's life. It's also not self-inflicted. Even though she was burdened with that horrible past, she remained tough. She got back on her feet. Over the past few months, I've keenly observed Karuizawa Kei. To protect herself, she forced people to become her allies. She protected her status, even if that meant being disliked.' thought Ayanokouji.
"Despair comes in many forms. And you've experienced despair. Haven't you?" asked Ayanokouji.
Karuizawa's eyes met with Ayanokouji's and they locked eyes for a few brief moments before breaking off. Karuizawa's body was still shaking as she was thrown off by Ayanokouji's strange behavior and the darkness in his eyes. Ayanokouji's eyes were like a flashlight, glowing in the darkness with his yellow pupils shining brightly.
"Y-You… You're the same as me." stuttered Karuizawa.
"No. I'm much worse." replied Ayanokouji.
"W-Worse? Is that bad?"
Karuizawa could detect no lies from Ayanokouji and was shocked by it. She wondered about Ayanokouji's past and how it was worse than hers. She was too afraid to ask Ayanokouji about his past, but she could see that Ayanokouji wouldn't voluntarily give that information out.
'If her past held her captive, then I had to forcefully free her from her shackles. Even if we weren't close, I could feel the darkness from her, through her skin. Yes. There were profoundly dark things left in this world that even Karuizawa didn't yet know about. Much worse than what she experienced.' thought Ayanokouji.
"I promise you one thing. From now on, I will protect you from bullying. I will be much more reliable than Hirata." said Ayanokouji.
"Wait. You meant that you can stop Manabe?" asked Karuizawa.
"Right now, you should understand what I'm saying. If the wind blows, a tiny flame goes out. However, a larger flame only grows bigger. It becomes so strong that it won't go out, not even in the face of wild winds or pouring rain. You will help me, and I will help you. Kindness has nothing to do with it. Do you have any problems with this arrangement?"
Ayanokouji could hear the hope and relief from Karuizawa's tone of voice. He could see the hope, desperation, and doubt in her face as if she was happy and hopeful that Ayanokouji had offered his assistance, but doubted that he could protect her as well as Hirata.
"Yes, but how would I know that you will fulfill your part of the arrangement? Can you stop Manabe?" asked Karuizawa.
"Oh. Don't worry. I have other plans to deal with Manabe."
"Oh, that's reassuring. H-How will I know that you'll keep your word?"
"What other choice do you have?"
"..."
Karuizawa's face
She realized that she was trapped since Ayanokouji had all the leverage and power over her and knew that she had no other choice, but to accept this arrangement. The rumors of her and Hirata fighting were circulating and her position in the class was weakening and she knew that Hirata's neutral stance would probably do more harm than good to her. Karuizawa would need to find another host.
"All I want is for people to cooperate with me. I want you to assist me in the future, doing whatever I need." said Ayanokouji.
"What? Assist? What do you want me to do?" asked Karuizawa.
"If things continue as they are, Class D will never overtake Class A. While the individual students within Class D certainly aren't incapable, we lack a sense of unity. Our class is scattered. However, if you control the girls for me, the situation will gradually improve."
'Her social pull made her an even more valuable ally than Suzune. And I would use Kushida, but her feud with Suzune is getting in my way. Karuizawa should suffice for now…' thought Ayanokouji.
"What are you trying to..." asked Karuizawa, who wouldn't understand Ayanokouji's motivation. As far as Karuizawa knew, Suzune was the one behind the success of the class and she had no idea why Ayanokouji wanted her help.
'Up until now, she'd only ever seen as a regular guy in Class my true self must've terrified her. But I was done explaining. Besides, the less I talked, the more terrifying I would appear. The less she would resist.' thought Ayanokouji.
"I'll contact you when I require your assistance. That is all. Do you understand?" asked Ayanokouji.
Karuizawa meekly nodded her head and the duo exchanged contact information before Karuizawa fled into the darkness. Ayanokouji watched her leave and picked up Karuizawa's empty bottle that she dropped and tossed it into a nearby trash can.
'After all, a parasite couldn't live without a host. By finding a new host, Karuizawa only had one way to go on living: with me. After all, it was me that planned everything. Manabe knowing her past and secrets, the confrontation between Manabe and her, and the rumors that her and Hirata are breaking up. The panic and desperation that she has experienced throughout the months as the fear of her past being revealed to the entire school was what I wanted. It was the perfect chance to make her my tool.' thought Ayanokouji.
Ayanokouji sat down at the bench and waited for a bit because he wanted to give Karuizawa time to leave the nearby vicinity. As Ayanokouji was waiting, his phone buzzed and he found a message from Kushida, asking him if she could come to his room. He replied and told her that he would be back to the dorms in about 10 minutes. Ayanokouji sighed as it seemed like he had to deal with another girl before the day was over.
Timeskip (15 minutes later)*
"Sorry for the intrusion!" said Kushida.
Ayanokouji was in the kitchen and was making some tea for himself and Kushida. Kushida was sitting on Ayanokouji's couch in the living room while he was preparing the boiling water for the green tea and some tea snacks.
"It's been a few days you've been here to vent your frustrations, right?" asked Ayanokouji. He remained in the kitchen and was waiting for the water to finish boiling.
"Duh. With all this shit going on, I hardly have time to worry about venting my frustrations. And now I'm fucking pissed off." said Kushida.
Kushida's tone was one of annoyance and frustration. Ayanokouji wondered how long Kushida could hold in her frustrations before she could vent her frustrations. If Ayanokouji didn't know about her true nature, he would have never guessed that Kushida had that kind of dark side which shows how good Kushida is at hiding her true nature from everyone else.
Ayanokouji listened in silence as Kushida began to vent her frustrations about her fellow classmates, friends, and other people that she had encountered during the past few days. Ayanokouji was used to it and fell into silence as he prepared the green tea and tea snacks, placing them on a plastic tray before bringing them out to Kushida.
Ayanokouji listened in silence as Kushida's rant and frustrations continued. Kushida stopped for brief moments out of time to take small sips of her tea to help clench her thirst as talking for a long extended period of time parches one's throat. After 10 more minutes, Kushida seemed to have gotten all of the frustrations and insults out of her system that was built up during the past few days. Kushida took a long deep breath to calm her nerves before speaking up.
"Oh. By the way, I have a question for you, Ayanokouji-kun." said Kushida.
"What is it?" asked Ayanokouji.
"Who would you prefer to win our little wager: Horikita-san or me?"
"Neither."
"What the fuck was that answer? Can you ever be serious?"
"It's up to Suzune and you to deal with it. I don't have any preferences on the winner. Everything is up to your abilities and whoever is more superior should be the winner. It's as simple as that."
"Fucking bitch!"
Kushida wanted to see if Ayanokouji would side with her rather than Suzune. She was a little disappointed and enraged that Ayanokouji wasn't choosing any sides, but she had the feeling that he knows more than he knows.
"Although, it would be a shame to lose you, Kushida." said Ayanokouji.
"W-What?! What are you saying?! Idiot!" hissed Kushida.
Kushida hid her face from Ayanokouji and averted her eyes from him at the same time. Ayanokouji could see that her cheeks were a little pink and it was clear that she didn't expect Ayanokouji to say something like that after clarifying that he didn't care about who won the wager.
Kushida was originally nervous about meeting Ayanokouji again because of her wager with Suzune. Ayanokouji looked like he's siding with Suzune since he wagered his private points privileges in her favor which gave Kushida the feeling that he's supporting her. That's why she asked him the previous question and his answer did not help confirm her suspicions, but it also didn't calm the intense feeling of doubt and anxiety that she had for the past few days. The fear that she could possibly lose the wager and the fact that Ayanokouji could potentially be her enemy didn't help reduce the anxiety.
That's why Kushida hasn't talked to Ayanokouji and asked to vent her frustration privately in his room since the day that Suzune and her made the wager. Up until now, she couldn't take the built-up tension and anxiety of the wager along with all the frustrations for the past few days.
"I'm not lying, Kushida. It would be a shame for you to lose the wager." said Ayanokouji, realizing that he made a mistake.
Ayanokouji forgot to include the last part of the sentence and the culprit was Sotomura's romance manga. He remembered one of the lines that the protagonist said and it was subconsciously in his mind as he said the exact same line to Kushida without thinking. Without adding the word "wager", it would've been confusing and it seems that Kushida took it the wrong way.
"Y-You fucking idiot! You're doing this on purpose!" said Kushida, swatting Ayanokouji's arm.
Ayanokouji could feel that Kushida put some force into it and it made a satisfying noise as her slap bounced off his arms. Kushida's tone was anger with a hint of disappointment as she realized Ayanokouji's mistake and how her blunder as she revealed her emotions to his sweet words. The last thing Kushida wanted was for Ayanokouji to know that she's swooning over his words.
However, Kushida could feel a feeling stirring deep inside of her heart. A growing desire that Kushida was trying to repress ever since she met Ayanokouji. Something that grew over time as the days grew and the number of encounters with Ayanokouji increased as well. The desire to grow closer to Ayanokouji along with the feeling of love, affection, and attachment. Those feelings and desires were growing exponentially and at first, Kushida was shocked by those feelings and tried to repress them. Kushida couldn't repress those feelings and desires for longer as she could feel herself lost and confused by those sudden feelings. But, given enough time, Kushida began to slowly accept these feelings and just like her desire to get attention and praise. She slowly got addicted and wanted Ayanokouji's love and attention as wanted it over everyone else. Kushida took a deep breath and made a silent, but internal vow to herself.
'Alright! I fucking hate that bastard for making me feel like this. But, it's too late. I can't stop these feelings and I don't why I'm feeling this way, but it all started when I met that bastard! Fuck it! I can't understand it, but I love it. The feeling when I spend time with Ayanokouji-kun. A secret that the both of us share. It's better than all of the praises and attention I get from everyone. And… It must be something that only I can have. No one else like those desperate bitches from our class would ever get. Those bitches always got in my way and the only thing they are good for is to raise my own popularity and status in the class. Especially that bitch, Horikita. How dare she get a headstart! Watch out, Ayanokouji-kun… I'm about to get serious.' thought Kushida.
With this vow, Kushida has steeled her nerves and resolve as this time, she turned her attention and gaze to Ayanokouji, who didn't expect her to recover so quickly and stare at him with such intensity. Ayanokouji remained blissfully unaware of how the power dynamics and relationship between himself, Kushida, and the rest of his soulmates are going to change from here on now.
"Is there something wrong, Kushida?" asked Ayanokouji, tilting his head out of confusion and curiosity.
Ayanokouji was confused by Kushida's sudden change in behavior as it looked like she rebounded from Ayanokouji's blunder and looked quite determined by something. However, Kushida responded with an eerie-looking smile on her face and Ayanokouji was filled with a strange feeling.
"Oh… It's nothing, Ayanokouji-kun. Just nothing." said Kushida.
Timeskip (next day)*
Ayanokouji was walking to school by himself and after Kushida's strange behavior, he had the feeling that she was planning something against her wager with Suzune. Ayanokouji wondered if Suzune had any plans to counter Kushida, but he remembered that he promised Suzune that he would not get involved with her feud with Kushida. But based on what he saw, Ayanokouji was sure on who would be the winner of the wager and the reason why he participated in their dangerous wager.
As Ayanokouji made his way towards the school building, he heard someone running up to him. The sounds of heels grew louder and closer as Ayanokouji had a bad feeling about the identity of that person. Ayanokouji could smell a strong scent of perfume that was doing its best to mask the scent of alcohol. However when that person got closer to Ayanokouji, he could feel their hair draped down on his shoulders and tickling his ears as he could smell their cocoa butter shampoo.
Due to the close proximity, Ayanokouji could feel a soft, but firm sensation pressed against his back. It was a sensation that Ayanokouji was used to and knew personally as that person continued to do this to him. Her energetic voice shattered Ayanokouji's boring and mundane morning walk to school.
"Good morning, Hoshinomiya-sensei." said Ayanokouji.
"Ayanokouji-kun! Are you thinking about other girls when you have me around?" asked Hoshinomiya-sensei.
"Hmm… how can you prove it?"
"Oh? I guess I was on the mark! Don't underestimate the power of an experienced, mature, and beautiful older woman like me!"
"I wouldn't consider you mature."
"Ouch! That's just rude! You know that I have feelings like everyone else! You're just like Sae-chan… Speaking of Sae-chan, do you think Sae-chan is mature? More mature than me?!"
Hoshinomiya-sensei's question caught Ayanokouji off guard as she quickly changed the topic. Ayanokouji realized that he might end up having a long conversation with Hoshinomiya-sensei and that was the last thing that he wanted.
"I suppose Chabashira-sensei is quite mature." said Ayanokouji.
"Don't let her fool you, Ayanokouji-kun. Sae-chan could be quite childish too." said Hoshinomiya-sensei.
"Like you or worse?"
"You don't have to say it like that! But… Sae-chan could be, you know…"
Hoshinomiya-sensei's expression on her face seemed to be somewhat nostalgic, but Ayanokouji could see some resentment, regret, and disappointment on her face. It was like she was reminiscing on her past, but hated parts of her past as if bitter and painful memories and experiences were a part of her past. A past that she couldn't escape.
Hoshinomya-sensei's POV
Hoshinomiya-sensei's thoughts were thinking about the past, something that she hated to think about as it reminded her of her failures and regrets. It was due to Ayanokouji asking about her and Chabashira-sensei's level of maturity as it reminded her of her past where the relationship and moments between Hoshinomiya-sensei and Chabashira-sensei was much different compared to the present.
'Not right now. I can't be thinking about it right now!' thought Hoshinomiya-sensei.
It was too late as Hoshinomiya-sensei's mind began rescinding about her past. Hoshinomiya-sensei tried to resist it as she didn't want to start thinking about it especially so early in the morning and with Ayanokouji as she was worried that she couldn't control her emotions. It was better when she was alone or really drunk as it provided the perfect cover for her to reminisce about the past and her regrets.
'It all could've been different… I should have, but it wasn't all that bad with Sae-chan…' thought Hoshinomiya-sensei.
With that, Hoshinomiya-sensei's mind slipped into the past as she began thinking about how she and Chabashira-sensei first met as the feelings of nostalgia filled her mind. It was a brief feeling, but it was overwhelmed by feelings of disappointment and resentment.

Author's Note:
Hello, everyone!
Bet you didn't expect a quick update so quick, huh? I've been writing a lot and finished this chapter way ahead of schedule.
I've decided to start revealing some backstories (Manabe, Kei, and Hoshinomiya-sensei), but there are so many more that I have for other characters. However, I decided to wait for a bit before doing it and some of the ones that I added so far are not complete. For example, Manabe's and Kei's are explored more in depth, but it's still not complete. I have future plans on how to complete them. For Hoshinomiya-sensei, some of her backstory will be revealed in the next chapter. I've given enough backstories for this chapter.
I'm a huge fan of backstory and it gives me an opportunity to explore the characters and their past. Maybe it gives us some insight on the characters and what they went through which might explain their thoughts, behavior, and actions in the story. What do you think? But, expect more backstories!
At any rate, I think I might be slowing down on the updates since I have to get more serious about college. The break was fun and much needed, but I need to lock in now.
Until next time, my dear readers.
