Prologue
The Blitz, 1940
One dark night in London, random German men were riding in private jets. Talking in German, each of them fired into the town below them.
Searchlights moved around, trying to find the planes.
One of the pilots watched as their aim exploded in the town.
Then, the German pilots began to release bombs from their planes, allowing them to crash into London.
Ten-year-old Mowgli was standing near the window inside his own living room, watching the scene.
His mother, Darling, came running into the room. "Mowgli!" She cried. "Get away from there!" She yanked Mowgli away from the window, as another bomb crashed not too far away, and drew the drapes shut. "Peter!"
Her eldest son, thirteen-year-old Peter Pan, came running into the living room, as well.
Darling took Mowgli by the shoulders, and shook him. "What do you think you're doing?!" She scolded him. "Peter, quickly, the shelter! Now!"
Peter grabbed Mowgli by the wrist. "Come on!" He began to pull him out of the room.
"No, wait!" Mowgli tried to reach for something.
But Peter harshly stopped him. "Come on! Leave it!"
Darling grabbed some extra blankets and a flashlight, before following her sons out of the living room.
In one of the bedrooms, six-year-old Penny lay in her bed, frightened by all the commotion outside. "Mummy!" She cried, as another bomb crashed into town.
Her older sister, twelve-year-old Eilonwy, rushed into the room, carrying a flashlight, to grab some things from her bed. She then noticed Penny still in bed.
"Penny, come on!" She reached her hand out to Penny, who took it frantically.
Penny, keeping her teddy bear tight in her arm, let Eilonwy pull her out of bed, and the two girls ran out of the bedroom.
Darling, and her two sons and daughters, all ran outside straight towards the bomb shelter.
"Come on, quickly!" Darling informed her children.
"Run!" cried Peter.
Penny shrieked as they all ran.
"Run!" Peter cried, again.
"Hurry!" Eilonwy joined in.
"Mum!" cried Penny.
As they arrived at the bomb shelter, Mowgli suddenly turned around, as he just remembered something. "Wait! Dad!" He began to run back to the house.
"Mowgli!" Peter tried to grab at him, and then followed his brother.
"Mowgli, no!" screamed Darling.
"I'll get him!" Peter told his mother.
But even this didn't help calm Darling down, as she saw another bomb plummeting down their way. "Peter, come back!" She demanded.
Peter ignored her, as he continued to chase Mowgli in the house. "Mowgli! Come here!"
Mowgli rushed back into the living room to retrieve a photograph of their father, Jim Dear.
"Mowgli! Get down!" warned Peter.
He pushed Mowgli to the floor, as the bomb came crashing down, causing the window to explode and the other photographs to shatter on the floor.
"Come on, you idiot!" Peter tried to pull Mowgli along. "Run!"
Mowgli managed to grab the broken photo of Jim Dear, and finally allowed Peter to pull him along.
"Get out!" said Peter.
The boys ran back outside for the shelter.
The planes were flying right overhead them.
Darling was anxiously waiting for her sons. "Come on!"
Peter and Mowgli quickly made it to the shelter.
"Hurry!" Darling demanded, as her sons approached her.
Once they were all inside the shelter, Mowgli fell to the floor, completely stricken out.
Peter, on the other hand, was furious. "Why can't you think of anyone else but yourself?" He berated Mowgli. "You're so selfish! You could have got us killed!"
"Stop it!" Darling silenced Peter.
She turned her attention to Mowgli, who began to sob from his near-death experience. He merely glanced at the rescued photo of Jim Dear.
"It's okay," Darling gently assured Mowgli. "Shh." She comforted him with a hug, while Mowgli kept on sobbing.
"Why can't you just do as you're told?" asked Peter.
Mowgli just responded to his brother with a glare.
Rolling his eyes, Peter slammed the shelter door shut.
