Standing on the edge of Kami's Lookout, Andrew felt the cool night air against his skin as he faced Earth's Guardian. Despite months of preparation in the Time Nest, this moment felt surreal—speaking to a character he'd watched on screen for years, now a living being studying him with ancient eyes.
"Supreme Kai of Time?" Kami repeated, his wrinkled green face betraying a hint of confusion. "I know of the Supreme Kais who oversee the universe, but I've never heard of one dedicated to time itself."
Mr. Popo stood silently beside his master, his expression unreadable but watchful.
Andrew straightened his posture, channeling the confidence Vegeta had literally beaten into him during training. "The hierarchy of the cosmos is more complex than even you've been taught, Guardian. Chronoa oversees the flow of time across multiple universes, ensuring stability in the timestream."
Kami's eyes narrowed slightly. "You speak with conviction, young man, but these claims are extraordinary. What proof can you offer of your mission?"
Andrew had anticipated this question during his flight to the Lookout. "Two forms of proof, Guardian. First, I know of events yet to come—tomorrow, a Saiyan named Raditz will arrive on Earth seeking Goku, or as he knows him, Kakarot. He's Goku's brother, and his arrival begins a chain of threats that will test Earth's defenders to their limits."
"Saiyan?" Kami questioned, though something flickered in his eyes—recognition, perhaps even fear. "Goku's brother?"
"Yes. Goku was sent to Earth as an infant from the planet Vegeta before it was destroyed. He's one of the last of his kind." Andrew watched Kami's reaction carefully. "You suspected something wasn't human about him, didn't you?"
The old guardian didn't confirm or deny this, instead asking, "And your second proof?"
Andrew held up his wrist device. "This communicator connected me briefly with Chronoa herself. But more convincingly—" he paused, then pointed to his own chest, "—you can sense ki. Feel my energy signature. It's not from this world, is it?"
Kami closed his eyes, clearly focusing on Andrew's life force. After a long moment, the guardian's eyes opened, widened with surprise.
"Your energy... it has an echo to it. As if it exists partially outside our reality." Kami took a step closer, studying Andrew more intently. "I sense no deception in you, but this is troubling news."
Mr. Popo finally spoke. "Kami, do you believe him?"
The guardian was silent for several moments before responding. "I sense no malice in him, but I remain cautious. If what he says is true, tomorrow will confirm it."
Andrew felt a surge of frustration. "Guardian, we don't have the luxury of waiting until tomorrow. By then, Raditz will have already found Goku at Kame House, kidnapped his son Gohan, and set in motion events that lead to Goku's death."
Kami's grip tightened on his staff. "Goku's death? Impossible. He's the strongest warrior on Earth."
"Not anymore," Andrew said quietly, gesturing to himself. "My power equals Raditz's, and he's stronger than Goku is now. In the timeline I know, it took both Goku and Piccolo working together—and Goku's sacrifice—to defeat him."
The night air seemed to grow colder as Andrew's words hung between them. In the distance, stars twinkled innocently, unaware of the approaching threat hurtling through space toward Earth.
"I understand your skepticism," Andrew continued. "But I—"
Suddenly, Kami's posture stiffened. His eyes widened, staring out into the cosmos as if seeing something beyond mortal perception.
"Kami?" Mr. Popo asked, concern evident in his voice.
"I sense... something," the guardian whispered. "A power... approaching Earth. Violent. Alien." His ancient eyes slowly turned to Andrew, newfound respect and alarm evident. "It feels as you described."
Andrew nodded grimly. "That's Raditz. His pod must have entered the solar system."
"How is this possible?" Kami murmured, more to himself than anyone else. He looked at Andrew with new eyes. "You spoke the truth."
"I've been trying to," Andrew replied, relief washing over him. "Now will you help me?"
The guardian seemed to age before Andrew's eyes, the weight of this revelation settling heavily on his shoulders. "Tell me everything. What happens in this timeline you know?"
Andrew took a deep breath and laid out the sequence of events: Raditz finding Goku at Master Roshi's, the revelation of Goku's alien heritage, Gohan's kidnapping, and the ultimate sacrifice that would send Goku down Snake Way to train with King Kai while Earth's defenders prepared for the arrival of two even more powerful Saiyans.
As he spoke, Kami walked to the edge of the Lookout, gazing down at the Earth below—the planet he'd sworn to protect.
"And you believe you can change these events?" Kami asked when Andrew finished.
"I have to try," Andrew responded. "The timeline I know eventually leads to catastrophic failure—a breakdown in causality itself. That's why Chronoa sent me."
Kami turned back to him. "What is your plan?"
"First, warn Goku before Raditz reaches him. Prepare him mentally for what's coming. Second, ensure Gohan isn't kidnapped—that removes Raditz's leverage. Third..." Andrew hesitated. "This is where it gets complicated. Goku needs the training with King Kai to prepare for the Saiyans who follow Raditz, but in my timeline, he only gets that training because he dies."
Andrew looked up at the starry sky, thinking of the otherworldly teacher waiting at the end of Snake Way. "We need to find a way for Goku to get that training without dying."
Kami had been listening intently, his expression growing increasingly thoughtful. After a long moment of silence, he spoke in a tone that suggested he was choosing his words carefully.
"Perhaps... there is a way."
Andrew's head snapped toward the guardian. "What do you mean?"
"Goku has a... special status in the eyes of the divine hierarchy," Kami said, his voice low as if sharing a secret. "Years ago, when I saw his potential, I registered him as a potential successor to my position."
"What?" Andrew didn't remember this detail from any version of Dragon Ball he knew. "A successor to... you mean as Guardian of Earth?"
Kami nodded. "It is standard practice. I must always have candidates in mind should something happen to me. Goku's pure heart and extraordinary potential made him an ideal candidate, though he has never been informed of this."
Andrew's mind raced with the implications. "And that means...?"
"It means," Kami continued, "that I could potentially take him to Otherworld while he is still alive, as part of his... let's call it 'guardian training.'"
Andrew stared at Kami in disbelief. This was an opportunity he had never imagined—a loophole in the cosmic system that could change everything.
"You could take Goku to train with King Kai without him dying?" Andrew asked, wanting to be absolutely clear.
"I believe so," Kami confirmed. "There are protocols that allow guardians to travel between realms with their students. It is rarely done, but the precedent exists."
A smile spread across Andrew's face as hope surged through him. This was exactly the kind of change he'd hoped to make—finding a better path that didn't require the sacrifices of the original timeline.
"Guardian, this changes everything," Andrew said excitedly. "If Goku can train with King Kai without dying, we can better prepare for the Saiyans' arrival. We can save lives."
Kami raised a hand, tempering Andrew's enthusiasm. "It will not be simple. There are rules, limitations. And most importantly, we must still deal with Raditz first."
Andrew nodded, his mind already shifting to the immediate threat. "Then we need to find Goku now, before dawn. Before Raditz locates him."
"Agreed," Kami said. He turned to his faithful attendant. "Mr. Popo, prepare the flying carpet. We must reach Goku immediately."
"Yes, Kami," Mr. Popo replied with a bow.
As Mr. Popo departed to retrieve the carpet, Kami fixed Andrew with a penetrating gaze. "I am placing my trust in you, visitor from beyond. I hope this trust is not misplaced."
Andrew met the guardian's ancient eyes. "I swore to Chronoa that I would create a better timeline. I intend to keep that promise."
Kami nodded slowly. "Then let us begin."
The pre-dawn sky was still dark when they arrived at Mount Paozu. The small dome-shaped house sat peacefully in a clearing, surrounded by wilderness. Smoke curled lazily from the chimney despite the early hour—Chi-Chi was likely already awake, preparing breakfast for her family.
Andrew hovered in the air beside the magic carpet carrying Kami and Mr. Popo, his heart pounding with anticipation. After all his years as a fan, he was about to meet Son Goku—the hero of his childhood, the character whose journey he'd followed for most of his life.
"We should approach carefully," Kami advised. "Goku's instincts are sharp, even when he appears carefree."
Andrew nodded, understanding completely. They descended slowly to the ground a respectful distance from the house.
As their feet touched the grass, the front door swung open. A figure emerged, spiky-haired and muscular but with a face that somehow maintained childlike innocence despite the power it contained.
Son Goku stood in the doorway, dressed in his orange gi, his expression shifting from surprise to curiosity as he spotted the unusual group approaching his home.
"Kami?" Goku called out, stepping fully outside. "What are you doing here? And who's that with you?"
Andrew froze momentarily, overwhelmed by the surreal experience of hearing Goku's voice in person. It was exactly as he remembered from the show, yet somehow more real, more present.
Goku approached them with his characteristic easy stride, friendly but alert. Up close, Andrew could feel the raw potential in Goku's ki—not yet at the level it would reach, but still impressive.
"Good morning, Goku," Kami greeted formally. "I apologize for the early intrusion, but we come on a matter of great urgency."
Goku scratched the back of his head with that familiar gesture of confusion. "Urgency? What's wrong?"
His eyes shifted to Andrew, clearly assessing the stranger's power level through instinct rather than conscious thought. A slight narrowing of Goku's eyes told Andrew that the Saiyan had sensed his unusual strength.
"You're strong," Goku said bluntly, a hint of excitement creeping into his voice. "Really strong. Who are you?"
Before Andrew could answer, a small figure appeared in the doorway behind Goku—a child no more than four or five years old, dressed in yellow pajamas, his hair wild and uncombed.
"Daddy?" the child asked sleepily. "Who's there?"
Andrew's breath caught in his throat. Gohan. The boy whose kidnapping had set everything in motion in the original timeline. Seeing him now—innocent, untouched by the trauma that would shape him into a warrior—Andrew felt his resolve strengthen.
Not this time, he thought fiercely. This time, things would be different.
"Go back inside, Gohan," Goku said gently. "Tell your mom I'll be back for breakfast soon."
The boy nodded and retreated inside, casting one last curious glance at the visitors.
Goku turned back to them, his expression growing more serious. "So what's this about, Kami?"
The guardian glanced at Andrew, a silent prompt to take the lead.
Andrew took a deep breath, centering himself as Piccolo had taught him. This was the moment he'd prepared for.
"My name is Andrew Slayn," he began. "And I'm here to warn you about your brother, who's coming to Earth to find you."
Goku's expression shifted to complete confusion. "My... brother? I don't have a brother."
"You do," Andrew said firmly. "You're not originally from Earth, Goku. You're a Saiyan, a warrior race from the planet Vegeta. You were sent here as an infant, before your homeworld was destroyed."
Goku stared at him, clearly struggling to process this information. "That's... that's crazy. I'm human! I've always been human!"
"Have you?" Andrew asked gently. "What about your tail, Goku? Humans don't have tails."
Goku's hand instinctively moved to the base of his spine where his tail had once been. "That was just... I was just different."
Kami stepped forward. "Goku, I have sensed the truth in this man's words. Even now, I can feel the presence of another being like you approaching Earth. Violent. Powerful."
"Another... like me?" Goku's brow furrowed.
Andrew nodded. "His name is Raditz. He's your older brother. He's coming to recruit you for... well, essentially to help him conquer planets. And when you refuse—which I know you will—he'll try to take Gohan as leverage."
At the mention of his son, Goku's demeanor changed instantly. The confusion gave way to a protective intensity that Andrew recognized from the series—the look that always preceded Goku's most determined battles.
"No one's touching my son," Goku stated, his voice flat and resolute.
Andrew felt a wave of relief. This was the Goku he knew—the man who, despite his cheerful nature, became utterly serious when his loved ones were threatened.
"That's why we're here," Andrew explained. "To prevent that from happening. In the timeline I come from, Raditz arrives today, finds you at Master Roshi's island, kidnaps Gohan, and forces you to kill a hundred humans to prove your loyalty."
"Timeline you come from?" Goku repeated, confusion returning.
"Goku," Kami interjected. "This man has been sent by a deity even higher than myself—the Supreme Kai of Time. He has knowledge of events that have not yet happened but will if we don't act."
Goku looked back and forth between them, clearly trying to make sense of it all. Then, in classic Goku fashion, he seemed to mentally set aside the complicated parts to focus on the essential.
"So my brother is coming to Earth today, and he wants to hurt my family." It wasn't a question.
"Yes," Andrew confirmed.
"Then I'll stop him," Goku said, as if it were the simplest thing in the world.
Andrew shook his head. "It's not that simple. He's stronger than you are right now, Goku. In my timeline, it took both you and Piccolo working together to defeat him, and even then..." He hesitated.
"Even then what?" Goku pressed.
"Even then, you died in the process," Andrew finished quietly.
A silence fell over the group as Goku absorbed this information. To Andrew's surprise, Goku didn't seem particularly disturbed by the news of his potential death.
"I see," Goku said thoughtfully. "So he's that strong, huh?" There was a hint of excitement in his voice that Andrew recognized all too well—the Saiyan's natural response to the prospect of a challenging opponent.
"Yes, but we can change that outcome," Andrew said quickly. "That's why I'm here. In my timeline, you, Piccolo, and Gohan become Earth's greatest defenders, but at a terrible cost. I'm here to help create a path with fewer sacrifices."
Goku studied Andrew's face intently, as if trying to peer into his soul. "You really believe all this, don't you?"
"I know it," Andrew replied. "Just as I know that the weighted clothing under your gi was designed by Kami, that you once rode the Nimbus cloud, that your power pole was given to you by your grandfather Gohan, and that you defeated King Piccolo by punching through his chest."
Goku's eyes widened at these personal details. "How could you know all that?"
"Because where I come from, your story is legendary," Andrew said simply. It wasn't the whole truth, but it was close enough.
Goku fell silent, processing everything. Then he looked at Kami. "You believe him?"
The guardian nodded solemnly. "I do. And there's more, Goku. If we succeed in dealing with Raditz, there will be other, stronger Saiyans coming. You will need training beyond what Earth can provide."
"What kind of training?" Goku asked, interest piqued.
"Training with King Kai," Andrew answered. "The overseer of this quadrant of the galaxy. In my timeline, you receive this training after death, traveling Snake Way in Otherworld. But Kami believes there may be another way."
Kami stepped forward. "Years ago, I registered you as a potential successor to my position as Guardian, Goku. It was merely a formality at the time, but it gives me the authority to take you to Otherworld while you're still alive, as part of your... training."
Goku blinked. "You... want me to be the next Kami?"
"Not necessarily," Kami clarified. "But the designation allows certain privileges. It could give you access to King Kai's training without the need for... death."
Andrew watched as Goku processed this, seeing the wheels turning behind those innocent eyes that somehow always understood more than people gave him credit for.
"So let me get this straight," Goku said, counting on his fingers. "My Saiyan brother is coming to Earth today. He wants me to join him in conquering planets. If I say no, he'll try to take Gohan. He's stronger than me, but with help, we might beat him. And after that, I need special training for even stronger guys coming later."
"That's... a remarkably accurate summary," Andrew said, impressed as always by Goku's ability to cut to the essence of a situation.
Goku crossed his arms, his expression serious for a moment before breaking into that characteristic wide grin. "Well, I don't know about all this Saiyan stuff, but if someone's threatening my family, I'll stop them. And if I need to get stronger to protect Earth, I'll do that too."
Andrew felt a profound sense of relief. This was the Goku he had admired for so many years—straightforward, determined, and fundamentally good.
"There's one more thing," Andrew added. "In my timeline, you team up with Piccolo to defeat Raditz. We should find him too."
At the mention of Piccolo, Goku's expression grew thoughtful. "Piccolo, huh? We haven't exactly been friends since the tournament."
"True, but he has as much interest in keeping Earth safe as you do, even if his reasons are different," Andrew pointed out.
Goku nodded slowly. "Alright. So what's the plan?"
Before Andrew could answer, his wrist device beeped loudly. He glanced down at it, his blood turning cold as he read the display.
「ALERT: INCOMING POD DETECTED」 「ESTIMATED ARRIVAL: 45 MINUTES」 「PROJECTED LANDING SITE: EAST FARMLAND REGION」
"Change of plans," Andrew said grimly. "Raditz is arriving sooner than expected. We don't have time to find Piccolo."
Kami closed his eyes, concentrating. "I sense it too. The power is approaching rapidly."
Goku looked between them, his expression hardening into determination. "Then we face him directly. Chi-Chi and Gohan will stay here, safe."
Andrew shook his head. "No, Raditz will be able to track your energy signature with his scouter—a device that reads power levels. If we leave your family here, he'll find them once he realizes you're not cooperating."
"Then what do we do?" Goku demanded.
Andrew thought quickly, weighing options against his knowledge of coming events. "We need to get Chi-Chi and Gohan to safety first. Kame House is too obvious—that's where he finds you in my timeline. But the Lookout... Raditz wouldn't know to look there, and it's defensible."
Kami nodded in agreement. "Mr. Popo can take them there immediately."
"After that," Andrew continued, "we intercept Raditz at his landing site. You, me, and hopefully Piccolo if we can contact him quickly. We take Raditz by surprise, three-on-one, before he can execute his original plan."
Goku's expression was solemn as he absorbed the strategy. After a moment, he nodded. "Let me tell Chi-Chi and Gohan. She won't like this, but..." He trailed off, clearly concerned for his family's safety.
"Go," Andrew encouraged. "But hurry. We don't have much time."
As Goku turned toward the house, Andrew called after him. "And Goku? Don't mention anything about your Saiyan heritage to Gohan yet. That's a conversation for another day."
Goku paused, looking back with an uncharacteristically serious expression. "I don't even know if I believe it myself yet." Then he disappeared into the house.
Andrew turned to Kami, anxiety and excitement warring within him. "This is already different from my timeline. We're changing things."
The guardian studied him with ancient eyes. "Let us hope we're changing them for the better."
"That's why I'm here," Andrew said with determination. "To make sure of it."
Inside the Son household, they could hear Chi-Chi's voice rising in protest, questions and concerns flowing rapidly. A few minutes later, Goku emerged with Chi-Chi and Gohan, the former looking deeply unhappy but resolute, the latter sleepy and confused.
"Mr. Popo will take you somewhere safe," Goku was explaining to Chi-Chi. "I promise I'll explain everything when I get back."
Chi-Chi looked at the assembled group with suspicion, her protective instincts clearly on high alert. "This better not be some excuse for you to go off fighting again, Goku."
Andrew stepped forward, bowing respectfully to Chi-Chi. "Ma'am, I assure you, this is about keeping your family safe. There's a threat coming to Earth that specifically targets your husband and son."
Chi-Chi's expression shifted from annoyance to concern. "Targets Gohan? Why would anyone target my baby?"
"To get to Goku," Andrew explained gently. "Your husband is Earth's greatest defender, and his enemies know that his family is his greatest weakness."
Chi-Chi looked to Goku, who nodded grimly. She seemed to deflate slightly, her anger giving way to worry. "Just... come back safe. Both of you."
"I will," Goku promised, hugging his wife and son tightly.
Mr. Popo stepped forward with his flying carpet. "We should depart, Mrs. Son. The Lookout is quite safe, I assure you."
As Chi-Chi and Gohan settled onto the carpet, the young boy looked back at his father with wide, innocent eyes. "Are you going to fight the bad guys, Daddy?"
Goku smiled, trying to reassure his son. "That's right, Gohan. Daddy's going to make sure the bad guys don't bother us anymore."
Mr. Popo's carpet rose into the air, Chi-Chi clutching Gohan protectively. "We'll be waiting," she called down, her worry evident despite her attempt at strength.
As the carpet disappeared into the distance, Goku's expression transformed from the loving father to the determined warrior. He turned to Andrew, his eyes sharp. "Now what?"
Andrew checked his device again. "Raditz lands in less than forty minutes. We need to find Piccolo quickly if he's going to help."
"I can locate him," Kami said. "As his other half, I always know where he is." The guardian closed his eyes, concentrating. "He's meditating near the wastelands, not far from where this Saiyan pod will land."
"Perfect," Andrew said. "We'll head there, try to convince Piccolo to join us, and intercept Raditz together."
Goku nodded, stretching his muscles in preparation. "Let's go."
As they prepared to depart, Andrew felt the weight of the moment. His first major intervention in the timeline was underway, with consequences that would ripple outward through all future events.
He'd warned Goku, secured his family's safety, and now they were heading to confront Raditz with preparation and strategy rather than shock and confusion. Already, things were unfolding differently from the original timeline.
Andrew launched into the air alongside Goku, with Kami using his own abilities to keep pace. As they raced toward the coming confrontation, one thought circled in Andrew's mind:
This time, no one has to die.
