Meanwhile, Luna found herself grappling with her own set of challenges. Though her longing for Kylo was intense, she possessed a strength that allowed her to maintain distance. Unlike Kylo, she did not have the overwhelming connection of a wolf urging her toward him. She was human, and her desire to protect Kylo came from a place of deep love and concern.
Every time she turned off her mind link to him, it felt like a part of her was breaking. She could sense his attempts to reach out, and each time he tried, it pained her deeply. Luna knew she needed to talk to her parents, to find some way to alleviate the pressure on Kylo. It was heart-wrenching to feel his struggle from afar, but she was determined to endure another day at school without him, hoping to find some solace in the routine of her classes.
As Luna prepared for her day, she couldn't shake the worry that had settled in her chest. She needed to be strong, not just for herself but for Kylo. The thought of him suffering was unbearable, yet she knew that staying away was the best way to protect him, for now.
As Luna walked through the school gates, she spotted Cameron and Pearl waiting for her by the entrance. The moment she approached them, their expressions shifted from curiosity to concern. Cameron's eyes softened, and Pearl reached out to give Luna a comforting hug.
"Are you okay?" Pearl asked gently, her voice filled with genuine worry.
Luna tried to muster a reassuring smile, but it faltered. "I'll be fine," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper.
Cameron exchanged a glance with Pearl, his brows furrowed. "We know it's hard," he said softly. "If you're feeling this way, I can only imagine how much worse Kylo must be right now."
Luna's heart ached at the mention of Kylo. She knew Cameron was right; the bond Kylo felt was much stronger and more painful. She nodded, blinking back tears. "I just wish there was something more I could do for him."
Pearl squeezed her hand reassuringly. "You're doing everything you can, Luna. Sometimes the best thing we can do is give those we love the space they need to heal."
"I am not doing this because I want to, I want nothing more than to be with him. I feel like all of this is so unnecessary. I mean I know I messed up that was on me but is hurting him this way really what is best for him? I don't think it is," Luna replied, her voice trembling with emotion.
Cameron and Pearl exchanged another concerned glance. "Luna," Cameron began gently, "this isn't about punishment. It's about giving Kylo the space to process everything, to find his own strength. You need to trust that this distance is helping him, even if it doesn't feel like it right now."
Luna's voice trembled with anguish. "I know and I want nothing more than for him to be able to control his wolf on his own, but like it hurts and I hate it so much. He needs me; I can feel it. I am not certain, but I am not sure he can take much more of this."
Pearl's eyes softened as she held Luna's gaze. "I know it hurts, Luna. But sometimes, pain is part of the healing process. Kylo's journey is his own, and while it's difficult, he needs this time to grow stronger. Trust in his resilience and your bond."
Cameron placed a comforting hand on Luna's shoulder. "Kylo is strong, Luna. He has you, even from a distance. Your love and support are always with him, and that will help him more than you can imagine."
Luna took a deep breath, trying to absorb their words. She knew they were right, but it didn't make the heartache any easier to bear. She nodded slowly, her gaze distant as she whispered, "I hope he finds his strength soon. I miss him so much."
As they walked together into the school, Luna felt a flicker of hope. Perhaps, just perhaps, this separation would build the strength both she and Kylo needed to overcome the challenges ahead.
Of course she had to run into Silas, and he had to say something; he had no idea what was going on though. His carefree grin and the usual mischievous glint in his eyes felt like an intrusion on her sorrow.
Silas leaned against the locker, his carefree grin widening. "Hey Luna, where's your puppy? Making him change too much for him?" he taunted, his voice dripping with mockery.
Luna's eyes flashed with anger and hurt, but she held her ground. "Silas, you have no idea what you're talking about. Just leave me alone," she retorted, her voice steady despite the turmoil she felt inside.
"Or what? You don't have your dog to help you this time, and I'm not afraid of you," he said, his voice cold and challenging.
Cameron stepped forward, his expression firm yet calm. "Back off, Silas," he said, his voice steady and commanding. "This isn't the time for your games. Luna doesn't need this, and neither does Kylo."
Silas raised an eyebrow, sensing an opportunity to provoke further. "What even happened to Kylo? Did he get expelled for changing? Shame on you, Luna!" he teased, his words laced with scorn.
Luna's heart pounded with fury and sorrow. She felt the sting of Silas's words deep within her, but she refused to let him see her crumble.
"Silas, you wouldn't understand even if I explained it to you," she responded, her voice calm but laced with an underlying strength. "Kylo is facing challenges you can't even fathom. So do yourself a favor and walk away."
Silas's grin faltered momentarily, but he quickly recovered, maintaining his cocky demeanor. "Whatever, Luna. Just remember, he's not here anymore. Maybe he couldn't handle it."
Cameron took a step closer, his presence solid and reassuring. "Enough, Silas. I mean it. You don't know what Kylo's going through, and you certainly don't understand what Luna's dealing with. Just back off."
With a final, disdainful look, Silas shrugged and strolled away, leaving Luna and Cameron in the hallway. Luna took a deep breath, grateful for Cameron's support but still aching from Silas's cruel remarks.
"Thanks, Cameron," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I just wish things were different."
"We'll get through this, Luna. Kylo will find his way, and so will you. One step at a time," Cameron said, his tone gentle yet resolute.
As they continued down the hallway, Luna couldn't help but feel a sliver of hope. Despite the pain, despite the challenges, she knew she had to hold on—for Kylo, for herself, and for the future they were fighting for.
School felt like a blur; Luna didn't even remember much after the encounter with Silas. She was numb. She didn't hear someone call out her name until Milly caught up with her.
"Luna, did you not hear me?" Milly asked, slightly out of breath.
"What? No, what do you want?" Luna replied, her voice edged with exhaustion.
"I want to know if Kylo is okay," Milly asked, her concern evident.
"He is fine, and why do you care?" Luna shot back, feeling a pang of defensiveness rise within her.
"Just because I hang out with Silas doesn't mean I am like him. Plus, I think Kylo is cute," Milly said, her tone light but sincere.
For some reason, this upset Luna a lot. Kylo was hers, even if they were just friends. She didn't want him anywhere near Milly. The thought of it made her stomach twist in knots.
"Milly, I—" Luna began, but she couldn't find the words to express how she felt without sounding possessive or irrational.
"Never mind," Luna finally said, shaking her head. "Just stay out of it, okay?"
Milly looked taken aback but nodded slowly. "Alright, Luna. I'll back off. I just wanted to make sure he was okay."
Luna managed a small, tight-lipped smile. "Thanks, Milly. I appreciate it."
As Milly walked away, Luna felt a whirlwind of emotions. She knew she needed to focus on what truly mattered—protecting Kylo and helping him through his struggles, even if it meant facing her own inner turmoil.
Luna made it home and overheard her mom on the phone, talking about Kylo. "Are you sure breaking the bond is the right thing? I feel like it will hurt them in the end," her mom said. Luna couldn't believe what she was hearing—they were going to break the connection she had with Kylo. She knew that would affect him too harshly; she could not let this happen.
Katie hung up the phone and looked at Luna. "Luna, I didn't realize you were home," she said.
"Mom, you can't do this! Please, just let us figure this out. Kylo is already suffering enough. Do we really need to make it worse? Are you not thinking about my feelings in this at all?" Luna's voice trembled with a mix of desperation and anger.
Katie's expression softened as she took a step toward her daughter. "Luna, I understand you're upset, but this is a complicated situation. We're doing what we think is best for both of you."
"Best for us?" Luna scoffed, tears welling up in her eyes. "How is tearing us apart supposed to help anything?"
Katie sighed, reaching out to place a reassuring hand on Luna's shoulder. "Sometimes, the hardest decisions are the right ones. You need to trust that we're looking out for you both."
Luna shook her head, pulling away. "I can't trust that when it feels like you're taking away the one thing that matters most to me." She turned and ran upstairs to her room, slamming the door behind her.
Inside her room, she sank to the floor, feeling utterly helpless. She couldn't let them break the bond, but she didn't know how to stop them either. With a deep breath, Luna resolved to find a way to protect Kylo and their connection, no matter what it took.
Katie knocked on her door. "Luna, we are not doing this to hurt you, or him. We just feel like your connection to him is too strong. His parents are afraid he will lose himself," she said gently.
Luna looked up, her eyes red and puffy. "I know, I get that. Okay, I do, but I will never do that to him. I am meant to protect him, Mom, not destroy his life. Why would the universe fate me to be his guardian if I was going to hurt him in the end? I get it, we are just kids and hardly understand what is going on, but, Mom, I care about him so much. I would never, ever put him in danger or force him to do anything he is not comfortable with. I want him to be human too, and I want him to make his own choices."
Katie opened the door and entered the room, sitting beside Luna on the floor. "Sweetheart, I know how much you care about Kylo. I've seen it in your eyes, in your actions. But sometimes, caring about someone means making difficult choices for their well-being. His parents and I just want what's best for both of you."
Luna's resolve didn't waver. "But how can breaking our bond be what's best? He needs me, Mom. Especially now. If we break the bond, he might lose the support he needs to get through this. Please, just let us figure this out together."
Katie hugged Luna tightly, her voice soft but firm. "I promise you, we'll figure this out. We'll talk to his parents and see if there's another way. We'll find a solution that keeps you both safe and happy."
Luna nodded, feeling a glimmer of hope. "Thank you, Mom. I just want the chance to help him, to be there for him."
Katie kissed the top of Luna's head. "I know you do, sweetheart. I know you do."
Wild finally made it back home, and the first thing he did was head to Chase and Skye's place. He felt like they were struggling and didn't quite understand the bond Kylo had with Luna. Skye had sounded desperate on the phone. He kissed Rory and headed to their house, his mind racing with the uncertainty of the situation.
