Bubble Blowers Written By: anneboleynlover
Author's Summary: Ami chooses to teach Chibi-Usa the fun in the art of blowing bubbles and does lead to a conversation about their families.
Disclaimer: I do not own Sailor Moon. I ended up not writing fanfiction for a while so I might be rusty. I feel fine with constructive criticism but no flames. I got to write this one-shot about Ami and Chibi-Usa at the request of -Shiningkingghidora. I happen to not be a big fan of Chibi-Usa, but I hope that I have portrayed her fairly in this one-shot. Please read and review!
Ami's father used to blow bubbles with her when she had been little. Bubble blowing involved creating small, thin-walled spheres filled with air using a soap solution and a wand or straw. It came to be a popular activity for children as it engaged play that offered fun and engaged play that prompted motor skill development. Her father and her did enjoy watching the bubbles escape the wand and float in the air before they popped. Ami enjoyed blowing bubbles with her father as it had been one of the many fun childhood pastimes her father wanted her to enjoy. She felt that Chibi-Usa would like to learn the fun of it too and was determined to teach her that there was more to Ami than just academics and books as that is all Chibi-Usa seemed to think there was to her. Ami got the chance to show her that when she asked Chibi-Usa if she would like to spend the night at her apartment and Chibi-Usa reluctantly agreed as she felt that they would do nothing more than doing homework and ending up studying for exams, which was the last thing that she wanted to do.
However, Ami surprised her as she put her schoolbooks to the side and pulled out a bottle of bubbles and a wand of which to blow bubbles with.
"What is that, Ami-chan?" Chibi-Usa asked.
"Bubble soap," Ami answered. "Have you ever blown bubbles before, Chibi-Usa?"
"No," Chibi-Usa admitted. "Daddy and Mommy never taught me how to do something like that. Is it fun?"
"Yes," Ami assured her.
"How did you learn how to do it?" Chib-Usa asked.
"My father did," Ami answered.
"So, we are not going to do our homework and end up studying for exams tonight?" Chibi-Usa burst out looking bright and cheerful at the prospect of doing something other than homework for once with Ami.
"That is right!" Ami confirmed.
"How do you blow bubbles?" Chibi-Usa asked.
Ami picked up the bubble wand and dipped it in the bubble soap. "Believe me when I say it is easy," Ami answered. "You come to dip the bubble wand into the bubble soap like this. Then you do put it close to your mouth and blow into it to create bubbles in the air." She ended up blowing in the bubble wand and bubbles appeared in the air before they popped.
"That looks like fun!" Chibi-Usa agreed. "Can I try?"
"Sure!" Ami assured her.
Chibi-Usa picked up the bubble wand and dipped it in the bubble soap. She did put it to her lips and blew. Bubbles ended up escaping the wand and floated in the air for several moments before they faded in the air. "This is fun!" Chibi-Usa burst out happily. "Ami-chan?"
"Yes, Chibi-Usa?"
"What are your parents like?" Chibi-Usa asked.
Ami looked surprised at that particular question.
"Did I offend you?" Chibi-Usa looked upset at the thought of that.
"It is alright," Ami commented. "According to my mother, Dad and Mom accepted each other for who they were, been friends with each other, cared about each other, and did love each other at one point or else they would never had gotten married or had me. Both of them just grew apart from each other, but I never noticed it as they hid their marital problems from me. The divorce came as a shock to me. Dad was the one who filed for divorce when I was eight years old after he left home to go to his cabin in the woods to draw and paint and enjoy the beauty of nature, but he never came back home despite promising me that he would."
"What is he like?" Chibi-Usa asked.
"An artist," Ami answered. "Brown-haired and blue-eyed, he comes to wear eyeglasses. I came to learn how to color and draw from him and he did discuss the importance of art history with him as he believes there is more to life than just academics and books and he wanted me to realize that. Coloring and drawing is a form of art therapy for me as it did help me deal with being bullied by others in school before I met Usagi-chan, Rei-chan, Mako-chan, and Minako-chan as it helped to calm me down whenever I was feeling sad because of those bullies, but now I do it because it relaxes me and helps me deal with stress the way it does my father. I come to love to play chess and swim because of him too. Dad does love nature—flowers, grass, and trees—but also water—so he would take me to the beach where we would bring a cooler full of soda to drink and sandwiches and potato chips to eat and a bucket and a shovel to build sandcastles with—where he would play in the cold and deep blue waves of the ocean with me. I end up getting a lot of my love for water because of him. I feel appreciate of my father for his artistic brilliance and creativity which I hope he passed onto me. I got a Belle doll sent to me in the mail from him once since he remembered that I love Belle from Beauty and the Beast as I once told him I wanted one which was a nice surprise and Mom said was sweet of him. However, the only contact I have with him now are the postcards of his drawings and paintings on my birthdays along with the rare occasional phone call."
"And your mom?" Chibi-Usa blurted out.
"You are aware that I got my blue hair and my blue eyes from Mom," Ami commented. "Brilliance, courage, and drive are qualities I would use to describe her as she is a rich and successful doctor who saves peoples' lives on a regular basis. I consider her to be a hero. However, she does happen to be very busy, so she had a hard time spending time with me as I got older, but her and I baked cookies that we ate and drank down with icy cold milk and came to go to the amusement park on her days off. I enjoy her cooking just as much as Dad did as she is an excellent cook. For my birthdays Mom always takes the entire whole day off of work to make me my favorite foods and a big chocolate cake to eat and gives me a lot of nice birthday presents."
"As good as Mako-chan?" Chibi-Usa questioned.
"No," Ami confessed, "but close to it."
"Why do you think that your parents got a divorce, Ami-chan?" Chibi-Usa wanted to know.
"Dad and Mom rarely had time to spend together, Chibi-Usa," Ami answered, "as Dad was always busy in his art studio drawing and painting his newest masterpieces to sell to art galleries and Mom came to work a lot of hours at the hospital. Both of them realized that who they actually were, and the basic characteristics of their own personalities meant that they had little in common with each other. Dad came to enjoy wearing casual clothes such as short-sleeve shirts and blue jeans where Mom enjoys wearing expensive dress clothes and fine jewelry and Dad does not mind eating inexpensive food such as curry and ramen noodles while Mom enjoys exotics foods and fashionable restaurants to eat at. Dad does enjoy life in the woods and nature while Mom does enjoy life in big cosmopolitan cities. Dad ends up being passionate about art, but even though Mom came to praise my drawings and paintings I did with Dad and learned a lot about art history from Dad during the time they were married she has no real interest in it just like Dad learned a lot of scientific information about medicine from Mom, he has no real interest in medicine. I feel that is why Dad filed for divorce and gave Mom custody of me and Mom had not tried to fight it."
"Do you miss your dad and wish you had more time to spend with your mom, Ami-chan?" Chibi-Usa blurted out seeing a sad look passing on Ami's face.
"Every day," Ami confessed looking at though she were near tears.
"I am sorry, Ami," Chibi-Usa apologized.
"What about you?" Ami asked. "What kind of parents are King Endymion and Neo-Queen Serenity like?"
"Daddy and Mommy are always busy," Chibi-Usa answered. "Both of them accept me for who I am, believe in me, care about me, and do love me and they came to make sure I have clothes to wear, drinks to drink, food to eat, and lots of toys to play with. I come to have the best of everything as the princess of Crystal Tokyo. Daddy and Mommy color and draw with me and go for walks in the park with me and Daddy tells me bedtime stories of the time when Mommy was Sailor Moon, but everybody used to compare me to Mommy. Mommy does happen to be viewed as a beautiful goddess with her blonde hair as golden as the sun, blue eyes the color of the ocean, and skin as fair as ivory and is seen as a brilliant, courageous, and dignified lady who I wish I could grow up to be like—not like clumsy, dumb, lazy Usagi."
"Usagi-chan actually has a brain and common sense, Chibi-Usa," Ami scolded, "even if she fails to apply it to doing homework and ending up studying for exams just like she has courage and determination to always do the right thing and has a good heart in spite of her tendency to be selfish on occasion."
"But all she does, Ami-chan, is color," Chibi-Usa shot back, "draw, eat, play videogames, read manga, and sleep not like Mommy!"
"That is because she is only a teenager, Chibi-Usa," Ami told her, "so of course she would like to do things that all teenagers like to do, but she still fights for love and justice and that is the important thing."
"Mommy does not hug or kiss me a lot," Chibi-Usa confessed looking sad.
"I am sorry about that, Chibi-Usa." Ami did look sorry at the lack of affection the little girl believed her mother did not show to her.
"Are you jealous of her, Ami-chan?" Chibi-Usa asked all of a sudden, shocking Ami to the core.
"Jealous?" Ami repeated.
"Yeah," Chibi-Usa blurted out, "because Mommy is able to get married to a man who accepts her for who she is, believes in her, cares about her, and does love her and ends up having a child with her while you might never be able to."
A part of Ami longed to be able to find someone who accepted her for who she was, become friends with her, care about her, and do fall in love with her. She believed in true love, but her former lover auburn-haired and green-eyed Zoisite during the Silver Millenium had been brainwashed and came to join forces with Queen Beryl during the attack on the Moon Kingdom. Brown-haired and brown-eyed Ryo Urawa came to have a crush on her. However, that relationship did not last long. Did she envy Usagi for knowing she would be able to get married and have children in the future and she might never be able to express the good life and happiness Usagi would have?
"I guess so," Ami confessed, "but that is not Usagi's fault."
"You are right," Chibi-Usa agreed," it is not."
"Would you like to blow some more bubbles?" Ami asked wanting to change the topic of conversation to something more bright and cheerful.
"Yeah!" Chibi-Usa burst out looking excited.
They did.
