Pure Luck
Series: Arcane
Pairing: Kagome x Jinx
Disclaimer: I don't own any of the characters or series.
Azure eyes were locked on the strands of bright blue lying over her own, streaks of neon swirling in the dark night of her own hair. The soft sound of the younger girl's breathing by her side deceptively calm. Looking at her now, she seemed so innocent, clinging to her even in her sleep, like a child seeking comfort.
To this day, Kagome still wasn't sure if she'd been lucky or not.
Being blasted by the Shikon after trying to seal it hadn't been part of her plans, but she supposed it could've been worse. After three years of constantly fighting for her life, watching innocent bystanders die one after another, and observing those who got close to the jewel get corrupted, there was no way to deny the Shikon had a will of it's own. Not once had the blasted relic granted a wish without twisting it into something it could benefit from. Even Naraku's wish remained unfulfilled. It'd tried to consume her too, but in the end, being dropped into a completely different world had been somewhat of a restrained response after trying to seal it for good. Of course, it would've been better to have woken up in any time period of the world she knew, but the priestess supposed beggars can't be choosers. Especially considering everything else that had been going on.
It certainly could've chosen a better place to drop her in.
Drastic was a poor way to describe the change of breathing the fresh clean air of the Sengoku era to the toxic fumes that had invaded her lungs before her mind could even register the change in her environment, because of course, the Shikon left her in what was considered a pretty bad area even within the already polluted under city of Zaun. The air itself seemed to burn her insides as she gasped and tried to figure out what the hell was going on, her energy fighting to try and purify a substance that hadn't even existed in the world she belonged to. It managed, somehow, keeping her heart beating while it got used to the acid trying to tear apart her lungs, though there had been no way to stay conscious in the middle of the poisonous fog surrounding her. Later, she'd come to learn that the place she appeared in wasn't even the worse this city could offer, used as she was to clean air, however, her body had zero resistance and suffered way worse than any of it's citizens would've from such a short exposure. Considering that, her mere survival could be seen as a miracle.
Getting taken away from the place helped quite a lot in her relatively swift recovery.
Slender fingers brushed the younger girl's head when a whimper escaped her. If Kagome was entirely honest, she could've been found by someone way worse than the blue haired girl currently curled up to her side. Most people would've assumed she was nothing more than a corpse slowly rotting on the ground, but her clothes had been different enough that when blue eyes found her. Curious and likely trying to see see if there was something she could salvage, Jinx got close enough to hear her ragged breathing.
Waking up in the middle of what looked like an abandoned building, covered in neon graffiti had been jarring. Yet it still fell short to what it felt like to find herself the target of those deep blue eyes when the younger girl realized the weird person she probably expected to die had opened her eyes, still weak, but able to sit up on her own.
For a reason Kagome still didn't quite understand, Jinx had taken an interest on her, and stranded in this foreign world, the priestess had no choice but to play the amnesia card and do her best to figure out what to do. Not that there was much of a choice when she was brought to Silco.
Life in the feudal era had taught her to read others, and there was no mistaking the how the look in his eyes had changed from a mix of complete dismissal and mild annoyance into interest and straight irritation as the young teen explained the situation. Kagome was confident that were it not for how obvious Jinx's desire to keep her close had been, the priestess would've been sent to be studied without a second thought. But despite all the darkness she could feel emanating from the man, his care for the blue-haired girl was as genuine as it could be, so he agreed to adding the miko to their twisted little family. Naturally, his affection didn't just transfer, Silco liked to have control, and Kagome was a variable that could affect the one person he considered a daughter. Instead of threats and hostility, though, he gave her controlled words and carefully crafted narratives that did a perfect job painting the picture of what would happen even if she were to manage to escape.
No one in Zaun would dare to hide someone Silco was after, she'd find no safe harbor in the under city. And even if she could manage to find a way to get to Piltover, the city above them, they'd never accept someone who couldn't prove her identity and had a connection with the man's organization. Not to mention, Jinx wouldn't give her up without a fight. There was nothing Kagome could offer to trade for safety, not unless she was willing to reveal her secret, and judging from how the people from above treated those they considered lower than them, that was sure to be a terrible idea. Silco's honeyed explanations were as biased as they could be, painting himself as a revolutionary, fighting for freedom and just retribution from the generational oppression from Piltover, but even filtering all that out, Kagome had seen enough of how this place worked to know he hadn't had to stretch the truth that much. Forget discrimination, top siders were pushing these people so far that Kagome could understand why some people would think violence was the only way to make a change. After a particularly uncivil encounter with an enforcer, the priestess herself was half convinced. That's why she was willing to offer her blood for research and begun offering bits and pieces of advice. Unless she was willing to show her powers and risk becoming a study, this time with no one to protect her, there really was only one thing she could offer. And it was the one thing she wasn't willing to give up.
Yes, the situation that led her here with these people were less than ideal, but despite it all, she couldn't betray these people. Not when underneath all the darkness and bloodlust she could also feel deep seethed pain lingering under the surface. For all of his initial reluctance, Silco was respectful enough and was willing to hear her opinions. Sevika's suspicious glares had lessened by now and the woman seemed to approve of her caution. And Jinx…Jinx had always cared for her in her own way.
It was the blue-haired girl that pushed for the miko to carry her own weapons, going as far as design a bow, crossbow and gun all made with the weird technology they used. As unstable as the younger girl was, haunted by delusions of past that refused to die, Kagome felt safe in her embrace.
She'd really done it this time, falling in love with a certified criminal.
Abandoning or betraying her lover out of her a sense of morality she didn't even felt a strong urge to protect just wasn't something she could do anymore. Sesshoumaru was right, she had no sense of self-preservation, and her habit of saving strays would kill her one day. Only two years and Kagome was already recognized as a member of Silco's group, someone favored by one of his most unhinged killers and served as a bit of an assistant drifting from one place to another while trying to minimize the collateral damage their actions caused. No matter what she did, a peaceful life was well out of the question for her now.
Quite honestly, she wasn't sure if she would change anything if she could. Zaun was rough, filled with odd creatures and humans that reveled in every excess they could get, but it'd be a lie to say the miko hadn't started to think of it as home. And though the organization she know belonged to was very much criminal in nature, they'd accepted her with the same amount of suspicion as everyone else. So many of the people here pretended to have no past, she was hardly an exception. Hell, Kagome wouldn't be surprised if they'd figured out she'd lied about suffering from amnesia.
Plus, it wasn't as if she couldn't understand their lust for revenge.
Even after two years, she still remembered it clearly…the pain of being abandoned and betrayed.
For three years, Kagome had dedicated her life to chasing the Shikon, to him. After a year of struggling to keep up with her studies, the miko had given up and dropped out of school, all but leaving the modern era behind her, only ever returning to refill her medical supplies. She gave up everything she had. Staying by his side and demanding nothing despite how often he tightened the thorns wrapped around her heart. And yet, when she told him what her plan was, when she explained that there was no selfless wish, that the rumor was nothing but a myth created by wishful thinking, he rejected her. His words were nothing but excuses, it was never about the dangers and the risks that could come of permanently sealing the Shikon, he just wanted his wish to be right one. Blinded by his desires, unwilling to realize that the simple act of wishing for it would mean he'd benefit. It would no longer be selfless. Robbed and injured Kagome had picked herself off the ground and fought to recover the jewel, barely managing to seal it. Altered and hurried as it was, of course her ritual didn't go without a hitch. It was his actions that caused her to fall here.
Violence wasn't always the best answer, but sometimes, it was the only satisfying one.
Besides her, Jinx whimpered again, not because of whatever dream tied her this time, more of a complain for the stop in her caress.
Forcing down a laugh, Kagome went back to combing her hair with soft gestures. Nothing would convince the priestess to betray her lover. Not to mention, odds of anyone top side actually caring enough to act were not that high. Corruption was as common here as it had been in Japan, and Silco knew the sort of people who'd gouge out their own eyes if it filled their pockets.
Pain shot to her wrist as slender fingers tightened their surprisingly strong grip. The nightmare had returned then.
"…gome?" The girl's sleepy voice broke was laced with tension.
"Did I wake you?" Kagome asked, not bothering to fight to reclaim her wrist, simply going back to caressing her when the younger girl let go of her hand. "Should I go back to my room"
"Oh, don't you dare…what are you doing awake anyway?"
"Just thinking useless things." Shaking her head, the miko gave the other girl a smile. "You should go back to sleep, you're going out tomorrow after all."
"I can handle tomorrow's assignment, no problem…more importantly, here I thought I tired you out," Jinx smirked, as if the priestess' insomnia had any more to do with physical exhaustion than her own.
With a single movement the young inventor was on top of her, deep blue eyes faltering for just a second as they found her wrist laying by her head. This wasn't the first time nightmares resulted in bruises blooming on her skin, and though her lover found it fun to play with the line between pain and pleasure, Jinx never liked it when it happened without it being intentional. As if any of these accidents ever hurt as much as what caused the scars on her skin. Still, it was cute.
Playful smile on her lips, the miko wrapped her arms around her lover's neck, pulling her closer.
"You know I've got quite a bit of stamina," Kagome said, trying to distract the other woman.
"If that's supposed to be a challenge I'll be happy to take it." Curtains of blue hair fell on both sides of the miko's face, leaving her with nowhere to look but straight up. "But you might regret it later."
"Now that sounds like a promise."
Heat was quick to rise inside her as the younger girl leaned down, stealing her breath. People would get hurt if she let her lover leave tomorrow. Every day she let herself get swallowed by the love she was given was a day she let herself lose another sliver of herself. Stranded on a foreign world, fighting to breathe, Jinx was the one who saved her, it really didn't matter if she couldn't find herself after this, to stay by her side, Kagome was happy to leave it all up to luck.
Biting back a moan, she let her hands trail down on bare skin. This really wasn't an outcome she could complain about.
Caitlyn…
Caytlin, caytlin, caytlin.
Jinx knew her name now. And she wouldn't forget it, no, absolutely not.
No way in fucking hell.
Because that woman took her sister away from her. Her sister who was alive. Her sister who Kagome unknowingly patched up in that little clinic of hers until Silco showed up, trying to capture her sister.
He kew she was alive. He'd gone ahead and filled the streets of the under city with his people searching for her without telling Jinx. No, he didn't say a word, and she still wouldn't know if not for Sevika of all fucking people. And he sure as hell wouldn't have brought Vi to her if not for Kagome's intervention.
Liar.
Silco was a fucking liar…
"Jinx!"
Ah, Kagome was worried again, it flooded her voice. Unfocused eyes glanced down, drawn by the patch of red growing under her.
Right, she'd told her to wait, didn't she?
It wasn't that bad, not anymore, she'd fixed it. Maybe not as good as her lover would but it was closed. Kagome was kneeling by her side already, frantic hands trying to lift the wet fabric. She was a worrier. Really, such a worrier…kinda like Silco, in a way.
Liar.
"Gods, this is…let me see what I can do."
In the end, Silco believed the tale about the amnesia. You had to live under a rock not to know about Hex Tech or Piltover, and the way she jumped when she first walked through the Lanes had been as cute as unexpected. Those were genuine. It'd be more suspicious to pretend not to know. But Jinx was the one who found her. She'd seen the older girl's hesitation when she first answered her questions. She'd let it go, though. How someone could live in such a sheltered place while also accumulating a nice mosaic of scars, the teen didn't know, but it didn't matter. Couldn't blame anyone for wanting to bury their past. Kagome wasn't lying to her, she was lying to the world.
Meaning she had to check.
One strong grip on midnight locks. Lips crashing against lips. She didn't fight her, not quite. She didn't relax into it either. Gentle hands tried to put some pressure on her arms.
"Wait, Jinx..!" A hand softly touched her cheek, even as the teen went to take her words again. "Let me clean your wound first!"
"Ka-go-me~"
"Even though you've closed it, it can still get infected." Worried, her precious worried lover was careful with her tone. "Just let me take care of it, please."
"Hey, Kagome, how did you get here again?" Blue eyes focused on azure.
Understanding lit those deep oceans of hers. Oh, she knew what was going on in her head. Kagome did know, of course she knew, because out of everyone she was the one who understood better. Not completely, but better still.
She's going to lie. Everyone lies.
No, she wouldn't.
The only person who didn't try to set rules was her. The only one who acknowledged the voices was her. Her voice was the only thing that ever helped quiet them down. She loved her. Now that she was asking directly she wouldn't lie to her. All she had to do was wait and…
"…I don't know." They were the same words as before, when Silco asked, so this..! "I never knew this place even existed in the first place. Not Piltover, not Zaun…not a single country on the maps."
Lie, this had to be a lie.
No!
No, no, this was too ridiculous to be a lie.
"Then where do you come from?"
"Tokyo, Japan…or Edo, if you want to be accurate." Kagome was smiling, not the smiles Jinx liked, this was bitter and sad and full of resentment. "I don't really belong here, in this world. Of course, I wondered if there was a way to go back, but there's no way, what brought me here is sealed for good…and even if I could, there's nothing left for me to go back to.
"I wasn't sure how to explain this, or if trying to say anything would end up with me locked in a loony bin. Not like it matters anymore. I'm here for good."
Lying, making up fantasy tales, that's all she's doing!
"You know me, Jinx, you can tell when I lie." Her voice was soft, but it was still louder than the others. Gentle hands now softly holding her face. "You're all I have."
Pain began to register, throbbing, but it was easy to forget when it was Kagome who drew her in. Right, even if everyone else lied, the older girl had taken care of her almost from the moment they met. She was the one who could tell her what was really here.
"Then you're gonna help me, right?" Jinx's voice was rough, tired ad hoarse as she finally pulled back. "No matter what."
"What else would I do?"
"You…talked to her, right?." The explanation had been cut short thanks to those fucking bugs, but the teen remembered her words even through all the noise in her head. "What did she say?"
"Can I clean this first?" In a soft gesture, slender fingers traced her leg, caked in blood.
Oh…yeah, they should probably do something about it. Silently, Jinx nodded, watching as the concern finally melted from her lover's eyes as she went to work in what had become her job for the last two years.
"Didn't get much of a chance to try and talk to her, the enforcer began to preach when she realized I had a connection to Silco," the older woman huffed, rolling her eyes. "But when he showed up, the first thing Vi did was ask about you, and she tried to interrogate me too after she realized I knew you."
"So she was…looking for me?"
"That's what it looked like." Careful hands poured clean water on her leg, using a damp rag to tenderly wash away the drying crimson. For all the attention her lover was giving her wound, Jinx could tell she was more worried about picking the right words. "That said, I don't think the enforcer had any idea you were her sister…and from that mess back there, I don't think the Hextech mess that brought her here was shared with Vi."
"Are you…sure?"
"It's just what I saw," Kagome said, firmly and slowly wrapping around a bandage around her leg. "Silco must've moved to block the passage to top side, we should be able to find them again, if the Firelights took them they should still be somewhere down here, it's just a matter of time."
"Right, we can find them, find her." And the best way to do that was to go to Silco. It was about time for his shot anyway,
"Where should we go, Jinx?"
Framed by midnight hair, her lover's eyes seemed to shine brighter as she looked at her. Kagome wouldn't leave her. She knew that now. Her lover was kind, caring for the people of the under city as best as she could without disrupting Silco's plans. Still, she never complained or tensed whenever she went with her in one of her assignments and corpses littered the ground. Caring and loving Kagome only worried about potential injuries.
Slender arms were now wrapped around her, as the older girl stood up, gently embracing her. Jinx didn't even notice when her hands moved to hold onto Kagome's shirt, the voices were quiet now and she could think.
"Well, someone has something to share with us, dontcha think?" One last chance for honesty, it was fair. "Secrets are no good between family."
"I'll make sure to clear the floor then."
"And then… then, we'll have to try our luck topside, tie up those loose ends."
A/N: I may have rushed to write this in the first bit of free time I had after the second trailer released…but well, I had to write this down anyway, so here we are. Might work on another short story with Arcane later on, maybe different characters, maybe just flesh this a little more.
As always, thank you guys so much for reading and any and all review/comment/criticism is greatly appreciated.
