"With your fame and fortune, I expected a mansion," Spyro said to the black dragoness, as the pair made their way down the halls of the suites complex.
After flying, with the help of Cynder and Gale, the group made it to Shatterpoint. They were careful to avoid any members of the press, and ignored calls from the public. Ember and Gale left to get someone; who it was, Spyro didn't know. Cynder, meanwhile, would get Spyro settled at her place.
Cynder lived in a community of suites, along with other well-known and famous individuals. She liked the privacy it provided, rather than in a large home, where everyone knew where she was. Rather than go through the main lobby, the pair went through a rear entrance to avoid any bystanders, to get Spyro a key to her suite and the buildings. The purple dragon was surprised that the staff was welcoming of them. Although, he wondered if they were only acting because Cynder was there. Cynder spoke of their engagement with Spyro adding a few details to ensure it was believable.
Spyro was requested to be screened by security; which consisted Cynder and himself answering questions from a pair of security dragons. One was an earth dragon and the other was a fear dragon, and both were large, each a head taller than Spyro. The two were imposing, but he could tell that the pair were almost as nervous had he was. After all; how do common security dragons deal with a purple dragon? A type of dragon, where the last one tried to bring the destruction to the realms.
Spyro answered their questions calmly, and tried to be honest. At least as honest as he could be, as he needed to add some white lies about his engagement to Cynder. The black dragoness would vouch for him, adding some details of her own.
Afterward, he was cleared to be added as a guest for Cynder, though, Spyro was sure they would keep a close eye on him. The pair made their way to her suite. It was a large building that reminded Spyro of the hotels from Warfang, for the rich. The décor was beautiful, the pools were large and some smaller ones that could be heated. They passed a few restaurants and one even had the chef cook in front of the guests. Spyro definitely felt out of place.
Cynder's suite was on the top floor. So why they didn't just fly to the suite? Cynder wanted the reveal to be a surprise, making Spyro roll his eyes, but smile nonetheless.
"Here we are," the black dragoness said, stopping in front of her door.
"We couldn't fly," Spyro stated, stopping at the door as well, "We just 'had' to walk up several flights of stairs."
"Don't be a hatchling," Cynder replied, "This will be your home away from home."
Until you inevitably kick me out, Spyro thought to himself.
"Now, do the honors by using your own key."
Spyro shook his head, "Fine," the purple dragon inserted the key into the lock, turning it, unlocking the door, and opening it.
Before him was a large living room, with large cushions and a couch with a table, along with the perfect view of the city. To Spyro's immediate left was a kitchen, with cabinets, a sink, and a stove. To his right was a dining area with a table and cushions. In the living area he could see two doors, assuming that those lead to the bedrooms.
"Wow."
Cynder giggled, "I needed to see your reaction."
The pair walked into the suite, Spyro noting the cleanliness of it. Cynder gestured to the right, "That is your room, feel free to get comfortable."
Spyro walked into his new room, taken aback. It was clearly bigger than his old room in the temple. He walked to the large bed, a nightstand next to it, placing his satchel on the bed. Across the foot of the bed was a desk, and to the left of the bed was a window. To the right had the bathroom.
"Is it okay?" Cynder asked, wanting to make sure Spyro had everything he needed.
"Yeah, it's more than enough."
A knock came from the main door, "That must be Ember and Gale."
"They don't have keys?" Spyro asked.
"Security lets them in, but you are the only other person that has a key."
"Glad you trust me so much," Spyro said, adding a goofy smile.
Cynder laughed, "I'm trusting you with my reputation, so why not my home?"
Cynder opened the door, to see Ember, Gale, and a red dragon.
The dragon looked a lot like Spyro; his body was red, and his chest, underbelly, and wing membranes were gold, same for his horns and tail spade.
"Hey, Cynder," the dragon greeted.
"Good to see you again, Flame," Cynder replied.
The three newcomers walked in, Flame looking over Spyro. Flame stopped by the purple dragon and said, "You must be the lucky dragon who won Cynder's heart."
Spyro's heart rate sped up, knowing that he had to keep up with their act. And if he messed up, Cynder's reputation was finished, and he refused to be the one to do so.
With confidence, he answered, "Yes, I am."
Flame chuckle, waving a paw, "Don't worry, Ember told me the whole thing."
Suddenly, Spyro's confidence came crashing down. Spyro looked over to the pink dragoness for confirmation.
Ember replied, "This is Flame, my fiancé."
Flame puffed his chest out, "Yep, I'm the dragon that swept her off her paws!"
"More like groveled before me," Ember shot back, making Flame's chest deflate.
"Come on, Em. You know you love me," the red dragon said, stepping closer to her, and pecking her on the cheek. Ember's cheeks turned to a darker shade.
Spyro couldn't help but wonder how the pink and red dragons were a couple. Ember was very headstrong and, in Spyro's opinion, narrow minded. And Flame was clearly outgoing and friendly.
The heart wants what it wants, Spyro concluded to himself.
"So," Flame started, starring as Spyro, "am I the only one who is a little uncomfortable that the purple dragon is a purple version of me?"
Spyro frowned, "Maybe you are a red version of me."
Flame narrowed his eyes, "How old are you?"
"25."
"HA!" Flame shouted, pointing a claw, "26! My statement still stands."
Ember sighed, "Forgive him, he's an idiot." She looked to her betrothed with love in her eyes, surprising Spyro, "but he is my lovable idiot."
Gale cleared her throat, getting everyone's attention, "The reason we are here is to figure out our plan?"
"What plan?" Spyro asked.
Ember took over, "We need to officially introduce you to the public as Cynder's fiancé."
"A little late for that."
Ember rolled her eyes, "No, as in get them to know more about you. We will have to set up interview for the two of you."
Cynder asked, "Why not a conference?"
"I agree with Ember," Gale said, "it might be better on Spyro if it was an interview."
"What makes you say that?" the purple dragon asked.
"And interview has usually one person, maybe two people, for one organization asking questions. While a conference as a room full of people from a variety of organizations who will shout out questions at you to answer."
Spyro chuckled nervously, "Yeah, the interview would work better."
Gale turned to Ember, "Do you think we should go to Inside League for the interview?"
Ember nodded, "That will work. They are known for their coverage of anything Fighters League related, we might as well start there." The pink dragoness looked to Spyro, "Do you have anything we should know about?"
Spyro raised a brow, "Such as…"
"Things that the press will use against us. You know; baggage?"
The dragon still wasn't following, so Flame tried to be helpful, "Bad things… Things like," he tried to think something, but was drawing a blank. After a moment, he just spat something out, "Do you do drugs?"
"WHAT?!" Spyro asked, completely blown away at the question.
"Flame!" the three dragonesses shouted, equally shocked.
"What?" the fire dragon asked, knowing that it was a dumb question, "It would be bad if he did, right?"
Spyro shook his head, "No, I've never done anything like that," offended at the accusation.
"What about something like; have you committed any crimes?" Flame said, finding some humor in everyone's reactions.
"No," Spyro replied, no longer finding it amusing, if it ever was.
"What about-" the fire dragon paused, seeing Spyro's deadpanned expression, "never mind."
Cynder spoke up, "Flame, Spyro has nothing bad to hide. In fact, he is the cleanest and kindest dragon I know."
Spyro smiled, a warmth in his chest at the black dragoness' words.
"Anyways," Ember interrupted, "Cynder, Gale, and I have to have a chat about Heart Diamond Jewelry matters." The pink dragoness looked to the two males, "You two, don't make a mess."
"Why do you assume we'll make a mess?" Flame asked.
"You? Because I live with you."
Spyro suppressed a smile at Flame's pouting face. Soon the females gathered in Cynder's room, closing the door behind them, and leaving the two males alone.
There was an awkward pause.
Maybe I should say something, Spyro thought to himself, I will be seeing him a lot.
Spyro was about to speak, "You don't like me," Flame spoke first.
The purple dragon was taken aback at the comment, "What? What makes you say that?"
"You look stiff, and you're giving me a weird look."
Spyro raised a brow, "I mean, how else am I supposed to act after getting asked… those kinds of questions?"
Flame's lips twitched upward, "Fair point." Flame stepped forward and held up a paw, "The name's Flame, Ember's betrothed."
Spyro shook the offered paw, "Spyro, erm…. Cynder's pretend betrothed."
"So, tell me about yourself Spyro," Flame said, "What is it like have four different elements? I bet it's awesome."
Spyro frowned, "It really isn't." The statement caused the fire dragon to frown as well, as he listened to the purple dragon. "A lot of dual element dragons have problems with using both of their elements. Adding two more was just too much at times."
Flame raised a brow, interested, "Really? I would've assumed that you were like Cynder, mastering your powers with ease."
The purple dragon smiled, "No, Cynder is an exception. She is… well… perfect. She got the hang of her elements in no time, while I was a slower starter."
"Yeah, I was a late bloomer too. But, hey, you are only the second purple dragon to ever exist."
"I don't to see the positive in that," Spyro said, more spiteful than he intended.
Flame was slightly taken back from the statement. He looked over the dragon before him; Spyro's form was ever so slightly hunched, Spyro' eyes not meeting his own, and his demeanor dark. Flame realized that Spyro, indeed, carried some hefty baggage. However, it was not the type of baggage that Ember was concerned about. Flame wondered if anyone else had caught onto this.
"It couldn't be all that bad," Flame said.
Spyro shook his head, "Can we change the subject?"
That only confirmed Flame's suspicion, You need to talk to someone, but are too afraid to open up. Flame then said, "Okay, but, if you want to talk about it… I'm a pretty good listener."
Spyro looked up to the fire dragon, Flame's eyes holding kindness and understanding. He wasn't expecting the dragon to be so willing to talk, but it was a welcoming gesture. "Thanks, I appreciate it."
"Not a problem, besides, it is going to be nice talking with another male."
Spyro's lips twitched up, "No guy friends?"
"Being future mates with a successful and rich business-dragoness might have scared some of them off."
The next sentence flew out of Spyro's mouth, "Are you sure it wasn't Ember that did that." Spyro was taken aback about what he just said. The purple dragon tried to walk it back, "Flame, I'm so sorry! That was completely uncalled for."
However, Flame chuckled, "Maybe she did, she is a feisty one, but I love her for it." Flame smiled at Spyro's expression, "Hey, relax. I know you don't mean anything by it."
Spyro scratched the back of his neck, "I just… well…"
Flame finished, "I've known many, many dragons, and already, I'd rather have a mead with you."
Spyro chuckled nervously, "I'm not much of a drinker."
Flame frowned for a quick moment, then smiled, "Well, every party needs a pooper."
The purple dragon chuckled, his body relaxing as the two engaged in a friendly conversation, "So, what do you do? Are you a business-dragon, like Ember?"
Flame laughed, "No way, too boring. I am in the Dragon's Fighter's League."
That peaked Spyro's interest, "Really? What has that been like?"
"A long road, but I eventually got a break and I'm doing pretty well if I do say so myself."
"Are you a high rank competitor?" Spyro swore some color was lost in the red dragon's face.
"Erm… details aren't important." Spyro raised a brow, then Flame decided to add, "I'm currently ranked 16th in the League. I might be able to squeeze into 15th if things go my way."
"That's still really good."
"Thanks," Flame said, taking the complement, "What about you? What do you do?"
"I assist the Guardians at the temple."
"Like an assistant teacher, or a tutor?" Flame asked causally.
"Yeah, to put it simply," Spyro said, looking down, "not exactly Cynder's fiancé material, I know."
Sitting in front of Flame, was a purple dragon who might just have enough power to bring down the realms. And he constantly put himself down. Flame wanted to know why, but ultimately knew that the first conversation they had was not the one to try. Spyro had many layers built up, and the fire dragon knew that he had to delicately peal them away, rather than rip them off.
"Don't say that. Do you have your own class or something?"
Spyro shifted, "I teach dual element dragons."
"Why's that?" Flame asked with interest.
"Ignitus, the Fire Guardian, knew how I struggled with more than one element. He thought that it would be good for a dragon with more than one element to help others."
"Makes sense," Flame said with a nod, "You can relate to them."
Spyro nodded, "Yeah, he said the same thing."
The door to Cynder's room opened, the three dragonesses walking into the living room.
"Are you two getting along?" Cynder asked the two males.
Flame smiled, placing himself next to Spyro, throwing a foreleg on the purple dragon, "Just fine. We're just getting to know each other."
"That's good," Ember said, "but we have more important things to discuss."
Ember was a business first kind of dragoness, and Spyro still wondered how her and Flame got together. Maybe if he and Flame opened up more in the future he may find out.
Gale spoke up, "I'm going to set up an interview with Inside League. The sooner I can arrange this the better."
Cynder nodded in agreement, "Go ahead and do that, Ember and I will teach Spyro the 'Do's and Don'ts' of interviews."
"How hard could that be?" Spyro asked.
The black dragoness turned to him and said, "Well, anything you say will be used against you. To damage your image."
Spyro shrugged, "Not that I have an image to begin with." A sharp pain shot in his foreleg as Cynder poked him with her tail blade. "Ouch! Stop that!"
Cynder giggled, "Don't be a hatchling. After this interview, everyone will see who you are."
What? A loser dragon who has nothing to offer? He thought to himself, Or the dragon who is in a fake engagement to the most talented and beautiful dragoness in all the realms?
"Don't worry!" Flame said, "I'll help you out, I've done a few interviews."
Ember rolled her eyes, "Only because you are my fiancé."
"It still counts! Besides who else to give advice on this but me?"
"Oh, I'm sure I can make a list."
As the two continued their banter, Cynder and Spyro shifted their gazes from Flame to Ember. Spyro turned to Cynder, "Does this happened often?"
"It does, but mostly in good fun. How about I give you a few pointers, at least before Ember give you a boring lecture like she did Flame and me."
