The air left the room as soon as they announced the presidency.

It didn't matter that the bullpen was full of people trained to remain impartial. Every screen flashed the same result, and every conversation halted mid-sentence. Bonnie stood frozen, wide eyes staring at the screen while Damon sat two desks down, jaw slack, coffee forgotten.

She had seen the numbers creeping toward the outcome for days, but this was official. Seeing that name in bold, flashing across the screen, she knew it hit Damon like a gut punch.

Breaking: David Taylor wins presidency in historic upset.

The silence hung for what felt like forever and even though she wanted to go to Damon to say something, she couldn't move.

Damon spun slowly in his chair and looked at her.

"Still think mandatory voting is a human right?" he asked, staring at her dead in the eyes.
