Chapter One : New Students at Plumfield
It was a bright , sunny Monday morning at the Plumfield School for Boys , and of late , Girls. Smiling at his reflection in the mirror , Dan Maddison combed his brown hair back from his face. ''Come on , Dan , we're going to be late for breakfast and meeting the new students Mr. Laurie is sponsoring'' ; Nat said from his corner. Relax , Nat , we are'nt gonna' be late ; Dan replied , smiling playfully at his friend. What do you think the new students'll be like , Nat ? ; Emil asked as he readied himself for the day. Oh , I imagine they'll be really nice , Emil ; Nat replied.
You have any idea who these two are , Nat ? ; Dan asked. I don't know their names , but they're a brother and sister , and Mr. Laurie found them living on the streets of Boston , Dan ; Nat replied as they finished. Now , we'd better get going so we don't miss breakfast , you guys ; Nat said as he opened their bedroom door. Any chance we crossed paths with em' while we were in Boston , Nat ? ; Dan asked as they walked downstairs and into the dining room. Maybe , Dan , they're about the same age as you ; Nat said. Mornin , Dan , mornin , Nat , did you hear about the new students ! ; Nan exclaimed , greeting her two friends.
Yeah , we've heard about the two of them , Nan ; Dan said , flashing her a mischievious grin. Whoever they are , I hope they'll do all my chores ! ; Emil joked. Big chance of that , Emil , they'll be assigned plenty of chores of their own ! ; Nan laughed. Well , I just hope they're good sports . whoever they are ! ; Dan laughed. Oh , you would , Dan ! ; Bess said , walking into the dining room. Hey , how long were you standin' there listenin' to us ! ; Dan exclaimed , giving Bess a teasing smile. For your information , I just came downstairs , Dan ; Bess said. So Bess , did your father tell you who the brother and sister he found are ? ; Dan asked curiously.
No , Dan , he did'nt mention to me who they are , exactly ; Bess replied. Where's Mrs. Jo , Bess ? ; Nat asked as they sat down to breakfast. Mrs. Jo went to Mr. Laurie's to fetch the new boy and his sister and bring them back here , Nat ; Asia said as she came in from the kitchen. Thanks , Asia ; Nat replied as she set breakfast on the table. Did Aunt Jo mean for us to start without her , Asia ? ; Bess asked from her place. Well , she sure would'nt want your breakfast to be gettin' cold , Bess ; Asia said. When did Mrs. Jo say she'd be back , Asia ? ; Dan asked. Oh , she should be back any minute now , Dan ; Asia said. Did Franz go with her , we have'nt seen him yet this morning ; Nat remarked.
I guess he did go with Mrs. Jo , Nat ; Dan said from his place next to Nat. What do you think the new boy and his sister'll be like , Bess ? ; Nan asked from her place. Oh , I don't know , but I hope he'll be a gentleman , and she'll be a little lady , Nan ; Bess said , giving Dan a lady -like smile. Fat chance of that , Bess , Mr. Laurie found them both on the streets of Boston ; Dan said. I know that , Dan , but still one can hope ; Bess said , scowling at Dan teasingly. Nah , Bess , they'll just be regular kids , like I was when Mr. Laurie brought me to Plumfield ; Dan said , flashing her one of his bright smiles.
Alright , if you say so , Dan ; Bess said , conceding defeat. And I suppose if whoever she is is a tomboy , I'll just have to turn her into a lady , Dan ; Bess said , smiling at the thought of her skills in lady-making. Oh , I would'nt bet on that , Bess ! ; Dan laughed. Where I come from , the girls don't turn into fancy ladies so easy ; Dan teased. Oh , we'll see about that , Dan ; Bess retorted , poking Dan in the ribs playfully. Oh , yeah , Bess , you're on ! ; Dan exclaimed , playfully poking her back. Hey , everybody , Mrs. Jo's back with the new kids ! ; Emil yelled from the front window. C'mon , let's go and welcome em' both , everybody ! ; Dan exclaimed as he raced out of the room.
Okay , Dan , wait for us ! ; Nan called as she , Nat , and Bess followed him onto the front porch. Is she coming yet , Dan ? ; Nan asked as she and Nat and Bess walked up to him. The carriage just pulled up , Nan; Dan replied. Then suddenly , the carriage door opened and out stepped Mrs. Jo with a boy and girl alike enough to be twins. There they are , Dan ; Nat said. Do you think they're twins , Dan ? ; Nan asked as Mrs. Jo walked to the house with them. I don't know , they could be , Nan ; Dan replied , noticing that something was oddly familiar about the boy walking next to Mrs . Jo . They look nice enough ; Bess remarked.
What's the matter , Dan , you look like you just saw a ghost ; Nan said , seeing the strange look on her friend's face. I don't know , Nan , but that boy , it's like I'm lookin' in the mirror , at myself ; Dan said , wondering why the stranger looked so much like him. Come to think of it , he sort of does look like you a little , Dan ; Nat said as the strange boy came closer. Maybe you two are twins that were switched at birth , Dan ; Bess teased. Uh , huh , right , Bess ! ; Dan laughed. I'm sure it's just my imagination , Nat ; Dan said , walking towards Mrs. Jo.
Hey , Mrs. Jo , it's good to have you back ! ; Dan exclaimed happily. Hi , Mrs. Jo ; Nan smiled. Hello , Nan ; Mrs. Jo replied , hugging Nan warmly. Nan , Dan , I'd like you to meet our new students , Michael and Rosie Donnell ; Mrs. Jo said , smiling warmly. Hi , I'm Nan , and I'm pleased to meet you both ; Nan said. Pleased to meet you , Nan ! ; Rosie said enthusiastically. And I'm Michael , her brother ; said the boy that was practically the spitting image of Dan. Hey , Michael , good to meet you ; Dan said , flashing them both a friendly smile. Everyone calls me Mike ; the boy said. And everyone calls me Dan ; Dan replied.
