Not gonna lie, I'm not sure about this one. Confidence is everywhere but within me -
I hope that with everything I tried, this a good and somewhat unique experience! Even tho I never wrote anything to completion before. Ignoring that English is not my birth language too.
Oh god this is gonna be a trainwreck. Sorry.
At least, don't expect consistent uploads - I'm bad at keeping a schedule.
EDIT (22/06/2024 wow time goes fast when you stop writing) : removed the little exerpt things at the top of every chapters except when they were relevant. Some of them were supposed to be little windows into the future, but I ended up not liking the direction they took; others were fake-outs of alternate dimensions things, but they were irrelevant and unimportant imo.
This is... disconcerting. Even if I decided to discard the sudden "I was there and the next moment I wasn't", I would still need to consider the fact that these buildings are so different from any I've ever seen.
First of all, this massive box like structure. I am pretty sure that, if it were in any of the towns and cities I've visited before, I'd have seen it. Second of all, there was no new cities built lately – and this definitely is a city, seeing how it's so big.
I have to find what happened. I have no money on me, so it would be a good idea to find how to make some – I can't even call my family, because apparently my phone is unable to do anything, besides play some bad offline games. At least I won't get ads. I hope.
Whatever. I guess I'll explore the city, find a map or any kind of opportunity. And if need be, I'll ask to borrow someone's phone and call… Maybe my dad? He should be around. I hope so.
I have to say through, these people sure are colorful. Their clothes are quite strange – not anything I haven't seen, but definitely not something that should be this widely spread out – but, heh, whatever.
So, let's go around exploring this place. With some luck, I'll find a map, or something.
Welp. I'm fucked.
By exploring the city, I discovered several things. First, I probably got Isekai'd. It's... a pretty big stretch there, not gonna lie, but it all sticks together. I think.
For starters, I apparently am in "Leanbox"'s capital. The Southmost country of "Gamindustri". Now, I never was that great at memorizing the names of every nations there was out there in the world. I don't even know half the countries in Europe, apart from a few obvious ones. But I'm pretty sure I'd remember a place called "Gamindustri", if only for the jokes.
Also, I am standing in a place that is apparently called a "Guild", a place where they "manage adventurers that wish to help the nation by killing monsters and retrieving items to complete quests". I throught about it a bit, and ironically, this seems to be my best shot at survival – fighting dangerous creatures for money, that is.
I'll have to find a weapon first, sure, but if I really was sent to another world, and I am standing near a city, then there shouldn't be any really strong monsters around. Which means that there should be a moderate amount of dangers. I hope.
First things first though, I need a weapon. And I need to think a bit for that - I need the best weapon, the one most suited to me and my goals. I'd go for the old-time classic, a big-ass sword, but I'm pretty sure I won't ever be able to do any cool tricks with it. Because, as far as I can see, I am not an anime protagonist. Hell, I don't even think I'm going to be able to lift it.
Maybe something that would allow me to just rush things and overpower them then... A battle axe? No, again, I'm not strong enough to raise something like that in the air. That also rules hammers out, I think.
I could try guns? I can see they have some on display – but unfortunately I've never used one, and you can't just pick one and be a master marksman. I'd also like to avoid being a ranged fighter. Which rules both guns and bows out.
Hand to Hand combat is also out, because of obvious reasons.
So what else is there? I could go for exotic weaponry... Or I could maybe use a lance. Sure, it's not the most impressive weapon, but it'd give me some distance with my opponents – not to much, but enough. Granted, it's heavier than a one-handed sword, but the sword would get me face to face with my opponents.
Now, to get the weapon...
I managed to find a weapons shop. Since I have nothing of value, no money, nothing, I'm gonna have to improvise. By improvise, I mean I'm gonna resort to thievery.
Okay, so that may look bad, but if I manage to survive and I'm not caught I'm gonna buy my future weapons here anyway, so it's just gonna be some sort of loan. And if I die I'll blame the weapon. It's the perfect crime! Ahahahah! I'm so smart. Ahah. Ah.
I want to go home already, and it's been – what, 3 hours? Maybe four or five. The prospect of living life as a Guild Member scares me, but sadly it's the only possibility I see. I'm pretty sure nobody's gonna want to hire someone who doesn't have any credentials. But if I'm offering to risk my life, nobody is going to look to much at it.
Which brings me back to my problem: I need to steal a weapon from a shopkeeper. I have absolutely no thieving skills, and if I'm caught, no credentials to help me – I'm a ghost in the system, and as such I probably have no rights. I am gonna have to plan this really carefully.
Alright, change of plans; I may survive the next few days because I apparently have plot-armor. I believe so at least. It's good to know now, I guess.
Alright so I had this really elaborate (not really) plan to enter, make it looks like I'm interested, but in reality I was watching for cameras and the like, and then I'd leave because 'oops I forgot my wallet silly me' but apparently, they have nothing in there looking for thieves. No cameras, no guards - no nothing. I went in, took the cheapest lance that came by, and left. And there was nothing that tried to stop me.
So I went to the Guild, and I was quite sure they would ask me some proof of my identity if I wanted to join them, but there was no needs – they just asked for my name, took a photo, and gave me a guild card. They also told me how the work at the Guild … Well, works, but I don't really need most of it – I probably won't ever try to become more than a E-rank guild member, let alone one of their best.
They didn't even try to force me to get a teammate – which, now that I think about it, makes sense because you shouldn't be forced to partner up with someone you don't know, when there's a high probably you won't like each others.
There were several persons looking at me too, like they were asking me to join them – Sadly I don't do well in groups, so I didn't even look at them in the eyes. I'm on my own, there.
Yep. It's sure to go well. "Gyone Videsar", untrained loner, with an obviously fake name - unknown to every services in the world, thief and soon-to-be killer. At least, a monster killer.
Anyway, I've taken a simple quest, just to try the mechanics of this world. If I am right and I have been Isekai'd, there should be gimmicks to the combat in this world. Maybe there's stats, maybe it's even so codified that each fight is turn-based – who knows? So I have taken a quest to kill some "dogoos" - they have goo in their name, so they're probably the slimes of this world.
From what I've seen, too, it should take something called "Shares" from something called ASIC and give them to Leanbox. Now, I don't know exactly what they are, but I feel like they are important, so I should watch out for that. Who knows, maybe I need them to get the good ending?
Games references aside, it's time to go and get my ass kicked by canon fodder.
This is more tiring than I expected. I only flailed my lance for a minute or two, and I'm already almost done for. Guess I'll just have to pace myself.
I went to some plains, near the city, because apparently that's were those dogoos appear. I've done some work, and I only need to kill 6 more of these dogoos. They're not strong, they fall pretty quickly under my weapon, but they pack quite a punch – and my ribs can confirm it. I have to dance around them to avoid getting hit.
There doesn't seem to be any kind of game mechanics for the monsters in this world. I don't see levels, the dogoos react in live-action to my hits, some chunks of their bodies are torn off when I land a good hit... No hit points, no armor points, no stats of any kind apparently. I've also watched someone else fight from a distance, and it seems to be the same - I'm not game breaking, the world is just... Surprisingly real.
So far, I only had to deal with one or two Dogoos at the same time, so I'm pretty lucky. But I'm sure there's bigger groups out there – and alone, I'm nothing but prey to these things. And I'd like to be predator, and not… Well dead.
Nice, I set up a Death Flag.
I've seen several other rookies like me, and they all seems to be doing much better than me. Must come from the fact that they were born here, unlike me, and they're adventurers because they want to, not because they need to.
I've observed some of them fight. It's how I discovered that this world had magic (which I wasn't sure before but I now am), as well as skills. I'll have to ask someone how you create skills, because it could be useful in a pinch.
Anyway, my break's over. If I want the money, I need to finish this quest, and – oh, yeah it was a Death Flag.
There are the six dogoos I need to kill. Together. Needless to say, I'm pretty sure I'm doomed.
The first dogoo tries to jump on me, and I hit it with the butt of my lance. It's not enough however, and he gets back up and gets ready to jump on me again.
I only have the time to hit one of them before two other dogoos tries to jump on me. I manage to dodge one, but the other hits me on the shoulder, and I almost let go of my weapon.
I try to counter, but am rapidly overwhelmed, and all I can do is fall back and try to see the situation differently.
Dodging the dogoos' attacks, I run to get some distance between the creatures and I. One of them is dead, two are hurt, the other three are fine – and already trying to close the distance between us.
I hit one of them with the pointy bit of my weapon, and swing it to whack another far away from me - makin him explode on a tree. Sadly I didn't think this through, and the last one take advantage of my lack of control, and headbutts me (do their body counts as one big head or was it a bodyslam?), which makes me drop my weapon.
The monster is standing on the weapon, to make sure I can't grab it, and the others are slowly approaching. Four monsters left; three hurt, one fine.
The healthy dogoo jumps on me, and I drop to the floor, making it so the attack barely avoids me. I then get back on my feet, rush towards my lance, grab it, and try a circular spin to throw the other dogoos as far away as I can. Surprisingly, one of them dies, and the two others seems weak enough that they can't continue their assaults.
Only one dangerous dogoo left. The other twos can't even wobble towards me, let alone attack. I prepare myself, even through I can hardly breathe – this definitely is my last fight for the day. The Dogoo tries once again to headbutts me, but I am ready, and I hold my lance out – and the dogoo impale itself on my weapon, dying without pause.
The last two are quickly disposed of – they can't get up, and definitely can't fight.
I look around me, to see if I am alone, which I thankfully am – and quickly collect the jelly from those disgusting beasts. Funny how something goes from cute to horrible when you have to actively try to kill them if you want to survive, and they fight back.
With my quest done, I head back to the Guild. A day well spent, a job well done – and tonight, I probably won't sleep with an empty stomach.
"Please, enter and tell me what you've got."
"We have a potential candidate. I caught him stealing a weapon from 'Jakob's weapon's emporium', and captured it on my phone."
"I do not see how that makes him a candidate?"
"It's simple - he does not exist. The Guild tried to find some connection, family, a home – he has nothing of the sort. Likewise, I did not find anyone that seemed to know him. For all anyone knows, he does not exist."
"And we now have something to force him to work for us ... If he's found breaking the law, will that mean Leanbox may have problems with the other nations?"
"Absolutely not. No matter how you look at it, nobody would believe him if he said he was coming with orders from us."
"Good enough. Cave, bring him here come tomorrow. It is finally time we started doing something to save Leanbox."
