At Such a Prize

Shego's bladder alarm clock woke her. Attempting to roll out of bed she hit the floor. "What the fuck?" This wasn't her bedroom. She had been on a couch... "I'm at Kim's." There were several questions in her mind that moment, but the primary one was, "Where's the bathroom?"

"You're up?" Kim called from the kitchenette.

"Well, duh. Where's the toilet?"

"The one that doesn't have a bed in it."

"Thanks loads," Shego retorted sarcastically – although in a one bedroom apartment it would obviously be easy to find.

The green woman felt groggy. Two beers shouldn't have left her in this condition, on the other hand two fast beers on top of total exhaustion from the day before could provide an explanation. Yesterday she had gone into work despite knowing it was a not good idea. Today was definitely a good day to call in sick.

"Toast, yogurt, and orange juice?" Kim called as Shego left the bathroom.

"Uh, sure. Thanks... Got coffee?"

"A Keurig... Um – all my pods are hazelnut."

"As long as it's not decaf. My brain needs a jump-start."

"What's the point of decaf anyway?"

"Hell if I know. A placebo?"

There was strawberry jam for the toast and Shego ate half a slice as she waited for her coffee. It felt oddly nice to be seated at the small table with Kim sitting across from her. Shego tried to remember their conversation the night before. Had Kim said at some point she might be willing for sex if Shego asked? "She couldn't have said that," the green woman told herself. "Could I have dreamt it?" That seemed more likely. "Is there any good way to ask if she said it?" Shego wondered. The answer was "No."

Shego felt conflicted. Kim was cuter than anyone she'd met through the dating app – and a hell of a lot nicer. She also wasn't going to ask Shego any stupid questions about her skin color – or recoil in disgust on learning Shego was a convicted felon currently out on probation.

"So, uh, what are your plans for the day? You told Ron you were done for the semester."

"Just some little errands I put off during finals. And spend some time on the dating app. See if I can find three or four women to send messages to."

"I was, um, wondering... Wanna hang out or something?"

"Don't you have work?"

"I'm planning to call in sick. In my current condition I should not be testing expensive equipment. You said I owed you for going to that party as Megan. I was thinking today might, uh..."

"Not today. I got things to do. You're not feeling a hundred percent, and... And I said you owe me a date, I don't want to spend it right now. I'm not happy about being out here for Christmas and New Year's. I mean, I'm happy Mom and Dad are seeing Paris, but I don't want to be stuck watching my brothers. I want to see my friends, but they all want to spend time with their families in Middleton."

"No friends at the university to spend time with?"

"I had great friends – who graduated last year and left. A few new friends... But none of them are staying here for the semester break."

"And no special someone, or you wouldn't have been asking about the app. 'Cause I'm pretty sure Kim Possible wouldn't cheat."

Kim flushed slightly, "No. No I wouldn't."

"So... I'm the closest thing you've got to a friend out here?"

"You and me? Well, I know you. And I can promise that if I'm ever standing on a farmer's porch at two in the morning, with nothing but a blanket wrapped around me, you will be the person I call to come get me."

"Deal," Shego promised. "Hey, my offer to hang out today was not designed to wipe out my debt of honor. I was just saying – you're done with classes and I'm calling in sick. It was just... Never mind."

Kim smiled and gave a small nod. "Might have been fun, but I do have errands to run and you need to get some sleep."

"Maybe another time?"

Kim laughed, "That could be fun. Oh, Shego?"

"Yes?"

"Okay, given your, um, volatile relationship with Megan, how did she get you naked while she was dressed?"

"What makes you think she was dressed?"

"You said she drove off."

"So? We'd shared a bottle of wine. She suggested a little love-making under the stars out in the country. We spread out the blanket and left our clothes in the car so they wouldn't get dirty. She whispered, "Oh, I got a surprise for you in the car," and went back. I was wondering what the surprise was going to be – when I heard her start the engine. My guess is she stopped after a mile or two and got dressed. Maybe she drove home naked. I don't know."

"Okay, that explains that."

"So, I'm your big date for Christmas or New Years?"

"If I don't find someone on the app, or you don't find someone you want to be with those days."

"Deal," Shego said and prepared to leave. She held off her sigh of frustration until the door closed behind her. Shego was sure she wouldn't find anyone nicer than Kim, but no way in Hell would Kim see her as dating material. She hadn't burned that bridge behind her – she'd blown it up with C-4.
