Waking up for day 2, I checked the time. "7:30 AM? I'M GOING TO BE LATE". So I did something I should never do alone: Stay awake for too long during a school night. I got ready as fast as I could and left the house by 7:45 AM. As I ran to school, I realized that I had forgotten to eat breakfast, but that didn't matter if I made it late, and so I kept running.
Suddenly, not looking where I was going, I bumped into someone by accident. "Ow..." We both said. I got up and apologized. "Oh...sorry".
The person I bumped into was a light-skinned girl who had blue hair with 2 pigtails, with each one having a red bow, green eyes, a yellow uniform with a small red tie, a dark green skirt with small black stripes, and knee-length black socks with black loafers. The girl was pretty angry at me for bumping into her. "Miss...I'm sorry, I was in a hurry to school and I wasn't looking where I was going". I said frantically, as I held my head in pain. I helped her up, and even if she was still mad, she wasn't more mad than when I bumped into her, but she noticed who I was. "Hey, aren't you the new transfer student?"
'Shoot, she knows who I am, but how...'. I think that before I realized she was in the class when I introduced myself. The girl is by the window seat. 'Ohhhhhh'
"HELLO"? The girl yelled.
I shook my head and replied. "Yes, I am."
"Well, then. For someone out of place, you sure are standing out."
I didn't know if it was a compliment or a sort of warning, but I nodded in agreement. "Listen, it's 7:55, and we're running late, so we can talk about this later," I say as I start running again to school and class. After running, I made it in time, but I sprained my leg a bit as I sat down. Mizuka looked at me strangely.
"John, why are you sweating"? She asked
"Well, I woke up late and ran here, then I bumped into one of our classmates". As I said this, the girl I had bumped into earlier came into the classroom and sat at her seat by the window.
"Oh, that is Rumi Nanase...she was a transfer student recently...until you came," Mizuka tells me about her."I wanted to apologize to her, but we were running late to class, so I told her we would talk about this later". I responded. But before I could finish explaining, the teacher came in and got started on his lesson right away.
As the first half of class began, my stomach made growling sounds. I tried to concentrate on the lessons, but the chatter from yesterday began again, and my growling stomach was fueling more bad talk about me. Despite that, the best I could do was ignore the back talk.
As the lunch bell rang, I tried to go to Rumi and apologize for what had happened this morning, but I wasn't able to because of the many male classmates who crowded around her desk to eat lunch with her. I thought to myself about this: 'This is what I sometimes don't like about some boys. Things like falling for girls for how they look instead of who they are as a person. I mean, this is just stupid. A fan club just for one girl who transferred here. ' But at that point, I was starting to sound like I hate Rumi, but I don't want to hate anyone. So I left and looked for Mizuka, who was busy talking to her friends. So, my last choice was to go to the cafeteria.
Once I arrived at the cafeteria, I went to grab some soup and paid for it with the allowance my mom gave me before I left for Japan, and sat down on my own, isolated from other students as I ate the soup on my own. As I ate, I couldn't stop looking at all the groups of friends talking with each other and enjoying the food and each other's company, and the more I looked, the more I felt bad about myself for being a foreigner. "Maybe I won't be able to make friends...I was hoping for a change from back home...but it seems it's still the same". I sighed as I kept eating my soup.
I then heard a trip as soup spilled all over me and got my uniform dirty, and then a thud on the floor. "YEAOOOOOOOOUU," I yelled as the hotness of the soup spilled on my back. I looked to see who had spilled it on me, catching everyone's attention as more chatter about me continued. It was a short girl with short purple hair with spike bangs, a big light blue bow with stripes on the back of her hair, blue eyes, with the usual female uniform for the school. knee covering size white socks, and Mary Jane shoes.
Knowing it was an accident, I helped her up. "Are you okay"? I asked her
She looked distraught as she bowed her head several times. It looked like she was in emotional distress, like she seemed to be on the verge of tears
"It's okay, it was an accident. But are you okay"?
She stops bowing and looks at me for a few seconds, and then nods to say she is okay, calming down but still with a regretful expression. Strangely, she isn't talking, I wonder if she is shy?
"It's alright, okay, I forgive you because it was an accident. So no more feeling bad". I say reassuringly. I then look on the floor and see a green sketchbook with a pencil inside, and I pick it up and give it to the girl. "Here, I think this is yours."
The girl takes the notebook from my hand and bows happily, a sign of thank you. She then takes her sketchbook and opens it to write something. 'Thank you,' She writes
"No problem...But I wanted to ask, if you don't mind me asking it. Can you talk"?
She shakes her head and frowns. She then proves it by opening her mouth wide, as if she were saying 'Ahhhhhh', but when she did, no voice was heard
"Did you lose your voice"? I asked
The girl nods, upset.
"I'm sorry to hear that."
She nods and then smiles again
"My name is John, John Nunez."
She opens her sketch book and writes her name, 'Mio Kouzuki'
Your name is Mio? Nice to meet you, Mio.
She smiles. Then the school bell rings for the second half of class. Mio frowns, wishing for more time to chat with me.
"Well, I have to get back to class. It was nice meeting you, Mio, and have a great day ". I say as I head back to class
Mio waves as she heads back to her class. I arrive back in class to deal with the second half of the class, as it went normally for the first time since I arrived. Mizuka looked at me, seeing my stained clothes, and wondered how I got my clothes wet. I told about a junior spilling her soup on me by accident since she tripped, and I forgave her. Later, after the bell rang, Mizuka said goodbye to me as she stayed in the classroom, talking with some of her friends. Since my clothes were still soggy from the Mio accident, I headed to my locker and took out my sweater from the locker and took off my uniform shirt, put it in my bag, and kept the sweater on until I got home.
When I got home, I showered and put my soggy uniform to dry as I did my homework, talked to my family, and got ready for bed. It was 6 pm, as I lay in bed and thought about Day 2's events.
'Well, Day 2 was another strange day. Running late to school, bumping into someone, who was my classmate and had a fan club, which to me are just people being leeches, and in lunch, I met a junior who couldn't speak but was very expressive, like how is that possible? But I do feel bad for her, so maybe I should be her friend and talk to her more. Mio seems to be nice...but can seem to think the same for Rumi. I wonder what day 3 will bring me'
Tommorrow is another day
