Chapter 23: Date with Riko

Day 26 (Saturday - April 11th)

Following Riko's sudden request, the remainder of the duo's night had been awkward more than anything. Mainly on You's side but it was understandable.

You, arguably his future lover who he was intimate with to a degree, was not yet his officially. Meaning he was single and therefore still available to any that sought him out. What caused likely an unsavory taste to lay in You's mouth, something he could nearly taste given the situation, was that a close friend in their school group had blatantly asked him out on a date.

No sane person could deny that it was anything but that. Riko had asked him to hang out for the following day. Alone. Nearly everyone that they knew at school were aware of the closeness Relon had with You. Everyone knew they were childhood friends and some had already teased at them being an item. Not that they were exactly wrong.

He'd take countless bullets for her. If he had to choose the sake of the world or her, he'd likely go with her because she was his world. He'd treasure her until the end of time even after death. You Watanabe was the woman he seeked first and foremost before anyone or anything else. Their relationship had bloomed over his time here in Japan and it showed.

You was his partner.

Because of that title alone, this awkward space between them was occurring. As agreed, they would act closer than normal. In a way that they were on the cusp of being an official couple. Yet others could still pursue him despite her open dislike of said action.

In the end, it was his choice whether to go along should such a thing happen. Thus here he was dealing with said dilemma he hadn't planned to actually happen.

Looking at the empty space on his bed, he found it odd. You had only slept with him once thus far and already not seeing her next to him felt… off. He didn't like it.

So many thoughts ran through his head at once that he didn't know which to properly acknowledge first. Though the clear one that permeated first above all else was in regards to You. All morning since waking up, she hasn't avoided him but she hadn't talked properly to him either.

Hell, he just didn't know what to say past the simple "good morning."

So here he was, dressed in his casual red and black attire pondering his love life.

He hadn't realized that Riko would take interest in him. Perhaps, he was too blinded by the love of his life and his other no-so-positive recent events that he hadn't noticed. Riko was a beauty. God, it was so insane how beautiful she was.

Her elegance seemed to rival You's own goddessness, if that was even a word.

Still, he didn't know what she saw in him if anything. Perhaps she just wanted to hang out, chat about school or their own personal lives since she didn't really communicate with anyone else outside of their small class group.

He sighed.

Nothing was going to get done if he didn't act.

His love for You, his friendship with Hanamaru, and now his relationship with Riko were all caused by his advancement in furthering those bonds. If he wanted to preserve that which he cherished, he knew that deep down he needed to act.

Once more he sighed, this one in resignation of the possible headache that would somehow return. With a slap of his cheeks, he shot up. The crazy idea he's kept in the back of his head was coming up a lot sooner than he liked.

"Okay," he breathed out, eyes set on his next course of action. Without delay, he looked at his phone.

He hadn't opened the message so although Riko's own device would tell her that her message was sent, it wouldn't be shown as read.

Placing it away, not yet opening Riko's message with a few hours before he'd have to meet her, he stepped out into the hall. Mom was away yet again, that busybody. Across from his door, he could hear the faint sounds of light music and movement emanate from You's door.

Knock knock knock.

This would be either an awkward talk that they'd laugh off as silly or he was about to have another deep moment with her. Possibly both.

"You? Can we talk?" As soon as he spoke, the movement halted and the music quickly lowered.

Then the door opened slowly. Sure enough, the pursed look on her meek face told all that needed to be said. Then she also sighed, lightly banging her head against the door frame.

"I feel stupid."

"So we're still cool at least?" He asked, worry evident in his tone and expression as she nodded, extending her hand to pull him inside.

He was relieved more than anything. They didn't have to fret or discuss issues in long detail. Just some time apart to think was all they seemed to need.

Along he went in the room, guided as she cutely pushed him to sit atop her bed. Without hesitation, she took her place atop her new throne.

"Better?" He asked with a smile as she rested her head atop his.

"A bit. Still miffed at the whole situation, even if I agreed to it."

"You know I can still say no."

"I do but… It wouldn't be fair."

"What do you mean?"

"The whole point of me being your 'partner' is because we're not dating. Not until, well, you know. If another girl, no matter who it is, likes you, I have no right to tell you who you can and can't hang out with."

Despite the storm of thoughts that had plagued his mind last night and this morning, he was somewhat speechless at the logic his future lover produced. All this time he had only thought of things from his perspective and somewhat hers but no way did he think about accounting her own status as his partner.

"Huh… I didn't think of that. God, that's another layer of thinking I'll have to add."

"Silly, it's a thoughtful sentiment but don't mush your brain over unnecessary stuff," she chided, flicking his nose lightly.

"But it's you so…" He shrugged indifferently.

"It's worth it?" She smirked to get a childish nod. "Jeez," she pressed her lips against his cheek once more, this kiss lasting far longer before ending with a pop. "Go on your date with Riko-chan."

Blinking, slightly dazed from the act, he shivers to feel his groin stir awake.

"Are… you sure?"

Smiling lasciviously, her lips leaned in to feint past his cheek. Then he felt the cool breath of her mouth blow against his ear. Immediately his body tensed to further stiffen as her soft lips trailed along his earlobe.

"Mhm~."

"H-Hey!" He stammered, not fighting back as his hand clenched from the small nibble she inflicted upon his ear. "S-Sending mixed signals, you know." He was already getting hard and the uncomfort from her nice ass on his membrane was growing by the second.

"Sorry," she said, relinquishing her grasp. "I'm just making up for earlier. Want me to stop?" She blinked expectantly.

"What you're doing is unfair and you know it," he deadpanned through his flushed face. "You just turned me on out of nowhere and you're just gonna stop?"

"Well, what would you like for me to do?"

His "little him" was pressing against her butt and he knew she felt him. To just be affectionate out of nowhere was not a bad thing per say but in this moment, turning him on was something she shouldn't have done.

Perhaps it was the realization of the mistake she made. Because the slightly nervous look she wore was well warranted as she squealed from the sudden motion of her body falling. Now he laid overtop of her, smirking at his handiwork as her adorable blush lied present before him.

"Answer a question, actually."

Sakurauchi Residence

Riko Sakurauchi hadn't expected a positive answer when she sent that text last night to Relon.

Her heart had been aflutter since their departure from study hall. She had mustered the courage to obtain his number and she was successful in doing so. It came as a big surprise when Relon had confessed to wanting hers but being nervous.

With how blunt he was in nature, at least when around her, seeing that shy side of his tugged at her heart strings. She found the realization and sight alone to be… cute. Really cute. It was just a sight hard to describe in words.

The usual calm and stoic Relon clearly held a genuine and compassionate side. The compliment about wanting to cherish her and the others on their way to school spoke volumes on the kind of person he was. It was at that moment that she possibly began to see him differently.

Throughout the day following his departure, her mind couldn't stray from the thought of Relon. His character, how kind he was, how nice it was to share a space with him. She couldn't help but feel like some maiden stricken with the affliction of love. It was then that she had paused mid-step as students walked past her.

Love?

No, that surely wasn't the case. She had easily dismissed that notion altogether without a second thought. She liked him, that much was certain. Yet, now she could not rid the male from her mind. Not that she was actually trying. For once, her mind hadn't been on piano work or school or even books. Just the boy she liked.

It seemed so normal yet she wasn't at all accustomed to such a thing.

Here she was in the prime of her adolescence and she was feeling actual enjoyment from it. Something that no book or recital had made her feel so genuinely. That was what made her mood lift higher by the second.

All the way home, she simply thought upon the wondrous memory that was her time with Relon during study hall. The look on his face, the words laced with endearment spoken from the boy; she simply looped it over with a giddy smile. All the while looking at the new contact she listed in her favorites.

Kami, she was so head over heels and she felt like some protagonist in a novel or some fanfic. And she loved it. The feeling of adoration towards the male made her squeal into the confines of her pillow as she plopped atop her bed by the time she finally reached home. She just tossed and turned until she had finally rid the last of her jovialness from her body.

They had things in common that she didn't expect, yet he was quick to capture it. In a sense, he had his attention on her. That prospect alone made her lips arch into a smile once more.

Then they drooped as a sigh came.

All day her mind had avoided any mention of You Watanabe.

You was her friend. Like Chika, You had the energy and positivity to overcome seemingly anything. With Relon at her side, the two's own chemistry was something else. They easily were best friends if they could unconsciously finish the other's sentence without trying.

But she clearly held feelings for him. The blushing mess she was when the others teased told Riko that much. That and the countless tales she'd bring up with Relon involved told that both were vital in the other's life.

So where did she stand in comparison to the gem that You was towards Relon? If You was a glimmering diamond, then Riko had to guess that she was a shiny pearl. Only noticeable at best, not valued.

At least, not yet.

Once more, her eyes had gazed upon her phone. She cared for You as a friend. She really did. Perhaps it was cruel but they all could dance around this topic for so long. Before that happened, she wanted- no. She needed to know for certain.

Would this blossoming feeling of appeal toward Relon be a simple roadblock unavoidable? A lesson for her to learn as he swooped You off her feet sementing their bond as significant others? Or… could there be a chance for her after all?

It made her feel ill, as though she was betraying a friend. I seemed that way to her. But there was no way to flat out ask without responsive questions from either Relon or You arising.

She wanted to experience all that she could before that ill future would occur. She wanted to know how Relon truly felt within their short time of knowing each other.

Without thinking, she hit send. Then her body trembled, as if recoiling from the sinful act she had just committed. The only verbal mention of Relon was when they first met in class in regards to him being single. No one had spoken of no one going after him, pursuing him in their own interest. The other girls jokingly brought it up and You could only either become flustered or sigh at their antics.

If You was Relon's sun that he revolved around, then perhaps Riko was the moon with how her mind had recently revolved around Relon.

Now she just had to wait and see what Relon would say. Given he and You were living together, if not practically a couple already, then he'd likely decline and she would just have to accept things as they are. In a way, his answer would be either the acceptance at her having a chance or the foot that'd stomp her down and halt any further advancement on her road of affection.

If he said no, they'd just return to their normal talks at school, maybe even have some book reading together. If he said yes, then they'd have the day together… alone.

And a whole new level of fright settled in.

If, and she meant if, he for some inexplicable reason said yes then they'd be together in the city without anyone else. It'd basically- no. No, no, no! It would be a date!

How could she be so blind?! She asked Relon out on a date without realizing it! If You saw that, how would she even react?! What would happen if he actually said yes? Would it be to politely decline her possible advances or for some other reason yet?!

Her mind had become a muddled mess by this point and all she could do was force herself to sleep off the endless stream of thoughts that plagued her mind. Before she knew it, it was morning. In that brief moment, her mind dazed and still stirring had somehow forgotten the mental mess that was yesterday.

As if on cue, her phone chimed. Dumbly, she looked at it. Struggling to comprehend, she adjusted her mind to awaken a bit faster. Then she tried again. And again. And… again. She was no longer having difficulties reading it. She simply was in disbelief at what the message said.

Relon: Mornin'. Sorry for the late response, Sakurauchi-san. Ya know, it's usually the guy that asks the girl on a date but I'm not complaining lol. I'm more than game for spending the day with you. Want me to meet you at your place? Sorry if that's too forward, I was raised old school so anywhere works for a meeting spot XD.

The loud scream in exclamation that followed was well warranted. All she could do was frantically move around her room conjuring an outfit appropriate for the sudden occasion. Of course, when her mother came in, she immediately understood the assignment at hand.

Thus, here Riko was attempting to calm her beating heart. All her supportive mother could give following her departure was some kind words and a thumbs up.

"If only that was enough," she sighed, fiddling with her now wavy hair.

To save herself and her mother the trouble of cleaning the near mountain-sized piles of outfits all over the place, her mother had opted for a rather more simple attire over anything fancy. Given this was Riko's first ever date, the guidance of her mother was well appreciated.

The outfit conjured by the genius tactician that was her mother was something Riko herself found rather charming while remaining comfortable. She wore a simple pastel pink dress with laces around her chest with a small blue jacket with frills at the seams overtop. With a simple three-pearled bracelet, she had her usual hair clip swapped for a gold triangular one and small heels.

Then the sounds of footsteps emerged. One look and the nervous feeling in her pit was nearly drowned out by a fluttering sensation that filled her core. Casually walking her way, greeting with that relaxed smile she's seen time and time.

As he approached, she caught the subtle hint of his eyes gloss over her being. Then they widened ever so slightly.

Was he checking her out? She began to fidget and check over herself. She's never been looked at like this before. She could feel her cheeks heat from the act.

One subtle glance back and she caught it. His own cheeks were a tint deeper as his gaze averted.

"Uh, morning," he greeted, awkwardly looking forward once more.

"M-Morning," she managed, mentally reprimanding herself for the stutter. "How… are you this morning?"

"Honestly? Kinda nervous, haha," he managed, easing himself as she too began to let her own nerves subside.

Was he not used to dates? Had he not done so with You before? Perhaps it was because they were childhood friends that going on outings with her didn't bother him. In that case…

"Same," she confessed through a chuckle. "I've… never done this before so I'm somewhat nervous I'll admit. I actually needed some help putting this outfit together," she emphasized, inspecting herself. "How… do I look?"

It took what courage she had to ask that question. Judging by the redness deepening, she had to assume he liked it. At least, she wanted to.

"You look beautiful. Really beautiful," he breathed, seeming exasperated by the statement alone. "I love what you did with your hair by the way. Adds a hint of more elegance if I had to say."

Ba-dump.

Her eyes widened, the corners of her lips curving upwards as she failed at hiding the happy smile she now wore.

"I'm relieved! Shall we get going?"

"Yeah. We've got daylight to burn so let's hit the town, Sakurauchi-san!"

Taking his side, she gave one last glance at the home catching her mother from the second floor giving a thumbs up. Winking, they departed towards the city.

The morning was going strong. She had to keep up this momentum!
