Chapter 9.
Link had been completely absorbed in watching the match unfold. Samus, without her iconic armor, was battling fiercely against Fox, Solid Snake, and Sheik in a fast-paced, high-energy bout. It was a match that displayed incredible agility from all sides. Fox and Samus, both relying on advanced technological weaponry, made the fight feel like a futuristic showdown, while Sheik moved with the grace of a ninja, his swift but deadly attacks surprising his opponents. Snake, on the other hand, was more methodical, slower but calculating, utilizing explosives and strategic positioning to even the odds.
The fight had been balanced, each participant giving their all. When Sheik was knocked out by a well-placed blow from Samus, the match had turned into an intense free-for-all. Then Snake cleverly eliminated Fox by detonating an explosive just as he was about to recover. Now, it was just Samus and Snake—two elite warriors going head-to-head in the final moments of the fight.
Samus didn't need protection, she was more than capable of handling herself. But ever since they had grown closer, Link couldn't shake off the instinct to worry about her. He knew these fights were all in good fun, no one really got hurt, but seeing her take hard hits, even in a controlled environment, always stirred his protective side.
Link found himself increasingly absorbed by the sight of Samus in action. Her movements were quick, precise, and graceful—she was a master of her craft. But something else caught his attention. Samus, in her Zero Suit, moved with such agility and confidence that it made Link's thoughts drift into unfamiliar territory. He admired her skill, yes, but there was something about the way she looked today that distracted him, stirring something inside him he wasn't used to feeling. He mentally chastised himself for letting his thoughts wander, for allowing himself to see her in a way that felt inappropriate.
Just as he was caught in these thoughts, the loud voice of the announcer pulled him back to reality.
"The winner is Samus!" boomed the voice.
Link immediately snapped out of his reverie, a sense of relief washing over him. Without wasting another moment, he stood from the stadium seats and made his way to find her. There was something he needed to say—maybe about the match, maybe about something else entirely—but he knew he had to be near her now. Whether it was to congratulate her or just to be by her side, Link couldn't quite tell, but the feeling of needing to be close to Samus pushed him forward.
As Samus approached Link after the match, she wiped a bit of sweat from her brow, her usual confident smile on display.
"How was the fight? Was it good?" she asked, genuinely curious as she caught her breath.
"It was very good," Link replied, a hint of admiration in his voice. "I'm glad you won."
Samus nodded, pleased with the praise. "Thanks. So, what do you think about heading to the other stadium? I heard your 'enemy' Ganondorf is over there," she added with a teasing smile.
Link shook his head, his usual resolve wavering. "I don't have the energy for that," he said, his tone lacking its usual fire when it came to Ganondorf.
Samus studied him for a second, then gave a small nod of understanding. "Okay, I get it. How about you teach me how to properly use that Sheikah stone of yours then?" she suggested, her tone light and encouraging.
Link perked up slightly at the idea. "Yeah, okay," he agreed, already thinking about how to show her.
"But," Samus interjected with a playful grin, "this time let's go somewhere else. I'd rather not have to clean up your mess again," she said, recalling the last incident when his Sheikah stone had unintentionally caused a bit of chaos in her room.
Link chuckled, a little embarrassed but also relieved that Samus didn't seem to hold it against him. "Fair enough," he said, scratching the back of his head with a sheepish smile.
As they started walking to a more open area, Link began to explain the basics of the Sheikah stone. He couldn't help but feel grateful for how easy it was to be around Samus, even when things went wrong. The more time he spent with her, the more comfortable he felt.
As time passed, Link continued to show Samus more of the features that his Sheikah artifact had. Inevitably, they caused a bit of chaos as it was Samus's first time using it, but both of them were grateful that almost everyone else was distracted by Ganondorf's fight and didn't notice the minor disasters they created.
Now back in Samus's room, Link was sitting at her computer, learning something new with every keystroke.
"Hahaha, if anyone had seen the mess I made, I'd feel so embarrassed," Samus laughed, her lighthearted tone making the whole situation seem even funnier in hindsight.
"Yeah, imagine that—Samus, the fearless, serious bounty hunter, having fun like a kid," Link teased, doing his best to sound serious, though it was clear he was holding back a laugh.
"It would ruin my entire reputation," Samus joked back, still chuckling.
After a moment, Link glanced at her curiously. "Hey, what are you doing? You've been looking around for something for a while now."
Samus kept her back turned, still rummaging through her belongings. "I'm searching for something I want to give you," she explained, focused on the task at hand.
Link, however, couldn't help but be drawn to the sight of her—every movement she made, the way she crouched down or reached on her toes to check higher shelves. He had always admired tall women, finding them graceful and striking. Samus was no exception. Her athletic build, her beautifully structured face, and the casual elegance of her ponytail—Link found it all very mesmerizing, though he quickly tried to shake off those thoughts.
Finally, after a few more moments of searching, Samus noticed Link glancing her way. She raised an eyebrow, finding it a little odd, but just as she did, she stumbled upon what she'd been looking for.
As Samus stood up and approached Link, she held out a small object, her eyes gleaming with satisfaction. "I found it," she said triumphantly, offering it to him.
Link, both curious and surprised, gently took the object from her hand. It was a sleek, compact device that fit neatly in his palm. It emitted a faint glow, with intricate symbols and markings on its surface—nothing like anything he'd ever seen before.
"What's this?" Link asked, tilting his head as he examined it more closely.
Samus smiled, leaning against her desk with her arms crossed. "It's a personal scanner. I used it on missions all the time. It can detect hidden objects, life forms, and even enemies from a distance. You can scan through walls or obstacles—it's extremely useful."
Link's eyes widened in awe as he turned the scanner over in his hands. The device's sophisticated design was fascinating to him. "Wow, this is incredible... but why are you giving it to me?"
Samus's grin widened. "You've shown me how useful your Sheikah stone is. I figured it's only fair to share something from my world in return. Plus, I think this will come in handy for you down the line."
Link was genuinely moved by her gesture. "Thank you, Samus," he said sincerely, appreciating the trust she had in him.
"Don't mention it," she replied, her tone softening a little. "Just... try not to cause any more chaos with it, alright?"
Link chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. "I'll try my best."
Link examined the artifact intently, its surface gleaming under the room's light.
"If you were really interested in helping me, you would have gotten up," Samus remarked, her tone serious but playful.
"Wha—?" Link stammered, caught off guard.
"I noticed you staring at me instead of helping," Samus continued, a questioning look on her face.
"Well, I wanted to help! That's why I was watching the entire room so carefully," Link replied, his voice tinged with nervousness.
"The whole room? How strange… That's not the impression I got," Samus teased.
Link hesitated, searching for the right words. "Well, the thing is—" he began, but Samus interrupted.
"You're a terrible liar," she said, a playful smile dancing on her lips.
Link's cheeks flushed crimson as he fidgeted in place, feeling exposed.
"What's wrong? Are you okay?" Samus asked, a hint of mischief in her voice.
She took a seat beside him on the bed, her demeanor softening. "Tell me what's bothering you," she said gently.
Link struggled to find his voice, feeling caught in the act of being a voyeur. He was acutely aware of Samus's gaze upon him. She had noticed his lingering stares earlier that day and felt it was time to explore the tension that had built between them. She relished the playful dynamic they shared and loved the way Link's anxiousness heightened the atmosphere.
"What's the matter, Link? Don't you want to talk? There's something troubling you," she pressed, her voice soothing.
"Sa-sa-Samus… I…" Link stammered, words escaping him.
"What happened? Don't be afraid, I don't bite," Samus said, her smile warm and inviting.
Their eyes locked—Samus calm and collected, while Link felt like he might burst from the pressure of the moment. I have to kiss him, Samus thought, feeling an irresistible urge pulling her closer.
With determination, she leaned in, her face mere centimeters from his, ready to bridge the gap between them. But just then, a loud knock at the door shattered the tension, causing her excitement to dissipate in an instant. Her mood shifted, frustration bubbling beneath the surface.
With a sigh, she stood up, preparing to confront the intruder.
"Hello, Miss Samus!" greeted Mario, the plumber, with a cheerful smile.
"Hello, Mr. Mario. How can I help you?" Samus replied, forcing a smile as she masked her irritation.
"You were the only one not at the stadium, so I came to invite you to a small party in the event hall. It's a gala, so you'll need to dress elegantly," Mario said, handing her a piece of paper.
"Thank you," Samus replied, her smile still forced as she closed the door behind him, her moment with Link momentarily interrupted.
Link was still seated on the bed, frozen, trying to process what had just happened. He was both relieved and disappointed by Mario's unexpected interruption. Samus, however, was visibly frustrated, her usual composed demeanor replaced by an unmistakable irritation. She turned around, leaning against the door, letting out a deep sigh.
"I swear, if it wasn't Mario, I might have lost my temper," she muttered, her eyes narrowing in frustration. The tension in the room was still palpable, but it had shifted from something intimate to something awkwardly unresolved.
Link finally found his voice, still a bit flustered. "Samus, I... I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable."
Samus raised an eyebrow and walked back toward him, her serious expression softening. "Uncomfortable?" she asked, almost amused. "You're the one who looked like you were about to faint."
Link couldn't help but laugh nervously. "Yeah... I guess I was a little out of it."
She sat back down beside him, this time closer. "Look, I noticed how you were looking at me earlier. And, honestly... it wasn't a bad thing." Her voice was softer now, and her smile returned, more genuine this time.
Link turned even redder but managed to speak more coherently. "I didn't mean anything by it. You just... looked really beautiful, and I got distracted. I'm sorry if—"
Samus cut him off, placing a hand on his shoulder. "Link, relax. I'm not upset. I just... wanted to understand where your head was at."
Link looked at her, and their eyes locked for a moment. The awkward tension from before was replaced with something more familiar, more comfortable. He could see now that Samus wasn't teasing him just for fun—there was something deeper behind her actions, something mutual.
"I guess my head's been a little... all over the place," Link admitted, his voice quiet.
Samus gave him a knowing smile. "I can tell."
Just as the atmosphere was beginning to shift again, Samus held up the invitation Mario had handed her. "A gala party, huh?" she said with a mock sigh. "I'm not really one for fancy events, but... maybe we can both go and have some fun."
Link blinked, still adjusting to the sudden change of subject. "You want me to go with you?"
"Of course," Samus replied, her playful grin returning. "It'll be a nice way to unwind after all the chaos we've been causing."
Link smiled, the tension melting away as they shared the moment. "Alright. Just... no Sheikah stone disasters at the party."
Samus laughed. "Deal."
